    Book Description

The ways in which bacteria can manipulate reproduction of their invertebrate hosts for their own benefit is attracting increasing attention among scientists. It has been discovered that certain bacteria can determine the likelihood of their fruit fly hosts finding a partner to mate with, and that bacteria infecting woodlice can even cause changes in woodlice offspring. Written by leading experts, this is a timely and readable exploration of a new, exciting, and rapidly expanding area of science.

                              Book Description

“This is a very important book. It is an essential text for any graduate program in applied industrial and organizational psychology. The First Edition is the best text on the market today, and the Second Edition is a huge improvement. Nice work!”

                              – Bill Attenweiler, Northern Kentucky University

Thoroughly updated and revised, this Second Edition is the only book currently on the market to present the most important and commonly used methods in human resource management in such detail. The authors clearly outline how organizations can create programs to improve hiring and training, make jobs safer, provide a satisfying work environment, and help employees to work smarter. Throughout, they provide practical tips on how to conduct a job analysis, often offering anecdotes from their own experiences.

                              New to the Second Edition:

                              Companion Website!

A companion website, http://jobandworkanalysis.com, offers instructors and students supplemental materials such as course syllabi, examples of data collected as part of a job analysis, task inventory data, the opportunity to practice data analysis, and much more!

                              2 out of 5 stars The Morgesons..........2005-11-07

Terribly, terribly, terribly boring. I do not wish this torment on my worst enemy. Do not read it. There is not even a summary online, which means, nobody could endure the agony to finish this damn book.

4 out of 5 stars Weird but good.......2001-02-14

The Morgesons is a magnificently strange book that takes the conventions of the 19th-century coming-of-age novel & turns them inside out. It comes so close to being a deliciously cosy, quasi-gothic, read that you find yourself wondering whether you're imagining the peculiarities--& perhaps they are only the natural consequences of transplanting this sort of novel into an American setting, where instead of sheepfolds & Anglican churchiness, barren Cape Cod coastline and cold Calvinism are the order of the day. Obsession with inheritance & the family line & that terrible 19th century question: what should a woman do? runs through the book, whose coldness occasionally gives way to flaring episodes of violence and passion.

                                    Description:
We sought to examine the concept of authentic leadership and discuss the influences of authenticity and authentic leadership on leader and follower eudaemonic well-being, as well as examine the processes through which these influences are realized. This was accomplished in four ways. First, we provide an ontological definition of authentic leadership, rooted in two distinct yet related philosophical approaches to human well-being: hedonism and eudaemonia. Second, we develop a multi-component model of authentic leadership based on recent theoretical developments in the area of authenticity. The resulting model consists of self-awareness, unbiased processing, authentic behavior/acting and authentic relational orientation. Third, we discuss the personal antecedents (leader characteristics) of authentic leadership as well as the outcomes of authentic leadership for both leaders and followers and examine the processes linking authentic leadership to its antecedents and outcomes. Fourth, we discuss the implications of this work for authentic leadership theory and then provide some practical implications for developing authentic leaders.

                                        Description:
Research has begun to recognize the role leaders can play in enhancing semi-autonomous work team effectiveness. One recent approach suggests that leaders enhance team functioning by intervening in the context of specific events, where the effectiveness of active intervention strategies is moderated by event disruptiveness [Morgeson, F.P. (2005). The external leadership of self-managing teams: Intervening in the context of novel and disruptive events. Journal of Applied Psychology, 90 497-508.]. The present study extends this research by examining the relationship between event criticality, urgency, and duration and event disruptiveness as well as the amount of time leaders spend managing different types of events. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods in four different organizations, we found that these three characteristics of events were positively related to team disruption, but only urgency was related to the amount of time leaders spent managing the event. A qualitative analysis of the events revealed that the impact of events on team functioning and leader intervention varied according to the type of event encountered. The implications of these findings for team leadership research are discussed.

                                          Description:
Leadership scholars have called for additional research on leadership skill requirements and how those requirements vary by organizational level. In this study, leadership skill requirements are conceptualized as being layered (strata) and segmented (plex), and are thus described using a strataplex. Based on previous conceptualizations, this study proposes a model made up of four categories of leadership skill requirements: Cognitive skills, Interpersonal skills, Business skills, and Strategic skills. The model is then tested in a sample of approximately 1000 junior, midlevel, and senior managers, comprising a full career track in the organization. Findings support the ''plex'' element of the model through the emergence of four leadership skill requirement categories. Findings also support the ''strata'' portion of the model in that different categories of leadership skill requirements emerge at different organizational levels, and that jobs at higher levels of the organization require higher levels of all leadership skills. In addition, although certain Cognitive skill requirements are important across organizational levels, certain Strategic skill requirements only fully emerge at the highest levels in the organization. Thus a strataplex proved to be a valuable tool for conceptualizing leadership skill requirements across organizational levels.
