Microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are the key components for the aggregation of microorganisms in biofilms, flocs and sludge. They are composed of polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and other biological macromolecules. EPS provide a highly hydrated gel matrix in which microbial cells can establish stable synergistic consortia. Cohesion and adhesion as well as morphology, structure, biological function and other properties such as mechanical stability, diffusion, sorption and optical properties of microbial aggregates are determined by the EPS matrix. Also, the protection of biofilm organisms against biocides is attributed to the EPS. Their matrix allows phase separation in biofiltration and is also important for the degradation of particulate material which is of great importance for the self purification processes in surface waters and for waste water treatment.

Heinrich Caro (1834--1910) was the inventor of new chemical processes that in the two decades commencing in 1869 enabled BASF of Ludwigshafen, Germany, to take first place among manufacturers of synthetic dyestuffs. The cornerstones of Caro's success were his early training as calico (cotton) printer in Germany, and his employment at a chemical firm in Manchester, England. Caro was a creative research chemist, a highly knowledgeable patent specialist and expert witness, and a brilliant manager of science-based chemical technology. This first full-length scientific biography of Heinrich Caro delineates his role in the emergence of the industrial research laboratory, the forging of links between academic and industrial chemistry, and the development of modern patent law. Major chemical topics include the rise of classical organic chemistry, collaboration with Adolf Baeyer, artificial alizarin and indigo, aniline dyes, and other coal-tar products, particularly intermediates.

Dirac operators play an important role in several domains of mathematics and physics, for example: index theory, elliptic pseudodifferential operators, electromagnetism, particle physics, and the representation theory of Lie groups. In this essentially self-contained work, the basic ideas underlying the concept of Dirac operators are explored. Starting with Clifford algebras and the fundamentals of differential geometry, the text focuses on two main properties, namely, conformal invariance, which determines the local behavior of the operator, and the unique continuation property dominating its global behavior. Spin groups and spinor bundles are covered, as well as the relations with their classical counterparts, orthogonal groups and Clifford bundles. The chapters on Clifford algebras and the fundamentals of differential geometry can be used as an introduction to the above topics, and are suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate students. The other chapters are also accessible at this level so that this text requires very little previous knowledge of the domains covered. The reader will benefit, however, from some knowledge of complex analysis, which gives the simplest example of a Dirac operator. More advanced readers---mathematical physicists, physicists and mathematicians from diverse areas---will appreciate the fresh approach to the theory as well as the new results on boundary value theory.

This book by Prof Yang is an excellent book for people want to know more about piezoelectricity and piezoelectric devices.

It starts with a complete theory of piezoelectricity with the intention to get readers familirize with the fundamentals. This part is complicated from its appearance, but there is a purpose. Such formulation is essential in dealing with complicated issues which discussed in detail later, ie the effect of various bias fields like thermo, stress, acceleration and so on.

After descriptions of the basic nonlinear theory, the chapters followed restore to the linear theory for various strctural elements and applications as devices. It touched almost all applications of acosutic devices with simple analytical solutions.

The methods and techniques are not directly related to the engineering solutions of actual problems, but it is the first step you have to take towards the direction.

I highly recommend this book to graduate students and engineers who are interested in advanced knowledge on this subject.

Quien los dijera, son historias moralistas.......2001-04-21

Nunca antes había leído una obra de Sade y la verdad me agradó encontrar que de las distintas veinte o mas historias que forman parte de esta colección, dos hechos se destacan. Primero carecen de cualquier lenguaje explicito en temas sexuales. Mas bien es un divertido uso de alegorías y dobles sentidos. Además tenemos una fuerte condena a la doble moral y ausencia de principios que eran y son parte integral de la iglesia y de toda persona (políticos, abogados, magistrados y especies semejantes) que utilizan si posición de privilegio para imponer ideas y formas de vida que luego son ellos son los primeros en violentar.

Sin duda alguna los escritos de Sade eran valientes, al exigir dentro de la sociedad en la que vivía respeto para las decisiones individuales en que cada persona ejerce y goza de su sexualidad. Tal petición, incluso considerando de los muchos logros que se han dado en estos dos siglos, aún sigue vigente. Su irreverencia era la de una persona inteligente que ve claramente que el emperador no esta vestido y que la autoridad jamás podrá ser un valor en si misma.

Queda advertido que sí lo que busca son historias que le alteren la libido, le va mejor comprando un libro de cocina.
