Book Description

At the time of European discovery, the ancient North American forests stretched across nearly half the continent. And while today little remains of this past glory, efforts are underway to bring back some of the diverse ecosystems of that era. America's Ancient Forests: From the Ice Age to the Age of Discovery provides scientists and professionals with essential information for forest restoration and conservation projects, while presenting a compelling and far-reaching account of how the North American landscape has evolved over the past 18,000 years.

The book weaves historical accounts and scientific knowledge into a dynamic narrative about the ancient forests and the events that shaped them. Divided into two major parts, it covers first the glaciers and forests of the Ice Age and the influences of native peoples, and then provides an in-depth look at these majestic forests through the eyes of the first European explorers. Changes in climate and elevation, the movement of trees northward, the assembly of modern forests, and qualities that all ancient forests shared are also thoroughly examined.

A special feature of this book is its self-contained introduction to the early history of Native American peoples and their environment. The author draws on his roots in the Osage nation as well as painstaking research through the historical record, offering a complete discussion of how the cultural practices of hunting, agriculture, and fire helped form the ancient forests.

1 out of 5 stars Forest industry perspective.......2006-09-14

Potential readers of this book should be aware that the author is a forest industry proponent who argues a strongly industry perspective on forest management that is contradicted by the vast majority of scientific research. He has served on the Scientific Advisory Board of National Center for Public Policy Research, a free market think tank that has argued, "There is no serious evidence that man-made global warming is taking place", and "There are many indications that carbon dioxide does not play a significant role in global warming." The book presents an unique view on forest management, but one that is shared by few others.

I found this book to be very well researched and written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the natural history of our great nation.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Thomas Bonnicksen's America's Ancient Forests.......2001-01-20

This book could have been titled America's Ancient Landscapes. One of the pleasant surprises about this book is that it deals with all types of landscapes: prairies, barrens, savannas, and all types of wetlands, as well as forests. For those of us in the Midwest, who deal with all of those types, this is a great bonus. Bonnicksen gives us the needed background, through the tremendous changes of the ice age and the plant migrations that followed, to the landscape affects of the Native Americans, to be able to knowledgeably manage natural areas, and restorations. The background on the Indians is so very thorough. You can't help but acquire a new impression of how important and ubiquitous their influence was. What I really like about this book is the complete documentation, done in the old fashioned way, with footnotes! The chapter on fire had 317 footnotes, all of which can be looked up in first the Notes and Citations, then in the extensive Bibliography, which alone covers 75 pages! This is a great reference work. If you can't afford it, get your local library to purchase a copy. I did!

5 out of 5 stars Thomas M. Bonnicksen Brilliant Paen to our Ancient Forests.......2000-09-27

Professor Bonnicksen has devoted his career to the care and protection of the forests. Where public relations folks talk the talk, Professor Bonnicksen walks the walk. Ancient Forests is a tour through history, a tour de forest that takes us from ancient lands and brings us to the present day, making us realize that from the forest we came and from the forests we shall go. A member of the Congressional Commission charged with oversight of American forest and land use and a devoted conservationist, Professor Bonnicksen in this brilliant volume brings many of his themes expounded in shorter articles and books together in a densely forested wood of pine and deciduous scented brilliance. After reading this book, no one will pass a tree and look at it the same, ever, again. Kudos to Professor Bonnicksen of Texas A & M University.

    Book Description

Life in Ancient Ice presents an unparalleled overview of current research into microbial life in ancient glacial ice and permafrost. Particulates of fungi, bacteria, pollen grains, protists, and viruses are carried by wind around the globe. When they fall to Earth in polar regions they may be trapped in ice for hundreds of millennia. Some of the many implications sound like science fiction--for example, might melting glaciers release ancient pathogens that yield modern-day pandemics? But rigorous, coordinated research is nascent. This book points the way forward. Based on a National Science Foundation-sponsored symposium organized by the editors in 2001, it comprises twenty chapters by internationally renowned scientists, including Russian experts whose decades of work has been rarely available in English.

The book begins by setting forth many protocols that have been used to study microorganisms trapped in ice, discussing their potential sources and presenting evidence for microbial metabolic activity at temperatures below freezing. This is followed by nine chapters describing the fungi, bacteria, and viruses that have been found in permafrost and glacial ice. Later chapters include a look at Antarctica's subglacial Lake Vostok, at a robot that can be lowered into ice to detect microbes, and at the use of icy environments on Earth as model systems for studying similar environments on planets and moons. The editors conclude by reviewing key discoveries and outlining important areas for future research.

    Book Description

Its trumpeting cries blasted into the cold Siberian air. But its mighty struggles only pulled it deeper into the soft mud. . . .

Could this have been the fate of the young woolly mammoth discovered more than 20,000 years after it died? As scientists carefully thaw this giant intact prehistoric mammal, they hope to learn more about how the species lived and why it–the largest mammal to ever live–became extinct. But most important, this animal’s well-preserved body may help answer an incredible question–can the mammoth be cloned and one day walk the earth again?

Breathtaking, accurate illustrations; full-color photographs; fascinating maps; and informative diagrams bring the story of the amazing mammoth to life in this large-size hardcover.

        Product Description

Anyone with an open mind that wants to learn how physical things can come from a state of nothingness must read this book. In nothingness, similar to man's imagination, absolute truth must first exist or that nothingness will remain. There are Seven Absolute Essential Truths that must first exist in that state of nothingness before any beginning of a physical reality can take place.

Those Seven are exclusively and clearly explained for the reader to gain better understanding how God created all things with the ability and power to do so and give life.

This is a distinctive book containing scientific truths with Biblical descriptions, verse by verse, of how God created the heavens, earth and Mankind - from Adam and Eve being created triune spiritual beings (image of their Creator) living in a physical body, to the New Heaven and Earth.

Many unique insights revealed exclusively in this book will strengthen the faith of the reader or lead to a belief in Christ. It's well laid out in an easy-to-read-and-understand format of how the eternal living Creator, who engulfs absolute truth, created and made all things 'By His Word'.

It explains the importance of absolute truth when creating or making any thing of substance and purpose in a physical reality; either by God or Man it must begin with truth or it cannot be made; like the 24 hour first day in Genesis there is a detailed description of it, also how and when the 7-day-week originated, along with the significance of that time element.

Some exclusive insights to God's mysteries are: Adam's age the day he was created; how long Adam and Eve lived before falling to sin and the day it occurred; a unique relationship of Eve and Noah's Ark with Christ's crucifixion in Passover (Easter) week.

I home school and used this book to get ready for middle school math. It is pretty easy to understand the explanations. It also has many practice problems of all kinds. I recommend this book to any one who wants to learn math.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book of mathematics.......2003-04-15

I use this book in school for my G/T classes. I am saying four stars because it includes loads and loads of examples, and real life problems which is a highly helpful. The only promblem was it only attempted to explain some of the topics thouroughly. In short, it is an excellentt review of 7th grade math no matter what age level you are, and also an excellent study tool if you only understand it partially.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent GT Math Book!.......2002-10-09

This book uses pratical applications and is mainly for middle school. I currently use it in 5th grade GT Math. I have used the course 1 book last year in GT. This book focuses on everything you are going to need to know for a couple years if in 5th grade. The book uses examples to explain. It also uses about 2 or 3 paragraphs of in depth writing explaining the chapter. Following that, it would guide you through the step by step process. This series is great for teachers and students alike. I could reccomend Mc-Graw Hill to anyone, especially this specific book even if you are falling behind and have to catch up. Overall for learning, chose Mc-Graw Hill.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

The Tolkien Bestiary is a work that has a lot of illustration, and it is done in a highly detailed fine style. You get examples of all the monsters and races and other stuff from Tolkien's world, even some plants are included. Some pretty impressive artwork in this guide, so it is well worth a look for Tolkien fans.

                                5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-03-29

I bought this book for my son because the school told him that he could not keep checking it out over and over. He earned it as a reward for bringing his grades up. He worked hard to get it, so I call that high praise indeed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Tolkien resources out there........2007-02-16

The illustrations in this book are simply the best, this is my third copy, as i have given the first two to friends. A great book for anyone who loves Tolkien.

2 out of 5 stars not worth your while.......2005-06-13

There are many great reference books out there to guide fans both old and new through the intricacies of Tolkien's Middle-Earth. This is not one of them. While this book does contain a good deal of accurate information, much of the rest is either David Day's own invention or just plain wrong. The composite map at the beginning of the book scarcely even makes sense when compared to those drawn by Tolkien himself. The book is an interesting conversation starter, but it is not faithful to The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. It gains a second star primarily because of the beauty of some of the illustrations it contains. For a true encyclopedia of Arda, search elsewhere. There are any number of other books, as well as on-line resources, that are much better researched.

4 out of 5 stars THE MONSTERS OF MIDDLE-EARTH.......2004-05-09

"A bestiary is a book about beasts," writes author David Day in the introduction to his own splendid addition to that unique literary genre, a class of books that has come down to us from the medieval imagination and refuses to be extinguished by modern science altogether. And Day's book is indeed about the beasts and alien life of Tolkien's wonderful world (fire-drakes, dwarves, giant spiders, elves, eagles, orcs, trolls, ents, half-orcs, and of course Hobbits, to name but a few), but it is so much more as well. Intermingled with all the articles and descriptions about Middle-earth's various monsters, animals and even races are valuable nuggests of information and history tied in to virtually every facet of Tolkien's beloved dreamworld, plus a quality map of Middle-earth and a pair of timelines helpful for sorting out some of the historical background at a glance. Turning through this book's beautiful pages is not only an opportunity to savor monsters of myth and magic, but a chance to see how the various elements of a great writer's imagination all fit together to create one of the most enduring literary landscapes of all time. Be that as it may, it is still a book that fulfills its face purpose masterfully. The alphabetized catalogue of Middle-earth's legendary denizes is written in a clear, rather academic but eminently friendly and engaging style that makes reading its contents an easy, almost compulsory task. The illustrations, both color and monocrhome, are eye-catching, classy, and distinctive. Perhaps too distinctive for some tastes; attractive as the pictures are individually and as a whole, they are highly stylized and often quite unrealistic. Those who are accustomed to more true-to-life pictures may not be satisfied with much of this book's otherwise outstanding artwork. Overall, however, the book is both visually appealing and intellectually stimulating, and one that most any Tolkien devotee or fantasy afficianado should enjoy through many repeated perusals. Definitely recommended.

I found this book very informative of Tolkien's world, from first to last, The First Age forward, I got this paperback and it is well made and the black and white drawings are descriptive. Like I said a plus for your Tolkien library.

                                    5 out of 5 stars COMPLETE!.......2004-03-09

This book is a must for Tolkien fans because of its utter comprehensiveness! Anything you need to know is in here and it is very user friendly.

Many people care for the art in Day's books. I don't. But still, the real problems are in the text. Day constantly goes above and beyond what Tolkien writes (when he doesn't simply get it wrong) ceating a world that is as much or more his than Tolkien's. This book is interesting as a faux medeival bestiary but as a guide or analysis of Tolkien's world it is very poor indeed. Robert Foster, J.E. Tyler, Micheal Martinez, Tom Shippey, and the like are simply much more careful scholars. Read their books instead.

5 out of 5 stars A Bestiary for the great saga of Middle Earth...........2003-10-14

In the Dark Ages, bestiaries were volumes (often illustrated) were written as allegorical or moralizing works on the appearance and traits of real or imaginary animals. They were often thick and lavishly illustrated, and their text described in detail such mythical creatures as griffins, gargoyles, giants, and dog-headed men.

David Day's Guide to Tolkien's World: A Bestiary (also published as A Tolkien Bestiary) is a beautifully written and illustrated bestiary, containing entries on the 129 different races that inhabited Middle-Earth. Fauna and flora, ranging from the Athelas (kingsfoil) plant to the awesome Warg are vividly described, and all of Tolkien's major works (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion) are covered. The black and white drawings depict the various races (Elves, Men, Orcs, Istari, Vala, Maia...) and the color plates depict major events from the Creation of the World to the Ringbearers' departure to the West.

A must have for Tolkien fans.
