Book Description
This book introduces the concepts and methodologies related to the modelling of the complex phenomena occurring in materials processing. After a short reminder of conservation laws and constitutive relationships, the authors introduce the main numerical methods: finite differences, finite volumes and finite elements. These techniques are developed in three main chapters of the book that tackle more specific problems: phase transformation, solid mechanics and fluid flow. The two last chapters treat inverse methods to obtain the boundary conditions or the material properties and stochastic methods for microstructural simulation. This book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering and physics and for engineering professionals or researchers who want to get acquainted with numerical simulation to model and compute materials processing.

Modelling at the continuum scale.......2005-01-27
With the increased power and availability of computers, computer aided modeling is becoming more prevalent in various fields of engineering. One important example is modelling of stress, strain, and flow (plastic solid and liquid) at the continuum level. Examples of this are finite element analysis, finite difference analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, and the random walk. This book covers all of these topics and generally serves as a good introductory textbook to learn about modelling at the continuum scale. The mathematical treatment is very brisk though, and requires prior knowledge of linear and partial differential equations, linear algebra, and basic computing.

Book Description
In the area of geomechanics, sophisticated sampling and analytical techniques can be used to provide accurate ground and soil information, but only within the limits of the initial assumptions and the modelling used. The accuracy of the model can be increased by the use of computer based numerical modelling and analysis, especially the finite element method.
In this volume, experts from all over the world describe how different methods of analysis and modelling are used to answer some of the questions associated with geomechanics, and give an insight into the future directions of those methods.

Book Description
The aim of this book is to describe the methods leading to mechanical and numerical modelling of the linear vibrations of elastic structures coupled with internal fluids (sloshing, hydroelasticity and structural acoustics). It is characteristic of the problems under consideration that they are multidisciplinary involving structural and fluid representation and related numerical aspects. The problems are solved by direct resolution of the coupled systems by finite element methods and modal reduction procedures using the eigenmodes of elementary subsystems. The numerical methods described in this book have applications in various engineering disciplines such as the automotive and aerospace industries, civil engineering, nuclear engineering and bioengineering.

Book Description
Composite materials are increasingly used in many applications because they offer the engineer a range of advantages over traditional materials. They are often used in situations where a specified level of performance is required, but where the cost of testing the materials under the extremes of those specifications is very high. In order to solve this problem, engineers are turning to computer Modelling to evaluate the materials under the range of conditions they are likely to encounter. Many of these analyses are carried out in isolation, and yet the evaluation of a range of composites can be carried out using the same basic principles.
In this new book the editor has brought together an international panel of authors, each of whom is working on the analysis and Modelling of composite materials. The overage of the book is deliberately wide; to illustrate that similar principles and methods can be used to model and evaluate a wide range of materials. It is also hoped that, by bringing together this range of topics, the insight gained in the study of one composite can be recognized and utilized in the study of others.
Professional engineers involved in the specification and testing of composite material structures will find this book an invaluable resource in the course of their work. It will also be of interest to those industrial and academic engineers involved in the design, development, manufacture and applications of composite materials.

Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2003-07-01
Pros: I liked very much this book. It is very well written and easy to read. If you don't like fortran, no matter!! I developed a Matlab code from the explanations on the first two chaps. The subjects covered (from fluid flow and solid deformations to special relativistic motions) are well documented and plenty of examples, making them very easy to follow. I've tryed the method, and I find it a very good one to simulate fragmentation flows.
Cons:The references provided are very good (they're a lot, as well!), but I think that they're not enogh linked with the text. Also, it will be interesting if the book devote a little more emphasis in fluid flow... the book fails (as far as I've seen all the literature in particle modelling using this method fails too) to describe a way to calculate pressure.
Summarizing, you'll find this book is worth your bucks!

Book Description
When a disturbed young Russian man came to Freud for treatment, the analysis of his childhood neuroses-most notably a dream about wolves outside his bedroom window-eventually revealed a deep-seated trauma. It took more than four years to treat him, and "The Wolfman" became one of Freud's most famous cases. This volume also contains the case histories of a boy's fear of horses and the Ratman's violent fear of rats, as well as the essay "Some Character Types," in which Freud draws on the work of Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Nietzsche to demonstrate different kinds of resistance to therapy. Above all, the case histories show us Freud at work, in his own words.
Translated by Louise Adey Huish.
