Ecophysiology attempts to clarify the role and importance of physiological processes, such as digestion and respiration, in the ecological relations of species in their natural habitats. The basic principles and methods that are central to any ecophysiological study are outlined and discussed, including animal capture, blood collection, and the measurement of plasma components and hormone levels. Attention is paid to animal welfare and ethical considerations, and the question of stress and how to identify its presence in animals in their natural environment is approached through a series of case studies. Examples are given from a wide range of vertebrates living in deserts, cold climates and oceans, and recent findings on the physiological adaptations of Antarctic birds and mammals are a highlight of the book. This textbook will provide an introduction to the study of ecophysiology for advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students, as well as researchers in ecology, biodiversity and conservation.

Truly an awful book by a terrible author........2007-07-01
I don't doubt that Gaskell knows thermodynamics but I must say his ability to convey that knowledge in what is supposed to be an introductory book is just downright awful. I was forced to use this book in college and it was easily in the top two or three worst text books I've ever encountered. Gaskell has the unique ability to make a difficult subject like thermodynamics incomprehensible. If your professor is suggesting the use of this book, tell him to write his own because it couldn't possibly be any worse. I wouldn't give this book to my worst enemy.

Book Description
This edition acts as an introductory text, simultaneously demonstrating the underlying principles and applicability of thermodynamics to the behaviour of non-metallic materials and to the transformation of metallurgy materials. Normal derivations of thermodynamic equations, whenever possible, are accompanied by derivations which illustrate the thermodynamics of the situation. The order in which material is presented is such that the text maintains a continuity of the development and the use of the principles. In addition, worked examples which illustrate the application of thermodynamics to the consideration of the behavior of materials systems are included.

Hit and miss.......2006-11-03
I used this book for my course in Materials Thermodynamics, and I must say that it's got some pretty good material and also some poor parts. In particular Gaskell usually does a good job of explaining his derivations, but there are times when the typographic errors get in the way and you sit there for an hour, until your teacher finally tells you that Gaskell made a mistake.
Another annoyance is that Gaskell's solutions in the back of the book are sometimes wrong, which means that it may be difficult to use a self-teaching book. In addition, Gaskell's solutions to some configurational entropy problems are just completely unconventional and nonsensical from an intuitive standpoint -- my teacher told us to disregard his method entirely.
The text does have some pluses: it has plentiful diagrams, excellent thermodynamic appendicies, and in general does a good job of rigorously explaining every concept. It's definitely not a beginner's book, but Thermodynamics is a complex topic and there are certain assumptions made of the reader in any Thermodynamics textbook.
Hard text.......2006-10-23
Thermodynamics is one of those topics covered in multiple branches of science such as physics, chemistry, geology, materials science, chemical engineering, etc... This book approaches the subject from materials science and is meant to serve as the book for a one or two semester course in thermo. First of, it is not meant for beginners to thermo. I used this book in a course taught by one of the best instructors in my department, after having taken two easier courses in thermo. Yet I still found it difficult. Second, the math is advanced enough that one should not take the course without having differential equations. Third, the example problems can get quite difficult real quickly; and not all have solutions. But overall, the text is a good reflection of the subject; difficult and time-consuming to master.
Not a great text.......2005-12-13
I used this text in a thermo of materials course after using the Gyftopoulos text for a general thermo course. In comparison, I found the Gaskell text horrible. For a 4th ed, there are a tremendous number of typos and equation errors, the nomenclature is a little odd, and the equations aren't general, they inherently assume P = 1atm etc. I don't recommend this text.
not timely delivered, the condition of the book is not good.......2005-09-22

Book Description
Aqueous Processing of Materials focuses on the use of water and water-based chemicals to process raw materials from the earth and transform them into technologically useful materials. In industrial practice, the conversion of raw materials to desired products invariably involves a succession of treatment steps. The approach taken in this text is to present a comprehensive overview of aqueous processing as related to metal extraction, materials processing and recycling, and explore how these processes share common unit operations and processes.
The aim of this text to is to present an integrated, input-to-output, unified treatment of the chemical and engineering principles underlying the aqueous processing of metals, especially hydrometallurgical extraction, materials synthesis and processing, recycling, and enviromentally successful effluent treatment.
·Offers a holistic approach to modeling and analyzing aqueous unit operations, from selecting input parameters to planning effluent control and quality
·Uses a quantitative emphasis to problem-solving and design methodology
.Underscores the basic chemical principles underlying all aqueous processing applications
·Contains worked examples and comprehensive end-of-chapter problems
Book Description
Eight topics about the unit cubes are introduced within this textbook: cross sections, projections, inscribed simplices, triangulations, 0/1 polytopes, Minkowski's conjecture, Furtwangler's conjecture, and Keller's conjecture. In particular Chuanming Zong demonstrates how deep analysis like log concave measure and the Brascamp-Lieb inequality can deal with the cross section problem, how Hyperbolic Geometry helps with the triangulation problem, how group rings can deal with Minkowski's conjecture and Furtwangler's conjecture, and how Graph Theory handles Keller's conjecture.

Product Description
Here, from the father of spy fiction, is the grand sequence of his great master spy's adventures in four famous books: The Thirty-Nine Steps, Greenmantle, Mr. Standfast and The Three Hostages.
From the introduction by Robin W. Winks:
John Buchan is the father of the modern spy thriller. This is so even though the Hannay books are not, strictly speaking, about spies at all...They are about penetration of the enemy, about lonely escape and wild journeys, about the thin veneer that stands between civilization and barbarism even in the most elegant drawing-room in London.
The Thirty-Nine Steps shows...an attractive man, not too young...and not too old, since he must have the knowledge of maturity and substantial experience on which he will draw while being able to respond to the physical rigors of chase and pursuit. Let the hero, who appears at first to be relatively ordinary, and who thinks of himself as commonplace, be drawn against his best judgment into a mystery he only vaguely comprehends, so that he and the reader may share the growing tension together. Set him a task to perform...Place obstacles in his path the enemy, best left as ill-defined as possible, so that our hero cannot be certain who he might trust. See to it that he cannot turn to established authority to help, indeed that the police, the military, the establishment will be actively working against him.
Then set a clock ticking...

The Original Spy Thrillers.......2006-02-06
"The Four Adventures of Richard Hannay" gathers in one volume stories written by John Buchan during and after his service as an British intelligence officer during the First World War. The first two stories were actually written and published as the war with Imperial Germany and her allies progressed, imparting a sense of urgency and uncertainty about the outcome that an historical novel written after the fact might not have captured in the same way. "The Thirty-Nine Steps", "Greenmantle", "Mr. Standfast", and "The Three Hostages" follow the career of South African mining engineer and British Army officer Richard Hannay. Hannay stumbles into the spy business through the murder of an accidental lodger in "The Thirty-Nine Steps", set in the time just before the outbreak of war, and is repeatedly called back to the spying businees, often from his military duties, in the remaining stories. Buchan's technique improved with practice; the stories develop more complicated plotlines and smoother deliveries.
Those familar with the Sherlock Holmes stories will find a similar sort of pacing in Buchan's adventure stories. Buchan relies heavily on coincidence and exotic settings in advancing his story lines, and some of the stereotypes and language will seem dated to modern readers. Some other portions of the stories will seem remarkably fresh, as for example Hannay's description of the opposition by some Britons to the War with Germany, proof, if we needed it, that human nature is remarkably constant. The story lines are engaging, and Richard Hannay is a sympathetic hero, if very much a man of his times. Buchan, a born and raised Scotsman, is often at his literary best in describing the people, land and simple details of ordinary living of Scotland and England.
Readers are highly encouraged to read the introductory essay by Robin Winks, which provides excellent background on the remarkable life of John Buchan and the context of his writing. In his description of the "Buchan Formula", Winks makes the case that Buchan is the literary forefather of later writers of spy fiction such as Jon LeCare.
This book is highly recommended to those fans of the spy genre who would like to explore its antecendants, and to those readers looking for authentic period piece stories.
The spy who bored me.......2004-11-14
Buchan hasn't held up. His people are shadows and caricatures that read like the over-made-up characters in some silent movie. He doesn't seem to have much of a grip on religion, language, ethnicity or simple human motivations. Authors fade into obscurity for a reason -- and there are reasons why book introductions, like the one offered here, take on such a defensive tone. In Buchan's case the reason is his tales of exotic adventure read like one part Kipling and 20 parts dishwater. If you must read him, don't go anywhere near "Kim" until you're well through.
Mr Standfast.......2003-07-06
Having just finished Mr Standfast I felt it a good time to review my thoughts and emotions stirred by the book.
Mr Standfast, the third Buchan novel in the General Hannay series, is a fascinating study in the era in which it was both set and authored. Being published in 1919, the events of WW1, the topic of the book, were no doubt fresh in the authors mind.
The book is not easy for the 21st Century reader with many words not frequently in current use. Keep a dictionary handy. It is however a stimulating read with a great historical
backdrop. Whilst at times farfetched and Biggles like in it's gingoistic tone, the reader is drawn into Hannay's affection for his cause. Overall, a thoroughly recommended read.
Classic adventure yarns.......2003-07-06
As my title says, the Four Adventures are real classics that spawned a whole library of imitators. Written as they were during the First World War and immediate post-war period by someone who both hob-nobbed with the political movers and shakers of the time & may have participated in some intertesting Intelligence work on his own (see Peter Hopkirk's LIKE HIDDEN FIRE for some of the "facts" behind GREENMANTLE) they capture a time a place and a people at the height of British global dominance. Given that the first three tales were written during some of the most desperate days of World War I it is no accident that there is some pro-British propaganda, but as the excellnt introduction to this edition points out, Buchan is remarkably kind to both friends and foes, and while the Bad-Guys are truly Bad, they also have their redeeming qualities. THIRTY-NINE STEPS has been made into a number of movies, none of which do it justice. GREENMANTLE is my personal favorite & reading it again for the umpteenth time last year I was struck by how remarkably prescient Buchan was as to the problems we now face with an Islamic Middle East. Mr. Standfast actually wraps things up nicely, with some excellent descriptions of fighting on the Western Front, and I always felt that THE FOUR HOSTAGES was a bit of a tag-on that really wasn't needed (the same can be said of the fifth and long out of print Hannay adventure THE ISLE OF SHEEP, which has been sensibly left out of this volume). If you like adventure stories with a strong male hero, a nice mystery, clearly defined Good and Evil, an appealing heroine (in the last three Adventures) and a good sense of history by someone who actually made part of it, this volume is for you. Readers of Alan Furst & the like will see where contemporary authors got their ideas & timing. This is a wonderful look into a now vanished world that still has clues to our troubled present.
39-steps: Buchan wrote the book, on the classic adventure.......1998-05-09
'Nuff said about the 39-steps; read the book. If I had written the 39-steps, I could have died without regret.
Buchan delved the emotional depths of strong, silent men, in the wild mystical motion of Greenmantle & in the static unshaken forces of endurance & will of Mr. Standfast. In these two tales, he brought the irresistible force & the immoveable object, the two opposing forces of nature, the storm & the rock, the Yin & the Yang, into being, in his writing.
Strangely, it is another, black, South African, the great Nelson Mandela, who typified in real life, the qualities of Buchan's fictional Boer, Peter Pienaar.
The three hostages was a cop-out, an afterthought, the dabbling of an artist who had reached the top of the mountain and was now relaxing & drawing pretty pictures for his grandchildren.

Book Description
Not far from the city there is an ancient wood, forgotten by the modern world, where Mystery walks in the moonlight. He wears the shape of a stag, or a goat, or a horned man wearing a cloak of leaves. He is summoned by the music of the pipes or a fire of bones on Midsummer's Evening. He is chased by the hunt and shadowed by the wild girl.
Customer Reviews:
Fun & Easy Read.......2007-03-04
I chose Greenmantle solely because I read that it was a good start to reading anything by de Lint. His style of Urban Fantasy is unique because it combines both the aspects of traditional fiction with aspects of fantasy. This undoubtedly gets many true Fantasy aficionados upset that his work should be considered Fantasy at all but I now tend to disagree with these beliefs since reading this novel.
Greenmantle on the whole is just a simple, yet good, story. There's nothing in the way of true discussion upon society or politics. His development of friendship between adults and children was very good I thought and his style of writing is very peaceful and easy to follow. This novel is easily just as accessible for teenagers as it is for adults and I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a good novel to read. It is especially adequate for those who dislike reading true Fantasy novels because of their inherent 'far out' nature but who still wish to read a novel with a bit of the mystic and mysterious.
A Wonderful Surprise.......2007-02-09
Greenmantle is a beautiful story, a hidden story. It is a story of love, murder, revenge, loss, past mysteries, resolution, friendship and the fantastic. This is the first work of Charles De Lint's that I have read, and I must say that he will be put on my list of must read author's after this wonderful book.
Greenmantle is the tale of "a mystery," a being that exist in our world, yet lives in a parallel version of that same world. He is a stag, a greenman, Pan, a goat, etc. Alice Treasure and her mother, Frankie, move to a very small country town out in the woods after winning the lottery. Ali discovers the sound of pipes playing in the woods and is changed by the sound.
Mix this story with a mafia story and what you have is Greenmantle. I never thought that I would be a fan of any story about the mafia. Just never been in to that genre, but De Lint works the mafia into a work of fantasy and it really works! What you get is a wonderful story with a strong human touch and beautiful, well developed characters, set in the real world, yet a fantasy world at the same time.
De Lint's writing style reminds me a lot of Neil Gaiman's. Common themes can be drawn between the two writers. Both are able to create a totally believable fantasy world within the modern world in which we live. Both focus on relationships between people and the power that is in those relationships. Both take ordinary people and make them into their own kind of heroes. Gaiman has a slight edge over De Lint, but that should not take anything away from De Lint. De Lint knows how to write a page turner that doesn't just have a driving plot (numerous plots at that), but he knows how to write well. He always chooses the right words and really makes this book an enjoyable and moving experience.
The cover art is wonderful and is done by David Bergen. Nice stuff.
Favorite line of the book: "I've been all the way there and back again - just like Bilbo."
Perfect for a Charles de Lint beginner..........2002-04-26
...well, this and Yarrow, really. While de Lint's Newford books are BY FAR his best, they are a little confusing to jump into headfirst. Greenmantle and Yarrow provide the reader with a great way to understand the modern master of urban fantasy. The characters are warm, vivid, and funny. The settings are lush, and eerily familiar at times (as though you really LIVE the tale).
The order that I would personally recommend reading de Lint books: Yarrow, Greenmantle, Memory and Dream, Dreams Underfoot, Trader (this one is a little hard to find, but it's totally worth it) , The Ivory and The Horn, Someplace to be Flying (my own favorite), Moonlight and Vines, Forests of the Heart, anf finally The Onion Girl (which is basically the all-star Newford book, so make sure you read the others first, or you won't know ANY of the characters). There are other books of his, that I have never been so enamored of; The Moonheart books, Svaha, The Little Country, etc.
If you are an aspiring writer, and are prepared to drop a few bucks, get Triskell Tales. It's a wonderful way to see the way a witer can develop in terms of style and story. Also, check out his new collaboration with Charles Vess, Seven Wild Sisters.
When worlds collide..........2001-11-14
One of the things de Lint does best is dealing with what happens when the everyday (ordinary) meets the magic (extraordinary). In this case, the everyday is Ali, her mom, and Tony. The magic is, of course, Mally, the village, and the mystery - the green man. What happens next is pure de Lint magic.
This was the second de Lint book I read after I discovered him, the first being "Yarrow", and it's still one of my favorites. I come back to it again and again when I feel the need for a little magic in my life... something de Lint does extraordinarily well!
One of his best.......2001-06-16
I think Greenmantle is one of de Lint's best "pagan" attempts. And I loved the biker character crossover from Yarrow. I have read nearly every book by Mr. De Lint. This is one I had, loaned, lost and repurchased in Trade format. Lyrical and dreamy on one hand and then harsh and clear-eyed on the other. I liked the juxtapositions.
Book Description
In Greenmantle (1916), a classic tale of espionage and adventure, Richard Hannay, hero of The Thirty-Nine Steps, travels across war-torn Europe on the trail of a German plot and an Islamic Messiah. He is joined by three more of Buchan's heroes: Peter Pienaar, the old Boer scout; John S.
Blenkiron, the American determined to fight the Kaiser; and Sandy Arbuthnot--Greenmantle himself--a character modelled on Lawrence of Arabia. Together they move in disguise through Germany to Constantinople and the Russian border in order to face their enemies: the grotesque Stumm and the evil femme
fatale Hilda von Einem.

"I had just finished breakfast and was filling my pipe when I got Bullivant's telegram. It was at Furling, the big country house in Hampshire where I had come to convalesce after Loos, and Sandy, who was in the same case, was hunting for the marmalade. I flung him the flimsy with the blue strip pasted down on it, and he whistled. "

A must Read.......2007-07-01
This one of the most spellbinding books I've read. It is impossible to put down and once read will be pulled down off the shelf and reread time and again. I own over 3,000 hardcover books, have read every one of them at least once, greenmantle, about every five years I have to read it again. If you love adventure and wonderful writing, this book is a must read.
One of Buchan's best.......2006-07-07
Greenmantle is one of the finest examples of Buchan's writing--if not the best, although Witch Wood is a contender. During World War 1, four men embark on a trip through wartime Europe and Germany to Constantinople. Their aim is to find a secret weapon: a nuclear ray? a new kind of aeroplane?--Well, I'll only say, something totally different.
The story is longer, more philosophical, and of far wider scope than its predecessor, The Thirty-Nine Steps. There are more characters, more locations, more pressure on our heroes. There are many memorable passages of writing--from Germany in winter to the first sight of the mountains in Turkey. The plot relies less on coincidence than The Thirty-Nine Steps, but gets criticised just as harshly for it. The only place I've ever found coincidences not to happen are in realistic fiction (or, they're bad coincidences).
Still, if you can accept the fact that this is a relatively optimistic wartime thriller (compared to some recent efforts) with plenty of adventure and suspense, you'll love this book.
Life As It Was Once Upon A Time........2005-05-10
This was written as a follow-up to THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS. In this adventure, Richard Hannay is aided in his mission of his undercover work by Greenmantle (modeled on American Aubrey Herbert). The writer, John Buchan uses his experiences as assistant private secretary to the British High Commissioner in South Africa (1901-1903). He was literate, wrote adventure novels of three separate series. He wrote this story while serving in the Intelligence Corps during WWI (1916) in France.
He was born in Scotland, the son of a minister. He was a lawyer and partner in Thomas Nelson & Son publishing house in Edinburgh in 1907. In 1935, he was appointed Governor-General of Canada and died in Montreal in 1940 before I was born.
Richard and his group must undermine a Holy War in the Near East of Muslims against the British. As they work on this goal of preventing vast disaster, they are miraculosly aided by the Russian Sossack calvary. "Then I knew that the prophecy had been true -- that their prophet had not failed them. The long-looked-for revelation had come: Greenmantle." This was written in a series of Classics for Nashville publisher.
Museum piece, badly dated.......2004-06-06
A friend recommended I read Greenmantle. My friend thought Buchan predicted the emergence of Jihad as a factor in world politics. If so, I didn't notice it.
The story is rather lame, never providing much of a surprise or emotional undercurrent. Buchan relies on luck to extract our hero from almost every plot twist. The 'mystery' code is solved without requiring any discoveries by our spying expedition, so I had to wonder why they even left on their adventure.
Waiting for the insight on Jihad, I forced myself to finish the book. It never arrived. The Turks appearing in the plot are universally dim witted fools and/or larcenous scoundrels. Buchan suggests the jihad can be organized by the man who wears the 'green mantle'. Even Buchan seems uncomfortable with this plot device. Of course, the British and the Turks somehow fail to notice their 'prophet' is a British officer and spy. The book concludes with the British spy charging off into the sunset followed by a host of obedient Turks. I guess this was what Buchan and his faithful readers made of Jihad.
Excellent Spy Novel.......2004-01-26
Greenmantle is a dramatic and suspenseful story of 4 men journeying through enemy lines to stop an evil menace that may crush Britain during WW1.As you read you will be able to tell that John Buchan knew what he was writing about! The characters and the plot are very well developed and sometimes rather confusing but if you just keep reading it will clear up. Buchan sometimes gets technical and you may have to look up some phrases/words in the back but this book is worth it. I would recommend it for 11th grade +. Once you start it you may not be able to put it down so enjoy!
