Homology: The Hierarchical Basis of Comparative Biology
ASIN: 0127300562 |
Book Description
"Almost all evolutionary biologists, indeed all biologists, use particular features to study life. Evolutionary biologists use these characteristics or features in a particular way to unravel a tangled evolutionary history, to document the rate of evolutionary change, or as evidence of biodiverisity. "Characters" are the "data" of evolutionary biology and they can be employed differently in research, providing both opportunities and limitations.
The Character Concept in Evolutionary Biology is about characters, their use, how different sorts of characters are limited, and the appropriate methods for character analysis. Leading evolutionary biologists from around the world are contributors to this authoritative review of the "character concept." Because characters and the conception of characters are central to all studies of evolution, and because evolution is the central organizing principle of biology, this book will appeal to a wide cross-section of biologists.
Focuses upon "characters"--fundamental data for evolutionary biology
Covers the myriad ways in which characters are defined, described, and distinguished
Reviews the genetic, functional, and developmental architecture of characters
Discusses the mechanisms by which new characters arise in evolution
Book Description
The Halls of Invertebrate Evolution at the American Museum of Natural History display the world's greatest fossil collection and have long been a treasured landmark in New York; they currently attract about 1.5 million visitors each year. Dinosaurs fascinate people of all ages. A look at the Museum's giant Barosaurus skeleton rising up on its hid legs to face a predator, or at the specimen of the fierce Tyrannosaurus rex, enables us to journey back in time to imagine even earlier animals that lived as long as hundreds of millions of years ago. Most fossils are not actual bones but mineralized replicas of an animal's hard parts, yet they enable us to see that vertebrate animals, including humans, share an evolutionary heritage that includes the smallest jawless fish who lived 500 million years ago as well as massive dinosaurs, and mammals of the Ice Age such as wooly mammoths and saber-toothed cats.
All of these specimens and hundreds more are collected in the spectacular, newly renovated fossil halls at the Museum. This book, liberally illustrated with beautiful new color and archival photography, and artwork and graphics produced especially for the renovated exhibits, is an in-depth look at the evolution of vertebrate animals in the collection. In an incisive, behind-the-scenes text, paleontologist Lowell Dingus discusses the earliest specimens: fish, amphibians, and primitive reptiles that represent evolutionary starting points for major groups; the popular saurischian dinosaurs, including the seventeen-ton Apatosaurus (once called Brontosaurus) skeleton; and ornithischian dinosaurs such as the horned Triceratops. He concludes with the mammal halls, where animals as diverse as the finbacked Dimetrodon, mastodons, and, after primates, our closest "next of kin"-- bats-- are shown to be related by one hole in the skull behind the eye socket. This modification illustrates the contemporary approach to evolution that readers will learn about called cladistics, which establishes animal relationships based on unique shared anatomical changes that were inherited over the course of time. The Museum galleries are organized to reflect how this approach has been used to reconstruct the family tree of vertebrate evolution: walking along the main pathway through the fossil halls is like walking along the trunk of the vertebrate evolutionary tree.
The first of the seven halls was opened in 1877 and featured ornate columns, ironworks, high ceilings, and large arched windows with spectacular views of Central Park. A ten-year restoration project has now returned the halls to their original grandeur and redesigned the fossil installations. This volume celebrates the dynamic fossil displays and the magnificent architecture of the American Museum of Natural History; it also introduces provocative questions about long-extinct species and the mysteries of life on Earth.
Customer Reviews:
Great guide to the Museum of Natural History exhibits.......1997-08-29
This is the next best thing to being there! A readable, accessible history of the Musuem of Natural History itself; or rather of its world famous halls of dinosaurs and mammals. After a multimillion dollar facelift the exhibits reflect the latest theories in vertebrate science--and there are some major revisions made. The chapter on Horses is worth the price of the book. Black and white photos of the older mounts are juxtaposed with brilliant color shots of the new, revised versions. The Apatosaurus gets a new head and longer tail, the Tyrannosaurs goes for a run, and the Horses develop in groups. The book's tone reflects the pride the Museum's staff feel in their accomplishments, and it is enough to make one book an immediate flight to New York just to see these marvels--if not 'in the flesh' at least in the round. Highly recommended

Book Description
Coral Reef Fishes is the successor of The Ecology of Fishes on Coral Reefs. This new edition includes provocative reviews covering the major areas of reef fish ecology. Concerns about the future health of coral reefs, and recognition that reefs and their fishes are economically important components of the coastal oceans of many tropical nations, have led to enormous growth in research directed at reef fishes.
Coral Reef Fishes is much more than a simple revision of the earlier volume; it is a companion that supports and extends the earlier work. The included syntheses provide readers with the current highlights in this exciting science.
Key Features
* An up-to-date review of key research areas in reef fish ecology, with a bibliography including hundreds of citations, most from the last decade
* Authoritative, up-to-date, provocative chapters written to suggest future research priorities
* An important companion and successor to The Ecology of Fishes on Coral Reefs
* Includes discussions of regulation of fish populations, dispersal or site fidelity of larval reef fishes, sensory and motor capabilities of reef fish larvae, and complexities of management of reef species and communities

Book Description
Christopher McGowan sets out to solve some of the enduring mysteries about dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptiles. He makes fascinating comparisons between living and extinct animals while presenting topics that range from gigantism to intellect. In addition to exploring the natural history of the Mesozoic Era, McGowan draws on science and engineering concepts to explain curiosities such as the similarities between the aerodynamics of pteranodons and Spitfire planes.

Knuckling down.......2006-12-01
You already know about the first seadragon, although you probably do not know you know.
Mary Anning, a girl of 11 or 12, found the first ichthyosaur to be recognized as an ancient reptile on an English beach in 1810. The tongue-twister "she sells seashells down by the sea shore" refers to her career as the first person to establish a commercial business in fossils as fossils (rather than as "dragons' teeth," which have been sold by Chinese druggists for centuries; they grind them to powder).
Although nowadays the examination of fossils is a recondite subject, the basic principles of the subject are rather easily understood -- and very commonly misunderstood.
Christopher MacGowan, curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Royal Ontario Museum and an ichthyosaur specialist, says that much of the information specialists feed to the public about dinosaurs and their allies is far overstated. 'We can begin to understand extinct animals only by understanding living ones,' writes MacGowan. And we can never understand any extinct animal as well as we can know a living one.
Thus arguments over whether some or all dinosaurs were warm-blooded or did or did not care tenderly for their young are usually excessive.
MacGowan's approach is to ask what, in principle, a particular animal could have done, based on engineering constraints. Thus a comparison to a Spitfire fighter and its World War II opponent, the Messerschmidt 109, illustrates his inquiry into how well a pterosaur could have flown -- or perhaps merely glided.
'Dinosaurs, Spitfires & Seadragons' is an engaging approach to the endlessly fascinating topic of dinosaurs (and ichthyosaurs, pterosaurs, plesiosaurs and the first birds), because MacGowan invites the reader to understand these animals at the same level the experts do -- or, he implies, sometimes don't.
The sophistication of popular books about paleontology has evolved tremendously since the days of the adventurous but simplistic tales of Roy Chapman Andrews and his dinosaur eggs from the Gobi Desert in the 1920s. MacGowan pioneered in this elevated approach, for which all dino fans can be grateful. This 1991 book is a revision of his 1983 'The Successful Dragons.'
Explains the logic of the evidence.......2000-10-27
This book is a bit different. It examines the extent of what we know, or do not know, and on the basis of what evidence. The discussion of what we can tell from teeth, or marks on the bones, etc is the meat of the book. What we can tell with high confidence and what we cannot! Very interesting indeed, and he is not afraid to say "look, this is slender eveidence for such and such a theory."
I really liked this approach.
Dinosaurs, Spitfires, and Sea Dragons.......2000-03-13
I thoroughly enjoyed this volume even though I am not really a dinosaur enthusiast. A little old (c. 1992), it is still a very readable and comprehensive text on the paleontology of dinosarus. The author covers recent findings regarding dinosaur skeletal structure and what it tells of lifestyle, their modes of locomotion and what it implies of thermoregulation, etc. The book would definitely be a valuable first line undergraduate textbook on the subject and on paleontology as a field of research. It also might interest an enthusiastic younger student even to the level of junior high as long as he or she was a reader with a sophisticated vocabulary or one with some knowledge of the discipline already.
For the person more than casually interested in dinosaurs!.......1998-11-12
This book is ideal for paleontology students or avid dinosaurphiles. Math is used extensively to demonstrate how dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures walked, ran, swam, flew, etc. The book gives a wonderful glimpse into how the hard science of paleontology is performed, instead of glossing over the math like many other popular books do. Once you finish this book, you will never look at dinosaurs the same way again.

Book Description
Here is a story that has lain dormant for seven hundred years. At first it was suppressed by one of the Plantagenet kings of England. Later it was forgotten. I happened to dig it up by accident. The accident being the relationship of my wife's cousin to a certain Father Superior in a very ancient monastery in Europe. He let me pry about among a quantity of mildewed and musty manuscripts and I came across this. It is very interesting -- partially since it is a bit of hitherto unrecorded history, but principally from the fact that it records the story of a most remarkable revenge and the adventurous life of its innocent victim -- Richard, the lost prince of England. In the retelling of it I have left out most of the history. What interested me was the unique character about whom the tale revolves -- the visored horseman who -- but let us wait until we get to him. It all happened in the thirteenth century, and while it was happening it shook England from north to south and from east to west; and reached across the channel and shook France. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Good story, bad price.......2005-11-09
Typical Burroghs story. Straightforward, predictable, two dimentional characters, but still alot of fun and an entertaining read.
But the price, 19.95? This is in the public domaine. Legally. I don't care to read from the screen and would much rather have a book, I'd pay five dollars. At twenty, I'd just download it.
Like the Princess Bride for adults..........2004-08-30
Royalty, intrigue, romance, swordfighting, religion, jealousy, honor. This book has everything, it is one of my all time favorite reads. I've never read any series by Burroughs (Tarzan, Mars, etc), but after reading two of his stand-alones (this one and "I Am A Barbarian") I think I am hooked. His writing style is wonderful, it often makes me laugh out loud while reading. If you can't think of the last time a book made you do that, give Edgar a go!
Burroughs is a masterful storyteller........2004-07-15
This has been, honestly, the first and only book that I have read of Burroughs' works -- the title was a real "stand-out" among the Tarzan books and such. It stands on its own.
Here, in this book, Burroughs demonstrates a real mastery of the stuff of knightdom, castles, and the technical stuff of medieval realms. Yet, remarkable while that truly is, it is really secondary in this absolutely superb, dramatic, hard but marvelous tale of Prince Richard -- young, naieve, unknowing in his childhood -- and DuVac -- vile, but masterful at swordsmanship and revenge.
Woven with what might be termed as some romanticism, yet not weakening the tale upon it, Burroughs portrays the life and character of Prince Richard and of all the persons whom he encountered -- including one Father Claude, a rural minister with a patient and knowing heart. With every character, there is a sense of depth and earnest person, such that I cannot imagine that many authors would be able, quite, to write-in with a tale.
The accounts of the large battles, in later chapters, are nothing sensational, and not so excessively detailed, by yet they are dramatic. The individual skirmishes, between Norman, the Outlaw of Torn and those so chanced to happen across his path -- there is more of Burroushs' mastery at work. I would barely do it justice, if endeavoring to describe more of it, myself.
Here, by Burroughs' own hand, is one great work of fiction, of real human imagination, and of the life and heart of one Prince Richard, loosed into the wilds of one tottering old England.
I will admit that the ending was shorter than I'd hoped it would be. Yet, the tale, before the ending, was more than enough to leave me without any want for criticsm of it. Burroughs, himself, must have been a masterpiece of a person. This tale is superb -- I'd found myself compelled to finish it, in one sitting.
Of what I have seen, honestly, I would have to admit that no "modern" drama even barely compares to it. I mean not to be excessive in praising it, either. It really is one marvelous work.
If only Hollywood knew about this one.........2003-10-27
I read this book in the 70s and it left it's impression on me ever since. This is a great Medieval adventure story concerning Norman, the Outlaw of Torn. The book tells the tale of the best swordsman in the world, a Frenchman who is enslaved to an English King. The Frenchman despises the King so much that he thinks up the ultimate revenge. He will steal the King's infant son Norman, and train him to be the second best sword in the world and let him kill his own father. He succeeds in the kidnapping and the child grows to manhood learning everything the Frenchman can teach him. The plans go awry as Norman befriends a Monk in the woods who teaches him Chivalry. It has been said before, but this would make a great motion picture. There is a sword fight in the book that goes on for nearly 5 pages and is one of the most exciting passages in literature that I ever read. I guess this book has been overshadowed by Burrough's more famous creations, John Carter and Tarzan, but should not be overlooked for someone looking for a great read.

Book Description
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), after a brief service in the US cavalry, persued a business career which was punctuated with intermissions as a gold miner, storekeeper, cowboy in Idaho and a police officer in Salt Lake City. He finally found success as a writer in 1914. His first novel, "Tarzan of the Apes", was an immediate success.
Even though he is famous for his Tarzan series, Burroughs also is well known for his science fiction series such as John Carter of Mars, the Land Time Forgot and other series. Burroughs also wrote a number of less well known individual novels on various topics. Quiet Vision brings you a selection of these novels.
Customer Reviews:
Elements of Robin Hood.......2003-08-06
I read virtually everything Burroughs wrote that I could lay my hands on when I was in my early teens. This one escaped me. Having finally discovered it, even at an advanced age, I can say it is one of the jewels of ERB's work. While I am partial to his series works, there are times when a single volume story is all you want to read. This is a prime candidate.
Written in 1914 and published serially, ERB makes a departure from his plot formula (at least a little) in order to write this tale of ultimate vengeance. The main character, Norman of Torn, aka Prince Richard of England, becomes the prime tool for the revenge of another. There are the usual elements of romance, but in effect this is a novel about knights and sword fights, outlaws versus nobility, chivalry versus lusts. Life was never this black and white, but it makes for good reading. I found the story to be reminiscent of both Ivanhoe and Robin Hood, and well worth the read. P-)
A great swordplay pulp novel from Edgar Rice Burroughs.......2001-06-17
Edgar Rice Burroughs is best known for his Tarzan novels and better known for his Mars, Pellucidar and other science-fiction series, but "The Outlaw of Torn" is one of his best pulp fiction yarns. It was actually the second story Burroughs wrote. Apparently the editor at "All-Story," which had published "Tarzan of the Apes," suggested ERB write it and then rejected the story when it was submitted. It was then published in five parts in "New Story Magazine" (January-May 1914), and the first book edition was published in 1927.
Burroughs begins with his standard storytelling device: the author comes across the story of Richard, the lost prince of England and tells it to his readers. Henry III of England insults Sir Jules de Vac, who takes his vengeance by kidnapping young Prince Richard. As Norman, the Outlaw of Torn, the young man becomes the greatest swordsman in England and a fearless outlaw with a price upon his head who raises an army loyal only to him. Of course, although he is ignorant of his noble birth, he is drawn to the lovely Bertrade de Montfort, daughter of the King's brother-in-law, the Earl of Leicester. This romance fits in nicely with the plans of de Vac, who contrives situations in which the king will be responsible for killing his own son. Yes, the ending is predictable, but ERB has a great sense of pacing and you have to remember that he was writing this decades before all of the Errol Flynn movies that would define the swordplay genre.
The obvious comparison for "The Outlaw of Torn" is with Robin Hood, but Burroughs' pulp novel has its own tale to tell. This really is one of his best novels and as an example of the pulp fiction of the early 20th century it is a first-class work. Keep in mind that he tended to do a lot of sequels, and they started to get rather redundant and repetitive (especially in the last half of the Tarzan novels). But "The Outlaw of Torn" stands out because as a historical novel it is unlike pretty much everything else Burroughs wrote. I read every ERB novel I could get my hands on as a kid, and "The Outlaw of Torn," in my 75 cent Ace Paperback edition with the Roy Krenkle cover, has been the one I have re-read the most.
The Dark side of Robin Hood.......2000-12-11
This book shows the dark side of Robin Hood. The main character robs and plunders castles. While the readers know that he is believing he is doing good. This book has various sub plots and the reader is completly entertained by them. This book is a short and quick reader. An average person can sit down and read this whole book in about six hours. This a great book and has all the pages of a great novel. Romance, fighting, and misunderstanding of a good, curl up around the fire place, and read till you are finished type book. I own serval versions and always looking for the books to give to friends.
A classic tale of good versus evil set in medieval England........1999-05-01
Fiction meets historical fiction in a pleasant departure from what I term "the ERB formula", The Outlaw of Torn takes place during one of the most difficult and violent times in English history. Resulting from hatred, jealousy and the continual struggle for power between King Henry III and Earl Simon De Montfort, the stage is set for a vengeful man to nurture and manipulate a child to become the most feared and ruthless warlord of his time. But, can a man live his life in constant conflict with his true nature? I first read this book in the early seventies and I've re-read it many times. It still remains my all-time favorite book. I'm tempted to send a copy to Hollywood.
A Classic Tale of War and Romance.......1999-01-27
Although one of Burroughs' greatest works, curiously this book still remains relatively unknown. Set in wild and lawless 13th Century England, "The Outlaw of Torn" details the life of a bloodthirsty outlaw who becomes one of England's noblest heroes. As this outcast from society learns life's lessons about love and war, loyalty and betrayal, and friendship and hate, the reader will be rapidly swept along by Burroughs' masterful storytelling. I've read this book at least two dozen times, and each time it gets better. "The Outlaw of Torn" has my absolute highest recommendation.

Book Description
Statement by the author: Here is a story that has lain dormant for seven hundred years. At first it was suppressed by one of the Plantagenet kings of England. Later it was forgotten.
