Book Description
Improved food security, led by increased productivity among Africa's many small-scale farmers, has been the aim of significant national and international effort in recent decades. It has proved to be one of the most critical challenges facing humankind. This book grew out of a two-year exploration conducted by the food security theme of The Rockefeller Foundation focusing on the potential for crop genetic improvement to contribute to food security among rural populations in Africa. It provides a critical assessment of the ways in which recent breakthroughs in biotechnology, participatory plant breeding, and seed systems can be broadly employed in developing and delivering more productive crop varieties in Africa's diverse agricultural environments. It also presents an analysis of current plant breeding and biotechnology strategies for the key crops in Africa including: maize, sorghum, cowpea, rice, and cassava. The book will appeal to plant breeders, biotechnologists, and seed distributors as well as policy-makers in the area of agricultural development.

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
ASIN: 1897766890 |
Book Description
This work powerfully asserts the idea that rather than using pesticides, the key to helping crops resist attacks from pests is to improve their strength through natural processes. Many of industrial agriculture's fundamental principles for fighting disease, in particular the reliance on pesticides and fertilizers, are explained and convincingly challenged and a new set of guiding principles for an ecological agricultural system are presented as a genuine alternative to the widespread use of chemicals.

Clears up a lot of misunderstandings.......2007-07-15
Good book for understanding how agriculture really works. You can get the gist of it in a few overview pages or delve deeply.
Book Description
Successful release of new and better crop varieties increasingly requires genomics and molecular biology. This volume presents basic information on plant molecular marker techniques from marker location up to gene cloning. The text includes a description of technical approaches in genome analysis such as comparison of marker systems, positional cloning, and array techniques in 19 crop plants. A special section focuses on converting this knowledge into general and specific breeding strategies, particularly in relation to biotic stress. Theory and practice of marker assisted selection for QTL, gene pyramiding and the future of MAS are summarized and discussed for maize, wheat, and soybean. Furthermore, approaches in silviculture on the examples of
Fagus, Populus, Eucalyptus, Picea and
Abies are presented. The volume ends with a comprehensive review of the patents relevant for using molecular markers and marker assisted selection.

Book Description
Yield improvement is one goal of virtually every crop breeding program. Many programs concentrate on identifying the genetic traits responsible for higher yield and selecting each of them in the later stages of the breeding cycle. However, selection for yield directly is still the most effective method, since yield is determined by a combination of traits and environmental factors. This book presents a whole-system, or holistic model for the improvement of adaptation, maturity, and yield. Central to its thesis is a recognition that competition between several components of the plant system determines yield and other cultivar characteristics. The book examines this competition and uses the results to provide insights into plant systems in general. It then shows how to enhance the success of breeding trials by balancing different yield components while taking into account prevailing field conditions. Based principally on 25 years research by the authors, the ideas presented in this book are invaluable reading for crop physiologists and plant breeders.

A fundmental book for plant reproductive biology.......2000-09-18
This book offers a complete and a fundamental overview of plant breeding systems by using shallow and clear language that it is easy to understand and follow. I would say it is an essential textbook for students who have biological, genetic, and evolution backdrops want to study plant reproductive biology. There are eleven chapters in this book and are edited to go from the easy to the difficult and complicated. The author brought up ample important hypotheses, principles, theories and broad viewpoints over the years of each topic. He interpreted and discussed every example and case elaborately and objectively. There are also well-arranged figures and pictures in black and white. The author talked about advantages and disadvantages of various plant breeding systems based on evolution and genetics points of views heavily. Although there are numerous difficult professional terms, the author not only elucidated those terms right after mentioning about them, but also concluded a complete glossary in this book.

Quickie Classical Reference Book.......2007-02-27
This is an excellent little reference book for the ancient Greco-Roman Classical world. Great for the student of ancient history or mythology or for classical allusions in literature or political science made to this day.
An invaluable reference!.......1998-04-16
This book offers invaluable references for travel, literature art...heck, even songs by Sting! I purchased my first copy while in art school where I couldn't keep straight all of the tales of love, betrayal and revenge in the ancient world. After four months in Italy and Greece it is worn, torn and lovingly wine stained, but it has served me well. I used it to decipher names on structures in the Roman Forum and to reveal the meaning of paintings in the Ufizzi. Without it my travels would not have been nearly as rich.

Book Description
The new Oxford Who's Who series offers a unique library of some of the world's greatest and most enduring literary, religious, and folklore traditions. Alphabetically arranged for easy accessibilty, the thousands of engagingly written entries cover every character in their related fields,
providing readers with the most comprehensive and wide-ranging reference collection of its kind.
Most books on mythology are primarily concerned with the Greek and Roman tradition, giving the equally vibrant myths of other cultures short shrift. Providing a much-needed solution to this problem, this unique guide offers wide-ranging and thorough coverage of non-classical mythological figures,
from the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas to Zu, the lion-headed Sumerian storm bird. With its global, multicultural perspective, Who's Who in Non-Classical Mythology presents exciting and readable accounts of the gods, heroes, and myths of Europe (including the Celts, Teutons, Slavs, and
Basques), the Americas, Africa, Australia, China, Japan, and Indonesia. For those interested in a fresh approach to world mythology it is indispensable; for lovers of the classical tradition it will open up a whole new world.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, but somewhat outdated.......2000-05-19
While Kendall's revision dates to 1993, Sykes wrote the bulk of this in 1952 and in the intervening years, new discoveries and translations have made some parts of some entries inaccurate. The book is in standard, alphabetical format, with entries on deities ranging from a brief sentence to a couple of paragraphs. Their roles in myths are necessarily very briefly summarized although a number of entries on the creation legends of various cultures are more fully developed, running as long as a couple pages.
This book is best used as a launching point for further investigation. Find an entry that sparks your interest and then track down a fuller version of the myths or legends wherein they feature. Otherwise, it serves as a fair quick reference guide, but I wouldn't consider it authoritative.

Book Description
Who's Who in Classical Mythology is a comprehensive dictionary of classical names that contains more than 1,200 entries detailing the origins of Greek and Roman mythological themes. This excellent compilation is a valuable resource for students studying the classics, and for anyone interested in mythology and classical history.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource Material.......2001-06-22
This is a supurb dictionary of Greek, Roman, and other gods and goddesses that leaves nothing out. Everything from Abas to Zeuxippe! If want to know more about any character from classical mythology, it's in here. I am currently writing a book of my own, for which this book proved an indispensible resource.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read Book!!!!!.......2006-05-03
The Golden Fleece has many parts that are interesting in it. It is very adventurous, it keeps you wanting to read more. One part in the Golden Fleece is when Orpheaus is telling the story of Medusa. Then Perseus went and chopped of the Gorgon's head off by using a shield that he had found and a sword given to him by the gods he then goes and goes shows this to the king that wouldn't allow him to enter his kingdom and rescue his mother from the king that wants to marry her. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in mythology.
a master of language.......2005-08-29
Padraic Colum is a great story teller and he has done a marvellous job here. Over a period of years, I have read this book to my children three times. They continued to enjoy the rich texture of the language in these stories and each time found new levels of meaning. For young people there is no better introduction to these stories.
the golden fleece.......2002-10-07
I think that the golden fleece was a great book and had great illistrations, and detail in the story a few places are a little rough but still a great book. It whould be a little better if it did'int keep skiping story's
The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles.......2002-02-09
I've taught 6th grade for more than a decade so I'm quite familiar with the Greek heroes. That's why I was so disappointed to discover that this is one of the most boring versions of the Greek myths I've ever read. Perhaps in 1922, when it was new, it excited children to research further, but modern kids find the language stulted and the action almost non-existent. Far better versions of these stories exist. Unfortunately for me, taken in by good reviews, I bought twenty copies for classroom use before discovering how deadly dull it was. If you have a kid whose read everything else, s/he might be interested, otherwise just forget it.
An introduction to Greek mythology........1999-05-19
This volume by the transplanted Irish poet Padraic Colum is a well-known introduction to Greek mythology for children. It was a runner-up to the first (1922) Newbery Medal for best contribution to American children's literature. In the framework of telling the story of Jason and the Argonauts, other noted stories are told (e.g., Theseus and the Minotaur, the labors of Hercules, etc.). In this edition, the artwork is in the style of the 1920s. You can even imagine "flappers" dancing. Children enjoy this introduction and search for more.
Book Description
Who's Who in Classical Mythology is an indispensable guide to all the Greek and Roman mythological characters, from major deities such as Athena and Bacchus, to the lesser-known wood nymphs and centaurs. Also included, of course, are the heroic mortals, figures such as Jason, Aeneas, Helen, Achilles, and Odysseus, all brought to life in a fascinating series of portraits drawn from a wide variety of ancient literary sources. Each entry offers a small window into a timeless mythological world, one filled with epic battles, bizarre metamorphoses, and all sorts of hideous and fantastic monsters. The perfect book for casual browsers and folklore enthusiasts alike, Who's Who in Classical Mythology offers a rich and readable guide to some of the greatest stories ever told.
Customer Reviews:
one of the best.......2002-10-05
This book is one of the best i've ever read on Greek/Roman myth, and i've read many in my life. This book contains entries on characters rarely found anywhere else such as Nox, the Greek personification of night. As such i often use this book as a measuring stick against other books in this area.
Great Reference On-The-Fly.......2002-05-01
Grant and Hazel have provided a finely grained and authoritative dictionary-style reference that is quite handy for identification of any figure from classical mythology. The book will prove useful for keeping at one's side when reading Homer, Hesiod, Sophocles, Euripides and company. Very helpful appendices include genealogical trees, alphabetical list of classical authors referred to, and clear and informative maps.
Resource Only.......2001-07-25
Who's Who is an excellent resource, but it is not meant for those who wish to sit down and read Greek myths. The book is set up in an encyclopedic fashion. References to specific Greek mythological figures are easy to locate. However if you are looking for Greek myths in story form, this is not the text for you.
Excellent resource and excellent fun.......2000-06-26
I bought this book as preparation for a Mediterranean study-cruise. It is a sort of encyclopedia of Greek and Roman mythology. Any classical mythological name can be found here with a synopsis of their major stories Just be warned: each character's story tends to be so interesting as to lead you to look up all the other characters that appear, and you will find yourself reading for hours.
