Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves a chance..........2003-06-07

I am a very passionate designer and have been for a long time. Owning a large collection of design books helps me succeed. Karim Rashid's book is in fact very fascinating, his ideas are exceptionally motivating and attention-grabbing. Although there are many designers out there in the word, Rashid's designs are one of those worthy of note, this book is exceedingly superior as it provides glimpses of sketches by Rashid himself as well as many pleasant photographs.

This is definitely worth buying!

1 out of 5 stars flub and dribble.......2002-12-02

Not only should you not buy this book you shouldnt even open it.Karim Rashid deserves great credit for his ability to fool corporations and college freshmen into buying into his vision of a hot pink world but as far as design goes, he is a joke, his "look" was over in 1995 six months after it started. Anyone with a 3d modeling program on there home computer could produce this work. Take a shape, close your eyes, punch some keys on your computer, color it purple, call it a vase, lamp, chair, whatever and voila the Karim Rashid formula. The entire book almost is made not of photos but of computer generated images, this stuff doesnt even exist(thank God). He needs to go back to Canada or Egypt, repurchase the 40,000 records he supposidly "threw in the trash" and pick up his gig as the DJ he really is and leave the designing to the designers. Shame on the ignorant people out there who cant see the Emperor is naked.

1 out of 5 stars Does he really mean what he said?.......2002-06-11

Saw this book at MoMA. This guy is all about marketing himself. There are probably hundreds, if not thousands of better designers who should get the recognition he is getting. He is going to change the world by making affordable objects, such as an i-Book look-a-like platic carrying case ( will anyone be carrying ths arround? ) for this book to sell it at $100. If you are really interested in design, do a little browsing or research, and you'll find there're tons of better, and even prettier books. And those are cheaper, too.

1 out of 5 stars nurbsturbation.......2002-05-30

hmmm,
most of the work in this book is non-sensical proposals for big name companies, like Rashid wants to be a high flying designer, but can't quite design the mass-appeal product. Designing a blobject MD player for Sony without buttons is all well and good in 3D studio Max, but what happens when it comes to usability testing and manufacture...

I don't like his work, it looks like a university product design portfolio, the text is unreadable at odd angles, and he treats the reader with patronising pseudo-sociological [person].

5 out of 5 stars a great book.......2002-05-12

i bought this book since i had heard a lot about karim rashid but didnt really know any of his work. after getting this book i realized i had seen a lot of his work byut hadnt realized it was desgined by him.
the book is very good, nice colors, clean layout, and great designs.

Book Description

Using picture after picture (and handwritten instructions, for a more intimate feel), Claudia Nice teaches artists how to use dots, fine lines, brush strokes, black & white and color-a mixture of mediums and techniques to create the gleaming transparency of glass, rolling surf and ocean waves, the warmth of brick and adobe, rainbows that glimmer, sunrises and sunsets that glow, dramatic wood grain, smoothed driftwood, foliage of distant trees, intricate leaf textures, the woven texture of basketry, lifelike animal hair and dozens of other textures!

Artists will learn how to use such diverse materials as technical pens, paint brushes, colored inks and liquid acrylics, along with ways to alter and combine ink and watercolor for exciting texturing effects.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2007-03-07

I like alot of the techniques in the book. Basically that would be why I use the book. Sometimes I go back to the book to just refresh my memory. I have a few books I refer to, and it is nice to have a variety so that I can always come up with something new and creative in my own art.

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching techniques.......2006-10-18

If you really want to learn how to use pen & ink along with watercolor than this is the book you need. She shows great detail and helps the artist, either beginner or advanced, how to improve on their paintings.

5 out of 5 stars Nice, but material is duplicated in another of her books..........2004-06-07

This is an excellent book... IF you don't already own "Painting with Watercolor, Pen and Ink" by Claudia Nice. The material in this book is entirely duplicated in the "Painting with..." except for the last chaper called "Fur and Feathers". Please do not buy this book if you already own a copy of "Painting with Watercolor, Pen and Ink". I did and was disappointed that there was only one chapter of new material in this book.

Now, if you own the other book "Painting Nature in Pen & Ink with Watercolor" then I highly recommend this book as it has subject matter that was not covered in the "Painting Nature..." book.

If you don't own any of her books, then buy the "Painting with Watercolor Pen and Ink" ISBN 158180265X because it completely combines the material in both "Creating Textures..." and "Painting Nature..." books.

5 out of 5 stars New title for this excellent book........2004-05-29

I recently checked this book out from the library and found it to be an excellent resource for me, a student new to these media. I enjoyed the book and decided to purchase it. Amazon lists the book as out of print. Indeed this title is out of print. However, don't despair. This book has been re-released under the new title "Painting with Watercolor, Pen and Ink."

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected or wanted.......2004-02-27

A better title would have been, "Creating Textures in Pen & Ink, Enhanced with Watercolor." 75% of each texture comes down to "make a detailed ink drawing". The other 25% is enhancing that ink drawing with watercolor. The pen & ink predominates everywhere. If this is the style of drawing you desire (e.g., detailed drawings where pen&ink predominates), then you will probably give this book 4 to 5 stars. I was looking for watercolor texture techniques and was disapointed.

With that said, the drawings are very well executed and the instruction quality moderate. The author relies too heavily on step-by-step examples as a teaching tool. The addition of color greatly enhances the pen & ink drawings, with spectacular results.

Anyone willing to learn can celebrate the wonder of nature with Claudia Nice's techniques for combining pen and ink with watercolor. Offering clear, step-by-step instruction for painting a range of subjects, she focuses on the little details first, from soil and leaves to wildflowers and birds. As artists are guided piece-by-piece through the wonders of different panoramic settings, they will learn to combine these elements into full-scale projects--quiet forest scenes, coral reefs teeming with color, prairies, deserts, ponds and mountains--all alive with the beauty and joy of nature.

1 out of 5 stars Yuk!.......2003-01-01

I really don't see why anyone would buy this. I'm a real art fanatic, and I love Ms. Nice very much. Her past books fill one's pleasure and contentment. I recommend Creating Textures in Pen and Ink with Watercolor (by her) rather than this.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Book by Ms. Nice.......2000-04-23

I bought this book based on the strength of Ms. Nice's previous book Creating Textures in Pen & Ink with Watercolor. I was equally pleased and delighted with this one as much as with her previous work.

It first starts out with some very basic pen & ink strokes and techniques along with some watercolor texturing techniques (such as using crumpled plastic wrap which gives a surprisingly snow crystal-like texture).

The next chapters move quickly on to using these techniques as applied to creating wildlife paintings and/or scenic landscapes. For example, in one chapter she starts out showing step by step details of a bird wildlife painting. One of the interesting things is that the bird pen & ink was done in sepia ink rather than the more typical black. The next page showed a step by step of the ferns in the painting along with moss and wood. The last page in the chapter showed all of these things pulled together into the final painting. Each painting gets the same "how-to" treatment. The result is that someone could easily duplicate each of the paintings in the book.

There are also a wealth of mini-demonstrations such as leaves, frogs, birds, seashells, fish, starfish, flowers, grass, trees, etc. All of them most likely pulled from actual full paintings she has done but probably not included due to space and page-length considerations. Each one of the mini-pictures provides another step by step build-up so you can practice first without neccessarily committing to a big project. In short, it just looks like fun.

One interesting side note: comic book artists have long used this technique of watercolor with pen & ink. I am a big fan of comics - DC's Vertigo line and some Image comics in particular feature breathtaking illustrations with pen & ink and watercolor. Any fine artist should do him/herself a favor and see how beautiful and "grown-up" some of these comics have really become. They routinely feature beautiful art for its own sake and the stories are geared toward an adult market.

What is really refreshing is that Ms. Nice finally shows how beautiful these techniques are when applied to the realm of nature art. I don't really see how anyone could be disappointed with this book. You're bound to learn something new to try with your own paintings. I certainly did. :)

                    Book Description

Now widely recognized as one of the early twentieth century's most extraordinary photographers, Tina Modotti was remembered until recently more for her relationship to Edward Weston than for her own strong, sensuous work. This comprehensively produced biography, now published for the first time in paperback, captures in over 100 striking photographs and a sympathetic, meticulously researched text the fullness of a life wholly committed to political, personal, and artistic freedom. From her early days in Hollywood as a silent film actress, through the creative, fruitful years in Mexico with Weston and her political exile in 1930s Europe, to her sudden death in 1942, Tina Modotti's courage, clear vision, and dramatic flair made her one of the most internationally controversial and widely admired artistic figures of her day. Perceptive and authoritative, Tina Modotti lifts the veil on a fragile life of iron.

5 out of 5 stars A Revised and Beautiful View of Tina Modotti's Photography.......2001-07-02

Review Summary: Tina Modotti achieved a remarkable level of accomplishment in a photographic career that spanned merely 7 years and 250 images. Her work captures many of the best elements of the compositional skills of Edward Weston, her mentor and lover, while adding a heart-felt attraction for people that Mr. Weston's work lacked. These images of portraits, still lifes, and architecture from her years in Mexico are much more appealing to me than Mr. Weston's are from the same period. The extensive biographical essay also corrects many misconceptions about Ms. Modotti's life.

Reader Warning: This book contains some partial female nudity, mostly of women nursing their babies.

Review: "Tina Modotti is the best-known unknown photographer of the twentieth century . . . ." Her work exhibits "extraordinary formal clarity coupled with incisive social content." Her style obviously was influenced by Edward Weston, due to their long association and personal closeness. Other influences include the Movimento Estridentista (the Mexican reaction to Futurism), New Vision, and the German Arbeiter-Fotograf movement. The vision is uniquely hers.

My assumption is that you have never seen her work. I certainly never had. Ms. Modotti's images are a nice surprise. Often books that make these kinds of claims about their subject don't have the content to support them. This one does live up to its bold premise about her photography. Of her own work, Ms. Modotti observed that her purpose was "to produce not art but honest photographs." All of her images are contact prints, and her technique shows the minimum of trying to provide eye candy. What they do show is a wonderful eye for the interesting and heart-warming. You will have a much more emotional reaction to these images than to the photographs of many outstanding photographers, a group in which Ms. Modotti belongs.

Relatively unschooled in a formal sense, she was an emotionally-based Communist. Some may not appreciate the political content of some of her images, such as the various ways of portraying the hammer and sickle symbol of the Soviet Union. I thought that these photographs were among the least interesting of her works.

Her life history was an interesting surprise to me. Coming from a poor family in Italy, she appears to have pulled herself up by the bootstraps as a seamstress. First working in garment factories, she probably became a costume seamstress and from there launched her performing career as an actress and model. Often portrayed as the lover and friend of various famous men, she probably viewed them as an appendage to her. History has been successfully revised in the excellent biographical sketch in this book.

My favorite images in the book include:

Edward Weston, 1924; Open Doors, c. 1925; Staircase, c. 1924-26; Convent of Tepotzotlan (Stairs Through Arches), 1924; Geranium, c. 1924-25; Easter Lily and Bud, c. 1925; Interior of Church, 1924; Elisa Kneeling, 1924; Carelton Beals, 1924; Portrait of a Woman, c. 1926-29; Federico Marin, 1926; Ione Robinson, 1929; Two Children or Boys from Colonia del la Bolsa, c. 1927-28; Hands Resting on Tool, 1927; Woman with Flag, 1928; Techuantepec Type (Woman Smiling), c. 1929; and Young Pioneers, 1930.

The images for the first two or three years could easily have been done by Edward Weston, but show a connection to daily living that his more ethereal works do not display. After that, the works definitely separate in content, style, and focus. If you like Mr. Weston's work, you may enjoy comparing his Mexican images with hers.

After producing all but a few of these photographs, Ms. Modotti left Mexico for Russia and eventually played an important role in the Spanish Civil War in evacuating children and as a nurse. All of those parts of her life are recounted in the book's biographical essay.

After you enjoy these uplifting views of the nobility of people, nature, and of human efforts, I suggest that you think about what you convey about these subjects to your children or grandchildren. Do they know what your views are and why you hold them? If not, you might consider taking photographs and writing notes to go with them to help share your vision of the world. Whether they agree or not, you will enrich them in important ways.

Seek out the best in every situation!

5 out of 5 stars The Vision of Passion.......2000-03-27

As a famous photographer once stated, photography is aligning the mind, the heart and sight. Scrolling through Modotti's photographs, one feels that she goes beyond by reflecting her passion in her work. This book is an invaluable source portraying Mexican communist art with a flavour of Tina's very special passion.
