    Book Description

Charles Darwin's health improved substantially in 1866 under a dietary and exercise regime prescribed by his physician Henry Bence Jones. With renewed vigour, he worked steadily on his manuscript of Variation of Plants and Animals under Domestication, submitting all but the final chapter to his publisher in December. He also worked on the fourth, and much revised, edition of Origin which was delivered to printers in July, and preparations were begun for a third German edition of Origin. His improved health allowed him a more active social life. At Down, Darwin entertained a number of scientific colleagues whom he had known previously only through correspondence. He also made his first appearance in London scientific society in many years, touring the Zoological Gardens at Regent's Park, and appearing at a soirée at the Royal Society.

      Book Description

Volume 13 contains letters for 1865, the year Charles Darwin published his long paper on climbing plants and continued work on his book, The Variation of Plants and Animals under Domestication. 1865 was also the year when Robert FitzRoy committed suicide; Joseph Dalton Hooker became director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; and Charles Lyell and John Lubbock quarrelled over an alleged incident of plagiarism. The volume includes a supplement of over 100 letters discovered or redated since the series began publication, including a fascinating collection written when Darwin was 12.

        Book Description

As the sheer volume of his correspondence indicates, 1862 was a very productive year for Darwin. This was not only the case in his published output (two botanical papers and a book on the pollination mechanisms of orchids), but more particularly in the extent and breadth of the botanical experiments he carried out. The promotion of his theory of natural selection also continued: Darwin's own work expanded on it, Thomas Henry Huxley gave lectures about it and Henry Walter Bates invoked it to explain mimicry in butterflies. This volume concentrates on the progress of his scientific work, but also records the effects of Darwin's continuing ill health and the serious illness of two of his children.

          Book Description

During 1867 Darwin intensified lines of research that were to result in two important publications, Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex and Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin circulated a questionnaire on human expression, asking his established contacts to pass it on to their acquaintances, with the result that he began to receive letters from an even more diverse and far-flung network of correspondents than had previously been the case. Convinced that human descent was strongly influenced by sexual selection, he also started to ask his correspondents about sexual differences in animals and birds. At the same time, he was working on the proof-sheets of another major work, Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication, while negotiating almost weekly with French, German, and Russian translators. Book Description

Charles Darwin stands as a towering figure in science, who changed the direction of modern thought in establishing the basis of evolutionary biology. These letters offer a fascinating window onto his daily experience, scientific observations, personal concerns and friendships, affording a unique glimpse of Darwin as both naturalist and family man. From his early years at Edinburgh University up to the publication of The Origin of Species in 1859, the letters in this volume chart the most exciting years of Darwin’s life, including the voyage of the Beagle and the subsequent findings which led to his theory of natural selection. The Cambridge Edition of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin (winner of the first Morton N. Cohen Award for a Distinguished Edition of Letters) has been hailed as a monumental edition and a triumph of post-war publishing. This selected edition, introduced by Stephen Jay Gould, makes these engaging letters newly available.

5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Sampling of Darwin Correspondence.......2007-06-01

In May of 2007, the Darwin Correspondence Project, based at Cambridge University, announced that it had placed an additional 5,000 largely unpublished Darwin letters onto its excellent web site (darwin-online.org.uk). This website is a treasurehouse of the first order for anyone interested in Darwin and Victornian intellectual history. Of course, Cambridge University Press has published a number of volumes in its Darwin correspondence series. However, for a quick dip into Darwin's letters, to get a feel from what is there, this collection covering the period up to the publication in 1859 of "Origin" is a handy introduction. The book has a Foreword by the late Stephen Jay Gould which places the letters into the context of what as going on in Victorian science. The editor, Frederick Burkhardt, has added a helpfujl Introduction and "Editor's Note." The letters are in chronological order, the first being written in 1825 while Darwin was studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Next are letters relating to Cambridge, the offer to make the Beagle voyage, the voyage to South America, and Homeward Bound. So there is plenty of coverage of Darwin's epic trip. But the letters continue after his return up until publication of the Origin. The editor has included some helpful notes, a Biographical Register, Bibliography and Bibliographical Note, and suggestions for further reading (a bit out of date since the book was put together in 1996). All together a very nice and inexpensive package loaded with interesting information and providing the opportunity to come more directly into contact with that most scintilating of minds, that of Darwin.

                Book Description

Charles Darwin's correspondence provides a unique window on Darwin's working methods, the atmosphere of intellectual revolution of his time, and his doubts, anxieties, and false starts that are now little known. This volume is the most comprehensive catalog to date of all presently known letters between Charles Darwin and his friends and associates. The editors of Darwin's Correspondence give information on the source and location of each letter, as well as a brief summary of the content of each. First published in 1985 (by Garland Publishing Company), the Calendar has been thoroughly updated to include recently discovered material, corrected dates, and reinterpretations of known letters. These amendments and additions--1500 in number--are all carefully listed in a new supplement. An essential reference book for all scholars of Darwin, this Calendar will also form a vital companion to The Correspondence of Charles Darwin, a multi-volume work currently in progress, eight volumes of which have already been published by Cambridge University Press.

                      Book Description

This book develops the basic mathematical theory of the finite element method, the most widely used technique for engineering design and analysis. This expanded second edition contains new chapters on additive Schwarz preconditioners and adaptive meshes. New exercises have also been added throughout. The book will be useful to mathematicians as well as engineers and physical scientists. It can be used for a course that provides an introduction to basic functional analysis, approximation theory, and numerical analysis, while building upon and applying basic techniques of real variable theory. Different course paths can be chosen, allowing the book to be used for courses designed for students with different interests.

2 out of 5 stars A book for experienced people only........2006-12-20

This book certainly has a lot of information in it, but it is not lucid at all. This book is a hard read. The presentation is not done very well, and a lot of details get put off to the literature. I would actually recommend the FEM book by Braess instead. Only use this book as a reference.

                      5 out of 5 stars a nice introductory book.......2000-04-06

This book is a very nice introductory book on the subject. It has a very nice presentation of the fundamental issues on finite element theory, such as interpolation theory on Sobolev spaces and variational formulations of elliptic problems. Also, it covers some advanced and more specific subjets such as multigrid methods and mixed methods for fluid mechanics, where it reviews some of the most used techniques to solve the saddle-point problems such as Augmented Lagrangian techniques and penalty methods.

Also, at the end of the book there is a very well written chapter focused on Interpolation operators, where there is a very nice (and very easy to read) presentation of the Sccot-Zhang interpolation operator, and some of the principal results on approximation.

Resuming, it is a very recomendable book in the subjet, specially recomendable for mathematics students interested on finite elements, and researchers in the field.

                        Book Description

Finite Element Solution of Boundary Value Problems: Theory and Computation provides a thorough, balanced introduction to both the theoretical and the computational aspects of the finite element method for solving boundary value problems for partial differential equations. Although significant advances have been made in the finite element method since this book first appeared in 1984, the basics have remained the same, and this classic, well-written text explains these basics and prepares the reader for more advanced study. Useful as both a reference and a textbook, complete with examples and exercises, it remains as relevant today as it was when originally published.
