          Book Description

Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry will relate recent developments and new exciting approaches in supramolecular chemistry. In supramolecular chemistry, our aim is to understand the molecular chemistry beyond the covalent bond—the series will concentrate on goal-orientated supramolecular chemistry. Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry will reflect research which develops supramolecular structures with specific new properties, such as recognition, transport and simulation of biosystems or new materials. The series will cover all areas from theoretical and modelling aspects through organic and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry to materials, solid-state and polymer sciences, reflecting the many and varied applications of supramolecular structures in modern chemistry. The Lock and Key Principle The State of the Art—100 Years on Edited by Jean-Paul Behr Published 100 years after Emil Fischer first proposed the lock-and-key principle, this volume provides a complete review of the subject to date and offers suggestions for further research. The major impact of the lock-and-key principle on the chemical, biomedical and materials sciences is discussed by leaders in the field, with chapters dedicated to molecular recognition, nucleic acid and protein chemistry, crystallography and the development of Emil Fischer’s initial ideas. The Lock-and-Key Principle is the most up-to-date review of progress in supramolecular chemistry and the lock-and-key principle, and will become the essential guide to the past, present and future of this remarkable idea. The interdisciplinary nature of this topic is highlighted in The Lock-and-Key Principle ensuring that this volume is essential reading for chemists, molecular biologists, biochemists and materials scientists working in the areas of molecular recognition, enzymology, immunology, protein and nucleic acid chemistry, crystallography, bioinorganic and bioorganic chemistry and supramolecular chemistry.

            Book Description

This volume describes high-throughput approaches to a series of robust, established methodologies in molecular genetic studies of population samples. Such developments have been essential not only to linkage and association studies of single-gene and complex traits in humans, animals and plants, but also to the characterisation of clone banks, for example in mapping of genomes. Chapters have been written by developers or highly experienced end-users concerned with a diverse array of biological applications. The book should appeal to any researcher for whom costs and throughput in their genetics laboratory have become an issue.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Literature Guide for Christians.......2005-07-30

QUESTION: Should Christian young people be exposed to classical works depicting various worldviews against our belief system? If they are not, how will they be prepared with a ready answer and be well-educated to culturally important works?
                                  ANSWER: Peter Leithart

Leithart enters the debate with an excellent resource for the education of Christian young people. He takes "important" classical works and examines them by practically contrasting them against the Biblical worldview. I use the word "important" as a term meaning that the philosophies in these works dramatically impacted worldview shifts in the course of history. By contrasting these thoughts to the Biblical truths, Leithart assists in preparing young adults to give a defense for the "hope that is within them."

Leithart also brings excellent literary information, as well. He examines literary devices and references other well-known works as part of the study.

5 out of 5 stars Good Christian Guide to Pagan Literature.......2000-06-18

This book, put simply, is a good guide to the ancient Greek and Roman literature from a biblical worldview. Leithart goes through the works, from Hesiod to Virgil, keeping his eye on both the Christian implications of the work and the literary structure. This book is an excellent resource, whether you are looking for biblical or literary teaching on these ancient epics. It's good not only for school teachers but for the rest of us as well.

This Blackwell Guide provides a broad-ranging introduction to ancient Greek drama, which flourished principally in Athens from the sixth to the third century bc. All three genres of Greek drama are discussed - tragedy, comedy, and satyr play - as well as the five surviving playwrights - Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Menander, together with brief entries on lost playwrights. The Guide also addresses contextual issues, such as: the origins of the dramatic art forms; the conventions of the festivals, the theater, and the performers; the relationship between drama and the worship of Dionysos; the political dimension; and how to read and watch Greek drama. The final section consists of 46 one-page synopses of each of the surviving plays.

This is a book that mostlikely would not repeat itself in the world today. It teaches us to accepte the authority and accept the errors of judgement.

What I liked about this was that there was so much of it. "Pocket Guide" might make you think of something glib and superficial but the book is 384 pages long - really generous measure - and there are lots of quotations which really help as well. The style is accessible and it deals with 40 plays in quite amazing detail, plus biographies of the playwrights and the social and political background too. The author seems to know his stuff but more importantly seem to enjoy knowing it and is able to make others enjoy it too. I imagine the book is really meant to be something to be dipped into but I found myslef just reading on and on, anxious to find out what the next play would be like. Fascinating stuff.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2006-04-24

I thought this was excellent - clear, engaging, up-to-the-minute and packed with information.. It made me think again about the plays I thought I knew and made me want to rush off and read those I didn't. Not speaking Greek, I found the guide to translations especially useful. The author quotes from the 2 or 3 best versions of each play so readers can make up their own minds about which they like best. Can you fit all you need to know about Greek and Roman drama into your pocket? You can now.

                                            Book Description

In his introduction Harold Bloom states that, together with the Bible, the Iliad "represents the foundation of Western literature, thought, and spirituality." The piece is the focus of this title in our Bloom's Notes series. Along with a collection of some of the best criticism available on the work, this text includes a structural and thematic analysis, an index of themes and ideas, and more. This series is edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University; Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Professor of English, New York University Graduate School. These texts are the ideal aid for all students of literature, presenting concise, easy-to-understand biographical, critical, and bibliographical information on a specific literary work. Also provided are multiple sources for book reports and term papers with a wealth of information on literary works, authors, and major characters.

This wonderful little book represents the work of a number of noted scholars, and was edited together by author and professor of English and the Humanities, Harold Bloom. It gives the reader a great introduction into the Iliad, and even gives you a better understanding of it if you have read the story. The book begins with a biography of Homer, and excellent thematic and structural analysis of the story, a handy list of characters, a collection of some eighteen (if I counted correctly) critical views (analyses of the Iliad, Homer or other relevant topics), a list of English and Greek editions of Homer's works, a list of works about Homer and the Iliad, and finally an index of themes and ideas (useful).

This is a great book for anyone who wishes to understand the Iliad at all, or just more thoroughly. Personally, I enjoyed the critical views the best. I found this to be an excellent resource, and I highly recommend it to you.

Hektor of Trojans kills Achilleus' closse friend (4got his name) and decides to get revenge and kills Hektor. All of this pretty much progresses into the fall of Troy.

This book is a collection of essays about the book. It helps a lot for understanding the diffucult author, Homer. However, it contains no summaries for review or for when you simply did not read. Go for Barron's if that's what you want.
