Book Description
Take a close look at a wave-battered coast and you will discover a rich, fascinating, and remarkably brutal environment. Here, animals and plants exposed to wind, sun, and rain at low tide must cope with crashing waves as the seas rise to submerge them each day at high tide. How do living things survive in this harsh zone? With 87 stunning color photographs and an engaging text written for those with little or no knowledge of marine biology or physics, this book tells the story of one stretch along the Pacific coast of North America--introducing the mussels, limpets, crabs, grasses, starfish, kelp, and other animals and plants that live there, and explaining how they function and flourish in an environment of waves, sand, and rocks.
In pictures and words, Wave-Swept Shore explains complex phenomena, such as wave action, using simple, intuitive analogies. It explores how the forms of animals and plants affect their survival in this harsh environment, considers their distribution on the shore, and looks at their seasonal variations, focusing on what can be easily observed by visitors to the coast. Revealing the rich variety of habitats woven into what may at first look like a fairly uniform environment, the book, an effective and beautiful tool for learning about the edge of oceans everywhere, opens our eyes to the wonders of rocky shores and introduces a whole new way of looking at the natural world.

An honor and pleasure to read..........2006-05-25
This book eminates respect for the natural ecosystems of our shorelines. Visually it left me in awe. I frequently walk the Oregon coastlines and the detailed images are causing me to take a closer look... I am equally eager to explore the text at deeper levels. We are purchasing a copy for evening reading at our beach house and anticipate that it will become a fabulous gift for all those on our list who share our passion for the sea...highly recommended *****

Book Description
This is an introduction to the study of marine rocky shores in the temperate zone. It is designed to encourage students and others to couple enormous intellectual rewards with the pleasure of working in some of the last easily accessible but relatively unspoilt places, and can be used as a basis for field courses, project work, or for lectures. Centred in North-West Europe, but using examples from all over the world, the book begins by considering the physical factors that characterize the habitat - primarily tides and waves - and goes on to assess how they influence the organisms that live within it. It describes how the behaviour and physiology of individuals belonging to the major groups - algae, grazers, suspension feeders, and predators - are affected by their habitat, how their communities are structured, and discusses theories of community organization. For field courses, it suggests experiments and observations that can be carried out on the shore or in nearby laboratories. Finally, problems of pollution and conservation are considered in the context of their effects upon biodiversity.

Book Description
Monitoring changes in the intertidal zone of rocky shores has never been more critical. This sensitive habitat at the interface of land and ocean may well be the marine equivalent of the canary in a coal mine as we advance into an era of global climate change. This handbook describes effective methods and procedures for monitoring the ecological and environmental status of these areas. Written by three collaborating authors with extensive field experience, it provides critical discussions and evaluation of the various sampling techniques and field procedures for studies of intertidal macroinvertebrates, seaweeds, and seagrasses. Rather than prescribing standard protocols or procedures, the authors break down the decision-making process into various elements so investigators can become aware of the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a particular method or approach. Chapters discuss topics such as site selection, field sampling layouts and designs, selection of sampling units, nondestructive and destructive methods of quantifying abundance, and methods for measuring age, growth rates, size, structure, and reproductive condition.

Along A Rocky Shore: Non-fiction with "voice".......2000-06-06
I am a second grade teacher who used this book for shared reading. First I read it aloud to my students. I scanned some pages and projected them onto my T.V. screen. I also enlarged the text so everyone could see and read with me.
My students and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is a special kind of non-fiction, one that deals mostly with facts, but expresses opinions in a subtle way, ie. "...graceful sea lions", "...air smells fresh and salty...", etc. We used the text and practiced writing eyewitness accounts by adding more opinions and feelings. The phrases in the book, which were all very inviting, facilitated the transformation and aided us immensely in our project.
If you are looking for a book that soothes and relaxes with its words yet mesmerizes you with National Geographic-worthy photographs, this is the text for you and your kids!

Book Description
Tidepools and rocky shores are among the most physically stressful environments on earth. When the tide is high, waves can sweep over plants and animals at velocities as high as 60 miles per hour, while at low tide, the same organisms dry up and bake in the sun. Yet despite this seeming inhospitality, tidepools and rocky shores are exceptionally complex and biologically diverse. This comprehensive encyclopedia is an authoritative, one-stop reference for everyone interested in the biology and ecology of this fascinating and uniquely accessible environment. Conveniently arranged alphabetically, nearly 200 wide-ranging entries written in clear language by scientists from around the world provide a state-of-the-art picture of tidepools and rocky shore science. From Abalones, Barnacles, and Climate Change through Seagrasses, Tides, and Wind, the articles discuss the animals and plants that live in tidepools, the physics and chemistry of the rocky shore environment, the ecological principles that govern tidepools, and many other interdisciplinary topics.
* Generously illustrated with hundreds of color photographs, drawings, and diagrams
* The only comprehensive volume available on tidepools and rocky shores
* Articles include in-depth looks at animal and algal diversity and overviews of the history of research, rocky shore management, and conservation
* Contributors are experts on physics and physical oceanography, experi mental ecology, population genetics, taxonomy, and other disciplines

Description:
We have tested both the usefulness of high-resolution digital photography for data acquisition and digital image analysis, by non-supervised classification and high pass filter, for recognition and abundance estimation of benthic intertidal organisms. These digital tools were compared with visual scan and photo quadrat conventional methods. The comparison was done using 40 quadrats (10x5 cm) randomly selected along a 5-m transect on the rocky shore of the Pemaquid Point, Maine, USA. ANOVA for repeated measures was used to test differences among methods. Monte Carlo simulation analysis was used to explore differences among methods over a large set of data (n=100, 500, 1000 quadrats). Differences among methods were observed when 40 quadrats were used. Tukey multiple comparison test showed that abundance estimation from visual scan, photo quadrat and digital image analysis by high pass filter do not differ significantly among them but differ from non-supervised classification results. Due to its accurate estimation, high pass filter (Prewitt) method was chosen as the most reliable digital method to estimate species abundance. Monte Carlo simulation of visual scan, photo quadrat and high pass filter results showed significant differences when the number of quadrats was larger. These results showed that the combined use of digital photography and digital image analysis techniques for the acquisition and analysis of recorded data is a powerful method for the study of intertidal benthic organisms. Results produced using these techniques were similar than those produced by conventional methods but were obtained in a much-reduced time.

Description:
Although activity patterns are an important component of the ecology of animals as they search for food, mates and appropriate habitats, substantial variation can be observed even within a single population. The source of this variation is the combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors acting at an individual level. We documented the activity patterns of the ovoviviparous intertidal gastropod Littorina saxatilis (Olivi) over a series of tidal cycles to assess how differences in movements of individuals with different reproductive attributes (non-gravid females, gravid females and males) might explain intra-population variability in activity. Four behaviors were measured for four consecutive tidal cycles for each of 3 months: the magnitude, frequency, and orientation of movements, and the use of shelters (i.e., crevices). In addition, we correlated movements with variations in several environmental factors (temperature, wind, humidity) during low tide to investigate the possible risk sensitivity of the different reproductive groups. All groups were more active and moved greater distances during high tide. Females, especially gravid females, appeared to be more risk-sensitive as they moved shorter distances and used shelters more often. Gravid females were also the only group with a negative relationship between air temperature and movement during low tide. We interpret these behaviors as a means to increase the probability of survival of the brooded offspring carried by the female. Males were the only group to consistently have directionality in their movements and showed evidence of an ''up-down'' behavior for remaining in a restricted zone. Reproductive attributes appear to be able to explain part of the intra-population variability in foraging activity in natural populations and should be taken into account in the design and interpretation of behavioral and ecological studies.

Book Description
This book, which grew out of Steven Bleiler’s lecture notes from a course given by Andrew Casson at the University of Texas, is designed to serve as an introduction to the applications of hyperbolic geometry to low dimensional topology. In particular it provides a concise exposition of the work of Neilsen and Thurston on the automorphisms of surfaces. The reader requires only an understanding of basic topology and linear algebra, while the early chapters on hyperbolic geometry and geometric structures on surfaces can profitably be read by anyone with a knowledge of standard Euclidean geometry desiring to learn more abour other ‘geometric structures’.

FYODOR UNWRAPPED.......2006-08-22
This is a book (actually the first volume of a 2-volume set) for
Dostoevsky aficianados. There is some very interesting and varied material in this large volume -- essays, imaginings, journalism, polemic, short stories, propoganda, rants, etc.. A kind of 'Fyodor Unwrapped.' It helps to have read other books by this great Russian Master, particularly his 'Big 5': Crime & Punishment,The Idiot, The Devils, A Raw Youth, Brothers Karamavoz. The translation by Kenneth Lantz is excellently done; the extensive Introduction by Gary Saul Morsom, is helpful, but
definitely 'over kill.'
The book, in fact, is a microcosm of Dostoevsky himself: plenty of flaws and foolishness, but always worth plowing through. He is, after all, probably the world's greatest novelist, and I recommend this book highly to those who agree with that assessment.
Dostoevsky's Brilliance in "Raw" Form.......2000-09-10
All the elements of Dostoevsky's genius come through in this hodgepodge of literary forms. Kenneth Lantz is an extremely good translator. I don't know why he didn't translate Dostoevsky's other works.
deeply flawed yet deeply fascinating.......1999-08-06
This book and its companion volume present the contents of a journal written, edited, and published by Dostoevsky over a period of eight years. It is a fascinating collection. There are stories; there are literary discussions; there are commentaries on current events, especially court cases and international developments. There are jaw-drop-inducing vamps on the harmful effects of the Jews on decent Christian people. As time passes and Dostoevsky grows older and sicker, most other topics are abandoned in favor of eschatological Slavophile ruminations on the "Eastern Question" and the coming triumph of Russian Orthodoxy. All of this will be much more than the casual reader will want to wade through. Yet for the serious student or fan of Dostoevsky's novels, the diaries provide a unique and amazing window into the author's thinking. For the student of 19th century history, they are an unforgettable presentation of one side of the passionate arguments over the future of the Balkan countries. For the student of Russian history, they provide eyewitness commentary on the struggles that accompanied the introduction of Western-style legal reforms, such as trial by jury. They are unique and amazing volumes, enhanced by a superb editor's introduction and useful endnotes.
Another Dostoyevsky classic-not recommended for beginners.......1998-07-30
I bought this just because it was Dostoyevsky; I had no clue what it would be like. I thought that perhaps it was actually Dostoyevksy's personal diary. In fact, it is a journal Dostoyevsky wrote entirely himself and put out on a monthly basis. He muses on variety of subjects such as social-political issues of Russia at the time and criminal cases that have attracted his interest. In addition, he includes a few skeletons of short stories he is working on. Highly recommended for Dostoyevsky fanatics; newcomers would be better off reading Crime and Punishment.
