          Book Description

This second edition of the “Encyclopedia of Drugs, Alcohol, and Addictive Behavior” reflects changes in the attitudes about, use, and knowledge of drugs and alcohol since the first edition published in 1995. These changes include the decrease of crack cocaine use and resurgence of heroin use; changes in laws dealing with drug use (on both the state and national levels), and new discoveries leading to a better understanding of how drugs work and what makes them addictive. More than 700 articles, written for both the student and layperson, cover the social, medical and political issues related to drugs and alcohol, as well exploring and explaining types of addiction.

            Book Description

This volume provides a systematic examination of Lagrange-type functions and augmented Lagrangians. Weak duality, zero duality gap property and the existence of an exact penalty parameter are examined. Weak duality allows one to estimate a global minimum. The zero duality gap property allows one to reduce the constrained optimization problem to a sequence of unconstrained problems, and the existence of an exact penalty parameter allows one to solve only one unconstrained problem.
By applying Lagrange-type functions, a zero duality gap property for nonconvex constrained optimization problems is established under a coercive condition. It is shown that the zero duality gap property is equivalent to the lower semi-continuity of a perturbation function.
In particular, for a type of kth power penalty functions, this book obtains an analytic expression of the least exact penalty parameter and establishes that a fairly small exact penalty parameter can be achieved. As shown by numerical experiments, this property is very important for some global methods of Lipschitz programming, otherwise ill conditioning may occur.
Audience: The book is suitable for researchers in mathematical programming and optimization and postgraduate students in applied mathematics.

            Book Description

Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso, 43 BCE-17 CE), born at Sulmo, studied rhetoric and law at Rome. Later he did considerable public service there, and otherwise devoted himself to poetry and to society. Famous at first, he offended the emperor Augustus by his Ars Amatoria, and was banished because of this work and some other reason unknown to us, and dwelt in the cold and primitive town of Tomis on the Black Sea. He continued writing poetry, a kindly man, leading a temperate life. He died in exile.

Ovid's main surviving works are the Metamorphoses, a source of inspiration to artists and poets including Chaucer and Shakespeare; the Fasti, a poetic treatment of the Roman year of which Ovid finished only half; the Amores, love poems; the Ars Amatoria, not moral but clever and in parts beautiful; Heroides, fictitious love letters by legendary women to absent husbands; and the dismal works written in exile: the Tristia, appeals to persons including his wife and also the emperor; and similar Epistulae ex Ponto. Poetry came naturally to Ovid, who at his best is lively, graphic and lucid.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Ovid is in six volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Mythology becomes 'real'........2006-01-16

Publius Ovidius Naso was born in 43 B.C. and died in 18 A.D.
Emperor Augustus banished him - for unknown reasons - to Tomi ( a barren place near the coast of the Black Sea ). A few scholars believe that this was a literary hoax created by Ovidius himself.

With 'Heroides' ( Legendary Women ) Ovidius goes against the tradition where only men were allowed to complain in literary fiction about their ill fortune and human cruelty.
These women are all characters from the greek mythology like Briseis (Trojan war), Hermione the daughter of Helen and even Sappho as heroine in the legend where she commits suicide by jumping from a cliff into the sea.

Ovidius turned these women from rather abstract mythological characters into 'real' persons who could be recognized as such by the audience or the readers of Ovidius' work

I recommend this interesting book for everyone who is intersted in the "classical Greek & Roman world". However, I prefer to read it in the original Greek texts. And if you don't read the ancient Greek language well, I suggest you to read a volume(no.225) of the Loeb Classical Library.

              Book Description

In this volume, Professor Knox provides the first full-scale commentary in English in this century on a selection from Ovid's Heroides, a collection of letters in elegiac verse supposedly addressed by heroines of mythology to their absent lovers or husbands. This edition is intended to provide students of Latin literature with guidance in the interpretation of these poems. The Introduction also includes a general account of Ovid's career and the place of the Heroides in the development of Augustan poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Great prof, better book.......2004-07-11

Of course if you don't read Latin you don't want to read this book, that is what it is for! The epistles are well selected and the commentary is right on...exactly what I would expect of Knox.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook!.......2001-02-16

My Latin class is using this text this quarter, and we find it excellent. It includes a large introduction with explanations of the myths involved, and which tells about Ovid's life. The book also includes many, many notes that give suggested translations for difficult lines and explain ambiguous references. The text includes Heroides letters 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, and the "incerti auctoris epistula Sapphus ad Phaonem". Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Caveat Lector! Translation: Reader Beware!.......2000-11-29

Readers should note that if you do not read Latin (and I don't), you will not be able to read the actual epistles in this book - only the introduction and the commentary. Since I will have to order another version of the Heroides to actually read the ancient text, I cannot yet comment on the English commentary included in this book! I am giving it a two for now.

5 out of 5 stars A useful and intelligent commentary.......1999-05-24

This commentary is erudite and insightful, full of information that is useful to scholars of all levels. What a fantastic book!

                  Book Description

This is an edition with commentary of six poems by the Roman poet Ovid. These are the letters, as Ovid imagined them, exchanged between three famous pairs of lovers, Paris and Helen of Troy, Hero and Leander, and Acontius and Cydippe. Interest in Ovid has never been more lively than it is today, and this book will have much to offer students at all levels. This is the first commentary in any language since 1898 on these "double" letters. It complements Peter E. Knox's selection of the single epistles in the same series.

                    Book Description

In the Heroides, the Roman poet Ovid wittily plucks fifteen abandoned heroines from ancient myth and literature and creates the fiction that each woman writes a letter to the hero who left her behind. But in giving voice to these heroines, is Ovid writing like a woman, or writing "Woman" like a man?
Using feminist and psychoanalytic approaches to examine the "female voice" in the Heroides, Sara H. Lindheim closely reads these fictive letters in which the women seemingly tell their own stories. She points out that in Ovid’s verse epistles all the women represent themselves in a strikingly similar and disjointed fashion. Lindheim turns to Lacanian theory of desire to explain these curious and hauntingly repetitive representations of the heroines in the "female voice." Lindheim’s approach illuminates what these poems reveal about both masculine and feminine constructions of the feminine

                        Book Description

This is the first book-length study to reconstruct the experiences of the abandoned heroines of the Heroides, which have been largely ignored by past criticism. Dr Spentzou seeks ways to isolate, characterize, and release the female voice and experience within Ovid's male-authored text. Building on a wide range of ancient as well as modern images and reflections on gender and writing, the book attempts to map the relationship between gendered sensitivities and experience and generic expression and choices. Dr Spentzou uses the insight gained by the boom of intertextual studies in recent Latin scholarship to go a step further and address explicitly the ideologies of intertextual studies. This is a book about readers and reading, just as much as about women and gender, and it is also an in-depth study of the intricate and heated negotiations behind the interpretative act.
