A very good book to start with. Very Mathematical in its approach. Not much of implementation. But will help you do your own implementation. For people who what to learn the basics and try implementing themselves. Not for people who want ready made soup.

What the book IS.......2006-09-15

To say that the Argentina of the Martin Fierro is "not very different as what it its today with unjustice and segregation" is a little bit short sighted. Things are completely different today. It is true that segregation might exist from a economical point of view, but no one sees gauchos as an inferior people nowadays.

Martin Fierro is an account of an era long time gone, but that it existed, an the book is interesting as a somewhat reliable historical account. If we want to see Hernandez as a sort of George Orwell, we are reading too much into it.

What Martin Fierro means today.......2001-11-02

Martin Fierro was written by Jose Hernandez in an era of gauchos and caudillos, not very different as what it its today with unjustice and segregation. Gives a plain message of values, courage and validates the ability of the people to survive under the worst conditions and succeed. A very actual approach at very current problems. The advise he gives to his kids could be the same we today give to our kids "sibbling be united , ..."
Agreat book, with a wonderfull content, some historic points of view and a nice look to lthe 1800 argentinean society from a gaucho's side .

A masterpiece in many different languages.......2000-05-12

Martin Fierro is a work of art. While describing in poetry the life of Martin Fierro (a Gaucho in the Pampas in the mid to late 1800's), this poem was also a political complaint and a message of unification against the modern world for the gauchos. Herandez's greatest achievement was to unite, in one poem, a message for all the social and cultural classes. Hernandez was a self made man, ruled by simple principles based on honesty and dignity. These principles are well reflected in his book. When Martin Fierro meets his sons, and counsels them, it is Hernandez speaking to all of us.

Martín Fierro is Argentina's image.......1998-09-06

Martín Fierro is, in some way, a national hero for Argentinian people, even for those who haven't read the book. And it seems pretty difficult to analyse this poem knowing that, because Fierro is basically a dirty, filthy, lazy and bane gaucho. Anyway, being Fierro for Argentinian people as Cid for Spanish or Achilles for Greek, the reader should know that this book defends a savage way of life with reasonable ideas, and that is what makes it unique. Martín Fierro belongs to a special time in Argentinian history, and because of this fact the reader should take over this book in a special way and try to understand it by entering the soul of the typical gaucho poetry. This book, written 120 years ago is still very very recommendable in this age of Grishams and Sheldons.

EXCELLENT BOOK.......1997-08-13

This is a great book which describes the situation of the gauchos in ARGENTINA (of course, long ago). I recomend the readers to check the wise tips given by "el viejo vizcacha", in one of the chapters. (They are great (and real)).

The quality of the book impressed me. I bought it for my 70 year old dad, and the print was perfect. The hard cover edition cost about $10 (including standard shipping), and made a wonderful, high-quality, durable, inexpensive, surprize gift. My father thoroughly enjoys this poetic tale, and carries his copy at all times.

I bought this edition of the unforgettable classic by José Hernandez (meaning, the one by iUniverse, ISBN 1-58348-811-1) misled by the review below that recommends it as including both, the Spanish original and the English translation, and as being extensively annotated. That review must refer to a different edition, for this one only includes the Spanish text (both parts, Martín Fierro and La Vuelta de Martín Fierro) and is NOT annotated.

Listen, if yer at all like me, you've been looking for a BILINGUAL and reliable edition of this great work for some time. Well, I finally took a chance and got this one (SUNY Press, ISBN: 0873950267 ; ISBN-13: 9780873950268), AFTER buying the paperback also put out by State University of New York Press. First of all, this is a totally different translation (and I don't mean to say it's better or worse than the other one, just that they're not the same), it's not just the translation (it's a bilingual edition, with left pages in the original spanish, right pages in english), it's fully annotated (sometimes with the exact same explanations for certain words/passages for the english or the spanish reader, sometimes with particular explanations for just one versus the other, which leads me to believe the editors really gave some thought in their preparation of this volume), it's a beautiful, simple hardcover, it's illustrated (with extremely simple -- could be thought of as bad -- black and white reproductions of the classic Antonio Berni paintings), and it's COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED (which is to say it has BOTH Martin Fierro and the Return of Martin Fierro, which is very difficult to find let alone imagine someone being so kind enough to do). SO STOP BEING WISHY-WASHY ABOUT IT. THIS IS THE EDITION TO OWN. IT'S EXCEEDINGLY {inexpensive} FOR WHAT IT IS. IT'S BEAUTIFUL. REALLY. p.s. the lack of a description is what threw me off it for a while, too. that's why i'm including all of this here. enjoy.

If you want to understand the life-style of the gauchos in Argentina by the begining of the century then this book is for you. Unfortunatly unless you read it in spanish you might lose 80% of it's value, since it is written in the gaucho's jargon.

Este libro esta muy bien escrito; Disfrute mucho de el. Es un libro que se puede leer mas de una vez y sentirse como que se esta leyendo por vez primera pero al leerlo por segunda o tercera vez ect. ect.. se lee con un nuevo espiritu de exhilaracion acerca de las aventuras globales que describe. El libro esta escrito en forma de poesia/ prosa acerca de estas experiencias globales que relatan sobre experiencias de la vida cotidiana. Si alguien esta pensando en viajar, recomendaria altamente este libro y diria que debe ser puesto en la lista de libros de viajes recomendados. This book is very well written; I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a book that can be read over and over again and still feel that I am reading it for the first time but with a renewed spirit of exhilaration about the worldly exploits that it depicts. It is an account told in poetry format of travel adventures as they relate to life experiences during these travels. I would further say that if someone is thinking of traveling, this book should be put on the list of recommended travel books. Fascinante relato de un joven en su viaje por el mundo en una epoca de vias precarias; con carencia de dinero; impulsado por su espiritu aventurero, con afan de conocer, experimentar y aprender de otros pueblos y culturas. Con una narracion amena, y con las experiencias vividas, deja ensenanzas y consejos y a su vez, capta la atencion del lector mas exijente. Quiero resaltar, la forma positiva de referirse a cada pais, aun de aquellos en donde tuvo dificultades. Este libro ensena que nada es imposible cuando se persevera en su busqueda.
