ASIN: 0781731941 |
Book Description
The on-going core of this atlas is its standard of realistic illustrations that portray anatomical relationships. Photographs of actual cadaver dissections along with numerous schematic drawings aid the student in anatomic orientation. Chapters are organized by region, in order of a typical dissection. Each chapter contains two sections: a description and illustration of organs, and a depiction of those organs within the regional anatomy. New to this edition is an increase of MRI pictures, approximately 30 schematic drawings made even more precise, and an updated text where appropriate. A Brandon-Hill recommended title.
Customer Reviews:
A must for anatomy.......2007-10-03
I consider this book to be a must for any anatomy student. The pictures are exactly what you will see when you enter the lab.
love this book.......2007-03-28
In case it isn't clear from the description or title, this is an anatomy atlas made up of photos of actual human bodies. I don't know why we didn't have this in A&P. Fascinating, and a nicely produced book as well.
GREAT BOOK, EVEN GREATER IF YOU OWN ONE!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-26
AM A SECOND YEAR STUDENT OF ANATOMY, AND AM GOING INTO THE RADIOGRAPHER TECH PROGRAM AT MY SHCOOL I JUST BOUGHT THIS BOOK AFTER SEEING IT, AFTER SOMEONE BOUGHT IT. SO I ORDERED MY OWN COPY, AND AM TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY THE PERCISION OF THE BOOKS DETAIL ON EVERY SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH. I THINK THIS WILL BE A DEFINATE KEEPER, AND IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PRICE WITH A SIGH, DON'T JUST GET IT AND ENJOY!~
Also recommended: ALSO STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE COLOR ATLAS OF HUMAN ANATOMY by Wolf-Heidegger!!!!!!!!
Two sided ..........2006-03-25
My opinion about this book is a bit two sided and that's why:
I bought this one for my first year medical anatomy course and was a little mystified by it, at least at the beginning. I couldn't really understand what is going on in the corpse and as I looked into this book the sight was "cleaner" but similar. Naturally I put it away for a while and used Netter which was excellent.
A while after I became familiar with gross anatomical structures I opened it again, and only then I undestood what is going on inside, and only then I understood how great this book is!
Especially nice and logical where the drawings and explanations included.
Thus, my conclusion is that this book can be a great find for a student who has already taken the course, for a review or other purpose, but for a true beginner in this field it is almost the same as looking at the body.
In my opinion, to make an Atlas understandable for the beginner, it must NOT be real but must present the human body as seen through the eyes of the student. This job is perfectly done by Netter.
A great anatomy text.......2005-09-29
I agree completely with the review by Gerald J. Nora. The book is first rate and does a fantastic job of showing the "real" anatomy as opposed to drawings where the artist takes some liberties. The text begins simple and builds upon it. The only down side is that the labels are not ordered in a top down fashion. For example, the labels may be: 3, 2, 4, 8, 7, 6, 5 which can be confusing. Overall the book is highly recommended as a reference to a traditional anatomy text.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2003-02-10
I bought this book for first year dental. This book has the best pictures and dissections. It is very detailed yet easy to read. I highly recommend it.
A reference "must" for holistic appreciation of teeth........1998-05-29
Berkovitz and coworkers provide pictures, pictures, pictures of exquisite quality. There is no more successful method for teaching histology than through numerous sections coupled with a de-emphasis on description. This text is like having a microscope at your fingertips and pre-dental/medical and graduate students rave about the book. Given the embryological format, the macro and micro portions dovetail quite well. Some dissapointing picture quality of head and neck structures and dental gross anatomy photographs are too small to grasp occlusal morphology. The comparative mammalian dental anatomy section is nice. Missing only is exposure to forensic odontology as applied responsibility for both clinician and academician to explore.
Useful textbook for dental educators and researchers........1998-04-23
I found this text useful as a reference text as a dental educator. It is comprehensive and the color histological references are very clearly presented. The photographs of the teeth, as well as the gross anatomical sections, seem slightly out of focus in this edition. Information is presented with references that are further useful and up to date, especially when considering research in the hard dental and neural tissues. I refer to it constantly in my studies.
Informative BUT much of the comparative chapter removed!.......1998-01-10
Although more updated information has been added to the previous edition, much of the COMPARATIVE PART have been removed. This is disappointing since the chapter was the main reason I bought the book. I also found that the quality of photographs is inferior to the previous edition.

Book Description
Inverse and crack identification problems are of paramount importance for health monitoring and quality control purposes arising in critical applications in civil, aeronautical, nuclear, and general mechanical engineering. Mathematical modeling and the numerical study of these problems require high competence in computational mechanics and applied optimization. This is the first monograph which provides the reader with all the necessary information. Delicate computational mechanics modeling, including nonsmooth unilateral contact effects, is done using boundary element techniques, which have a certain advantage for the construction of parametrized mechanical models. Both elastostatic and harmonic or transient dynamic problems are considered. The inverse problems are formulated as output error minimization problems and they are theoretically studied as a bilevel optimization problem, also known as a mathematical problem with equilibrium constraints. Beyond classical numerical optimization, soft computing tools (neural networks and genetic algorithms) and filter algorithms are used for the numerical solution. The book provides all the required material for the mathematical and numerical modeling of crack identification testing procedures in statics and dynamics and includes several thoroughly discussed applications, for example, the impact-echo nondestructive evaluation technique. Audience: The book will be of interest to structural and mechanical engineers involved in nondestructive testing and quality control projects as well as to research engineers and applied mathematicians who study and solve related inverse problems. People working on applied optimization and soft computing will find interesting problems to apply to their methods and all necessary material to continue research in this field.
Customer Reviews:
Worth reading for historical insight.......2005-08-30
If published today, I would have given this book 3 stars because of the amount of contrivance it contains. But considering that it was first published in 1900, it must be given higher esteem. Historically, the study it provides of being biracial (considered Black then) and able to pass as white in the Carolinas 100 years ago is invaluable to the African American literary canon. The dilemmas faced by this ability are brilliantly portrayed in this book. I was fascinated with the dilemmas whites and "dark-skinned" blacks faced socially when dealing with the Rena and her brother. I especially enjoyed the conversation between her brother John and the town lawyer when John asks him to teach him to become a lawyer - I thought that was the most brilliantly written passage in the book.
Despite the contrivances and that it takes a bit to get into the writer's style, this was a compelling read. Though not especially likeable, the characters are interesting, complex and well-drawn.
I recommend this to anyone interested in the racial history of the South after abolition.
Incredibly engaging.......2005-02-17
I had to read this book for a Senior Seminar in English and was surprised to find that it was an entertaining read. Granted, one must suspend disbelief in a few places in order to allow for coincidences but what Chesnutt does is something of a pastiche of different writing genres. He also goes to the very limits in portraying the many gradations that existed in the Southern color line.
In truth, most of the characters are not necessarily likeable, but one cannot help turning the pages to see who will do what next. Those who chanced to pass for white were never far from an intrigue of some kind.
This is a fast read as well as an entertaining one, and while Chesnutt plays with many different styles and humors, it is not without historical merit.
Important writer, but never quite reaches mastery.......1999-12-17
I am writing a final paper on this book at the moment. Chestnutt is an important writer, but not one of the best of the period. I don't think he ever got the chance to fully mature as a writer. This book leaves me with a lot of what-ifs and whys. For example, he introduces a nephew to the heroine who appears as though he will be important, but simply drops out of the picture. The book leaves me wondering what he meant to do, and didn't have time for. It is a good read, but rather frustrating.
If you only have time to read one African American classic, I would turn you instead to Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Are Watching God" which is truly amazing!

Book Description
This is a wonderful novel and considered one of the finest novels by Chestnutt. Every page of the story makes the reader curious about what would happen next. It is the story of mulatto siblings who voyaged between white and black worlds. The portrayal of picturesque scenic beauty of American life is mesmeric. Enthralling and thought-provoking!
Book Description
The House Behind the Cedars, which many consider Charles Chesnutt’s finest novel, tells of John and Lena Walden, mulatto siblings who pass for white in the postbellum American South. The drama that unfolds as they travel between black and white worlds constitutes a riveting portrait of the shifting and intractable nature of race in American life. This edition revitalizes a much-neglected masterpiece by one of our most important African-American writers. As Werner Sollors writes, “William Dean Howells did not overstate his case when he compared Chesnutt’s works with those by Turgenev, Maupassant, and James . . . and [Chesnutt] has become one of the most important ‘crossover’ authors from the African-American tradition.”
Customer Reviews:
History personalized.......2005-06-09
This book, written at the beginning of the 1900's, looks back to a period right after the Civil War, and it explores topics that are still evolving today and will keep on evolving - race relations and relations between men and women. The author explores what happens when people are defined differently by themselves, by society, and by those close to them. It's fascinating to read this book in all its contexts - of today, the era in which it was written, and the era it covers. It's also a poignant story of dreams and gentle hopes crushed by society and by the unfeelingness of others. I found it a sad book, but also a very thought-provoking one. It has something to say to us today, though it treats another era.
