Book Description
No more wimpy watercolors! Kill it or cure it!
The end. It happens to the best of artists ... that frustrating point in a painting where you don't know how to finish it up, when to stop, or where to go from here. Too often this is the very same stage where half-finished paintings get stacked in the corner and written-off as "hopeless."
This unique, workshop-style book will help you recognize these works not as "bad" or "failed" paintings, merely unfinished. What's more, you'll learn how to take these beautiful starts--that pale painting hiding in your closet or the bombs stashed under your bed--and turn them into finished, gutsy, exhibition-quality pieces.
Follow Susan Webb Tregay's five steps to more successful watercolors, and learn how to finish your painting your way--with polish and pizzazz! You'll discover clean and easy solutions to your painting's problems, debunking once and for all that old myth that watercolor is unforgiving. Fifteen step-by-step demonstrations and many before-and-after examples illustrate the incredible difference these simple techniques can make in your art.
With Master Disaster, you can stop dreading "the end," and start anticipating the big finish!

Master of Disaster.......2007-07-05
I found the information in this book to be very helpful in figuring out ways to rescue a watercolor painting.
Master Disaster is a "must have!".......2007-05-06
Sue Webb Tregay's book, "Master Disaster", is one of the best art instruction books to come along in a very long time! As a professional artist for a number of years now, I was simply blown away by this book. I have never seen, in any other art book, such a widely diverse selection of artwork by ONE artist before! There is something for everyone here. Her ability to paint in many styles with widely divergent subject matter makes this book so unique. Couple that with her lively writing style, and "just do it" attitude, you'll want to race off to your studio to create your own masterpieces!
Simply put, a "must have!"
Excellent book!.......2007-04-03
Susan Webb Tregay presents logical, methodical, and imaginative approaches to "fixing" disastrous watercolor paintings that would benefit painters utilizing all water-media from the amateur to the more experienced. Her book, "Master Disaster" is loaded with great illustrations and explanations that are easy to understand. I particularly like her flexible approach to fixing a painting, and I'm now using many of her suggestions. Additionally, unlike other painting instructors, Tregay's approach enables students to retain their individual style while incorporating her ideas for mastery. Many other instruction books are practically "paint by number" in approach, where you use the author's compositions, color pallette, technique, etc. That approach isn't particularly effective because it produces painting clones of the author. Tregay's approach eliminates that possibility. I think this is a GREAT watermedia instruction book and highly recommend it to others.
Sensational!.......2007-04-02
This book is so easy to follow. It makes so much sense and to think it's the only one if it's kind that I've found. I love it and have used it already to "Master a Disaster".
Thanks Susan

This Book is an Art of Work.......2006-01-29
If you had to purchase only 1 book on watercolor this would be the one you would choose! It covers most of the technical aspects of paint, paper, brushes, etc., as do many other books, however, Frank Webb's work is different in important ways-most instructive to laymen and experienced alike. First, he paints with a broad strokewhich involves larger brushes and confidence. This book is unusual in the sense that Webb inspires the reader/artist to go beyond appearances and open-up to emotions and unusual color solutions. Well illustrated sections on preliminary drawings and washes, he leads the reader to begin work without too much fussing around. Not a formula painter, Webb has been around and explains the value of practice and experience. I have a dozen or two books on watercolor, but this is the most colorful and clearly explained of them all. Highly recommended!
Years of watercolor experience condensed in one book........1999-09-17
Webb is a natural teacher who is easy to follow from basic concepts to complex compositions. He has an innate ability to take painting beyond capturing likeness to how the subject is structured or feels. His book would be helped by more step-by-step sequences for technique or process analysis. Thanks Frank for a great reference book. Two thumbs up from Totino and Busby.
Quite simply the best all-round "how-to" watercolor book........1999-02-21
If you're looking for a general purpose, intelligent and informed book on watercolor, this is it. Webb -- formerly an illustrator/graphic artist -- has designed chapters on motivation, materials, setup, color and values, techniques, composition, design, all illustrated by examples painted by other top painters as well as himself. This is accompanied by pithy, appropriate one-liners quoted from philosophers, artists -- whoever his incredible memory finds the most apt. He encourages painters to experiment, take risks -- after learning the necessary first. As a watercolor instructor, and author of a book on outdoor landscape painting in watercolor, I recommend Frank Webb's two books, Nita Leland's book on color, and David Lewis' "Watercolour Painting Techniques." That's all you need for starters.

Enlightening.......2005-02-22
There are people who will wonder, after reading this book, if one can remove all of what Ranke-Heinemann calls "fairy tales" from Christianity and still have a practiceable religion left when you're finished. I would answer that yes, you can. And if you can't, you have a highly impoverished understanding about what the gospel is all about (which is true of most Christians, unfortunately).
Ranke-Heinemann, an eccentric but brilliant theologian, focuses her efforts on deconstructing the "fairy tales" of the Christian tradition, and does so with a good sense of humour. At first she comes across as very anti-faith, but this proves to be a false impression. It is only the false beliefs that need to be put away.
She makes no effort to "reconstruct" Christianity after she's finished "deconstructing" it, but this is not the point of her book. If you want to find a fresh approach to Jesus, I highly recommend Marcus Borg's "Jesus: A New Vision" and "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time."
An earlier reviewer suggested that someone who likes the writings of Jack Spong will enjoy this book as well. This is probably true, but the comparison is far more flattering for Spong than it is for Ranke-Heinemann. Spong's books are never as well-written or well-argued as this. Spong is a lightweight compared to Ranke-Heinemann.
One of a few books that will really make you think.......2004-10-17
This book was recomended to me after I read Eunichs for the Kingdom of Heaven (another real thought provoking book). This isn't a book where a pissed off person starts going off on religion and such with no logic or reason. She is thoughtful and careful, giving many good refrences for each topic. What she says makes sense. Even if you are caught up in the fairy tale and all, read this book. It can help make sense of your beliefs.
Wise and witty.......2003-05-23
In a well-researched and thoughtful way the author explores those aspects of Christian belief that are difficult to accept on face value (like the virgin birth, the tendency to blame the Jews and excuse the Romans for the crucifixion, very different Christmas stories, and miracle stories) and peels away layers of theological presentations and pious fantasies to give us a glimpse of original worship and spirituality. Her writing is provocative and at the same time it is funny. I laughed out loud as I read sections of the book. If you are open to questions about Christianity and the development of religious beliefs you might enjoy this book very much.
An exciting, challenging read........2001-12-31
If you are looking for an analysis of basic Christian beliefs that will most likely make you take a second look at all you were taught in church, than this is the book for you. The author is relentless in her deconstruction of so much of the Christian myth that has been misconstrued as history. She urges the reader to get beyond the literalization that has dominated Christian thought since the enlightenment and to see the Bible for what it is...a theology book. This is a highly readable and, dare I say, "fun" text to delve into and would make for great discussion in a study group. If you like the writings of liberal Episcopal theologian John Shelby Spong, you will enjoy this text immensely.

I haven't finished this book yet, but have found a lot of helpful insights into my behavior and the behavior of others and why we act the way we do at times, especially when we don't want to act the way we do. I recommend this for anyone who is trying to figure out some of the whys in their lives.

Provocative, Scholarly, and Occasionally Funny.......2006-09-28
Uta Ranke-Heinemann takes her considerable talents and applies them to a critical analysis of the gospels, revealing the incongruities, impossibilities, distortions, and mis-interpretations that have plagued the study of the historical Jesus. Much of the material she covers has been covered by others, but she has a unique perspective and often brings to light issues which previous researchers have overlooked or ignored. There is no one so well read on the life of the historical Jesus that they will not benefit from reading this book.
In addition, Ranke-Heinemann often displays a caustic wit that lightens up what is usually a weighty subject. Her humor is sometimes biting, but never offensive.
Which is not to say that the book has no faults. Ranke-Heinemann's "pick-and-choose" style of subject selection leaves us with gaps in the story and sometimes belabours a point to the extreme. She is far too accepting of some of the traditional ideas (e.g., Jesus is from Nazareth, his family was poor, etc.) and fails on occasions to distinguish between redacted material and original emphases (e.g., the section about Jesus' family being opposed to his activities). She uses no footnotes, so sometimes the text is more detailed than it might otherwise be. And she has no reference list, referring instead within the text to the docuemnts she quotes from extensively. These are relatively minor flaws.
This book should be read by anyone interested in the life of the historical Jesus. Even the most advanced scholar will benefit from Ranke-Heinemann's unusual probing techniques.
Don't be frightened.......2001-12-28
Don't be frightened by the facts and investigation found in the book titled "Putting Away Childish Things". The author takes some of the chipped foundations of Christianity and crumbles them into reality and logic. She turns fantasy and fable into truth and divinity. It will be blasphemous to some, shocking to many, and a clear revelation to others. Uta Ranke-Heinemann's goal appears to be clarity of thought when it comes to the message of God. You must read the book to find the message.
Check it out for yourself!.......2001-03-05
If the last two pages of this book were eliminated, it could be appropriately titled, "Debunking Christianity." Nonetheless, regardless of whether or not Uta Ranke-Heinemann is too extreme, I think her work has something very valuable to offer. It starts out with a few chapters just on Jesus' early years. The two gospel's birth narratives are their own worst enemies. The genealogies are a mess. In hindsight we find ignorant gospel writers. Later, in Christ's ministry, the prophet in a Hellenistic world was not too original when it came to being a thaumaturge. BUT, the theme of this book is giving up miraculous dogma. The miracles are of no relevence to a faith in the word of Jesus and God's love. His healing of the sick has no point unless we are too able to be healed by Him. Any honest intellectual could plainly see that Jesus was not originally made out to be a deity or "second person of the trinity." But wow, she takes it alot further than this in dropping the position of Christ as the Jewish Messiah and denying that he had to die for the sins of mankind. This seems unorthodox to most, but I do not think she is completely mistaken. (so go re-read Hosea 6:6 !) Other features to mention is the bogus personage of Judas Iscariot, who is really the personification of the Greeks' anti-Semitism. And also she takes us through a history of perdition ( Hell, Hades, Sheol, Gehenna, etc) taking it away from the ministry of Christ. Hellfire she believes, as do I, turns the gospel on its head and is at worst self defeating to the point of it all. Since her book is a huge stretch from orthodoxy and a transmogrification from the mass of Christian theology, she REALLY should have put more time into discussing her beliefs about the true meaning of Christ and why she believes certain sayings are authentic to Jesus while others are interpolations, besides her few neglible mentions in the book's body and a 2-page afterword. But verily, this is something that every Christian should consider to be a follower of Jesus' teaching and not a slave of church dogma. I hope that this book serves as a tool to erase fundamentalist hermeneutics and blind faith in bogus claims and to mollify others in a spiritual journey closer to bona fide religion and further away from wretched and morbid theology focused on the cross of human sacrifice.
Readable intro to liberal xtianity on Church doctrines.......2001-01-13
Uta Ranke-Heinemann is living proof that a person can be a theist *and* a freethinker. According to the back cover of the book, she "was the first woman in the world to hold a chair of Catholic theology (1970) and the first to lose it--because she questioned the virgin birth (1987)." In PUTTING AWAY CHILDISH THINGS, Ranke-Heinemann systematically refutes many traditional teachings of the Christian church, and she does so in a very readable way. Here is the table of contents:
Foreword
Introduction
1. Luke's Christmas Fairy Tale
2. Matthew's Fairy Tale of Jesus' Childhood
3. The Virgin Mother
4. The Angels
5. Jesus' Genealogies
6. Miraculous Fairy Tales
7. Good Friday
8. The Fairy Tale of Judas the Traitor
9. Easter
10. The Ascension
11. Pentecost
12. The Fairy Tale of Acts

Index
I agree with the first reviewer's assessment that liberal Christians and skeptics will love the book, while conservatives will hate it. I also agree that Ranke-Heinemann spent very little space actually discussing what "Jesus' real message actually was." But I would add that she spent even less space discussing WHY we should have faith in Jesus, once we have stripped away so many of the traditional church doctrines as "fairly tales" (p. 296)? To make an analogy, consider the life of the 'historical Abraham Lincoln.' Once we strip away the mythology, there are still good, authentic ethical principles left over and I can subjectively find meaning in my life by applying those principles. But I don't have faith 'in' Abraham Lincoln. And I certainly don't pray to him! It is unclear why we should view the Jesus of liberal Christianity any differently. But don't let this objection detract you from reading the book. On the contrary, I highly recommend it!
witty, eyeopening scholarship.......1999-02-17
Oh that our Prime Minister would read this! He wants a new preamble, including the words 'almighty god', to our constitution. I'd like to buy millions of copies of this book and distribute them to the christian fundamentalists of the world. Then they would have some idea of the surprising origin of their beliefs. It's a fabulous book to 'get started' on, if you're interested in the history of the whole thing. Am sure it would be very unsettling to most orthodox believers.
Book Description
With 1 Corinthians 13:11 as a starting point, this book establishes a standard process within a biblical context for helping the transition from youth to adulthood. It is especially designed to help parents and young men who are struggling and need to see and face the reality of growing up. It encourages young men to step up, put away childish things, take responsibility for their lives, and understand God's definition of manhood.

Book Description
Childish Things by Brian Naranjo is an intimate exploration of a boy's transition into manhood and a military future. Unique in that it takes place just before Operation Desert Storm began in 1991, Childish Things is actually based upon the true story of its author's coming of age in a time of war. Childish Things is an entertaining read that alternates between manic joy and profound melancholy-a read for anyone who believes in the power of a person to overcome the past and embrace an unknown future.
Customer Reviews:
What goes through the mind of every new recruit..........2006-12-01
Childish Things by Brian Naranjo portrays the thoughts and memories of what goes through every kid's head that is about to depart the civilian world and enter the demanding duties of the military. While reading this book all I could think about was how well I could relate to the main character, Kevin, and what exactly he was going through in his hotel. And even to Eugene, Kevin's cousin and best friend, and the all the crazy plots he thought of.
If you enjoy books that make you laugh, gasp, and even make you tear up, I highly suggest this book to you. It is one of those books that you pick up, and never put down. And once you finish it you want to read it again.
The best first novel I've ever read.......2006-11-19
Simply put, I think this is the best first novel I've ever read.
I don't know just how autobiographical the book is, but it certainly matches what I and a lot of men went through at one time in our young lives. Even though Mr. Naranjo is young enough to be my kid, I had the same feelings, the same thoughts, the same fears.
It's a coming of age story. Specifically it's the story of a young man who is leaving home for essentially the first time and going off to Navy.
As I've grown older I recognize just how well the military understands young men. Of course they've been working on the problem since the Greeks invented the phalanx a couple of thousand years ago.
This story is not about military training, it's about young men. The author understands them as well as does the military, and he writes with clarity and understanding that the military does not.
Highly recommended.
Wonderful book.......2006-10-10
I absolutely loved the book. I couldn't stop reading it. I loved the story, it made me feel like I was a kid again along with the characters in all their adventures. I highly recommend this book.
Wonderful .......2006-10-05
Once I got home with the book I couldn't put it down. Although it's supposed to be fiction, the author's emotions come through loud and clear and I believe he is writing from the heart. The book is so descriptive of young boys lives and the deep bond that exist between them. Tremendous effort for a first time author. Highly recommend the book to everyone.
Page Turner.......2006-10-04
What a great book.! This book is a real page turner. You will not want to put it down once you begin reading it. I could actually see with my minds eye, all of fun, trouble, and pranks they were doing. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to laugh or cry tears of happiness. Thank you Brian, for sharing your cousin's life events with us.
God Bless you as you continue your career in the U.S. Navy.

Book Description
Taking the position that lost and abandoned toys retain repressed memories of prepubescent trauma and the deep-seated guilt associated with the playing of forbidden games, the photographic team of Davis & Davis have created staged images of mini-psychodramas using forlorn toys to portray the conflicted children who left them behind. In scenes such as a little boy stuck atop a teeter-totter and a baby falling out of a window while its father rushes to try and catch it, they explore the darker side of humanity, deflate the cherished myth of innocence, and point out that not even children are untainted and sinless.

Avid Art Collectors Love This Book!.......2004-11-18
We first saw the photos of "Davis and Davis" after reading a glowing L.A. Times review of their show, "Childish Things" at the Watts Art Center.
The Davises arrange found and/or discarded toys into unsettling dioramas that aren't like any photos we've seen before.
The photos seem at first to be about childhood. My interpretation after studying them, however, is that they are really about trying to make sense of our only partially remembered childhood experiences. The prints suggest that our poor understanding of our memories results in our inability to learn fully from them.
We also love this book for the candy-solor-saturated photos themselves with their witty, slightly macabre humor.

A perfect complement to Virginia Woolf's 'The Waves'. It's so rare that an author can so convincingly enter the world of children and leave us convinced of their world's complexity. The writing is poetic in this beautiful work.

Set in an all-white Transvaal boarding school in apartheid South Africa, Childish Things recalls the antiquated fantasy lived by most Dutch Afrikaners in the 1970s. Mart and Dalena are roommates on the verge of womanhood. Simon, Mart's brother, and Pierre are friends with vastly different political beliefs that become apparent as they prepare for military service at the border of South-West Africa and Angola. As the illusions of the Afrikaner way of life begin to disintegrate, the four struggle with the prospects of imminent adulthood, while coming to grips with the impending upheaval of their blissfully ignorant existence.
