Analysis of the neural tissue presents unique and peculiar technical problems encountered in everyday bench work. Numerous books dealing with cellular and molecular protocols for general use in cell biology are available, but few are specifically devoted exclusively to neurobiology. Moreover, the "cross-talk" between researchers with different backgrounds, i.e. histologists, cell and molecular biologists and physiologists, is still quite difficult, and very often one remains somehow "confined" to his or her own specific field of expertise never daring to explore "mysterious" lands unless having the support of a big laboratory beyond. The general idea beyond this project was to put together the contributions from a number of well-known neuroscientists to produce a book that offers a survey of the most updated techniques for the study of nerve cells. After a long time spent doing research in the neuroscience field, and having acquired a good technical background in certain specific fields of neurobiology we have realized how difficult is to be able to step into a different technology. This book endeavors to assist in that goal.

Good laboratory manual on G protein-coupled receptor method.......2005-02-27

Laboratory manual edited by Gary B. Willars and R. A. John Chaliss. Maybe the most forthcoming limitation of this manual is it's "mission" to cover a vast array of protocols. This becomes a shortcoming because the space given for each technique and the theoretical backgrounds that substantiate them are very limited (short). Compare for instance the information on receptor binding given by Sebastian Lazareno on this book and the same author's chapter on the book edited by Tatsuya Haga. On the other hand, many of the articles are from experts in their fields and as an overall evaluation, the editors and contributors improved over the first edition witch was very limited in terms of coverage.

An Early Cross Between Rachael Ray 2, 4, 6, 8 and Rachael Ray's Open House Cookbook.......2007-03-07

Some will call this book Rachael Ray 30-Minute Meals 3. I beg to differ. In fact, Get Togethers is an earlier cross between two other superb Rachael Ray books, the recent 2, 4, 6, 8 (published in 2006) and the older Open House Cookbook (originally published in 1999 and reprinted in 2005).

What are the main differences? In the Open House Cookbook, Rachael is mostly looking at parties, holiday gatherings, and larger dinners. Since this is an early book, it leans heavily to Italian cuisine and spiced up versions of traditional American fare. In 2, 4, 6, 8, the perspective is from a couple who occasionally add 2, 4, or 6 people for some meals or don't mind having a leftover meal.

Get Togethers is also aimed at social occasions, but it has a focus more on the traditional sizes of serving 4-8. There are a few special dinners for two. Reflecting Rachael from 2003, this book is less based on Italian menus and provides more adventure in cuisines and seasonings.

If you want to throw a big party, Open House Cookbook provides more choices. If you want to do something special for two, 2, 4, 6, 8 has more choices.

I found the breakfast and brunch ranges in Get Togethers to be a limited, often built around frittatas and scrambled eggs. By comparison, the lunches are terrific for their range, imagination, and eye appeal. She also provides some excellent ways to provide snacks for cocktail parties and watching sports on television. Another section takes major holidays and provides fast ways to serve eight.

In terms of 30-minute thinking, I'm sure Rachael can do all of these menus in that amount of time. I'm also pretty sure I couldn't do any of the menus for 8 or more in 30 minutes. But I'm sure I could be done in less than an hour.

One of the best parts of the book comes in the beginning where she provides a list of prepared items you can use straight from the store and describes a number of ways to present your meal to dress up the occasion.

The book had a number of excellent menus and recipes that I recommend including:

The small, but elegant, number of photographs display lovely ways to present the recipes.

If you cannot afford to buy all three cookbooks, you'll probably find that Get Togethers will fit more of your entertaining needs than either of the others.

More delicious RR recipes in 30 minutes or less. These are presented in menu form and are delish! I have made several and people rave about the food. Most of it is pretty good for you too! No shake and bake here, folks, this is the real deal. If you want to feel like you are eating out everyday,make these recipes. They are not difficult or weird....just REALLY TASTY!

One just cannot go wrong with Rachael Ray. Talented as can be, she makes Cooking fun! I never bought recipe books while raising my children, too many ingredients (so I thought) & too much work with them running around. NOT SO! The Mother/Father of today can zip up a great meal fast with the children running around with Rachaels recipe's. Try it:-) betcha like it! Jeannie!

More fine, quick recipes from one of my favorite cooks. Rachel knows how to reduce a recipe to its basics without compromising the taste. On the day it arrived, we found a recipe that had to be shared -- the Chili Casserole. I look forward to trying most of the others. I go back to Rachel Ray's cookbooks time and again -- many of her recipes have become standards in my cooking. But she can sure multi-task! I rarely do one up in thirty minutes until I have done it several times.

An excellent book for the understanding of gait in dogs. It allows a untrained person to understand and see gait faults that may be potential problems for the dog later. And absolute must for anyone planning to show or breed dogs and also useful for the any potential owner in picking out a new pet.

Not a bad book on U.S. architecture - the best part is the focus on details which can give the viewer visual clues as to the probable history and or origin of a house long after the structure may have been remodelled. The focus on vernacular architecture is also apprecieated as there are more small family homes on a budget in this country than there are big ostentatious mansions built by people with more money then sense and or taste.

An Ambitious Field Guide to Domestic Architecture.......2005-07-31

Although the illustrations in this book are not as beautiful as the ones in Lester Walker's "American Homes", this book is very ambitious in its presentations. Many field guides to American homes concentrate solely on identifying a style. Usually, there are only a few brief descriptions of the architectural details that help define a style.

What makes "The Visual Diction of American Domestic Architecture" such a pleasure is the sheer ambition of its coverage. Not only are there detailed descriptions of building exteriors, there are also detailed desciptions of interior features. As an example, not many field guides detail interior framing plans or such important features like staircases and fireplaces. If that were not enough, there are also some representative floor plans.

I have been collecting field guides for a number of years and this is one of the best. If you want to go beyond picking out key features of a distinct architectural style and want to delve deeper into building details, this is the book for you. Highly recommended.

Real McCoy!.......2004-03-05

I guess it isn't an easy thing to compose an illustrative guide on such complicated and multilayered portion of Architecture as American domestic styles, but all are included here: easily recognizable types, details, even construction methods! Special thanks to the Illustrator: the pictures are neither "overillustrated" nor of too "academic" appearance - just restrained professional still artistic graphic. As an international Architect often working for an American architectural firm I will surely make use of it.

Not comprehensive enough in scope to be a true dictionary of architectural style, but certainly provides the visual images necessary to recognize the styles. Included floor plans also demonstrate the various modes. Good survey of vernacular styles, often overlooked in other texts.

One must make allowences for the occasional sloppiness of Trollope's writing, given the serialized format and the incredible number of novels he wrote while working full-time for the post office. He always has something important to say and usually says it well. This novel is one of his shortest and one of his best. Like George Elliot and Charles Dickens, Trollope was dragged kicking and screaming into industrialized England in the 19th century. And, like them, he saw beneath the glitz and glamor of new-found wealth and the breakdown in social classes that followed the Reform movement in England. He seems at times to be overly preoccupied with the demise of the "lady" and the "gentleman," but this concern reveals a well-founded alarm over the vanishing of such Victorian values as "nobility" and "duty to others." In this novel he expresses many of those concerns while targetting the Evangelicals, an attack that is right-on and timely indeed. He reveals the hypocrisy of so many of those who are filled with resentment and hatred of their fellow humans while professing to bask in the love of Christ.
I would rate this novel, alongside The Warden, as first-rate and excellent ways to come to Anthony Trollope, who is, in my view, a vastly under-rated writer, despite his flaws.

Read anything else by Trollope before this..........2005-03-21

Rachel Ray is (IMHO) the least of Trollope's longer works. Set in a pleasant country town, with a terribly pleasant cast of characters, the novel is, well, ..... pleasant .... without ever offering anything more for the reader. I suppose there are some who would say that Trollope's genius was to write a work that was as pleasant as its setting, but after seeing how good he is at social novels (e.g., The American Senator, The Way We Live Now) and more excitingly peopled romances (e.g., The Claverings) this book was, for me at least, a real let-down. The plot involves a young girl who is certain of the affections of her suitor even when (highly contrived) circumstances make it appear to all around her that he is, in fact, a jilt. Don't read this next sentence if you plan on reading the book: Surprise! Little Rachel was right all along and her lover in fact marries her. *YAWN!*

Along the way, there are a lot of fairly typical Trollopian subplots dealing with country families putting on town airs, modernization of the brewing industry, and other fun stuff that does illuminate nineteenth-century country life for the twenty-first-century reader. But none of it is particularly compelling, at least not for me.

Bottom line: I adore Trollope and have read most of his output, but if I were to rank his works Rachel Ray would be near, or even at, the bottom.
