    Book Description

Predicting how terrestrial ecosystems might respond in the future to large-scale human-generated changes is a major challenge for ecologists. In Terrestrial Ecosystems in Changing Environments, Herman H. Shugart describes the fundamental ecological concepts, theoretical developments, and quantitative analyses involved in understanding the responses of natural systems to change. The key ecological concepts described include the ecosystem paradigm, niche theory, vegetation/climate relationships, landscape ecology and ecological modeling. A variety of ecological models are presented, and their applications in predicting responses to change are considered. The challenge of producing ecological models capable of predicting long-term and large-area ecosystem dynamics is reviewed and several examples are provided. Finally, some of the exciting new findings regarding terrestrial landscapes and their feedback with their climatic setting are discussed in the context of human land use and global change.

      Book Description

This workbook, a companion to The Scriptwriter's Handbook, provides students and scriptwriters with a step-by-step format for adapting the media writing process described in The Scriptwriter's Handbook to a specific informational or training program assignment. It can be used with group or individual study situations, for a range of media applications.

General activities in the workbook help teach specific writing principles; project worksheets provide a guide to help writers develop their own material and work toward a finished shooting script. Many general activities are also suitable as catalysts for classroom discussion, and have been tested by the author in workshops.
Both beginning and skilled writers will benefit from the workbook's thorough step-by-step instruction, hints and exercises for collecting information, analyzing the assignment and audience, conceptualizing and visualizing, drafting and revising. Among the topics covered are: interviewing; and using resource documents; developing audience profiles and content outlines; concept development; television treatments; pacing, style and tone; incorporating feedback; polishing; and client approvals.

                        Book Description

Bridging the gap between modern differential geometry and the mathematical physics of general relativity, this text, in its second edition, includes new and expanded material on topics such as the instability of both geodesic completeness and geodesic incompleteness for general space-times, geodesic connectibility, the generic condition, the sectional curvature function in a neighbourhood of degenerate two-plane, and proof of the Lorentzian Splitting Theorem.;Five or more copies may be ordered by college or university stores at a special student price, available on request.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for an advanced student of relativity.......2005-11-16

My review is based on a previous edition of this text. I have seen the new (2nd) edition and it appears that several chapters have been added but the old chapters are essentially the same.

As of the time of this writing, I have only made it to the 2nd chapter (again, of the 1st edition). Nevertheless, I've read the introductory material in the introductory (1st) chapter several times, because it is so rich.

This text is perhaps most useful to a student who knows a few things about differential, to be more precise, Riemannian geometry (and is interested in general relativity). There are many differences between a Riemannian manifold and a Lorentzian manifold, where the latter metric is not positive definite in that the metric gives one negative eigenvalue. This text is quick to point out the differences, which is a great aid in understanding the new material.

I have some background in general relativity and from my experience in the subject there were many questions I had unanswered. This book is a blessing to me in that it has uncovered for me some of the mystery of Lorentzian manifolds, in particular space-times. There are still many things I do not understand but I am confident this text will aid me in getting a clearer picture.

I highly recommend this text to student of relativity theory who has an understanding of mathematical reasoning, and yearns for a stronger mathematical understanding of the Lorentzian manifold. The current edition is a bit expensive but even if you do not think it is worth it there are still some 1st editions floating around (#67 in the Dekker Pure & Applied Math Series) which are much cheaper. I may eventually buy the 2nd edition if I find the additional chapters make the book worth the price.

In a tale of ancient evil, Bram Stoker creates a world of lurking horrors and bizarre denizens: a demented mesmerist, hellbent on mentally crushing the girl he loves; a gigantic kite raised to rid the land of an unnatural infestation of birds, and which receives strange commands along its string; and all the while, the great white worm slithers below, seeking its next victim...

Bram Stoker, creator of Dracula, is one of the most enduring and masterful influences on the literature of terror.

Adam Salton, born and raised in Australia, is contacted by his granduncle in England, for the purpose of establishing a relationship between these last two members of the family. Adam travels to Richard Salton's house in Mercia, and quickly finds himself in the center of some inexplicable occurrences.

The new heir to the Caswall estate, Edgar Caswall appears to be making some sort of a mesmeric assault on a local girl. And, a local lady, Arabella March, seems to be running a game of her own, perhaps angling to become Mrs. Caswall. There is something strange about Lady March, something inexplicable and evil.

This book has elements that should make it a gripping story. Unfortunately, the tendency of the characters to move on, after a fantastic event, as if nothing unusual had happened gives the story a disjointed, surreal feel. This story just does not come together, but rambles along to its uninspiring conclusion. I do not recommend this book.

A shorter novel. An english uncle calls on an aussie nephew to come and help him out. Strange things are happening, you have a possibly evil hypnotist and the very likely sinister Lady March.

This is all pretty minor compared to the big-arse snake monster or intrepid traveller finds in a cave.

As it turns out, there is not much chance that Lady Arabella March is what she seems.

As you can no doubt tell from the title, this book contains three of Bram Stoker's works. Personally, I do not think these are three of his best.

Without doubt, the collection would not make sense without "Dracula." It is simply the text and has no notes for the reader. The good thing is that it does have plenty of room on the margins for making notes for your use.

In the late eighties and early nineties, it was hard to get a copy of "The Lair of the White Worm." You can know find it in paperback. After reading it, you will see that it is not exactly like the abysmal movie with Hugh Grant.

Although the movie hinted at vampirism, there is no hint of vampirism here which raises the question, "Why include it in a Dracula Omnibus?" This story brings a sentient monster that has been alive beneath England, a voodoo master, and a mesmerist. Not too bad a combination, but it has the feel of two stories fighting each other. Also, we witness the power of Mimi, but never really get to read much about her.

The final selection, "Dracula's Guest," was published posthumously. I don't recall seeing it in paperback by itself, although there is a hardcover edition available. "Dracula's Guest" is typically part of another selection. This is not a novel, but a collection of stories.

Is this a worthwhile investment? If you like Bram Stoker's work, this is a nice hardcover to put up on the shelf. You have "Dracula" and a couple more works to boot. Aside from an introduction from the editor, there are no frills with this edition.
