Book Description
The goal of "tissue engineering" is to repair or replace tissues and organs by delivering implanted cells, scaffolds, DNA, proteins, and/or protein fragments at surgery. Tissue engineering merges aspects of engineering and biology, and many rapid achievements in this field have arisen in part from significant advances in cell and molecular biology.
Despite its early successes, however, tissue engineers have faced challenges in repairing or replacing tissues that serve a predominantly biomechanical function. This book addresses and discusses a number of issues that need to be addressed in order for tissue engineers to effectively repair or replace these load-bearing structures. What are the thresholds of force, stress, and strain that normal tissues transmit or encounter? What are the mechanical properties of these tissues when subjected to expected in vivo stresses and strains, as well as under failure conditions? Which of these properties should a tissue engineer insist upon incorporating into the design? Do tissue engineered repairs and replacements need to exactly duplicate the structure and function of the normal tissue or organ in order to be successful? When developing these implants in culture, how do physical factors such as mechanical stress regulate cell behavior in bioreactors as compared to signals experienced in vivo? And finally, can tissue engineers mechanically stimulate these implants before surgery to produce a better repair outcome?
Chapters written by well-known researchers discuss these matters and provide guidelines and a summary of the current state of technology in functional tissue engineering. The book will be useful to students and researchers as it will increase awareness among tissue engineers of the importance of restoring "function" when engineering tissue constructs, and identifying the critical structural and mechanical requirements needed for each construct. It will also provide an invaluable source of information to help tissue engineers incorporate these functional criteria into the design, manufacture, and optimization of tissue engineered products. Finally it serves as a reference and teaching text for the rapidly increasing population of students and investigators in the field of tissue engineering.

Book Description
This is the 3rd in a series of reviews, centered on a single major topic of bone replacement (Vol. 1 Bone Formation, Vol. 2 Bone Resorption) written by acknowledged authorities in the field. The biology of stem cells and cell signals, knowledge needed to make stem cell engineered, bone tissue a reality and how to prevent bone allograft infection is discussed. Furthermore, non-degradable and biodegradable scaffolds, necessary implants to attract bone cells and build suitable bone replacements follow. Other topics are motion and bone degeneration analysis and effect of mechanical factors on bone healing, implants and their role in reparative dentistry and the application of computational modeling to prosthesis design.
This text will interest bioengineers, orthopedists, reconstructive surgeons, dentists, physiotherapists and all working in the fields of skeletal and dental tissue engineering and rehabilitation, as well as basic bone scientists interested in translational research.

From the author: Regenerating the load-bearing tissues requires 3D scaffolds that balance the temporary mechanical function with the biological requirements. In functional tissue engineering, designing scaffolds with biomimetic mechanical properties could promote tissue ingrowth since the cells are sensitive to their local mechanical environment. This work aims to design scaffolds that mimic the mechanical response of the biological tissues under physiological loading conditions. Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) scaffolds with varying porosities and pore sizes were made by the 3D-plotting technique. The scaffolds were tested under unconfined ramp compression to compare their stress profile under load with that of bovine cartilage. A comparison between the material parameters estimated for the scaffolds and for the bovine cartilage based on the biphasic theory enabled the definition of an optimum window for the porosity and pore size of these constructs. Moreover, the finite element prediction for the stress distribution inside the scaffolds, surrounded by the host cartilaginous tissue, demonstrated a negligible perturbation of the stress field at the site of implantation. The finite element modeling tools in combination with the developed methodology for optimal porosity/pore size determination can be used to improve the design of biomimetic scaffolds. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 47:608-618, 2007. [c] 2007 Society of Plastics Engineers*

Book Description
This thoroughly revised and updated edition of one of the classics of kinetics text books continues the successful concept of the 1974 edition: In its first part, a simplified approach to the determination of rate laws and mechnisms is given steadily working up to complex situations. In the following chapters the principles developed there are extensively used in a comprehensive account of reactions of transition metal complexes, including reactions of biological signifacance.
The text is illustrated by numerous figures and tables. Points of further interest are highlighted in special insets. 140 problems, taken from the original literature, enable the student to apply and deepen his newly acquired knowledge and make the book highly useful for courses in inorganic and organometallic reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, a wealth of over 1700 references renders it an indispensable work for the active researcher.

Customer Reviews:
For those who love gloom and doom and complex emotions.......2005-11-01
This volume contains Hawthorne's most well- known stories, among them "Young Goodman Brown" " The Birthmark" " The Hollow of Two Hills" "Ethan Brand."
They are written with that complicated, gloomy,Gothic, haunting, somehow discomfiting Hawthorne style. They bear them some sense of predestination, and irrevocable doom, a sense of sin and its punishment.
They have that kind of unique psychological penetration which marks Hawthorne's genius.
I can never say I loved reading these stories, really enjoyed this work. But always sensed they had a deep meaning and real value.
excellent selection, excellent introduction.......2000-10-28
Hawthorne was, of course, one of (if not *the*) most important writers of 19th Century America and this edition demonstrates why. The level of engagement Hawthorne had with early America, the level of detail in his texts, and the level of scholarship advanced by the editor, demonstrate why Hawthorne is, inded, one of our contemporaries. Nobody can consider him- or herself "knowledgeable" about American literary history or American literature without reading "Young Goodman Brown," "My Kinsaman, Major Molineux," "The Minister's Black Veil," or "The May-Pole of Merry-Mount": these tales engage, variously, in themes of religiosity, national identity or formation, and the desire to re-write American-ness. indeed, these tales, which later influenced writers as disparate as Herman Melville, Henry James and Gertrude Stein, provide the very fabric of "American" literature. Although we have all been beaten over the head by Hawthorne in High School (if not college), an errand into his wilderness is, nonetheless, rewarding, fascinating, and enlightening: Colacurcio's editing and attention to detail (much like the subject of the book!) makes the volume accessible and rewarding.
interesting.......2000-07-06
there's a lot of interesting content in this book. it opens your mind to a lot of new personalities.
