Artificial Liver Support (Falk Symposium)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1402032390 |
Book Description
For more than 25 years clinicians and scientists have been trying to improve the treatment of acute hepatic failure. Several devices were developed and hemodialysis procedures were refined. The treatment of fulminant hepatic failure and end-stage liver cirrhosis by liver transplantation became a standard procedure. However, for the successful management of critical situations before and after liver surgery, artificial liver support is still needed. This book is the proceedings of the Falk Symposium No. 145 on ‘Artificial Liver Support’, held on 27--28 January 2005 in Ulm, Germany, and provides an overview of the possibilities and limitations of the existing procedures and devices available for artificial liver support. The results achieved with albumin dialysis (MARS System), the Prometheus System, and dialysis and hemofiltration or plasma exchange as well as modular extracorporeal liver support (MELS) and the Amsterdam bioartificial liver are discussed in detail regarding their effects in different clinical situations. In the second half of the book, the remaining problems and expectations for the future of clinical hepatocyte transplantation and stem cell therapy are elucidated. Leading experts in the fields of artificial devices, bioartificial devices, hepatocyte transplantation and stem cells present the latest data on these topics. Their experience and their data are summarized in this volume, thus providing an exceptional overview of the problems and future perspectives in the field of artificial liver support.

Support of the Acutely Failing Liver (Medical Intelligence Unit)
A. A. Demetriou Manufacturer: R G Landes Co ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1879702371 |
Book Description
Severe liver dysfunction results in massive physiologic derangement and high mortality. A concerted multidisciplinary effort is needed to support patients with severe acute liver failure (SALF) and treat them appropriately. This requires mobilization of significant resources. There is a need to put in place clinical teams to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic plants and to critically assess emerging technologic advances. In addition to clinical expertise, there is a need for an appropriate scholarly, scientific environment that can allow meaningful experimental studies to be carried out to advance knowledge in the field. Five years go, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Liver Support Unit (SU) was established to meet these needs. In this book, members of the LSU present the most current understanding of the pathophysiology of liver failure and how its various forms and manifestations are classified, and summarize the state of the art in the diagnosis and management of the disease.

Book Description
This is a survey of recent work in signal processing. Some of the papers report progress which has been made in established areas of research such as adaptive filtering and spectral analysis. Other papers relate to emerging topics of interest such as wavelet analysis, fractal approximation, and nonlinear filtering. Particular effort was made to include papers which consider the development of mathemtical techniques for various signal processing applications ranging from radar and communication systems to astronomy, seismology, and medical imagery. The keynote paper entitled "Adaptive Algorithms for Blind Channel Equalisation" by Professor J. G. Proakis encompasses all of these characteristics and thus sets the tone for the rest of the volume whilst reporting some highly significant research.

Numerical Linear Algebra, Digital Signal Processing and Parallel Algorithms (Nato a S I Series Series III, Computer and Systems Sciences)
Gene H. Golub Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387523006 |
Book Description
Numerical linear algebra, digital signal processing, and parallel algorithms are three disciplines with a great deal of activity in the last few years. The interaction between them has been growing to a level that merits an Advanced Study Institute dedicated to the three areas together. This volume gives an account of the main results in this interdisciplinary field. The following topics emerged as major themes of the meeting: - Singular value and eigenvalue decompositions, including applications, - Toeplitz matrices, including special algorithms and architectures, - Recursive least squares in linear algebra, digital signal processing and control, - Updating and downdating techniques in linear algebra and signal processing, - Stability and sensitivity analysis of special recursive least squares problems, - Special architectures for linear algebra and signal processing. This book contains tutorials on these topics given by leading scientists in each of the three areas. A consider- able number of new research results are presented in contributed papers. The tutorials and papers will be of value to anyone interested in the three disciplines.

Book Description
These two brilliant novels are deservedly among Lawrence's most popular works. Both are at the same time exciting narratives and striking expressions of Lawrence's philosophy. St. Mawr is the story of a splendid stallion in whose vitality the heroine finds the quality that is lacking in the men she knows. It is also the first of Lawrence's writing to be partially set in America, on a ranch in Arizona. The Man Who Died, originally published in Paris as "The Escaped Cock" and later retitled and revised, has as its main character Christ, who does not die on the cross but escapes to wander through the country seeking the meaning of human existence, which he finally discovers in a temple of Isis by the waters of Lebanon.Customer Reviews:
The Horse.......2003-04-02
D.H. Lawrence creates a world with very few words. These characters, though at times stereotypes or archetypes, are extremely real.
This book changed the way I look at the world, deepened my understanding of myself and of those around me.
If I could, I'd split the stars, 3 and 5..........2001-08-14
"St. Mawr" is the longer, and less interesting, of the two. While Lawrence uses his usual dramatic (and excellent) flair for describing landscapes and their reflections in personality of those looking outward at them, there's a lack of direction to this story. Even more than usual, Lawrence seems to suffer from a lack of cohesion with this story, but there's a worthy read in it anyway, for his character studies are, as always, sharp enough to draw blood. Put literally, "St. Mawr" is about two women, a mother and daughter, who upon finding a fine stallion with a wildness to it, realize that that wild natural je-ne-sais-pas is missing from all the men in their lives, leading them on an interesting - if continuity flawed - pilgrimmage.
"The Man Who Died," would get 5 stars from me on its own. This is an incredibly well written story of an alternate telling of the 3 days that Christ was dead. This is Christ as a human being, not a sacred figure, and as such, I can see why this story caused such a harsh discourse. Struggling to find meaning and reason for his tortures, Christ embarks on a three day journey after waking from the dead on the very same day he was entombed. I refuse to ruin any of the plot for you, but this retelling is magnificent, and a really in depth study of sorrow and suffering, and rebirth. You owe yourself a read of this, even if you skip "St. Mawr."

The Man who was Banned . . ........2000-03-27
'St. Mawr' is a very entrancing short story about a woman and her dissatisfaction with men as a whole. The heroine, a countrified gentile, has a wild imagination in this, and Lawrence describes her thoughts in terms of the horse's power and motion and ability. I got so caught up in this that I finished it in just over an hour. It's a very well structured read.
'The Man Who Died' has become my favourite contemporary version of the last days of Christ. It's an amazing and original story that leaves you asking questions. Many heavy handed Christians became infuriated by this story when it was published, and i'm sure many will continue to rail against it for the humanizing of thier idol.
At first glance, I wasn't aware that they were both seperate stories but, after reading 'The Man Who Died', I kept asking myself - Why are these two stories together like this? The only conclusion I could draw was, the fallibility of one and the infallibility of the other. Be advised though, D.H. does his best to derail your thinking here.
