Customer Reviews:
A fantastic introduction of an artist's vision for children.......1998-01-07
Eye catching, interesting, imaginative, and inspiring. These are things that hold a young persons attention and give them the interest to pursue art. Colleen Carroll has collected a fine group of art pieces that does all of these, plus her writing of the art and the artists help young people see not only animals, but everything in a different way. She asks many questions to help a child think and imagine. I think this is a fantastic book that should be in every child's library, even if most of the artists in the book are dead..... oh...except for me! My painting is on page 32.

God's Own Creations to Appreciate........2005-09-11
There is reason to believe that every organism on earth today, whether the reader or a microbe in his guts is the the product of continuous descent from a common ancestor of almost four billion years ago (OUT OF CHAOS, 1977). So all life-on-earth is one, according to Louis J. Halle. He worries about the causes and consequences; tries to understahd why things happen. He is part of that guild of writer-naturalists who are masters of elegant and pleasing prose, along the vein of Thoreau.
"We see distinctly only what we know thoroughly" wrote Edward A. Wilson. Mankind's selective breeding, as Darwin noted, for the "ostentation of the beauty of birds," which accomplished wonders without improving on the original as one sees it in its native setting. Today, as I walked to Greenwood Cemetery to put flowers on Al Curtis' grave, I found a dead gray (with black accents) Titmouse, such a small little bird, so I wrapped it in pink plastic which is what I found near the scene of its death, and buried it at the spot where I have just planted a mimosa tree. The White Spruce which reigned supreme in that place for years was cut down to provide more light for the entrance to the parking lot of an apartment complex. Thus, my precious find -- the lovely God's creature, will help the mimosa to grow and will include its little spirit with the beautiful flowers of the adult mimosa.
It is curious, but not irrelevant that, although the elephant is the principal "beast-of-burden" employed by the human population in India, we give that description to the mule in America. No domestic variety of the elephant exists and the animals to be be domesticated are captured from the wild population. Where else is anything like that true? We have African elephants here in the zoos, and a place near Savannah, Tennessee, has an elephant ranch for old circus animals who can no longer carry out their tricks. In the past, one such elephant went wild and killed a person in the audience and she was strung up on a high wire equipment out in a field and killed for all to see here in Knoxville, a vainglorious event of the almost-forgotten past.
The most abundant bird of prey is the kite in India where it is a scavenger like the seagulls. It is like the American symbol, the bald Eagle which Dolly Parton saved and let loose in its natural habitat. Kites are almost the most representative of bird-life on this planet. They would have reason to complain of the bad name given them in English literature as they are among the most beautiful birds, the most graceful of flyers. The American national bird is, of course, the bald eagle. Tennessee's state bird is the gray and white mockingbird. I love the Eastern bluebird and doves of all kinds.
Louis Halle wrote SPRINGTIME IN WASHINGTON, when the world there is bathed in the beauty of the cherry trees. In Knoxville, it is April when our dogwoods all across the county bloom in their splendor. One month a year, Knoxville is actually beautiful; the rest of the time, it is the ugly, scruffy town a Frenchman called it back in the Fifties. He has published books in history, natural history, philosophy and international politics. He had a U. S. Dept. of State career but lives in Geneva, Switzerland.

Fundamentals of Aerodynamics (Mcgraw-Hill Series in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering)
ASIN: 1402016638 |
Book Description
The book provides a solid and unitary mathematical foundation of the basic and advanced principles of aerodynamics. The densities of the fundamental solutions are determined from singular integral equations. The fundamental solutions method in aerodynamics was considered for the first time and used by the author in over 30 papers published in prestigious journals (e.g. QAM, AIAA, ZAMM, etc) in order to develop a unitary theory. The boundary element method is used for numerical approximations in compressible aerodynamics. The text incorporates several original contributions, among other traditional mathematical methods.
The book also represents a comprehensive presentation of research results since the seminal books on aerodynamics of Ashley and Landahl (1965) and Katz & Plotkin (1991).
A rigorous mathematical approach is used to present and explain classic and modern results in this field of science. The author has therefore conceived several appendices on the Distribution Theory, the singular Integral Equations Theory, the Finite Part, Gauss Quadrature Formulae, etc.
The book is concluded by a relevant bibliographical list which is especially useful for researchers.
The book is aimed primarily at applied mathematicians, aeronautical engineers and space science researchers. The text may be used also as a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical foundations fo aerodynamics, by graduate students n engineering and fluid dynamics with a strong mathematical background.

Fundamentals of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
ASIN: 0521554748 |
Book Description
The purpose of this book is to present the basic elements of numerical methods for compressible flows. It is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and specialists working in high speed flows. The focus is on the unsteady one-dimensional Euler equations which form the basis for numerical algorithms in compressible fluid mechanics. The author believes it is therefore essential to understand the development and implementation of these algorithms in their original one-dimensional context. The text is supplemented by numerous end-of-chapter exercises.
Customer Reviews:
Good Text .......2007-02-13
This text assumes that the reader is somewhat familiar with Gas Dynamics, Compressible Flow, and Fluid Dynamics in general. However, the author presents much of the material in a clear manner with plenty of mathematical rigor. Some of the examples are a different from traditional approaches, but the exercises at the end of each section include solutions which is helpful in learning the material.

Book Description
The outstanding points of our book consist of investigations into the possibility of the numerical schemes of the direct method for solving the Boltzmann equation. Both deterministic and Monte Carlo procedures are considered to evaluate the collision integrals. The main mathematical tool is the conservative splitting method on the basis of which, a set of classical and new problems are solved to study nonequilibrium gas flows. This monograph differs from other books in the same field, because, for example the book by G.A. Bird is concerned with the approach of simulation of rarefied gas flows and the book by C. Cercignani deals with the classical kinetic theory issues and describes mainly the analytical and engineering methods for solving the Boltzmann equation. Our book is the first (as we know) monograph which is devoted to the numerical direct solving of the Boltzmann equation. The intended level of readership are graduate and postgraduate students and researches. This book can be used by the target groups as the mathematical apparatus to numerical study of complex problems of nonequilibrium gas flows.

Book Description
This book provides an introduction to unsteady aerodynamics with emphasis on the analysis and computation of inviscid and viscous two-dimensional flows over airfoils at low speeds. It begins with a discussion of the physics of unsteady flows and an explanation of lift and thrust generation, airfoil flutter, gust response and dynamic stall. This is followed by an exposition of the four major calculation methods in currents use, namely inviscid-panel, boundary-layer, viscous-inviscid interaction and Navier-Stokes methods. Examples are provided to demonstrate the use of each method and panel and interactive boundary layer codes are included on the CD-ROM. Undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, scientists and engineers concerned with aeronautical, hydronautical and mechanical engineering problems will gain understanding of the physics of unsteady low-speed flows and an ability to analyze these flows with modern computational methods.

Book Description
This textbook is written for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as engineers who will develop or use code in the simulation of fluid flows or other physical phenomena. The objective of the book is to give the reader the basis for understanding the way numerical schemes achieve accurate and stable simulations of physical phenomena. It is based on the finite-difference method and simple enough problems that allow also the analytic solutions to be worked out. ODEs as well as hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic types are treated. The reader also will find a chapter on the techniques of linearization of nonlinear problems. The final chapter applies the material to the equations of gas dynamics. The book builds on simple model equations and, pedagogically, on a host of problems given together with their solutions.

Book Description
This book presents research results of more than thirty years of investigations in this field in Russia as well as new ones of the authors. Principal methods and results for solutions of the inverse boundary value problems of aerohydrodynamics for 2D flows are presented. The essence of the problems consists in finding an airfoil shape (isolated, multicomponent or an element of a cascade) by pressure or velocity distributions given on the contour of the airfoil which provide the required aerodynamic charachteristics. Mathematical models of ideal liquid, boundary layer and Chaplygin gas are used. Special attention is paid to mathematical aspects of the theory and to optimization problems. Numerous examples illustrate the exposition.

Book Description
Method of Discrete Vortices presents a mathematical substantiation and in-depth description of numerical methods for solving singular integral equations with one-dimensional and multiple Cauchy integrals. The book also presents the fundamentals of the theory of singular equations and numerical methods as applied to solving problems in such branches of mechanics as aerodynamics, elasticity, and electrodynamics.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference.......2000-08-06
The authors have done an excellent job of presenting the method of discrete vortices. If you require a very thorough, mathematically intensive presentation of votex lattice theory, including the requirements for numerical stability this book will provide it.
The book requires a very good mathematical background if the book is going to be of use. I would recommend the book for those studying at post graduate level and higher in fields of computational fluid mechanics.
Book Description
Paladin is pleased to reissue this classic book in the field of military battle knives. Allied Military Fighting Knives chronicles in detail the background, development and variations of both common and unusual combat knives. It also provides firsthand accounts by and in-depth interviews with the men who used them in battle, including U.S. Marine Raiders; U.S. Army Rangers; U.S., Canadian and British airborne units; the legendary Gurkhas; the First Special Service Force; such clandestine outfits as the OSS and SOE; and even officers who served in the Shanghai Municipal Police with W.E. Fairbairn and E.A. Sykes. In addition to its focus on military-issue blades, the book devotes chapters to two of the leading private companies that provided knives to soldiers in all war zones - Ek and Randall. A must for historians and collectors alike.
Customer Reviews:
Welcome Resurrection of a Definitive Classic.......2005-11-30
It is good to see this classic work has been reprinted. No serious collector of WW II military cutlery can do without this thorough work in their reference collection concerning fighting knives used by the Allied Forces of WW II.
The popularity of this work is evidenced by the high prices asked by the book trade in the after market evidenced by the listings on this site under the hardback original edition. [...]
Ir gives short schrift to working blades which could be used for fighting. Most of it is about U.S. and British patterns and has little on French and orher nations' issues. It includes much textual description and documentation from official sources; in addition, many first hand accounts are quoted.
No need to go on and on about this, If you have any serious interest in the subject this is a must.
