    Book Description

This volume offers a well-organized overview of prion-related diseases. It reviews the symptoms, epidemiology, and neuropathology of the disease, and focuses on the idea that TSEs result from a novel mechanism involving transmission by replication of the misfolding of a single protein. The author, a renowned innovator in the area of neurodegenerative diseases, examines the structure, conversion, and mechanism of prion propagation and details its cellular biology. He also looks at other diseases that display folding aberrations, considers how common such aberrations are, and speculates on the impact of prions on broader areas of biology, public health, and biotechnological strategies.

        Book Description

Although primarily concerned with the treatment of wastewater and water quality, publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) are required to be in compliance with the Federal Clean Air Act and an increasingly stringent series of Clean Air Act Amendments to control emissions of odors, criteria pollutants, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). How POTWs demonstrate, document, or show compliance with federal and state or local quality laws and regulations can vary significantly from POTW to POTW and from state to state. VOC Emissions from Wastewater Treatment Plants: Characterization, Control, and Compliance provides the tools, concepts, policies, and information required to develop an air quality compliance plan and to assess the labor and capital requirements to maintain the plan's viability. With contributions from a panel of experts and authoritative editorial guidance, the book reflects many viewpoints and approaches based on various air quality compliance and assessment conditions and experiences. The editors use this body of knowledge to develop a clear picture of how to design, set up, and maintain a successful air quality compliance program. Building on this foundation, VOC Emissions from Wastewater Treatment Plants: Characterization, Control, and Compliance shows you how to create a comprehensive, complete program that includes POTW-specific air emissions inventory information, measurement techniques, and viable control options.

            Book Description

This book discusses recent research and developments related to characterization and utilization of petroleum-derived asphaltenes. Chapters cover computer simulation of physical density and thermal properties, precise measurements of molecular weights of asphaltene, estimation of structural parameter distribution, characterization of refractory sulfur compounds, hydrotreatment, cracking, visbreaking, and coking reactivities. In petroleum industries, heavy petroleum residue due to enhanced oil recovery is becoming a serious problem. Heavy oils cause problems during oil production and refining processes. Increased viscosities reduce, or even stop, the flow of oil during oil production. Meanwhile in refining processes, their undesired precipitation, high tendency to form coke, and catalyst deactivation and poisoning should be involved.

                            Book Description

The material in this book is situated at the juncture of the automata theory, logic, computational complexity and semigroup theory. The first part of the book is devoted to the algebraic characterization of the regular languages definable in many different logical theories. This includes older results of Büchi on monadic second-order language, and of McNaughton and Papert on first-order logic and star-free languages, as well as many more recent developments that have never been treated in book form. The second part presents the recently-discovered connections between the algebraic theory of the automata and the complexity theory of small-depth circuits.

This self-contained work is suitable for use as a text for a course. Exercises appear at the end of each chapter, some to test knowledge, others to extend the investigation. Citations at the end of each chapter provide a useful guide to related topics mentioned in the text of the chapter. The book will be welcomed by both advanced students and researchers in theoretical computer science, algebra, and mathematical logic.

                              Book Description

This book studies the relationship between automata and monadic second-order logic, focusing on classes of automata that describe the concurrent behavior of distributed systems. It provides a unifying theory of communicating automata and their logical properties. Based on Hanf's Theorem and Thomas's graph acceptors, it develops a result that allows us to characterize many popular models of distributed computation in terms of the existential fragment of monadic second-order logic. In particular, the book covers finite automata, asynchronous (cellular) automata, communicating finite-state machines, and lossy channel systems. Model behavior is described using graphs and partial orders, leading to the notions of Mazurkiewicz traces, message sequence charts, and live sequence charts. This book is suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate courses on advanced automata theory, concurrency and communication issues. It can also be used as a reference by researchers concerned with the formal modeling of concurrent systems. Some knowledge of automata theory is a prerequisite. Numerous exercises, chapter summaries, and suggested reading allow for self-study, while the book is supported with a website containing course material and solutions.

                                  Book Description

Automata and Languages presents a step-by-step development of the theory of automata, languages and computation. Intended to be used as the basis of an introductory course to this theory at both junior and senior levels, the text is organized in such a way as to allow the design of various courses based on selected material. Areas featured in the book include:- * basic models of computation * formal languages and their properties * computability, decidability and complexity * a discussion of the modern trends in the theory of automata and formal languages * design of programming languages, including the development of a new programming language * compiler design, including the construction of a complete compiler Alexander Meduna uses clear definitions, easy-to-follow proofs and helpful examples to make formerly obscure concepts easy to understand. He also includes challenging exercises and programming projects to enhance the reader's comprehension, and, to put the theory firmly into a 'real world' context, he presents lots of realistic illustrations and applications in practical computer science.

                                        Book Description

Interest in finite automata theory continues to grow, not only because of its applications in computer science, but also because of more recent applications in mathematics, particularly group theory and symbolic dynamics. The subject itself lies on the boundaries of mathematics and computer science, and with a balanced approach that does justice to both aspects, this book provides a well-motivated introduction to the mathematical theory of finite automata. The first half of Finite Automata focuses on the computer science side of the theory and culminates in Kleene's Theorem, which the author proves in a variety of ways to suit both computer scientists and mathematicians. In the second half, the focus shifts to the mathematical side of the theory and constructing an algebraic approach to languages. Here the author proves two main results: Schützenberger's Theorem on star-free languages and the variety theorem of Eilenberg and Schützenberger. Accessible even to students with only a basic knowledge of discrete mathematics, this treatment develops the underlying algebra gently but rigorously, and nearly 200 exercises reinforce the concepts. Whether your students' interests lie in computer science or mathematics, the well organized and flexible presentation of Finite Automata provides a route to understanding that you can tailor to their particular tastes and abilities.

I love this book. Richard Buchi has a very fresh and unique approach to the subject that I find absolutely en-trancing. It is easy to get caught up in the theory as he builds it slowly, methodically, but elegantly. Most of all, the theory he builds is very beautiful and joyful to behold. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their horizons and take a fresh magical journey into the world of finite automata and their algebras. Definitely not to be missed and very good "read". I wish everyone could have this book on their bookshelves.

                                            Book Description

Based on the highly praised second edition of The Oxford Companion to Classical Literature, this is the only concise guide to ancient Greek and Roman literature available in paperback. Complete with translations of all Greek and Latin words, it is ideal for anyone interested in the classical world and its literary heritage. In addition to accounts of the lives and works of key authors, entries on important characters, plot summaries, and details of the development of such literary forms as comedy and tragedy, the Companion also offers comprehensive historical, political, social, and artistic background information.

If Harris Media ever sends this product to me, I will review it. Until then, I have entered complaints everywhere. It has been recommended on sites for GRE Subject Test in Literature preparation. I wish it took less than a month to receive it. Then I might have something to say... Except never ever order from Harris Media.

Much better than the older version "The Oxford Companion to Classical Literature"( by Sir Paul Harvey ). Although it has neither maps nor illustrations , it contains more abundant entries & contents.

I recommend the book for everybody from a young puppil to an aged scholar.
