Thinking about Biology
Stephen Webster Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521599547 |
Book Description
Intended for biology students, this philosophical commentary on biology makes science students' studies more interesting by offering an easy way of studying the philosophy of science, as well as engaging in debates about the social and political implications of biology. It is a unique biology textbook because it adopts an explicitly philosophical approach.Download Description
Thinking About Biology is intended for biology students who are interested in reflecting on the wider contexts of their studies. The book encourages students to see that biology does not deliver certainties; it discusses how biological ideas become established facts; it uses history to examine how ideas change, and to show that the biological facts that form the basis of a biology course are likely to change too. Each chapter is based on biological topics, and examines them for their philosophical, social and political implications. Topics covered include the role of natural selection in evolution, the history of ideas about fertilisation and inheritance, vivisection, and reductionism. Genetically modified foods, xenotransplantation, eugenics, and genetic testing are some of the controversial subjects discussed. Thinking About Biology should be essential reading for all college students already taking a biology course, and for those contemplating such a course in the future.Customer Reviews:
It's philosophy, but not as we know it!.......2003-05-27
Webster's book shows that there is much more to PoB than evolutionary conundrums. It is refreshingly openminded towards the choice of topics. To be sure, there is a chapter on evolution, but this is certainly not the lion's part of the book. In fact, the central theme is the interaction between biology and society. This theme is illustrated by historical as well as very up to date issues. A choice selection: Eugenics, Human Genome Project, the use of animals in research, research ethics. The book also touches on some general themes in Philosophy of Science, such as the status of `facts', and reductionism.
The style of presentation is unpretentious and accessible. Although there is no Reference section (making the book suspect - `unscientific' - for some people), references to relevant literature is made throughout the book in footnotes. These are remarkably up-to-date, covering some material from 2002!
`Thinking about Biology' is a wellcome addition to the literature of PoB. The only drawback is that sometimes there is much description of how things went, as in the Mad Cow Disease history, but little analysis of a basic problem this history illustrates, namely that scientists and politicians do communicate so badly. But it makes very clear that such a problem exists, and biology students should take good notice of such points!

Thinking about Creation: Eternal Torah and Modern Physics
Andrew Goldfinger Manufacturer: Jason Aronson ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0765760428 |
Book Description
Six days or fifteen billion years? At first glance, the biblical and scientific accounts of the creation of the universe seem quite different. How then can there be modern twentieth century people who respect the methods and conclusions of science, yet take the Bible to be literally correct? The answer is given in this book. Dr. Andrew Goldfinger is a physicist by profession and a chasidic Jew by commitment. He takes the reader through the story of creation from both viewpoints.Customer Reviews:
An approach to the relationship between Religion and Science.......2006-01-27
Hocus Pocus.......2005-03-20
A must read!.......2002-10-07
He is well able to comment on both Torah and science. He is a practicing Orthodox Jew (Chassidic actually) and lives Judaism every minute of his life (ours is not a religion that allows you to compartmentalize your religious convictions and the rest of your life). He is also an accomplished physicist (he works at Johns Hopkins as a researcher).
This book is a joy to read. A book that is heavy on physics has the potential to be very dry and boring (at least for me), good bedtime reading, but I find this one to be very interesting. No surprise since I've heard Dr. Goldfinger lecture and I've met him (I sometimes attend the same synagogue as he) and found him to be an extememly warm person. I am looking forward to his next book whenever it comes out.
Interesting; a triple, not a home run........2000-08-13
In my opinion the definitive work in this area remains Gerald Schroeder's Genesis and the Big Bang.
A very enjoyable and enlightening book!.......2000-03-30

Thinking about Evolution: Historical, Philosophical, and Political Perspectives
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0521620708 |
Book Description
This is the second of two volumes published by Cambridge University Press in honor of Richard Lewontin. The first volume, Evolutionary Genetics from Molecules to Morphology, honors Lewontin's more technical contributions to genetics and evolutionary biology. This second volume of essays honors the philosophical, historical, and political dimensions of his work. Given the range of Lewontin's own contributions, it is fitting that the volume covers such a wide range of perspectives on modern biology. He was a very successful practitioner of evolutionary genetics, a rigorous critic of the practices of genetics and evolutionary biology, as well as an articulate analyst of the social, political, and economic contexts and consequences of genetic and evolutionary research. The volume contains an essay by Lewontin on Natural History and Formalism in Evolutionary Genetics, and an extended interview with Lewontin, covering the history of evolutionary genetics as seen from his perspective and exemplified by his career. The remaining chapters, contributed by former students, post-docs, colleagues, and collaborators, cover issues ranging from the history and conceptual foundations of evolutionary biology and genetics, to the implications of human genetic diversity, to the political economy of agriculture and public health.

Young Children's Thinking about Biological World (Essays in Development Psychology)
Giyoo Hatano Manufacturer: Psychology Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1841690414 |
Book Description
This book is a study of young children's naive biology. It examines such theoretical issues as processes, conditions and mechanisms in conceptual development using the development of biological understanding as the target case. Based on the review of recent studies in the North America and Australia as well as in Japan, the authors claim that children as young as five years of age, that is, before formal schooling, possess a naive theory of biology, which is differentiated from naive theories of psychology and physics. They characterize this initial form of biology as personifying and vitalistic. At a more general level, the authors try to offer an integrative and moderate model of conceptual development as a domain-specific construction of theory-like knowledge systems under cognitive and sociocultural constraints.
