          Book Description

Multicellular organisms require a means of intracellular communication to organize and develop the complex body plan that occurs during embryogenesis and then for cell and organ systems to access and respond to an ever changing environmental milieu. Mediators of this constant exchange of information are growth factors, neurotransmmitters, peptide and protein hormones which bind to cell surface receptors and transduce their signals from the extracellular space to the intracellular compartment. Via multiple signaling pathways, receptors of this general class affect growth, development and differentiation. Smaller hydrophobic signaling molecules, such as steroids and non-steroid hormones, vitamins and metabolic mediators interact with a large family of nuclear receptors. These receptors function as transcription factors affecting gene expression, to regulate the multiple aspects of animal and human physiology, including development, reproduction and homeostasis.
The aim of this book is to cover various aspects of intracellular signaling involving hormone receptors.

                            Book Description

This volume consists mainly of refereed papers and surveys presented at the 1994 Padova Conference `Abelian Groups and Modules', augmented by a few contributions specifically written for this publication. Linking three main areas in algebra, namely Abelian groups, commutative algebra and modules over non-commutative rings, it gives an excellent survey of current trends as well as state-of-the-art results in specific research topics. Subjects covered include: representation theory, Hopf modules, Krull dimension, dualities, finitistic dimension, algebraically compact modules, von Neumann regular rings, serial rings, reflexive algebras, endomorphism rings, Butler groups, torsion-free Abelian groups, and totally projective groups. Audience: Graduate students and researchers in algebra.

                                Book Description

This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Abelian Groups and Modules held at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland, from August 10 until August 14, 1998. The meeting brought together more than 50 researchers and graduate students from 14 countries around the world. In a series of eight invited survey talks, experts in the field presented several active areas of research, including:

                                · Almost completely decomposable abelian groups, Butler groups and almost free groups – the classification problem, and invariants of special classes of torsion-free abelian groups.
                                · Totally projective groups, their automorphism groups and their group rings – questions about unique passage between these categories.
                                · Radicals commuting with products.
                                · The Ziegler spectra of Neumann regular rings and the class (semi-) groups of Prüfer domains.
                                · The Krull-Schmidt property for valuation domains.

These main talks were accompanied by many other presentations of current research on abelian groups and modules. Methods from model theory, category theory, infinite combinatorics, representation theory, classical algebra and geometry were applied to the study of abelian groups and modules; conversely, results and methods from abelian group theory were applied to general module theory and non-commutative groups.

All this is reflected in the 30 articles in this volume, which introduce the reader to an active and attractive part of algebra that over the years has gained much from its position at the crossroads of mathematics. Lively discussions at the conference influenced the final work on the presented papers, which convey some sense of the intellectual ferment they generated and stimulate the reader to consider and actively investigate the topics and problems contained therein.

                                    Book Description

This volume presents the proceedings from the conference on Abelian Groups, Rings, and Modules (AGRAM) held at the University of Western Australia (Perth). Included are articles based on talks given at the conference, as well as a few specially invited papers. The proceedings are dedicated to Professor László Fuchs. The book includes a tribute and a review of his work by his long-time collaborator, Professor Luigi Salce.

Four surveys from leading experts follow Professor Salce's article. They present recent results from active research areas:

Error correcting codes as ideals in group rings,

                                    Duality in module categories,

Automorphism groups of abelian groups, and

Generalizations of isomorphism in torsion-free abelian groups.

In addition to these surveys, the volume contains 22 research articles in diverse areas connected with the themes of the conference. The areas discussed include abelian groups and their endomorphism rings, modules over various rings, commutative and non-commutative ring theory, varieties of groups, and topological aspects of algebra. The book offers a comprehensive source for recent research in this active area of study.

                                        Book Description

Featuring contributions from leading international experts, Abelian Groups, Rings, and Modules, and Homological Algebra presents an introduction to this newly developing field. It reviews basic results from homological and commutative algebra, considering Gorenstein rings from a homological point of view and providing examples of Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings. It develops relative homologica algebra and shows how Tate cohomology arises from the connection between Gorenstein homological algebra and usual variety. The final three chapters look at torsion-free Abelian groups, modular representations and the properties of universal enveloping algebras, and indicate directions for future research.

                                            4 out of 5 stars The irony!.......2001-10-11

Northanger Abbey was a very entertaining novel. The heroine, Catherine Morland, is a very mediocre but charming girl whose only wish in life is to have an exciting Gothic adventure, which of course will end up with herself saving the day. Like Austen's other work, it is entertainingly ironic, mainly due to the idea that throughout the entire story, Catherine creates the most Gothic of Gothic mysteries out of a situation that is completely normal. Catherine's innocence and amiability are completely captivating, proving that a good heroine need not be particularly witty or mysterious or in any way alluring. It is, on the whole, a very light, entertaining novel.
Persuasion is also very entertaining, but it has a more solid conflict. The heroine, Anne Elliot, is a really wonderful person, which irritatingly is only apparent to the reader and one or two other characters. Anne faces a dreadful situation when she is confronted by her former fiance, whom she chucked on the mistaken advice of her best friend, but still loves deeply. Personally, I was really in suspense nearly the entire time as to how it would turn out, because the entrance of Anne's cousin, Mr. Elliot, hints at an attachment with him. It' s a well-written and of course ironic and well worth reading if you remotely enjoy Austen's style.
