Book Description
Insects represent over half of all biological diversity. They pervade terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, functioning as carnivores, herbivores and detritivores. Their ecology is of crucial economic importance to our planet and therefore ourselves - as pests of our crops, vectors of diseases, as beneficials in food webs, pollination and biological control. This textbook strikes a balance between theory and practice and between pure and applied ecology. In presenting the basic themes of insect ecology, it provides a sound background in evolutionary ecology, population dynamics and environmental interactions. These concepts are subsequently applied to a number of topical issues including climate change, the conservation of biodiversity, epidemiology and pest management.Based on a wealth of international teaching expertise, Ecology of Insects is aimed a undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in insect ecology and ap0plied entomology, as well as wider degree programmes in biology, general ecology, zoology, forestry and agriculture.

Carbohydrate Chemistry (Oxford Chemistry Primers, 99)
ASIN: 0387949518 |
Book Description
Carbohydrates are the most widely distributed naturally-occurring organic compounds on Earth. They make up much of our food, clothing and shelter, and are as vital to national economies as they are to our diet. This book is the first broad treatment of carbohydrate chemistry in many years, and presents the structures, reactions, modifications, and properties of carbohydrates. Woven throughout the text are discussions of biological properties of carbohydrates, their industrial applications, and the history of the field of carbohydrate chemistry. Written for students as well as practicing scientists, this text/reference will be of interest to a wide range of disciplines influenced by carbohydrates: biochemistry, chemistry, food and nutrition, microbiology, pharmacology, and medicine.
Book Description
Carbohydrates are the most abundant natural products, in line with their role as energy stores and structural building blocks in plants and algae. They are versatile enough to serve as encoders of biological information and, last but not least, they are involved in a variety of molecular recognition processes. Research into carbohydrate and glycoconjugate functions in cell-to-cell communication processes has even created a new and rapidly developing field of study: glycobiology.
Thisbe Lindhorst's successful book is now available in its second edition. Going from the basic concepts right up to the most recent results, this didactically written book features numerous practical examples of synthetic and analytical methods. The contents have been thoroughly updated, and a new chapter on mass spectroscopy of carbohydrates has been added.
With its clear and lucid style, this introduction to carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry is essential reading for students and postgraduate scientists in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy and biomedicine.
"a very readable book which presents carbohydrate chemistry and, in later sections, biochemistry as exciting areas to work and study. The author captures a sense of wonder and inspiration from the very elegance of these areas of science and their application in the real worlds of pharmaceutical and medical research."

Book Description
"For twelve years, in so many ways we had been as one, everything had been shared, there had been no secrets. Yet the past still held secrets, the past threw its shadows, and the shadows sometimes separated us."
Since Manderly burned, tormented Maxim de Winter and his demure second wife have fled the ghosts of a dark, unspoken yesterday. And now they have come home to England -- to bury what was and to start anew. But the sensual warmth of a golden autumn cannot mask the chill of a lingering evil. For October's gentle breeze whispers that Rebecca -- beautiful, mysterious, malevolent Rebecca -- is haunting their lives once more.
Customer Reviews:
Perfectly Imitates DuMaurier's Style.......2007-10-06
To be fair, probably nothing Susan Hill could have written would truly satisfy the fans of the original, nor would there be much point in a sequel describing how Maxim and his nameless bride lived on in happily dull exile or cosy English obscurity. Given the pathology of both characters (and they seem to be easily as emotionally crippled as Rebecca, though better-behaved), I can hardly imagine a book that more perfectly captures DuMaurier's prose or the deeply flawed characters she set up in the original. When I first read the original (as a teenager) Maxim's brooding (and all those tight little lines around his mouth and eyes when he is at all distressed, to which the heroine constantly alludes) seemed wonderfully romantic; now, the fact that the unnamed Mrs. DeWinter must constantly be monitoring his face for tightness, pallor or general signs of distress (not to mention panicking if he shakes out his breakfast napkin with too tight a snap) would be ludicrous if it weren't so pathetic. But her maddening catering to his every whim (did she really get all that strong in exile? Because even in the original, we read that ten years later, she shies away from so much as reading a newspaper clipping that would upset him!) is almost what makes it so entertaining. One is constantly imagining how differently one would behave, in similar circumstances - and that would include telling Maxim what he could do with his moods. (Bearing in mind, too, that this takes place following WWII, when millions died and millions more survived with nothing - yet we are supposed to be concerned with the perfect peace of mind of Maxim De Winter, who as all of Europe is being reconstructed, and with great wealth at his disposal, can think of nothing better to do than seek out nice places to brood....) As others have pointed out, the characters here behave exactly as they did in the original: The bride, no longer quite so young, is caught in an endless loop of imagined pleasures or disasters, stifling the smallest personal desire in order to placate her lord and master, never living in the moment but always the past or future (whether anticipating ruin or fantasizing about her unborn boys). Halfway through the book, I was convinced it would end with her shooting Maxim, and I'd have cheered - because he, of course, goes on making all the decisions, cutting short her temporary pleasures because some furrow has crossed his brow. He is contemptuous of his grieving brother-in-law for not showing the proper stiff upper lip - but what is Maxim's life but endless cowardace, fleeing (as someone here also said) if someone looks at him funny! Of course, it is absurd that Favell and Mrs. Danvers should be allowed to act as they do, when any sane person would simply kick them out of the hotel/off the property and get out a restraining order. But then, these characters are not sane. And given the dynamics sent up, and the heroine's disasterous inability to seek happiness as her husband's equal and not his placator, the ending is well-earned, dramatically and psychologically plausible, and written very much as DuMaurier might have written it. The last sentence in particular brings us full circle. (I would also note that the lyrical descriptions of the English countryside, though excellent in themselves, add probably a fourth to the book's length, and it would have been tighter without them, though not so much DuMaurier. I did find myself skimming through them, by the end.) Susan Hill seems to have admirably accomplished what she set out to do.
A Great Read.......2007-08-23
If you get it out of your head that this is a different author and has a different writing style and plot you can get into the book. However if you think this is going to be just like "Rebecca", and severely compare it, you will miss out on a great book.
This book flows with more of a description type of writing style, more than dialog. The characters drift about until they find their final destination to rest. I love the way she describes things in almost a Zen like way. It was a great read, I did not like the ending but the rest of the book was nice.
Are we sure that Daphne Du Maurier DID NOT write this very good book? .......2007-04-29
Wow, this book is really, really, good and the author's writing style resembles Daphne Du Maurier's so strongly, that it really does seem as if you are reading a sequel that been written by Daphne Du Marurier herself!
As one would expect the physical descriptions of the various settings in which this book takes place, are vivid and richly detailed. And I freely admit that I absolutely love books and/or movies where the house is just as much a character as the people in the book!
One of the things my husband likes to tease me about are the outstanding characteristics of the "movies and books liked by Barb." Which, according to my husband, and I guess I'll admit he's right as far as movies go are "Made in black and white, before 1950, everyone speaks in English accents, and they often are dressed in costumes and nothing happens!" And I have to admit that the kind of fiction I enjoy also can be described as "Written before 1950, about English people, and are likely to be wearing costumes, and, or course, live in the obligatory country house and nothing happens!" LOL!
Susan Hill does a simply superb job of re-creating that claustraphobic little world that Daphne Du Maurier introduced to us in Rebecca. The story is good, and, of course, it is pretty much inevitable that Mrs. DeWinter would encounter the despicable Jack Favell and the obsessed Mrs. Danvers again.
You know, it occurs to me that Mrs. DeWinter seems to be a kind of procteress of her husband, who does not, in my opinion, neccessarily deserve it!
One of the main things that struck me, and, I must admit, annoyed me, was the fact that she still had to little self-confidence and backbone! It's understandable that she behaves that way in Rebecca, but many years have passed, and I would think in all that time she would have come into her own, just a little, anyway! If she had any chutzpah at all she would have told Mrs. Danvers where to go!
In my opinion if you liked Rebecca the chances are pretty decent that you'll like this book as well.
Competently written, but overall a huge disappointment........2006-09-08
The second Mrs. de Winter narrates this book, as she did Daphne du Maurier's classic REBECCA, to which it professes itself the sequel. She remains otherwise nameless, and through the first half of this novel sounds very much like herself. Author Hill has du Maurier's style down cold, in fact. In that respect I was very pleased.
The novel's second half, on the other hand, kept me reading almost solely for the beauty of the writing. As Maxim de Winter and his second wife make a permanent return to England, after 10 years in voluntary exile, the characters regress alarmingly and infuriatingly. Mrs. de Winter loses all the growth she attained during the first book's events, and during her years in exile. Maxim loses the wonderful complexity that made him such an intriguing hero. Was the point to get rid of the du Maurier book's moral ambiguity? If so, Hill accomplishes this quite nicely. She has her heroine tell us repeatedly that "we make our own destiny," and she sees to it that wrong is punished in proper black-and-white terms. By the time she's through, the characters who seemed so real precisely because they had as many dimensions as flesh-and-blood people have been rendered simple, manageable, understandable...and boring.
Competently written, but overall a huge disappointment.
Changed my mind the second time.......2006-09-07
The first time I read this "sequel" years ago I was as disappointed as most of the other reader. However, I picked it up again a few days ago and started to read it again. This time it caught me up, kept me in suspense, and left me very glad I had given it a second chance.
Sure, Mrs. deWinter ( no first name) is infuriatingly spineless and insecure, but that is how she is! Maxim is a brooding, haunted soul and she devotes her dull life to keeping him appeased. It was extremely well written and I believe a first class psychological thriller. I loved Rebecca and these very flawed characters were true to the original.
The only negative was the ending. It seemed too pat and I could not quite believe it. I enjoyed the book for the writing style most of all. Very satisfying.
