      Book Description

Trace fossils record the behavior of animals at the very spot where they lived millions of years ago. Their growing interest derives from the intimate connection between ichnology and sedimentology and their combined relevance for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, basin analysis, and petroleum exploration.

This definitive textbook by a renowned field observer and analyst of trace fossils concentrates on the most distinctive examples, mostly made by infaunal invertebrates in originally soft sediments. It covers the whole geologic column and ranges from deep-sea to shallow-marine and continental environments. Seilacher's Trace Fossil Analysis is designed to foster interpretative skills using the author's own iconic drawings. They are thematically grouped in 75 plates that form the core for the descriptive text and annotated references. A glossary of ichnological terms is also provided.

      Book Description

It has been increasingly realized by sedimentologists in the petroleum industry and academia that integration of ichnological information into sedimentological models, and vice versa, is one of the main means by which we can improve our understanding of ancient depositional environments. This volume aims to provide an analytical review of the ichnology of all major depositional environments and the use of ichnology in biostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic analysis, as well as highly refined palaeoenvironmental studies. The remit of the book is achieved through a combination of review articles and novel research papers that outline methodologies and protocols for improving our understanding of ancient palaeoenvironments. Trace fossils from microscopic borings to dinosaur footprints are considered.

The comprehensive coverage of ancient depositional environments means that the book will be of use as a course text for undergraduates as well as an invaluable reference text for all interested in ichnology whether they are ichnologists, sedimentologists or petroleum geologists by trade.

4 out of 5 stars An Up-to-Date Presentation of Trace Fossils.......2006-09-21

Various authors concentrate on different ichnofossils. I will briefly discuss only two of them.

Droser et al. discuss such trace fossils as Rusophycus and Cruziana, both of which are constructed below the sediment-water interface (p. 393). There are different pathways for the construction of these fossils, depending upon such things as the successive removal of seafloor sand and/or mud, followed by redeposition of either or both sediments. One can infer that the sediment must have been firm enough to preserve the leg imprints of trilobites, yet shallow enough to have underwent subsequent seafloor erosion.

McIlroy (p. 6) supports a modified version of the Seilacherian ichnofacies. He allows for there to be a "patchwork", rather than straightforward succession, of these ichnofacies. This "patchwork" pattern is caused by such things as local seafloor variations in sediment firmness, energy level, bathymetry, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Methods for Distinguishing Organic and Inorganic Traces.......2006-09-21

Of all the books on ichnology that I have read, this one is perhaps the most comprehensive in terms of providing usually-unambiguous criteria for distinguishing inorganic traces from biogenic trace fossils.

Pseudofossils are common, and geologists commonly disagree as to the origins of a given structure (p. 29). Some of the criteria pointing to an organic origin are: Uniform dimensions, presence of burrow lining, spreite structure, meniscate fill, organic residue or pellets within, very delicate features, and association with body fossils (p. 30). The authors elaborate on these, and other, criteria, and give examples of each.

                  Book Description

Chemical engineering - as a recognised skill in the workplace, as an academic discipline, and as an acknowledged profession - is scarcely a century old. Yet from a contested existence before the First World War, chemical engineering had become one of the 'big four' engineering professions in Britain, and a major contributor to Western economies, by the end of the twentieth century.
The subject had distinct national trajectories. In Britain - too long seen as shaped by American experiences - the emergence of recognised chemical engineers was the result of professional aspirations and contingency, and shaped by a shifting ecology of institutions, firms and government. Drawing upon extensive archival research, this book examines the evolution of technical practice, working environment and social interactions of chemical engineering. It will be of considerable interest to historians, sociologists of the professions, and to practitioners themselves.

                  4 out of 5 stars ChemEng Wars--Chemical Heritage magazine.......2003-03-13

                  G. N. Lewis, the distinguished physical chemist and leader of the outstanding department at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1912 to World War II, famously rejected chemical engineering as a field of study, advising aspirants to take their degree in chemistry to the engineering school. The success of the discipline in America tends to obscure the reasons for such early resistance. In England, as Divall and Johnston tell us, the scars of the battle are more easily discerned: the efforts of the Institute of Chemical Engineers has continuously, since its foundation, struggled to establish the profession of Chemical Engineering in the face of industrial indifference, hostility from other engineering groups, and sporadic state support. Its war stories form the historical substance of the monograph.
The authors have chosen to cast their story in the mold of the sociology of the professions. Sociological abstractions like legitimation, jurisdiction, and colonization focus attention on those aspects of the Institution's work Thus, George E. Davis is dismissed as a founder of chemical engineering because he had nothing to do with the Institution of Chemical Engineers and had no direct successors who contributed to its professionalization. Despite this, the authors reproduced part of his Handbook of Chemical Engineering in an appendix.
Robert Hinchley, who hitched the fortunes of chemical engineering to the Ministry of Munitions programs in World War I, forged liaisons between government and designers of chemical plants that led eventually to the creation of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). The midwife of its birth was the the Society of Chemical Industry, of which Davis was a founder, that set up a Chemical Engineering Group although very few of those who worked in the chemical industry styled themselves chemical engineers. The Group did not assume the roles of a professional body. It remained for the Institution to define the chemical engineer.
The lack of a petroleum refining industry and a chemical industry tradition that saw chemical engineering as a joint function of chemists and engineers, there were few industrial opportunities for employment. The royal road to recognition passed through the universities that created departments and courses of chemical engineering that established a knowledge base for the new profession. But training could not create jobs. Consequently, the IChemE sought to differentiate those who had jobs in the chemical industries and education or training to distinguish them form ordinary hands, technicians, or mechanical engineers or establishing proficiency by an examination that could elevate to associate membership those who sought to distinguish themselves from less-educated colleagues in the industry.
In order to train engineers, the concept of "unit operations," pioneered at MIT, was included in most of the new curricula of the 1920s, modified to incorporate training in mechanical and civil engineering and exclude the practice schools that were the hallmark of MIT's program. As at MIT, chemical engineering education built on physics, chemistry, and engineering, to focus on the design of equipment and plant , although each university undertaking to teach the discipline cobbled it together somewhat differently. The Institution certified university courses (so that their students could forego the associate examination) but industry paid little attention to either degrees or examinations when hiring personnel, even though many industrialists joined the Institution after its formation. For example, Imperial Chemical Industries continued to use teams of chemists and engineers, leaving the hybrid specialty to firms that could afford but one person for plant design and operation. Only the Second World War, which lifted Chemical engineers into new positions of importance for national defense, redeemed the profession by giving chemical engineers an "occupational identity." The war also created an opportunity for "colonization" of the new fields like nuclear engineering and biochemical engineering.
The Royal Charter granted to IChemE in 1957 after a decade of rapid expansion of raised it to the status of the mechanical, electrical and civil engineering societies but imposed new social responsibilities, codes of ethics, and public accountability. Trade-offs of safety for economy were explicitly made by the Institution until a disastrous explosion forced a reevaluation of the relative priorities of profit and safety. Environmental and civil rights legislation compelled greater attention to pollution and recruitment of women, if not minorities, into the profession. Its hide-bound reaction to these unpleasant realities tarnished the public image of the Institution, and led to a decline in new memberships and new students that continues. Professionalization ironically brought status at the cost of autonomy and responsibility at the cost of accountability, and like a Greek tragedy, the tale of the IChemE told here shows the price of success can be failure

                  Book Description

Although multifractals are rooted in probability, much of the related literature comes from the physics and mathematics arena. Multifractals: Theory and Applications pulls together ideas from both these areas using a language that makes them accessible and useful to statistical scientists. It provides a framework, in particular, for the evaluation of statistical properties of estimates of the Renyi fractal dimensions. The first section provides introductory material and different definitions of a multifractal measure. The author then examines some of the various constructions for describing multifractal measures. Building from the theory of large deviations, he focuses on constructions based on lattice coverings, covering by point-centered spheres, and cascades processes. The final section presents estimators of Renyi dimensions of integer order two and greater and discusses their properties. It also explores various applications of dimension estimation and provides a detailed case study of spatial point patterns of earthquake locations. Estimating fractal dimensions holds particular value in studies of nonlinear dynamical systems, time series, and spatial point patterns. With its careful yet practical blend of multifractals, estimation methods, and case studies, Multifractals: Theory and Applications provides a unique opportunity to explore the estimation methods from a statistical perspective.

Compared to the recently republished papers of Mandelbrot, i had hoped much more from this book. It merely summarizes the existing work on multifractals without providing much insight about why is multifractal theory interesting in practice. If you are interested in a very good mathematical treatment go to the homepage of Rudolf Riedi at Rice University and read his papers. For the original ideas about multifractals and a far more applied perspective go to Mandelbrot's books and also "Critical phenomena in natural sciences" by Sornette, you'll get a more balanced theory-practice mix than in the present book. The only merit of this book is to reference quite fairly the existing literature, but this should not be the sole aim of a book, so i think that with this one you'll waste your time.

                    Book Description

The application of fractals in the engineering sciences is evolving swiftly and the editors have turned to Springer for the third time to bring you the latest research emerging from the rapid growth in techniques available for the employment of the ideas of fractals and complexity to a variety of disciplines in and associated with the engineering field. The strong potential of this research can be seen in real industrial situations with recent progress being made in areas such as chemical engineering, internet traffic, physics and finance. Image processing continues to be a major field of application for fractal analysis and is well-represented here.

It is important to note that the applications models are presented with a firm basis in theoretical argument, the qualitative observation of fractal phenomena no longer being sufficient.

Consisting of papers written by a world-wide pool of experts, the multidisciplinary approach of this third volume will be of particular interest to industrial researchers and practitioners as well as to academics from many backgrounds.

Fractals in Engineering: New Trends in Theory and Applications continues the publication of engineering-related research in fractal techniques begun in Fractals in Engineering and Fractals: Theory and Applications in Engineering (Springer London 1997 and 1999).

                      Book Description

`She had believed that my wild poet's passion for her would make me her slave; and that, being her slave, I should execute her will in all things.' The Lifted Veil was first published in Blackwood's Magazine in 1859. A dark fantasy woven from contemporary scientific interest in the physiology of the brain, mesmerism, phrenology and experiments in revification it is Eliot's anatomy of her own moral philsophy - the ideal of imaginative sympathy or the ability to see into others' minds and emotions. Narrated by an egoccentric, morbid young clairvoyant man whose fascination for Bertha Grant lies partly in her obliquity, the story also explores fiction's ability to offer insight into the self, as well as being a remarkable portrait of a misdeveloped artist whose visionary powers merely blight his life. The Lifted Veil is now one of the most widely read and critically discussed of Eliot's works. Published as a companion piece to The Lifted Veil, Brother Jacob is by contrast Eliot's literary homage to Thackeray, a satirical modern fable that draws telling parallels between eating and reading. Yet both stories reveal Eliot's deep engagement with the question of whether there are 'necessary truths' independent of our perception of them and the boundaries of art and the self. Helen Small's introduction casts new light on works which fully deserve to be read alongside Eliot's novels.

Among the many fatalities attending the bloom of young desire, that of blindly taking to the confectionery line has not, perhaps, been sufficiently considered.

3 out of 5 stars The dark Hyde to Eliot's more familiar, 'warm' Jekyll works........2001-09-22

My previous experience of reading George Eliot (admittedly about a decade ago) had been unhappy - her celebrated humanism seemed like so much fussy interference; 'Silas Marner' was too cosy, and I could not get past the infuriating first chapter of 'Middlemarch'. I've always felt a bit guilty about abandoning 'the greatest English novelist', and this volume of two short tales was a perfect opportunity to see whther my tastes had matured.

'The Lifted Veil' is a dark masterpiece, part-Gothic tale, written in the stilted style of famous horror stories like 'Frankenstein', in which inexplicable horror is described with unnervingly inappropriate articulacy; part-Henry James study of an idle, wealthy man tormented by the unknowability of a woman and her faithfulness (shades of Proust too, who worshipped Eliot).

As Gothic, its influence on cinema has been slight, although the narrator who narrates his own death looks to 'Sunset Boulevard', while a character who can see others' minds was recently enacted in 'What Women Want'. The story begins with one of the best, most shocking openings in English literature, as the hero Latimer, blighted with the gift of 'prevision', gives a detailed account of the way he will die, alone in a crumbling mansion, abandoned by careless servants.

At times, the story reads like a textbook psychological study with a solipsistic hero who lost his beloved mother at a young age, whose father resented him as inadequate, and whose brother's fiancee he loves. The various previsions he has are full of those details Freudian critics enjoy. But those previsions are described in ominous tableaux, and the switch from 'real life' into these states has a genuinely disorienting effect on the reader.

The text has always been seen as valuable as a rare instance of Eliot in effect denying or questioning the humanist principles of her most characteristic work and her interest in progressive science - its narrative is hermetic, anti-humanistic, circular: conflating time to an eternal, hellish present.

'Brother Jacob' is more like the Eliot I remembered, the story of a confectioner's apprentice who steals from his mother to emigrate to Jamaica where he intends to be given his fortune. Although it is a (sour) moral fable, with every character emerging badly, rather than warmly humanistic, the novels' irritations are here - the bossy, intrusive narration; the portrait of a growing, bourgeois community, lifelessly focusing on their obsessions with status and money, where every metaphor is inextricably linked with commerce and consumption. Each character is a caricature: the 'humour' is smug, smart-alecky, sarcastic and sneering. The tale is full of the details English Literature critics enjoy - colonialism, mental defectives, assumed identities etc.

The volume is worth reading for Sally Shuttleworth's exhaustive introduction, which discusses the stories in the context of Eliot's life and work (both are seen as negative allegories for writing and the writer), British Imperialism, laissez-faire economics, gender, the growth of science and progressive philosophy as the new religion etc.

4 out of 5 stars Between Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll.......2000-06-11

A little-read story of George Eliot's "The Lifted Veil" is a lovely example of the intersection between humanities and science in 1859: it ends with a revivification scene worthy of Mary Shelley. Written just before Eliot admitted to being the author of *Adam Bede*, the emasculated protagonist, Latimer, mirrors Eliot herself in his desire for solitude. Exceedingly well-crafted Victorian writing. (I don't know the other story *Brother Jacob* well: it espouses that the wages of sin are embarassment and ostracization.)

Set in 19th-century England, this gripping novel satirizes the pretentiousness and duplicity in relationships. Austen's death did not allow her to complete this entertaining piece and it was later finished by another writer.

                                        Book Description

These Victorian fables by Eliot give simultaneous revelation of egoism and humanity.
