Book Description

Dictionaries are didactic books used as consultation instruments for self-teaching. They are composed by an ordered set of linguistic units which reflects a double structure, the macrostructure which correspond to the word list and the microstructure that refers to the contents of each lemma. The great value of dictionaries nests in the fact that they establish a standard nomenclature and prevent in that way the appearance of new useless synonyms.
This dictionary contains a total of about 27.500 main English entries, and over of 130.000 translations that should normally sufficiently cover all fields of life sciences. The basic criteria used to accept a word a part of the dictionary during the development period in order of importance were usage, up-to-dateness, specificity, simplicity and conceptual relationships. The dictionary meets the standards of higher education and covers all main fields of life sciences by setting its primary focus on the vastly developing fields of cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, developmental biology, microbiology, genetics and also the fields of human anatomy, histology, pathology, physiology, zoology and botany.
The fields of ecology, paleontology, systematics, evolution, biostatistics, plant physiology, plant anatomy, plant histology, biometry and lab techniques have been sufficiently covered but in a more general manner. The latest Latin international anatomical terminology "Terminologia Anatomica" or "TA" has been fully incorporated and all anatomical entries have been given their international Latin TA synonym. This dictionary will be a valuable and helpful tool for all scientists, teachers, students and generally all those that work within the fields of life sciences.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice - Certainly more than a reference work.......2006-01-26

This book is more than a reference book.
It is expensive but also one of its kind! Well organized, extensively covering all claimed scientific fields and has such a vast number of synonyms in each language (in English for example it presents over 22.000 cross-referenced synonyms) that could be also used as a scientific thesaurus.

The incorporation of the Greek, Italian and Latin languages in this singe volume is without doubt a great accomplishment since all the previous languages are source languages of scientific terminology of the fields of life sciences.
Although most scientific dictionaries lack grammatical information, this book presents a clear brief info that is very helpful for all those trying to compile scientific texts in a foreign language.

Closing this review it would be a mistake to overlook that in its 2590 pages one can find the modern translation of almost any term -from- and -to- any language between English Greek German Italian and Latin.

    Book Description

A comprehensive account of one of the main directions of algebraic topology, this book focuses on the Sullivan conjecture and its generalizations and applications. Lionel Schwartz collects here for the first time some of the most innovative work on the theory of modules over the Steenrod algebra, including ideas on the Segal conjecture, work from the late 1970s by Adams and Wilkerson, and topics in algebraic group representation theory.

This course-tested book provides a valuable reference for algebraic topologists and includes foundational material essential for graduate study.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting mathematics.......2002-07-21

Fixed points of mappings are of course of enormous interested in the fields of dynamical systems and differential equations. This book however is interested in fixed points from the standpoint of algebraic topology, namely with the study of the homotopy type of the fixed point set of a group action. This motivates the consideration of a homotopy fixed point set, and the author studies specifically the homotopy fixed point set of a finite group acting on a finite complex. From an equivariant point of view, a homotopy fixed point is a set of maps equivariant under the integers modulo 2 (Z/2) from the "antipodal" sphere (i.e the ordinary sphere provided with the antipodal action) to a finite Z/2-CW-complex. A homotopy fixed point is such a map, and ordinary fixed points determine homotopy fixed points. The Sullivan fixed point conjecture asserts that the mapping of ordinary fixed points to homotopy fixed points is a homotopy equivalence, and this conjecture is one of the main topics of the book. The resolution of this conjecture was accomplished by Haynes Miller, with other contributions made by Gunnar Carlsson and J. Lannes. As a point of historical fact, Miller first proved the Sullivan conjecture in the context of pointed maps from the classifying space of a finite group to a finite CW-complex. With the compact-open topology, he showed that this space of maps is weakly contractible. Another line of thought on this topic and considered in this book is that of the fixed point set of a G-space localized at a prime p. The question of whether this fixed point set is weakly homotopy equivalent to the homotopy fixed point set of G acting on the p-localization of a finite CW-complex was solved by Carlsson via a consideration of the Segal conjecture.

The author gives a nice overview of these results, and does so by first considering background material from the theory of unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra. The reader is expected to have a solid background in algebraic topology, particularly in the homotopy theory of CW-complexes, Eilenberg-Maclane spaces, Postnikov systems, the theory of spectral reduced and unreduced cohomology, cohomology operations, and K-theory. The Steenrod algebra has its origins in the consideration of stable Z/2 cohomology operations, where these operations can all be written in terms of Steenrod operations. Consideration of relations among the Steenrod squares result in a family of relations called the Adem relations. This construction can be generalized to a prime p by considering generators other than the Steenrod squares, and dividing out the Adem relations (these are more complex than for the case p = 2). The calculation of the cohomology of Eilenberg-Maclane spaces leads to a characterization of the Steenrod algebra as the algebra of all transformations of mod p cohomology that commute with suspension. Such transformations are called 'stable'.
The mod p cohomology of a space as a module over the Steenrod algebra is unstable, meaning that it is trivial in negative degrees. The author then characterizes the category of unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra (designated U by the author), and shows that is has enough projectives and that it is (locally) Noetherian. That this category has enough injectives is shown using Brown-Gitler technology. This involves the construction of the Brown-Gitler modules, which are related to the Milnor algebra (the dual of the Steenrod algebra, familiar from the elementary theory), and the Carlsson modules. The later are related to Carlsson's work on the Segal conjecture, and their description involves some interesting use of the combinatorics of binary trees. The Lannes functor is introduced as a generalization of this tensor product that still gives an injective category, and its properties are outlined in detail. Modular representation theory is used in the book to study indecomposable reduced U-injectives, and their graded vector space structure is studied using the familiar Poincare series. Then the quotient category of U by its subcategory of nilpotents is studied via a filtration on it, the quotient categories of this filtration being identified with the modular representations of the symmetric groups.
The last part of the book finally gets down to the Sullivan conjecture, beginning with a discussion of the Andre-Quillen cohomology of unstable algebras over the Steenrod algebra. All of the familiar tools from algebraic topology, such as Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequences and the Borel construction are used to prove Miller's version of the Sullivan conjecture and also a generalized version of it.

            Book Description

The main goal of this book is to demonstrate the usefulness of set-theoretical methods in various questions of real analysis and classical measure theory. In this context, many statements and facts from analysis are treated as consequences of purely set-theoretical assertions which can successfully be applied to measures and Baire category. Topics covered include similarities and differences between measure and category; constructions of nonmeasurable sets and of sets without the Baire property; three aspects of the measure extension problem; the principle of condensation of singularities from the point of view of the Kuratowski-Ulam theorem; transformation groups and invariant (quasi-invariant) measures; the uniqueness property of an invariant measure; and ordinary differential equations with nonmeasurable right-hand sides. Audience: The material presented in the book is essentially self-contained and is accessible to a wide audience of mathematicians. It will appeal to specialists in set theory, mathematical analysis, measure theory and general topology. It can also be recommended as a textbook for postgraduate students who are interested in the applications of set-theoretical methods to the above-mentioned domains of mathematics.

              Book Description

Finite model theory has its origin in classical model theory, but owes its systematic development to research from complexity theory. The book presents the main results of descriptive complexity theory, that is, the connections between axiomatizability of classes of finite structures and their complexity with respect to time and space bounds. The logics that are important in this context include fixed- point logics, transitive closure logics, and also certain infinitary languages; their model theory is studied in full detail. Other topics include DATALOG languages, quantifiers and oracles, 0-1 laws, and optimization and approximation problems. The book is written in such a way that the resp. parts on model theory and descriptive complexity theory may be read independently.

3 out of 5 stars A nice MATH book on this topic.......2000-09-06

This book presents many nice topics in finite model theory. The material on infinitary logic and the finite model properties are nicely presented here and not really available elsewhere. The material on Finite Automata and Logic, and on Descriptive Complexity , is available and better done in other books. This entire field is a cross of computer science and math, and this book is strong on the math end, but not on the computer science angle.

                Book Description

Decomposable sets since T. R. Rockafellar in 1968 are one of basic notions in nonlinear analysis, especially in the theory of multifunctions. A subset K of measurable functions is called decomposable if

                (Q) for all and measurable A.

This book attempts to show the present stage of "decomposable analysis" from the point of view of fixed point theory. The book is split into three parts, beginning with the background of functional analysis, proceeding to the theory of multifunctions and lastly, the decomposability property.

Mathematicians and students working in functional, convex and nonlinear analysis, differential inclusions and optimal control should find this book of interest. A good background in fixed point theory is assumed as is a background in topology.

this play covers the main parts and plots of the book but misses more then its worth. i have done the play and read the book after words and wow. theres a diffrence there.

                  2 out of 5 stars Awful.......2005-07-28

A bastardization, this play attempts to capture the feel of Orwell's classic novel, and it fails miserably. It omits essential points of the plot and abridges several of the more important moments-- such as when Julia and Winston fall in love (a mere 1/4 page of the script). More importantly, because theater cannot "enter the internal thoughts" of characters as easily as books can (and this play has no monologs or soliloquies of that sort), the responsibility to imagine Winston's feelings lie wholly with the audience. George Orwell makes Room 101 real and terrifying; the play makes it a mockery. I would highly reccomend against this dramatization. I gave it 2 stars and not 1 because as a completely original play, it's OK. But, audiences will expect something of the caliber of Orwell's book, and this will leave them disappointed.

"Outside, even through the shut window pane, the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no color in anything except the posters that were plastered everywhere."

The year is 1984; the scene is London, largest population center of Airstrip One.

Airstrip One is part of the vast political entity Oceania, which is eternally at war with one of two other vast entities, Eurasia and Eastasia. At any moment, depending upon current alignments, all existing records show either that Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia and allied with Eastasia, or that it has always been at war with Eastasia and allied with Eurasia. Winston Smith knows this, because his work at the Ministry of Truth involves the constant "correction" of such records. "'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.'"

In a grim city and a terrifying country, where Big Brother is always Watching You and the Thought Police can practically read your mind, Winston is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. He knows the Party's official image of the world is a fluid fiction. He knows the Party controls the people by feeding them lies and narrowing their imaginations through a process of bewilderment and brutalization that alienates each individual from his fellows and deprives him of every liberating human pursuit from reasoned inquiry to sexual passion. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be.

Newspeak, doublethink, thoughtcrime--in 1984, George Orwell created a whole vocabulary of words concerning totalitarian control that have since passed into our common vocabulary. More importantly, he has portrayed a chillingly credible dystopia. In our deeply anxious world, the seeds of unthinking conformity are everywhere in evidence; and Big Brother is always looking for his chance. --Daniel Hintzsche

                  Book Description

First appearing in 1949, the novel 1984 seemed like a nightmarish vision of the future in a totalitarian world. Playing on the public's worst fears about governmental control, different readings saw the former Soviet Union as the object of satire, while others focused on increasingly powerful democratic governments.

The title, George Orwell's 1984, part of Chelsea House Publishers' Modern Critical Interpretations series, presents the most important 20th-century criticism on George Orwell's 1984 through extracts of critical essays by well-known literary critics. This collection of criticism also features a short biography on George Orwell, a chronology of the author's life, and an introductory essay written by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Dystopian Vision.......2007-10-07

"1984" may well be the poster child for the genre of dystopian literature. Personally, I thought Orwell was most successful when it came to describing the society around Winston or the psychological struggle during the interogations. The love story was a weaker part of the book (for me).
Unlike Huxley's "Brave New World", Orwell dosen't try to go for dark humor but instead uses the society of fear to convey his views on totalitarinism to the audience. Personally I thought Orwell's characters weren't as interesting as those in Huxley's or Lewis's dystopian novels (C.S. Lewis wrote "That Hideous Strenght"). The concept for Room 101 was imaginative but almost seemed to give the Ocenaian officials an unrealistic advantage (personally, I feel some people could have overcome even fear). Perhaps I shouldn't get on to Orwell too much over this; after all Lewis's villans tried to overcome human nature in their own ways as well.
Overall, Orwell wrote an interesting work. It is even more interesting when one compares the totalitarianism of Oceania to that of the U.S.S.R. (notice that Big Brother and Goldstein have some resemblances to Stalin and Trotsky). I am currently reading a book far more chilling than Orwell's fiction. "The Gulag Archipelago" would make a very good companion to "1984" as it gives a picture of actual totalitarianism at the time when Orwell wrote his fictional masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling, Yet Moving In Places.......2007-09-26

This book relates the experiences of one Winston Smith in a world where all people belong to one of three totalitarian superpowers. In this dystopian novel, the state requires nothing less than the complete submission of individuals' inner thoughts. "The Party is not interested in the overt act: the thought is all we care about." There is no escape ("Nobody ever escaped detection, and nobody ever failed to confess.") and no practical hope for a free future where human rights would exist once more.

The story is beautiful in parts--such as in the places where it deals with a forbidden love and an individual's struggle to maintain his identity--and incredibly hopeless in others. Orwell is an amazing writer and I spent a lot of time underlining different phrases and sentences. This book is frightening. As Erich Fromm writes in the afterword, "...it would be most unfortunate if the reader smugly interpreted 1984 as another description of Stalinist barbarism, and if he does not see that it means us, too." I recommend this book to all.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any library..........2007-09-15

"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past."

My definition of a truly classic novel is one that is so talked about and referenced that you can know all about the book and it's message without having ever actually read it. 1984 is one of the most glaring examples of this, as terms such as "Big Brother" and "Doublespeak" are now mainstream concepts that no longer require explanation.

The book itself gained its popularity, however, by successfully reaching a broad audience by exaggerating and reducing the complicated debate of the illusion of free will and freedom of thought in any kind of government structure that strives to control and manipulate the populace for its own benefit in an almost unbelievable science fiction setting. The extremes that are reached in 1984's may seem only possible in a work of fiction, yet there is a truth beneath the pulp novel trappings that most readers can not avoid recognizing.

Note: For those who have already read this, I have a suggestion. Read 1984 again, only assume that the book actually takes place in our modern times, and that the narrator is a paranoid schizophrenic.

George Orwell's 1984 is no longer a thing of the future.

The Internet is everywhere--including your wireless cameraphone.

Digital technology makes surveillance push-button easy. Those in power cannot resist. And we even do it to ourselves using social networks like Facebook and Myspace. Soon, every phone will incorporate GPS location technology.

Are we prepared for the inevitable?

In a time when the pace of technology continues to accelerate, Orwell's classic has never been more relevant.

5 out of 5 stars One of the classics.......2007-09-13

This book is one of my all time favorites. Classic in every respect of the word. George Orwell's vision should be taken with a grain of salt, but look at all the striking similarities there are to the world that we live in. With all the recent and upcoming advances in science and technology we would do well to remember the world in 1984.
