Book Description
Mexican architect Luis Barragan (1902-88) was one of the twentieth century’s most creative designers and one of its best-known architects. Self-taught, he achieved international renown for his remarkable personal artistic vision. Using vegetation, water, primary geometric forms, and vivid colors, Barragan created a poetic and painterly yet elegantly simple architectural style that transformed the Mexican building tradition into an abstract architectural language.
This revised edition of our best-selling monograph – the first comprehensive compilation of Barragan’s work (102 buildings and 12 additional projects) – contains new photographs and an updated bibliography. Its intelligent analyses and superb illustrations demonstrate the complexity and scope of this genius, as both an architect and a landscape designer.
Barragan – The Complete Works collects over 300 illustrations including Barragan’s drawings; photographs of his work; re-drawn plans, elevations, and scale models of important projects; texts by Alvaro Siza, Antonio Toca, and J. M. Buendia, as well as an essay by Barragan himself; and an unabridged transcription of his Pritzker Prize acceptance speech. this book is the essential compendium on the work of this great master architect.

Nice price and fast delivery. I could not ask for more.
Thank you very much indeed!
Not what it could be........2006-02-17
For a book titled The Complete Works, this book visually falls short. Many of the pictures are smaller and in black and white - not providing enough photos to be a really valuable visual research tool.
Barragan: The Complete Works.......2003-12-17
I extolled the first edition of this definitive, splendidly illustrated survey when it appeared in 1996, and urge you to add it to your shelves if you haven't already. Luis Barragan (1902-88) was a master of earthy yet sophisticated buildings that had nothing to do with style and look better with every year that passes. This revised edition is little changed, but for an update of the bibliography and a perceptive essay by Antonio Ruiz Barbarin, from which I learned that Barragan was an almost exact contemporary of Marcel Breuer, Lucio Costa, Arne Jacobsen, and Ivan Leonidov. Truly a vintage year! (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
be inspired.......2000-05-11
for a sensitive humane and theatrical perception of space color and interaction of mater and living creatures is the legacy of a great muster, his buildings as elements of a living construction interact with the elements of life, viewing the composition is relaxing and inspiring.
Great photographs of works by Mexico's Greatest Architect........1998-08-24
Luis Barragan's gift to twentieth-century architecture is inspiring. His impressive sensitivity, simplicity, and masterful use of color, was captured here for generations of architects to enjoy.

Barragan... Not only a photogenic architect!.......2000-06-14
Martinez write a very interesting books comparing to others about barragan... The reason is that beside beautiful pictures (they are also wonderful in this books), we can understand the context: artistic, geographic or politics, which make evolve his architecture, At the end of the books there are a full chronological list of his project with text and photography.
Book Description
Luis Barragán (Guadalajara 1902-Mexico City 1988), one of Mexico's leading architects, is now accepted as a great master of the Modern Movement. The poetic images of his houses and gardens, of the walls and fountains so characteristic of his work have all become icons of modern Mexican architecture. His masterpieces are famous for their innovative use of colour and for their reduced and abstract formal language. They harmoniously combine the modern and the traditional, nature and architecture giving results which, although closely linked to the context in which they were born, also assume international relevance. For the first time since Luis Barragán passed away, the wealth of drawings, documents and original photographs in his archives--now conserved at the Barragan Foundation in Switzerland--has been made available to a group of scholars of international standing and studied systematically. The essays collected in this volume are the result of intense scrutiny of the Barragán Archives and the many public and private collections in Mexico, Europe and the USA. Accompanid by outstanding visual representations, they present a fresh evaluation of Barragán's personality and his work--which managed to quietly interpret the revolutionary aspects of Modern architecture.
Book Description
Luis Barragan is an icon of contemporary architecture-a genius of color, light, walls, the garden, the tower, the rooftop, he has influenced an entire generation of current architects, not least of them his one-time collaborator Ricardo Legorreta. Admirers of his work note its serenity, its harmony. In 1979, when Barragan was presented the Pritzker Prize, his work was referred to as "a sublime act of the poetic imagination." It is this aspect of Barragan's work that is presented in The Life and Work of Luis Barragan, a biographical portrait that reveals Barragan as a master of what he himself called "emotional architecture."
Barragan's impressions and influences are recorded here, from his early years in Gudalajara to his work in Mexico City, and his highly inspiring travels in the Alhambra, the villages of Greece, and northern Africa. His rejection of the concepts of Le Corbusier and the International Style, and his embrace of the ideas of the French intellectual, painter, and landscape architect Ferdinand Bac provided valuable framework for understanding both the theory and form of Barragan's oeuvre.
Brilliant color photographs record Barragan's vibrant work as it has never been seen before, including generous interior shots of such varied projects as Casa Cristo in Guadalajara, and Casas Galvez, Egerstrom, and Meyer, all from his Mexico City years. Barragan was perhaps first and foremost a landscape architect, and this book spotlights his gardens, and his vanguard, landscape-based approach to architecture itself-centered on the close relationship between landscape, color, and architecture in Mexico and the other lands that inspired him.
Text and photographs combine in The Life and Work of Luis Barragan for a personal and evocative portrayal of the Mexican master that will fascinate everyone familiar with his legacy, and intrigue those who are only just discovering the power and influence of his work.
Customer Reviews:
Different approach to an unknown Barragan.......2006-11-04
The book is full of highly artistic and unique photos, taken at different seasons and through many years, showing an unknown side of Barragan, far away from other books or writings. It was written by authors that knew Barragan personally, fact that enhances its uniqueness and versatility.
Good effort but there's a better alternative.......2000-06-18
If readers are looking for a concise book on Luis Barragan, this book is NOT it. Rather, you are urged to look at Luis Barragan: The Complete Works which not only have architecture pictures but also detailed discussions by few academics & even Luis Barragan acceptance speech of his winning of the prestigious Pultizer prize. But if readers are just a pedestrian reader on architecture like me, you would appreciate this book for it contains beautiful photography (sometimes, pictures of the same thing taken from different angles) & GENERAL discussions upon Luis' refusal to conform to any particular architecture movements but rather following his vision of how an architecture should be depicted. He's not only an architect but an architect & artist combined, a sensible & faithful individual to his culture, core values. The readers are also given a quick overview of his exit from Guadalajara & his rising from ashes in Mexico, inspirations that he attained from his trip to the Meditarrenean & Africa (namely Morroco), his relationships & eventual downfall with artists that he worked with. Overall, a good effort but superficial for the academics.
Book Description
A beautifully produced 'best of' Barragan's creations. This Mexicanarchitect, famous for his use of colour and his love of gardens, believed that 'human life' refers to the sum total of physical, vegetative, instinctive, and spiritual functions. Architecture had to satisfy all those needs. Some thirteen projects by Barragan are extensively photographed and give an impression of the way he gave concrete form to this ideology.

Great architecture seen through great images........1997-06-23
Portugal's photographs of Lois Barragan's unique and timeless buildings are some of the best architectural photography I have ever seen. The majority of books on architects destroy the essence and soul of great designs due to poor, cold, and lifeless images. In this book, the images and the buildings within them raise each other to a higher level. Excellent choice for anyone interested in Modernism and Mexican architecture
Book Description
The name Luis Barragan evokes images of Latin American modernism-brightly colored plain surfaces set off against lush foliage. His 1,250-acre Gardens of El Pedregal, begun in 1945 on the lava fields of south of Mexico City, were dotted with houses and plazas, fountains and ponds, cacti and pepper trees. Barragan considered El Pedregal his most important project, and critics have described the houses and gardens there as a turning point in Mexican architecture. This book examines El Pedregal's program and form, its representation in architect-commissioned photographs and advertising, and its place within contemporary discourses on cultural identity, design and place, and suburbanization. Like our highly acclaimed Revolution of Form, Luis Barragan's Gardens of El Pedregal offers an in-depth analysis of this now mostly destroyed project through original documents, drawings, color and black-and-white photography, and critical examinations of the design process.

Luis Barragan's Gardens of El Pedregal.......2001-10-25
This is a remarkable book, engaging and forceful, scrupulously researched and boldly imaginative. Keith Eggener's reading of Barragan's Gardens probes the crucial area of cultural studies with energy and precision, offering a sizable number of fresh ideas and unsuspected connections. A rare achievement; Eggener's study is not only an impressive and welcome contribution to the field of Modern architecture, but also a great pleasure to read.

The Spirit of Luis Barragan.......2005-12-06
This small book is a great realisation of the spirit contained within the architecture of Luis Barragan. If one thing can be said, it allows us to see what Luis saw, and not necessarily what he did, the theme of which defined a quote that was included in the book. Rene Burri has done a great job of allowing us to see what Luis saw and give us an introduction to the essential nature of his architecture. It is a book whose simplicity allows the characteristics of poetry and beauty to be conveyed in a decidedly rich manner without the need for an overabundance of photographs. Barragan seemed to be more concerned about the spirit of his architecture than the architecture itself and this book cetainly conveys that. Top Stuff!
A Barragan "Teaser" At Best.......2001-10-25
This is a short, quirky little book, that reads more like a short book of poetry than a book on architecture or on the great architect luis barragan. It does have a few enticing pictures of his works and a few lines that offer insights into barragan's character. But it's hardly a definitive or essential work. Barragan fanatics probably want it for the collection. Fans but non-fanatics should look elsewhere.
Good, Not Great.......2000-06-17
There are some very beautiful photographs and thought abstactions from the master, but this is not specifically an architectural peice of literature, as I expected it to be. It does capture some intriguing spacial conditions, but the artistic context appears in more of photographical context.
Absolutely stunning book!.......2000-05-28
If you are interested in works by Mexican architects, like the recent AIA award winner Legorreta, this book is a must-have. It's filled with beautiful photographs of Barragan's works. The book is an artwork by itself. Phaidon scores again!
