Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. Description:
A fast HPLC method has been developed for simultaneous determination of rifabutin and its synthesis precursors. The analytes are separated in 1.8min by means of a Kromasil 100 C"1"8 column (50mmx2.1mm i.d., 3.5@mm) at 30^oC. The mobile phase (A: 5mM KH"2PO"4 adjusted to pH 6.5 with KOH; B: acetonitrile) was pumped at a flow rate of 0.4mlmin^-^1 according to the fast gradient mode: 0min, 58% B; 0-0.4min, 95% B. Detection was by ultraviolet absorbance at 275nm. The method was validated in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines and good accuracy, intermediate precision (@?4.6%) and linearity in the range 5-50mgl^-^1 were observed for all compounds. This method is sensitive (limits of detection ranged between 0.1 and 0.3mgl^-^1) and selective to quantify rifabutin and its synthesis precursors and could be used for in-process control.

A Recycled Plot.......2004-10-23

I just got done watching the Pilot for the NBC Series "Medical Investigation" and they used the Medical Investigation that forms the Title Story in this collection. I read the book (and the others in the book's series) back in the 50s or 60s when they were first published and they are still readable and (as shown by the Show recycling the investigation) still interesting.

Recommended for those who want to try their hands at Medical Investigations and Forensics.

Well written, doesn't show its age much.......2004-10-13

The essays are well-written, but of a different style than we are accustomed to expecting in tales of medical detection. The stories usually are told from the viewpoint of the epidemiologists and are centered around a particular outbreak. A history of each disease is discussed, occasionally including past outbreaks, and he throws in some literary quotations to boot. There are less discussions of ethics and the doctor's emotions than the current genre.

Two of the essays are not centered around a particular outbreak. One is a meditation on gout, and the other is about a visit to an antibiotics lab and factory. Also, a couple of the outbreak stories include how public health officials responded to the outbreaks in order to protect the public. Of especial interest is the tale of the mass immunization of New York City.

The timeframe of the book (late 1940's) shows occasionally: the author anticipates an antibiotic being found to cure every woe. Overall, it's aged quite well, and is still an interesting read.
