        Book Description

The study of sliding friction is one of the oldest problems in physics, and certainly one of the most important from a practical point of view. It has been estimated that about 5% of the gross national product in the developed countries is `wasted' on friction and related wear. The topic of interfacial sliding has experienced a major burst of interest and activity since 1987, much of which has developed quite independently and spontaneously. This volume contains contributions from leading scientists on fundamental aspects of sliding friction. Some of the problems considered are: What is the origin of stick-and-slip motion? What is the origin of the rapid processes taking place within a lubrication layer at slow sliding velocities? On a metallic surface, is the electronic or phononic friction the dominant energy dissipation process? What is the role (if any) of self-organized criticality in sliding friction? How thick is the water layer during sliding on ice and snow? These and other questions are of course only partly answered: the topic of sliding friction is still in an early state of development.

          Book Description

Sliding friction is one of the oldest problems in physics and certainly one of the most important from a practical point of view. The ability to produce durable low-friction surfaces and lubricant fluids has become an important factor in the miniaturization of moving components in many technological devices, e.g. magnetic storage, recording systems, miniature motors and many aerospace components. This book will be useful to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers who want to understand sliding friction. The book (or parts of it) could also form the basis for a modern undergraduate or graduate course on tribology. This second edition covers several new topics including friction on superconductors, experimental studies and computer simulations of the layering transition, nanoindentation, wear in combustion engines, rubber wear, effects due to humidity, rolling and sliding of carbon nanotubes and the friction dynamics of granular materials.

5 out of 5 stars Personal opinion: "Sliding Friction" by B.N.J. Persson.......2001-07-01

The book by B.N.J. Persson has a unique position in the field of tribology. It manages to bridge naturally many length scales phenomena into a single comprehensive frame work, from macroscopic mechanics of friction and wear down to atomic level. The book gives an excellent overview of current state of scientific knowledge, and it is very useful both for beginners in the field and experts. As a Ph.D student, the book helped me to get familiar and interested in the field, and it is still a major reference for many of the things I do.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview with emphasis on the physical principles.......2000-10-06

Many different mechanisms can give rise to energy dissipation is sliding friction, depending on whether you are dealing with dry friction, boundary lubrication, hydrodynamic lubrication, or maybe electronic friction. In Bo Persson's book the physical models that capture the essential mechanisms of each regime are clearly described. At the same time, the reader learns about many recent (as well as classical) experiments in the field, including a broad list of references . I recommend the book to both graduate students and anybody who is working in the field or interested in the physical mechanisms of sliding friction.

          5 out of 5 stars Understanding friction.......2000-09-25

This book is an excellent introduction to the physics of sliding friction. It puts an emphasis on the microscopic mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of friction. Everything is explained in a very clear way. Mathematics is kept to a minimum and only used to clarify things. The book also covers, in contrast to traditional books on tribology, topics like the friction on superconductors. I can recommend this book to both experienced scientists and graduate students who are interested in the physics of friction. I am sure you will enjoy reading it. Have fun!

                Book Description

The world of economics is a complicated and messy place. Yet modern economic analysis rests on an attempt to represent the world by means of simple mathematical models. To what extent is this possible? How can such a program cope with the fact that economic outcomes are often driven by factors that are notoriously difficult to quantify? Can such mathematical modeling lead us to theories that work? In these lectures, John Sutton explores what he calls the "standard paradigm" that lies at the heart of economic model building, whose roots go back a century to the work of Alfred Marshall. In probing the strengths and limitations of this paradigm, he looks at some of the remarkable successes, as well as deep disappointments, that have flowed from it.

5 out of 5 stars A nice illustration of the interpretation power of economics.......2003-06-12

The students who enter the field of economics, or any other social science disciplines that employ mathematical models in explaining the world around us, may start being suspicious about the explanation power of these models at some point. How could the messy and complex issues be reduced to ONE simple model?

Sutton's book is a very nice piece of work that would help resolve tthis puzzle. Start with the STANDARD PARADIGM commonly used in modeling complex issues in social sciences, particularly in economics, Sutton pins down the limitations of these paradigm in a very easy understanding yet profound way. The next chapter starts some models that work, from a game theoretical perspective. Chapter 3, however, emphasizes the difficulties of constructing a complete model. Finally, the last chapter provides a vivid example of Sutton's argument regarding the pitfalls of modeling and its application in real life.

This nice little book is by far the best I have read in terms of explaining why social sciences are so messy, even with the introduction of nice, elegant mathematical models. It is hard to find "black-and-write" answers in social science, indeed. However, bearing in mind the importance and limitation of using mathematical models would help social scientists face the and frustration in a constructive way.

Set within a framing narrative, these three stories take place in the years following the Jacobite defeat and feature characters who are leaving Scotland to seek their fortunes elsewhere. In two of Walter Scott's best-known tales, The Highland Widow and The Two Drovers, two young men are torn between traditional Scottish loyalties and the opportunities offered by England. The Surgeon's Daughter follows three young Scots to India during the first years of the British Empire. All three highlight Scott's unique gift for re-creating the spirit of historical eras and painting stirring portraits of Scottish people.

This indeed was the feeling with which she was regarded by the Highlanders in the neighbourhood, who looked upon Elspat MacTavish, or the Woman of the Tree, as they called her, as the Greeks considered those who were pursued by the Furies, and endured the mental torment consequent on great criminal actions. They regarded such unhappy beings as Orestes and OEdipus, as being less the voluntary perpetrators of their crimes than as the passive instruments by which the terrible decrees of Destiny had been accomplished; and the fear with which they beheld them was not unmingled with veneration.

5 out of 5 stars A Scholarly, yet Accessible, Edition.......2005-01-08

This edition of Chronicles of the Canongate is scholarly enough to allow students of Scott's work, or Scotish Literature, to develop new insights to the work itself and to the contexts surrounding it's production in relation to Scott's own situation when writing it. At the same time, it is made accessible to the general reader through well researched textual notes, including translations of the Latin phrases peppered throughout the text, and a glossary of unfamiliar (most usually Gaelic or Scotish) words and phrases, allowing for an informed--and consequently more enjoyable, reading. I was directed to this edition of the "Chronicles" through a conference paper, recently presented at the MLA (2004) Conference in Philadelphia, concerning the story "The Two Drovers"--one of the better known stories in the "Chronicles". I am not disappointed in that recommendation. And I highly recommend this volume, in turn. The text, as a whole, presents a marvellous opportunity for readers to "experience" Scott through relatively short works, before taking on one of his larger (in terms of scope), longer novels.

With Wilkin Flammock, Henry held much conference, particularly on his subject of manufactures and commerce; on which the sound- headed, though blunt-spoken Fleming, was well qualified to instruct an intelligent monarch. "Thy intentions," he said, "shall not be forgotten, good fellow, though they have been anticipated by the headlong valour of my son Richard, which has cost some poor caitiffs their lives--Richard loves not to sheathe a bloodless weapon. But thou and thy countrymen shall return to thy mills yonder, with a full pardon for past offences, so that you meddle no more with such treasonable matters."

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read from the late 12th century.......2001-09-03

In this entertaining volume, Scott characterizes the unrest between England and Wales in the year 1187, during the time of the Crusades. The Western Marches had not yet been subdued by English authority, and clouds of banditti continue to make inroads into English territory. Our characters are besieged in a castle that only at the moment of crisis is it put into a posture of defense to withstand the siege. A phlegmatic Fleming and his daughter form the sensible counters to the hot-blooded English family who owns the castle. Intrigues and sorcery (the product of the times), conflicts between religion, the foreign wars, infighting within the family (when a son would murder his father for his possessions) all have equal place here. A fascinating glimpse of the times, and a highly readable story make this yet another jewel in Scott's wonderful body of historical fiction.
