Book Description
Like its predecessor, Biogeography, Second Edition, aims to integrate the specialized subdisciplines that threaten to divide the field. It combines ecological and historical perspectives to show how contemporary environments, earth history, and evolutionary processes have shaped the distributions of species and the patterns of biodiversity. It illustrates general patterns and processes using examples from different groups of plants and animals from diverse habitats and geographic regions.
Biogeography, Second Edition, consists of 19 chapters, organized into five sections. The book is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of figures and maps, and contains a glossary and extensive bibliography. Starting from simple facts and principles, and assuming only a rudimentary knowledge of biology, geography, and earth history, the book seeks to explain the relationships between the patterns of plant and animal distributions and the mechanistic processes that have produced them. Throughout, the emphasis is on the interplay between unifying concepts and the evidence that supports or challenges these ideas.

An excellent introductory approach to Biogeography.......2001-06-12
This book written by some of the best authors known in the field comprises a quite extensive overall view of biogeography, its fundaments, beginnings, divisions, schools and relatively new applications and inner relations with other sciences. It contains also a copy of the original zoogeographic regions map created by Wallace. This book resembles the whole biogeography curse taught in the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, UNAM. which is quite exceptional and has the best scientists-profesors in Latin America. If you are looking for a "has it all" biogeography book this one is a must have for undergraduates and graduates students interested in comparative biology, systematics and distributions of taxa within time and space. The review has only four stars for strictly brand new additions of up to date biogeographical information are not included in this edition, yet, but for a three year old book it is a minor problem.

Book Description
Studies of the cells and genes of the nematode C. elegans have become a cornerstone of current biology. A classic 1988 Cold Spring Harbor monograph, The Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, described the basic genetics, anatomy and development of the organism. Now, in that authoritative tradition, comes C. elegans II -- not a second edition but a book that breaks new ground and defines the current status of the field, providing a detailed molecular explanation of how development is regulated and the nervous system specifies varied aspects of behavior. This volume is a must for any investigator doing worm studies but it has been written and rigorously edited to illuminate for a wider community of investigators in cell and molecular biology who should know how new knowledge of C. elegans relates to their own specialty.

for the Biology Scientist who wants to make computer models.......2001-07-18
This book is a must for the Biology scientist knowing a little about computers and how they work, if you want to study the Evolution and nature of life on a computer. I found it so overwhelming that I decided to become a Biology scientist and focus my life on making simulations of the Evolution of Life by making computer models. So many things to discover! So little time!
Computers and evolution.......2000-06-19
I am writing review this because a previous review may mislead some people. This book does not claim to deal with Artificial Life; instead, computers are used to provide a better understanding of life's processes, especially evolution. Given that this is the stated objective of the author, the book is excellent, well written, and rich with examples.
I have purchased multiple copies of this book because I have "loaned" my copies to people interested in computational evolution. When I leave administration, I would like to teach a course in evolution, and if it is not too far in the future, I will require this book as outside reading.

misleading title.......2000-03-02
This book is a superficial discussion of evolution on earth, not artificial life. The actual content on artificial life and agents would make a mediocre and short magazine article. This book brings out the shortcommings of buying a book online because less than five minutes in a bookstore aisle would reveal the uselessness of this book.

Book Description
Why Elephants Have Big Ears is the result of one man's lifelong quest to understand why the creatures of the earth appear and act as they do. In a wry manner and personal tone, Chris Lavers explores and solves some of nature's most challenging evolutionary mysteries, such as why birds are small and plentiful, why rivers and lakes are dominated by the few remaining large reptiles, why most of the large land-dwellers are mammals, and many more.
Customer Reviews:
Why is this called Science?.......2005-03-06
When I bought this book, I thought I might get some real concrete facts in the debate of evolution.I must admit,I was disappointed.
The problem is that Biology is not a Science like Mathematics or Physics where theories are subjected to the Scientific Method and a truth or law is proven;and once done does not change based on the pressure of factions or schools of thought. So, if you accept the stuff in this book as science;let me quote Lavers:(page 56)
"McNab's theory involves a few assumptions, but it is ingenious and at least consistent with the broad pattern of body-size variation known from the fossil record. It has received surprisingly little attention from scientists, however, partly because it is rather complicated but mostly because one year later,in 1979,a radical different theory was proposed that caught the imagination of most researchers in the field and seemed to offer a more general explanation for the evolution of warm-bloodedness in both mammals and birds."Since when is science based on how much attention ,how complicated or how much imagination a theory catches?
Then again,on page 101:
"The total number of species also declines towards the poles. The reasons for this are complex and not yet fully understood-at least twenty-eight theories have been proposed-but some factors are clear."Take your pick, get a few to go along with you,now you have a school of thought. But don't wait too long, there'll be some more theories shortly.
This is more like Archaeology where things are collected, measued, named, classified, catalogued, and so forth, but if one expects to get the origin resolved;that will depend on the school of thought in vogue at the time.At least they don't try to pass it off as science.

Scholarly, insightful, articulate, engaging, iconoclastic........2000-09-07
Charles Birch is Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney and draws upon his years of research and thought in the philosophy of biology and the relationship of science and religion to provide a seminal rethinking of both science and religion allowing each field to expand its unique contribution to our study and understanding of life in Biology And The Riddle Of Life. Birch argues that while biology has an impressive history of explaining the objective, measurable aspects of life, it has not been able to deal effectively with life's subjective phenomena. What is need to address the issues surrounding a search for meaning in life must include seeking answers to such questions as what it is to be alive, experience pain, to be in love, is God necessary as an explanatory principle for life (and if so, is it a naturalistically understood deity, or an interventionist supernatural deity). Highly recommended reading for students of biology, philosophy, and religious studies, as well as the nonspecialist general reader with an interest in the conjunction of science and religion, Biology And The Riddle Of Life is scholarly, insightful, articulate, engaging, and at times iconoclastic.

Book Description
Empirical research often lacks theory. This book progressively works out a method of constructing models which can bridge the gap between empirical and theoretical research in the social sciences. This might improve the explanatory power of models. The issue is quite novel, and it benefited from a thorough examination of statistical and mathematical models, conceptual models, diagrams and maps, machines, computer simulations, and artificial neural networks. These modelling practices have been approached through different disciplines. The proposed method is partly inspired by reverse engineering. The standard covering law approach is abandoned, and classical induction restored to its rightful place. It helps to solve several difficulties which impact upon the social sciences today, for example how to extend an explanatory model to new phenomena, how to establish laws, and how to guide the choice of a conceptual structure. The book can be used for advanced courses in research methods in the social sciences and in philosophy of science.

Book Description
'You shall see nothing, hear nothing, think of nothing but Svengali, Svengali, Svengali!' First published in 1894, the story of the diva Trilby O'Ferrall and her mesmeric mentor, Svengali, has entered the mythology of the time alongside Dracula and Sherlock Holmes. Immensely popular for a number of years, the novel led to a hit play, a series of popular films, and the trilby hat. The setting of the story reflects the author's bohemian years as an art student in Paris; indeed James McNeill Whistler was to recognize himself in one of the early serialized instalments. George Du Maurier was a celebrated caricaturist for Punch magazine and his drawings for the novel form part of its appeal - this edition includes his most significant illustrations.

Mon ami, an apple is an excellent thing -- until you have tried a peach! Her voice to that of Alboni is as a peach to an apple--I give you my word of honour! but bah! the voice is a detail. It's what she does with it--it's incredible! it gives one cold all down the back! it drives you mad! it makes you weep hot tears by the spoonful! Ah! the tear, mon fy! tenez! I can draw everything but that! Ca n'est pas dans mes cordes! I can only madden with love! But La Svengali! . . . And then, in the middle of it all, prrrout! . . . she makes you laugh! Ah! le beau rire! faire rire avec des larmes plein les yeux--voila qui me passe! .. . Mon ami, when I heard her it made me swear that even I would never try to sing any more.
Customer Reviews:
Sometimes Laughable, but Overall Good.......2007-05-04
There were times when I was laughing at the characters and at the plot of the book. For instance there is plenty of filler and then comes the wait to find out who the great new singer taking Europe by storm is. And then the line. "It was Trilby!" If only they could see themselves. It was so obvious to the reader for pages and pages of filler.
The characters are a bit flat. Little Billee is some type of enamoured artist and Svengali is a demonic master of music, a simple sort of lovably dumb love interest, there's a disapproving worrying mother worried about social rank and you plug them in to the formula and you get a classic novel.
Sometimes I wonder where the art is in a book like this. In this instance it's mostly in the balance of the plot and the timing of suspense and the way the truth all unfolds at the end.
Like I said Svengali and Little Billee are a little one dimensional and at that their images are basically used as a plot device, and for the most part the author just tells you what the characters are like more than showing. So my main complaint is that Svengali wasn't as wicked or as mesmeric as I anticipated, basically he's just cheap and spits on Little Billee. Take it up another level of vagueness (hard to call it abstraction) and you've got a guy with a messed up face, a mask, and a protege calling himself the phantom of the opera.
These are the shortcomings of the book as I see them, but I can see why it's a classic the story/plot is well done, and the filler is well written, and occasionally entertaining, and occasionally you or I sort of laughed and identified with the the character-introspective passages, but I rarely felt for the characters genuinely.
Quaint, but Not Remarkable........2006-04-03
I was assigned this book for a class on Aesthetic and Decadant movements in Victorian British literature, and had never heard of it before then. However, I did enjoy it. It has a sardonic but good-natured tone that is winning, and it's not surprising that Du Maurier was greatly influenced by Thackeray; they share the same subtle sting in their prose.
Unfortunately, contrasting with the entertainment value in the novel, there is little of substance, unless one wishes to dig back into the social mileau of the time, which included many anxieties expressed in this book. It is interesting in this context, but I don't know if I would have done the work on my own without the class to guide me.
So, if you want some light entertainment of the Victorian variety, I definitely recommend this book to you--otherwise, look elsewhere.
Very ahead of it's time........2005-03-19
The story essentially centres on the competition between two men for love of one woman, but ultimately each of them abuses her with their own notoins of ownership. It seems to focus on the nature by which we can kill those we love with strangulating beliefs of ownership and imposing standards of behaviour which kill the spirit of the being we direct them at.
Given that "ownership" was a strong theme in Victorian marriage, this book was being ultimately brave but it seems the audience at the time of it's release, revelled in it's horror form a gothic point of view, a hugely popular novel movement at the time.
It has taken time and changes in attitudes to see the themes beyond the story. This book still has enormous contempary resonance and is a disturbing but important read.
High-spirited 1890's hit.......2003-02-02
Reading "Trilby" is like listening to a lively, friendly raconteur taking you into his confidence. All the characters are interesting and lovable despite their faults. Ultimately, du Maurier even has a soft spot for Svengali. Sentimental, yes...but effervescent and with a broad tolerance for life and human weaknesses. It's a fun, memorable read and easy to see why it was a huge hit of the 1890's.
Read it for the atmosphere.......2002-09-24
The book which put "Svengali" into the English language. I had heard of this book long ago, of course, though i can't remember whether it was first from learning about Svengali or finding out that du Maurier was Daphne du Maurier's father. But i had never read it. In a way i'm glad i didn't, becuase that has given me the opportunity to read it now, for the first time. It has taken me a little longer than i might have expected, but was well worth the time. The story of the tragic Trilby, who cannot sing a note to save her life, and how she is moulded into the singer who takes Europe by storm, by the evil (?)(i'm not sure) musician Svengali, who uses mesmerism of some kind to play her as an instrument. The story is told from the persepective of three Englishmen who lived in Paris during the time Trilby was an artists' model, before she fell under Svengali's spell. The three, Taffy, the Laird, and Little Billee, who was her fiancé at one point, briefly, are artists, of a sort; they love Trilby for herself, and are devastated when she is removed from them by events. Naturally, they are shocked by her reappearance in the world of Culture. But they are delighted at the possibility of renewing her acquaintance.
I could wish that du Maurier had not been so cute with his French as "spoken" by the English. I could wish that there is less French altogether, as it does slow down the reading ~ perhaps one reason "Trilby" isn't read any more (is it?). It does generate an atmosphere, though, and you begin to know what Western Europe was like in the middle years of two centuries ago. This edition, Dover, has over a hundred illustrations by du Maurier, who had made his name as a cartoonist for Punch. They are lovely, and add immeasurably to the book.

Book Description
Arizona in 1910 was a rough and dangerous place, and Trilby dreamed of returning to her family home in Louisiana. But rough, sexy cowboy Thorn Vance had other ideas, and Trilby found herself both alarmed and intrigued by his burning sensuality. Although she tried to deny it, not even the wide expanse of the desert could contain the explosive heat that threatened to consume them both . . .
Customer Reviews:
Too many characters!.......2006-10-03
The story was nice. It had a lot of history in it, so you also get an education on the war of 1910. Thorn is a good, strong character. Betrayed by his wife, its easy to know why he doesnt have a lot of trust in women. Trilby is a very weak character at the beginning but starts to flourish a little in the middle and end. However, there are so many characters in this book that sometimes you forget you are reading about Trilby and Thorn. Theres Naki, Sissy, Ben, Richard, Julie, Lisa, Selina, Powell, Jack, etc. the list goes on. Overall a good love story, i liked it, but i would have liked it even better if Diana would have stuck with the war education and Trilby/Thorn instead of looking like a 5 in 1 book.
Review of the right book!.......2005-05-09
This book should not be penalized because the first reviewer didn't get the right story! "Trilby" is a terrific story, with a strong heroine, engaging secondary characters and fascinating history. I devoured it in a weekend because I wanted to know if everyone got their happy endings, and I was not disappointed. Palmer is an amazing talent, able to write contempory romance *and* historicals with the same spice and drama. This one is a keeper for sure.
Love found in Arizona.......2003-04-07
Trilby Lang and her family has moved from Louisiana to Arizona to live at Blackwater Springs Rach that her father has inherited. Trilby longs to return to Louisiana and her "beau" Richard until she is pulled into the arms of Thorn Vance.
Thorn's ranch has no water and he is losing some cattle due to the drought. He plans to seduce and marry Trilby to earn rights to her ranch's abundant water supply.Thorn is a hard man that does not trust the female race due to the treatment from his late wife, Sally. He vows to not "fall" again. Can Trilby win him over and make him believe her love is lasting and true? I believe she can!
Although this is not may favorite book that she has written, I still enjoyed it and I would also recommend reading it.
problem with review.......2001-06-26
Hi: I have never read Trilby but I have read Amelia by Diana Palmer. And unless she wrote two books with exactly the same plot, I think the reviewer (from juno.com) is talking about the wrong book. Amelia is the story of a man (King) who seduced the girl so she wouldn't marry his brother. But she was beaten half to death by her father and the hero felt guilty enough the marry the girl himself.
Beware!.......2001-05-28
This book was good it had a lot of action and a well written subplot involving Trilby's brother and his search for a villain. Reading this book was pretty hard it had some disturbing moments. I found that Thorn was an absolutely disgusting, vile and viscous character. Why Tribly wanted him is something I'm still trying to figure out. Thorn systematically set out to seduce Tribly so that he could "save" his brother from a woman who has no backbone. He schemed to have sex with Trilby and once he was successful he immediately went to her father and told him what a whore his daughter was. Of course, you can guess that Tribly was viciously beaten by her father until he had a heart attack and died. By this time, Trilby is unconcious and had made no effort to defend herself when she found out that Thorn, the worm, had sold her out. Trilby is found by Thorn and his family and they set about nursing her back to health. Thorn has a guilty conscience for about two minutes and then vows that when she is well he can just seduce her again. Trilby recovers and shows that she really does have backbone and immediately proves this false by letting Thorn worm his way back in again. I found this hard to understand especially when Trilby was beaten so severely that she would heal with very bad scars on her back. How you can think to spend the rest of your life with someone who was responsible for you enduring such torture is something I find hard to believe. Anyway, I enjoyed the book only for the subplot and the full attention it was given. It was a story that could have stood on it's own, but was what saved Trilby from being the pits.

One of the Best Books EVER for Young Girls.......2004-05-23
I read this book years ago first, and it always stayed with me. It's wonderful. I STILL love it and now I'm in my thirties. It will make you very happy at times and it will make you cry buckets of tears too...and it's worth the tears. Most of the time, I can't abide things, books or movies, that make me cry...I hate sentimental nonsense that's obviously engineered to tug at my heartstrings. However, this book feels so authentic, even this old cynic can't help but love it still. I hope you will too.
Unforgettable.......2001-08-14
I read this book years ago, and lent it to a friend. I never got the book back, but I never forgot it. To this day I remember the characters and the impact they had on me. I have found the book again, and enjoyed it just as much now as I did years ago.
The Diary of Trilby Frost is a wonderful coming of age novel.......1998-11-19
I read this book in seventh grade and loved it! Trilby is a wonderfully endearing character. This coming of age book follows her relationship with Sol (a cherokee half-breed) and her family. It is beautifully written and the passage at Sol's grave haunts me still today.

A Father of European Dream Literature.......2001-08-15
Nodier, entymologist, etymologist, folklorist, political survivor (through the French Revolution,Napoleonic Empire ,Restoration, and July Monarchy) storyteller, and Romantic, was an early author to immerse his writing in the concerns of dream life and desire, and, more incredibly, to reflect the structure and deep meaning of dreams into the structure and form of his own writing. SMARRA, especially, is an incredible and profound work of layered narrative and symbolic evocation. It is also a spooky and entertaining nightmare of a vampire story. TRILBY,the magical story of a Scottish Highland sprite, is not far behind.
Nodier is a crucial influence for Nerval, Gautier, and their later heirs in the Symbolist and Surrealist movements. As a minor Napoleonic bureaucrat in the Balkans, Nodier encouraged the collection of Slav and Serbo-Croat folklore and helped to promote the conception of a national literature in this area. Using these Balkan tales, Nodier was an early importer of the vampire legend into West European literature and consciousness.

This is an incredibly important and wonderful "lost" author. NOdier, entymologist, etymologist, folklorist, political survivor (lived through the Revolution, Napoleon, Restoration, & July Monarchy), storyteller, and Romantic, is one of the first European authors to immerse his writing in the concerns of dream life and desire, and, more incredibly, to reflect the structure and deep meaning of dreams in the structure and form of his own writing. SMARRA, especially, is an inecridible and profound work of layered narrative and symbolic evocation. It is also a spooky and entertaining nightmare of a vampire story. TRILBY, a magical story of a Scottish Highland sprite, is not far behind.

As a minor Napoleonic bureaucrat in the Balkans, Nodier was influential in the collection of Slavic and Serbo-Croat folklore and helped to foster their conception of a national literature. It's from these Balkan legends that Nodier was able to become an early importer of the vampire legend into Western European literature and consciousness.
