This book presents the lectures which were given during the Comett II Course on Advanced Separation Technology for Industrial Waste Minimization: Environmental and Analytical Aspects. Due to the interest in new environmental solutions, the European Community organises educational and training activities of which the Comett Course is an example. The development of efficient membrane separation techniques has enlarged their field of application in all sectors of industry. Today these membrane technologies are the most advanced and innovative molecular separation units able to contribute to the rationalisation of industrial production, minimizing environmental impacts by realizing pollution controlled cycles.
Throughout the book, emphasis is given to the potentiality of membrane operations in wastewater management. Real case studies are described as well as practical solutions. The following topics are covered: existing membrane processes and new perspectives; industrial development of membrane modules; applications to the pulp and paper industry, textile industry, metal-finishing, tanneries, agro-food and food industries; biotechnological applications; purification of landfill leachates; and advances in analytical techniques.
The book is for engineers, researchers, technical managers and graduate students.
Book Description
This book is an abridged version of the two volumes "Convex Analysis and Minimization Algorithms I and II" (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften Vol. 305 and 306), which presented an introduction to the basic concepts in convex analysis and a study of convex minimization problems. The "backbone" of both volumes was extracted, some material deleted that was deemed too advanced for an introduction, or too closely related to numerical algorithms. Some exercises were included and finally the index has been considerably enriched.
The main motivation of the authors was to "light the entrance" of the monument Convex Analysis. This book is not a reference book to be kept on the shelf by experts who already know the building and can find their way through it; it is far more a book for the purpose of learning and teaching.

Recently there has been intense research activity on the subject of wavelet/subband theory and application. This book is intended to serve as a text for first and second year courses in single variable complex analysis. The material that is appropriate for more advanced study is developed from elementary material. The concepts are illustrated with large numbers of examples, many of which involve problems students encounter in other courses. For example, students who have taken an introductory physics course will have encountered analysis of simple AC circuits. This text revisits such analysis using complex numbers. Cauchy's residue theorem is used to evaluate many types of definite integrals that students are introduced to in the beginning calculus sequence. Methods of conformal mapping are used to solve problems in electrostatics. The book contains material that is not considered in other popular complex analysis texts. For example, one chapter is devoted to an analysis of multivalued functions, with applications to the evaluation of certain types of integrals. Another chapter deals with the singularity structure of functions that are defined by integrals which cannot be evaluated in terms of elementary functions. A third chapter develops dispersion relations, which are mathematical tools for determining a complete function from a knowledge of just the real part, or just the imaginary part of the function.

The text takes you from simple complex number manipulation all the way to contour integration. Cohen draws in examples from various sciences and engineering, to illustrate the myriad usages of complex analysis.
If you are a student majoring in the physical sciences, engineering or, of course, maths, this text can be valuable in teaching the key ideas. Like residues, Laurant series, index numbers and the Residue Theorem. While some of you might at first wonder at the relevance of this to anything useful, the book's examples should disabuse you. Culminating in being able to evaluate a contour integral by finding the enclosed singularities. Elegant and beautiful. Hopefully, you will agree by the time you've gone through the book.

Gilbert White lived the quietest life, but he succeeded in gaining the attention of all the prominent naturalists of the 18th century. His only book was the result of years of observations of his gardens and surrounding countryside of southern England. Written in the form of letters to interested fellow naturalists, White comments on birds, geology, insects, and even a visit to a North American moose that has been imported by a neighbor. As a writer, Gilbert White is astute in combining his observations with a charming delight in everything he sees that makes the reader want to follow him wherever he goes.
