Generally Good Information.......2004-05-19

As an owner of the second and third editions, I found the second edition's physical qualities (paper, printing quality, etc.) to be better than the third edition's. Mr. Messina is mistaken when he indicates that my previous review was based on the second edition. I had ordered (through Amazon) the book on a waiting list and got it shortly after it was published. It is sitting next to me as I type. The second edition is in my office.

Pump Handbook, 3rd Edition review.......2002-09-26

I can't confess as having read the whole book as it is very extensive, but from what I've read so far I can provide the following review.

As an EPC Engineer with vessels/exchanger experience, I don't have much experience with centrifugal pumps. Therefore I bought the 3rd Edition of the Pump Handbook to quickly learn more about all kinds of pumps and bone up on pump basics. This book meets all my expectation for technical content to learn about pumps. The book provides detail explanation about all kinds of pumps, their parts, and provides disadvantage/advantage of each type. It even goes in detail on impeller design calculations.

Sadly, this 3rd Edition is diminished by poor graphics. About 50% of the pictures and graphs are blurry and not printed too clear or focused. Maybe the 2nd Edition might be better in this respect. Otherwise, this is a MUST HAVE book for any Engineer or pump user to have.

Pump Handbook.......2001-03-12

Handbook is a term which implies comprehensive coverage of a given subject, so often a term which is misapplied. Not so in this case however, this book is without a doubt one of the best sources of information on pumps and related system components currently in print. For anyone requiring a comprehensive pump resource, this is it. I would definitely recommend this one for the engineering library.

Description corrections.......2000-12-28

I am one of the four editors of this handbook. Please note the correct number of pages is 1765. The 2nd edition has the 1280 pages presently described. After the name Charles Heald add that he is an editor also. The 2nd and 3rd reviewers are referring to the 2nd edition of the handbook as they are dated before the 3rd edition was printed.

Third Edition Builds on Success of First and Second.......2000-12-13

As an owner of the second edition, I looked forward to the revised update. The quality of the information is high. However, I was disappointed in the quality of the publication. Some of the graphs and charts seemed "muddy" with hard to read notations. Also, the binding and paper quality seemed to have slipped a little. This seems to be a trend. I own a number of texts from the 1950's. Their binding and paper quality is much better than that used today.

Save your money........2006-11-12

I was very disappointed with this book. The information is sparse at best. I was hoping for step by step photographs. Nope. Not a single photograph anywhere in this book. I needed to know how to slaughter ducks. The only information on ducks is how to pluck them. Ducks are a much larger, heavier bird than chickens. Do you slaughter them the same way? I don't know. It's not addressed in the book. Frankly, you can get more information by "googling" than you can with this book.

Here's the thing - trying to learn how to butcher animals entirely from a book is kind of like trying to learn how to fly an airplane entirely from a book: the book's alright, but most of your understanding will come from being taught or mentored personally.

Anyway, this is about as good as you could hope for in a book. I bought it a couple of years ago when I kept sheep, and it did come in handy sometimes. But if you are serious about learning how to slaughter/butcher, my advice is to seek out a local guy who can show you personally how to do it. You'll learn way more that way, and far more quickly.

Where is the button for 10 stars?.......2005-04-17

Every now and then you come across a book which is right on the spot. It's written by someone who is willing and capable to share his/her wealth of knowledge in a CLEAR way. This is one of those few books. From beef to rabbit, from pork to deer it teaches how to butcher. I read it a few times, I bought a whole lamb (with hide and guts) and I butchered it. I wouldn't say I made a work of art but all the cuts are there: back legs roasts. racks, riblets, roasts, trimmings. Don't expect instruction on fancy cuts: it's not the purpose of this book. The need of a power saw is slightly understated, though. If you butcher a large animal and you are not Hulk-sized, you may want to get one ... Absolutely recommended.

A Must Have For Hunters.......2003-12-16

This is an excellent book. This should be a required purchase for everyone who takes to the woods in pursuit of wild game for the table.

No more wasting meat or spending big money by taking your wild game to a professional meat processor, all you need to know is right here.

I highly recommend this book, especially to hunters and outdoorsmen.

The best introduction to Jaspers.......2004-07-01

I've read a _lot_ of (and about) Jaspers, but this book has proven the most effective resource for my Jaspers studies.

Ehrlich, Ehrlich, and Pepper selected excerpts from throughout Jaspers' career in philosophy (not a lot from his psychology, as the title indicates). They then grouped these texts together in logical and cohesive sections, adding short introductions to each section as well as each individual text. The result: it is possible to sit down and read the collection cover-to-cover and feel the continuity of the work.

E, E, and P have gotten over a major hurdle in making Jaspers' work accessible. Many of the available translations of Jaspers are sub-par. Jaspers' frequent coinage and usage of technical jargon has posed a translation problem (i.e. words that no one knows exactly how to translate) that has resulted in discrepancies between translations. E, E, and P resolve this (to a large degree) by retranslating or correcting many of the passages in this book. Since I happened to have both a German and an English (trans. E. B. Ashton) copy of Jaspers' 3 volume work "Philosophie" -- a text quoted often in this volume -- I compared translations. E, E, and P's revisions to E. B. Ashton's translation were consistently more readible.

In addition to providing a fantastic overview of Jaspers, this volume does have a couple of other highlights:
* Many passages translated from Von Der Wahrheit -- Jaspers' last major work (which remains largely untranslated).

* Great coverage of some of his writings on religion (Buddhism, Christian mysticism, etc.)
* Selected entries from his journals.
* Correspondence with other philosophers (notably Arendt and Heidegger).

In short, I highly recommend this book for those looking for a good Jaspers reader. If you are new to Jaspers, I would also suggest reading Philosophy of Existenz -- a great (and short) overview of Jaspers' project.

fine collection of essential writings...........2000-05-27

....Jaspers is difficult reading in places but has a plenitude of existentially worthwhile ideas: historicity, Existenz, the Encompassing... worth the trouble.

Description:
Ozone (O"3) concentrations in East Asia were simulated using the Community Multi-scale Air Quality model and their reproducibility was confirmed by comparing with observation data at Japanese monitoring sites. The model can reproduce the seasonal variation of surface O"3 over Japan. In particular, for the southern parts of Japan, simulated surface O"3 concentrations are strongly correlated with observations. Surface O"3 distribution over East Asia varies dynamically from season to season according to the meteorological condition. In May and June, 2-month average O"3 concentrations in the boundary layer are highest, 55-70ppbv over East China and Japan at 35-40^oN. We estimated the seasonal variation of the contribution of chemically produced O"3 by east Asian regional emissions. In the summertime, the contribution of the regional Asian emissions to O"3 concentrations is around 40-70% over most of China, and the highest is 60-70% ( <35ppbv) at the mouth area of Yantze River. This suggests that O"3 concentrations over East Asia are strongly influenced by the chemical production by regional emissions during summer season. However, the inflow from outside of this model domain also contributes substantial O"3 concentration over East Asia and its contribution is predominant in winter and early spring. The seasonal change of O"3 concentrations over Japan is characterized by two peaks in spring and autumn and summer minimum. The spring peak event in 2002 consists of split peaks: the first peak in Mar-Apr is mainly influenced by the inflow from outside of this model domain, the second spring peak between May and June is mainly influenced by chemically produced O"3 by regional emissions. During the summer season, O"3 concentrations are the lowest over year because of the weak Asian outflow and northward penetration of the marine air mass.

A ghost story where no one seems particularly haunted by the ghosts themselves but rather by the event that led to their passing and what could have been.

Five teenagers were involved in a car crash on Halloween. Two of them survived, one without injury the other with a traumatic and disfiguring brain injury.

We meet the narrator, who died in the crash, on the eve of the first anniversary of the accident. We see how the accident has changed the lives of the survivors, their parents and the police officer who was first on the scene.

I liked the teenagers and their gallows humor. I liked Brooks, the cop who found them after the crash. O'Nan thoughtfully examines the issue of quality of life and the struggles of those who care for the elderly, infirm and debilitated.

The writing was very good, the characters believable and the emotions portrayed very realistic. I enjoyed it while I was reading it. It's certainly no inspirational or uplifting story. But O'Nan does the bummer very well.

O'Nan is no stranger to horror or the horrific, having penned the International Horror Guild Award winning novel A PRAYER FOR THE DYING and THE CIRCUS FIRE, a non-fiction account of the 1944 Hartford, CT Ringling Brothers tragedy. Dedicated to Ray Bradbury, THE NIGHT COUNTRY explores some highly charged emotional terrain, dealing with the aftermath of a tragic car accident. Touching and poignant, it chronicles the activities of the living and the dead on the anniversary of that tragic event.

Not what I expected at all, but so much more. A sad tale of survivor's guilt narrated by a trio of dead friends who can do nothing but witness the pain and emotional deterioration of their loved ones.

this book is beautifully written, to say the least. there is not a whole lot of room for character development, but mr. o'nan does a wonderful job of getting the reader involved with the characters. you can really feel their pain, and that's something special to be able to do that in such a short interval. its not really scary, but it is more of a drama and the way it is told, i have never seen before...very creative, and a joy to read. pick it up, and give it a try...

Sad And Sweet.......2006-04-16

O'Nan's The Night Country is a beautifully written account of a suburban tragedy. High school kids killed in a car wreck and the aftermath that follows as seen from the point of view of the deceased. As absurd as this seems on the surface, O'Nan pulls it off by including so many real details in the setting of the story. In much the same way Stephen King uses brand names and pop-culture references, O'Nan uses real locations in such great detail that the story has a true air of realism. Dunkin' Donuts and Stop-n-Shop should pay O'Nan for the free advertising. The reader will be easily pulled along for a melancholy ride that could leave lasting depression. Unfortunately, there is no redemption in this story. It has an unavoidable ending that is completely expected against all hope. This is not a book for horror crowd, although it might be presented as such in some of its jacket blurbs. It really has much more in common with Alice Sebold than Dean Koontz. It is a highly recomended read with two caveats-don't expect surprises or a happy ending. You might not enjoy it but you will feel it.
