5 out of 5 stars Insight into Thinking Process of a Two-Time Nobel Prize Winner.......2006-09-29

Dr. Linus Pauling, an American scientist and the world's only winner of two unshared Nobel Prizes, talks with Daisaku Ikeda, the Japanese leader of the world's largest lay Buddhist organization about disarmament, international understanding, and the pace of world peace. This is a study of the thinking process of Pauling, who was 91 at the time of the talks, and lively, sharp and energetic.

An East meets West dialogue that is indexed, a rare feature for such books and extremely helpful to biographers of both famous men.

5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking.......2000-07-26

I found this book thought-provoking, interesting and inspiring.

1 out of 5 stars ineffectual solutions and emasculate contributions.......2000-06-05

"Lifelong Quest for Peace" is a compellation of dialogues between Nobel Laureate and peace activist Linus Pauling and Soka Gakkai International president Daisaku Ikeda which attempts to proffer insights and attainable solutions to the world's myriad problems. I found Dr. Pauling's contributions to the discussion to be salient and constructive as opposed to Mr. Ikeda, who gives the impression of an evangelical philosopher who has learned to conceal vacuity with pretentious verbage.

Disappointingly, the parameters of discussion in "Lifelong Quest for Peace" are so limited that the indubitable reasons behind global conflicts since World War II are hardly touched upon at all. The reasons being that the whenever the Third World has attempted to break out of its service role (the provision of resources, cheap labour, markets, opportunities for investment and the export of pollution) it has been forcibly put back "into its place" by those countries shouldered with the responsibility of protecting the First World's interests. This truism, which is obstensibly evaded in "Lifelong Quest for Peace" is most adeptly covered in Noam Chomsky's "World Orders, Old and New."

The evasion of the above historical and systemic truism, along with Mr. Ikeda's emasculate contribution, are some of the reasons why, for this reader at least, "Lifelong Quest for Peace" is ineffectual in proffering substantial solutions to the problems it attempts to provide answers to.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2000-05-29

I read this book after viewing the Soka Gakkai-sponsored Linus Pauling exhibit (see paulingexhibit.org). This book is the long-awaited dialogue between two-time Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Linus Pauling and Soka Gakkai International President Daisaku Ikeda, carried out over three years, covering many interesting subjects. Admirers of Dr. Pauling, especially those with an interest in Buddhism, will be delighted.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Minds.......2000-05-05

America's preeminent scientist and peace activist Linus Pauling (1901-94) and Daisaku Ikeda have worked for decades in the cause of disarmament, international understanding, and lasting peace. Both are absolute pacifists. A timely publication at a critical juncture in world affairs, this book is the product of their discussions held at Soka University, Los Angeles, in 1987. While the dialogue spells out their efforts and prescriptions for dealing with the current peace issues, it also relates Pauling's recollections of his childhood, his development as a scientist, and many episodes about his life and the people he has known--Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer among them. This volume gives a broad and personal glimpse of Pauling, recipient of two unshared Nobel Prizes (1954 for chemistry and 1962 for peace).

Dr. Pauling first met Mr. Ikeda in Los Angeles in 1987, then again in 1990 and twice in 1993, before his death in 1994. His son, Linus Pauling, Jr., later recollected his father's pride in their joint publication, as follows: "My father met President Ikeda in his later days and mentioned him to me on many occasions, .........."

A Lifelong Quest for Peace, gives the reader an opportunity to become acquainted with Dr. Pauling, who was always active and vocal in his advocacy of responsible and humane progress in science and a superb role model for today's young people, on whose shoulders the problems of the twenty-first century rest

Book Description

Combustion is an old technology, which at present provides about 90% of our worldwide energy support. Combustion research in the past used fluid mechanics with global heat release by chemical reactions described with thermodynamics, assuming infinitely fast reactions. This approach was useful for stationary combustion processes, but it is not sufficient for transient processes like ignition and quenching or for pollutant formation. Yet pollutant formation during combustion of fossil fuels is a central topic and will continue to be so in the future. This book provides a detailed and rigorous treatment of the coupling of chemical reactions and fluid flow. Also, combustion-specific topics of chemistry and fluid mechanics are considered and tools described for the simulation of combustion processes.

The actual fourth edition presents a completely restructured book: Mathematical Formulae and derivations as well as the space-consuming reaction mechanisms have been replaced from the text to appendix. A new chapter discusses the impact of combustion processes on the earth’s atmosphere, the chapter on auto-ignition is extended to combustion in Otto- and Diesel-engines, and the chapters on heterogeneous combustion and on soot formation appear heavily revised.

4 out of 5 stars Useful book.......2007-08-17

This book is not a complete guide but is a good self-learning help.
It can be also used as a quick reference.
A good starting point for combustion studies. Then other books are required if complete treatment is required.
Small but nice part of useful mathematics in appendix. Not a rigorous treatment but quick explanation of some topics related to CFD.

4 out of 5 stars Combustion modeling review.......2000-04-08

This is a very good book. It format is very succictinct and as such spares no space for unecessary content. This give the narrative a somewhat terse style. It must be remembered that the science of combustion wrestles with some formidable concepts; such as turbulent flow, reduced reaction mechanisms for complex chemical reactions, fluid flow and heat transfer. This is not a book for those who are easily frightened by close typed differential equations. This book however, is an excellent introduction to the science of combustion, and contains a detailed and upto date biblography, pointing the interested reader in the right direction. It also contains one of the most complete tables of kinetic data for combustion reactions, I have seen in published literature. My one regret is that there is no companion volume of solved examples that could be used by an unassisted, but interested student. Read in conjunction with Smith/Missen, computation of chemical equilibrium, and Anderson's excellent introduction to Computational fluid dynamics, and the world of this facinating and most important field opens up.

                Book Description

This introduction to computational fluid dynamics serves as a unique advanced-undergraduate text that brings together Cebeci's lifelong experience as a teacher at the University of California and a senior scientist for Boeing Company. Conservation equations for compressible and incompressible flows are the prime theme. The text concentrates on finite difference and finite volume methods and mostly treats two-dimensional flows, while it also keeps key arguments general enough to apply to the three-dimensional case as well. It also provides methods for solving model parabolic, elliptic and hyperbolic equations, and two chapters address boundary-layer equations. The treatment of the transition from laminar to turbulent flow makes use of the e n method. Further topics are grid generation methods and extensive discussions of the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations. The book is accompanied by a CD including computer programs that have been tested in many practical applications in industrial fluid mechanics engineering.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but beware..........2007-03-03

This is a well written book. The only problem I have with it is that it has a misleading title: Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers: From Panel to Navier-Stokes Methods WITH COMPUTER PROGRAMS. While the book does come with SOME computer programs (ie, FORTRAN source), there are many chapters that don't contain the source code with the included CD. This is pretty bad, especially if you'd like to write your own code. At first I thought that the publisher somehow forgot to write some of the files to the CD, so I contacted one the authors asking if he could send me some of the missing source files. It turns out that I would have to pay an extra $90 to have access to the remaining source code! No way, I'm not doing it (I'm a poor student). This was definitely a frustrating. With $50 you can get yourself a copy of the Fluent student version to validate you're own code!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good for applied CFD with engineering approach. Clear to beginners also.......2006-06-03

I am an aerospace engineer but have been working in experimental research for the last year when my interest in CFD came along.

This book was my first book ever bought in CFD; I went through many others from the library, but I bought this one because of its practical, and still precise and in-depth analysis of numerical methods applied to fluid dynamics.

It also dedicate a chapter to the Hess-Smith panel method applied to 2D aerodynamic bodies and it clearely gives enough details and practical steps to develop and write your own panel method code.

Every chapter has excercices at the end, but mostly, the author accompanies the expemples with codes written in fortran and reported in the CD.

The only thing that sometimes might be noticed (very lightly), are some typos or missing explanations on how he changed the notation.

A book to have for a beginner who is willing to intensevly learn CFD and computation.

                  Book Description

The discontinuous finite element method (also known as the discontinuous Galerkin method) embodies the advantages of both finite element and finite difference methods. It can be used in convection-dominant applications while maintaining geometric flexibility and higher local approximations throught the use of higher-order elements. Element-by element connection propagates the effect of boundary conditions and the local formulation obviates the need for global matrix assembly. All of this adds up to a method which is not unduly memory-intensive and uniquely useful for working with computational dynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow calculations. Discontinuous Finite Elements in Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer offers its readers a systematic and practical introduction to the discontinuous finite element method. It moves from a brief review of the fundamental laws and equations governing thermal and fluid systems, through a discussion of different approaches to the formulation of discontinuous finite element solutions for boundary and initial value problems, to their applicaton in a variety of thermal-system and fluid-related problems, including: heat conduction problems; convection-dominant problems; compressible and incompressible flows; external radiation problems; internal radiation and radiative transfer; free- and moving-boundary problems; micro- and nanoscale heat transfer and fluid flow; thermal fluid flow under the influence of applied magnetic fields. Mesh generation and adaptivity, parellelization algorithms and a priori and a posteriori error analysis are also introduced and explained, rounding out a comprehensive review of the subject. Each chapter features worked examples and exercises illustrating situations ranging from simple benchmarks to practical engineering questions. This textbook is written to form the foundations of senior undergraduate and graduate learning and also provides scientists, applied mathematicians and research engineers with a thorough treatment of basic concepts, specific techniques and methods for the use of discontinuous Galerkin methods in computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer applications.

                    Book Description

This book is concerned with mathematical and numerical methods for compressible flow. It aims to provide the reader with a sufficiently detailed and extensive, mathematically precise, but comprehensible guide, through a wide spectrum of mathematical and computational methods used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the numerical simulation of compressible flow. Up-to-date techniques applied in the numerical solution of inviscid as well as viscous compressible flow on unstructured meshes are explained, thus allowing the simulation of complex three-dimensional technically relevant problems. Among some of the methods addressed are finite volume methods using approximate Riemann solvers, finite element techniques, such as the streamline diffusion and the discontinuous Galerkin methods, and combined finite volume - finite element schemes. The book gives a complex insight into the numerics of compressible flow, covering the development of numerical schemes and their theoretical mathematical analysis, their verification on test problems and use in solving practical engineering problems. The book will be helpful to specialists coming into contact with CFD - pure and applied mathematicians, aerodynamists, engineers, physicists and natural scientists. It will also be suitable for advanced undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of mathematics and technical sciences.

                          Book Description

One day George Arthur Rose, hack writer and minor priest, discovers that he has been picked to be Pope. He is hardly surprised and not in the least daunted. "The previous English pontiff was Hadrian the Fourth," he declares. "The present English pontiff is Hadrian the Seventh. It pleases Us; and so, by Our own impulse, We command."Hadrian is conceived in the image of his creator, Fr. Rolfe, whose aristocratic pretensions (he called himself Baron Corvo), religious obsession, and anarchic and self-aggrandizing sensibility have made him known as one of the great English eccentrics. Fr. Rolfe endured a lifetime of indignities and disappointments. However, in the hilarious and touching pages of this, his finest novel, he triumphs.

                          5 out of 5 stars Different.......2007-07-30

I read this a long time ago and it left a very distinct and longlasting aftertaste. In my childhood, I met more than a few Catholics caught up with the elaborate outer crust, rituals and language of this religion, the religion of my childhood. Hadrian the seventh is more extreme in this way than all of those characters put together. You do not have to be a Catholic to enjoy his very original use of the English language. It is a classic. Poverty seems to have chased Frederick Rolfe even after death. This book is out of print! I read this book during the same period while I was at university that I read the Autobiography of Aleister Crowley, Milarepa by Evans-Wentz and Borges and shortly after that Marques, just before he won the Nobel Prize. I promise you young folks that reading these crazy books would take you on more thrilling trips than drugs, fast cars and mindless sex. It is all in the mind, is it not?

                          3 out of 5 stars Pontifex Maximus?.......2006-11-04

Yes, well, um, quite...This eccentric, dainty, precieuse story really has not much to do with Roman Catholicism or the Papacy...It has almost everything to do with its eccentric, dainty, precieuse author, who certainly was an odd fish--It is his confession, vindication and divine wish-fulfillment all in one. Or was he really all that odd? His is the story of the eminently talented, gifted, sensitive soul left to drift in the world, his talents unappreciated by the vulgar herd, left with only his pride as consolation. He very much resembles Baudelaire's description of the poet whose "great wings prevent him from walking"--And this book encompasses his vision of what he would do could he but fly. But it must be said that this literary flight is, simply put, more odd and curious than grand or tragic or majestic or poetic. It is, like its author, idiosyncratic to the core.

Reading this book, for me, was like rummaging in a linguistic attic, chancing upon a forgotten turn of English or Ancient Greek and smiling wistfully before putting it aside again. Ultimately, this book is, like its author, a curiosity whose "caviare" as D.H. Lawrence puts it on the back cover, can and will be appreciated only by the few with a taste for the peculiar.

5 out of 5 stars To the Divine Friend, Much Desired.......2005-04-21

...so Rolfe dedicated one of his books - ideal reader, confere et semblable. Ah well, Caligula - not an entirely off the wall association - wanted the moon.

Who reads books like this today - rhetoric, of course - the thing is already out of print (doubly poignant as Alexander Theroux... and I will go on about him elsewhere, wrote the singular introduction)?

The book will not outshine (in the sense of shininess) Dan Brown, but it is full of, at this writing, topical stuff of interest: papal conclaves, Vatican ritual and skullduggery (a redundancy?) - but this is not dry historical terrain. Like the Vatican itself this is a distinctly autonomous and armed entity within and often at odds with a sovereign state (here I mean, the singular "Baron Corvo" versus the world and everyone in it); it is a solipsist manifesto, a gorgeously strange decadent piece - concerned with aura, décor, style and personality and has nary a trace of agape or religion in it.

Its greatest quality is that its influence is felt in Alexander Theroux's Darconville's Cat.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like this in all English Literature.......2004-11-14

It is gratifying to see that Fr. Rolfe, a/k/a Baron Corvo is still the cause of violent polemicism in modern readers. There truly was no one like him, not even Joyce, for love of language.

Were he not so self-focused he might have written a corpus of much more sustainable themes; and yet his entire oeuvre is shaped and iterated by his own disappointments and failures (there were so many: he was so tired). In this book, he takes revenge on the world, and triumphs--as pope! What a wonderful conceit. It should be read slowly. It is truly to be savored.

                          4 out of 5 stars A Twist on Catholicism.......2003-07-27

I thought the novel was splendid. It's about a "nobody" who became pope - not a new concept by any means - with some obscure details on, and innovative reforms of the catholic church.

I found the characters to be believable, underscoring my general feeling about the hierarchical structure of, and the personalities residing within the church.

Although it's a bit of a hard read in terms of its language usage, I enjoyed it and have recommended it to other people.
