Book Description

When people connect with nature, they do so in a specific place, and The Thunder Tree shows how that connection can change a life forever, how roots in the earth can be as important as roots in a family. For Robert Michael Pyle, that place was the High Line Canal in Denver, Colorado, which he first discovered as a boy in the 1950s.

"From the time I was six," he writes, "this weedy watercourse had been my sanctuary, playground, and sulking walk. It was also my imaginary wilderness, escape hatch, and birthplace as a naturalist. Later the canal served as lover's lane, research site, and holy ground of solace."

In this lyrical memoir and unforgettable portrait of place, Pyle argues eloquently that if we fail to preserve our opportunities to explore nature, we will diminish our lives and our culture immeasurably. (51/2 X 81/4, 240 pages)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fine example of regional writing, focusing on Colorado.......2001-05-20

Starting from a personal viewpoint (but in no means limited by it) author Robert Michael Pyle eloquently writes of the importance of nature and of making a personal connection to the land and the natural world. Never preachy, he manages to gently urge the reader to look more closely at the local landmarks, wildlife and little details that make up their most familiar landscapes. I saw the landscape in my area with new eyes after reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars A trip in the natural pockets left within suburban sprawl........1996-05-24

Pyle grew up near an irrigation canal running through Denver and Aurora, Colorado. He has returned to this canal throughout his life, and in this book he tells their stories. Urbanization leaves these pockets of unclaimed land behind, and this book is a durable guide to one example. Coloradans will find Pyle's work especially relevant. At times, the author strays into a didactic zeal as he warns of the need to protect such places, but this is by far the lesser part of The Thunder Tree.

    2 out of 5 stars I thought this was a book!.......2007-08-15

I thought this was a book, but it is actually a pamphlet. It only shows the picture of the bird and it's name. I had trouble getting it, and when I ordered it, I recieved it 6 weeks later in an envelope! I still am looking for a good informational book on birds.

5 out of 5 stars The Urban Naturalist was the first and is still the best........2004-09-01

The Urban Naturalist was the first book to recognize the importance of urban ecosystems in the grand scheme of things. This is not the only reason it's become a classic. It's enduring qualities include the fact that it's still by far the best book on the subject. It covers so much so well. And it speaks elegantly to such a wide range of audiences. While teaching about urban ecology it also teaches behavioral evolution and ecology from the perspective of a very gifted environmental professional.

1 out of 5 stars Filled with inaccuracies.......2004-05-01

As an urban ecologist working in NYC, I have to say I was disappointed with this book. I found it to be riddled with inaccuracies.

Instead, I HIGHLY recommend two books: Wild New York by Mittelbach & Crewdson or A Natural History of New York City by John Kiernan

5 out of 5 stars The Urban Naturalist.......2002-12-20

A classic. Put urban ecosystems on the map. Garber wrote the book on urban ecosystems.

        Book Description

Shortlisted for the City of Toronto Book Award

“City dwellers,” writes Wayne Grady, “are conditioned to look for ‘Nature’ outside the city: at the cottage, at summer camp, up north. Somewhere else.” These, he maintains, are not the only places to look. Nature lush, untamed, and fertile is thriving right where we are: in the not completely concrete jungles of our urban core.

As Grady convincingly demonstrates, the city is a natural ecosystem unto itself. It nourishes thousands of species of native flora and fauna, welcomes hundreds of others that have immigrated and adapted, and provides still others with the only environment that will ensure their survival. This is true for any city, but especially so in Toronto, home to 40,000 raccoons, the world’s largest colony of ring-billed gulls, and probably more termites per cubic metre of wood than anywhere on Earth. Indeed, there is more wildlife in Toronto today than in the last century: brown bats wouldn’t winter in town if city homes didn’t offer attics for their use; cockroaches wouldn’t have spread this far north if we hadn’t invented central heating; a single vacant lot in the Annex was recently found to contain 32 species of wildflowers. And there are coyote dens in the Don River Valley.

In fourteen engaging essays, Grady introduces us to these and other natural wonders of Toronto, from snakes and mosquitoes to black squirrels and house sparrows. Following in the tracks of urban naturalists before him - Catherine Parr Traill, Ernest Thompson Seton, Anna Jameson and Fred Bodsworth - and effortlessly blending science, history, and literature, Grady writes wittily and gracefully about the evolution, eating habits, mating rituals and turf wars of your most common - and wild - city neighbours.

            Product Description

View from a Shed is not a book about gardening. It is a book about people who garden. People like Mrs. Fuller, almost 100 years old, who remembers watching supervised Italian POWs during WW1, demolish the local manor house; General Safi who was the Protector of the King of Afghanistan but fled his native country after being imprisoned and tortured; and Michael Wale who has had an allotment since 1980 and has an obsession with compost. Allotments have always been a huge part of urban life and it is that history that informs Wale's narrative. As he takes the reader on a tour of the seasons in his allotment world, he engages with his fellow gardeners and tells their stories. The result is a warm and tender story of flowers and food; sheds and greenhouses; gardeners and local councils. This book is an ideal memoir for everyone in the big city who has dreamt about the country life.

                      Book Description

This book is a revised and up-dated fourth edition of a textbook designed for upper division courses in linear algebra. It includes the basic results on vector spaces over fields, determinants, the theory of a single linear tranformation, and inner product spaces. While it does not presuppose an ealier course, many connections between linear algebrta and calculus are worked into the discussion, making it best suited for students who have completed the calulus sequence. A special feature of the book is the inclusion of sections devoted to applications of linear algebra, which can either be part of a course, or used for independent study. The topics covered in these secions are the geometric interpretation of systems of linear equations, the classification of finite symmetry groups in two and three dimensions, the exponential of a matrix and its application to solving systems of first order linear differential equations with constant coefficients, and Hurwitz's theorem on the composition of quadratic forms. This revised fourth edition contains a new section on analytic methods in matrix theory, with applications to Markov chains in probability theory. Proofs of all the main theorems are included, and are presented on an equal footing with methods for solving numerical problems. Worked examples are included in almost every section, to bring out the meaning of the theorems, and to illustrate techniques for solving problems. Many numerical exercises are included, which use all the ideas, and develop computational skills. There are also exercises of a theoretical nature, which provide opportunities for students to discover interesting theings for themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Used for Self Study.......2006-09-16

I used this book for an independent study of linear algebra in undergrad. I'd had no prior exposure to the field, but had taken very good real analysis and abstract algebra courses prior. My self-study was quite effective, which is a testament to the book, since it was essentially the only material I had. (There were a few typos I remember seeing, as well as some unclear formulas/notation here and there, hence the four stars, but nothing serious).

                      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Work.......2004-12-15

I used this book for a first course in linear algebra at Ohio State University and I could not have been more satisfied. It is a challenging book to use, but very rewarding for those who put the time into it.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but could be better........2003-11-11

The book sometimes eliminates using some symbols when the meaning is clear from the context; this is OK only if you either have prior understanding of the material presented or easy access to an expert.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Book On Special Topics.......2000-09-05

This book treats linear algebra in the way it should be - fairly theoretical, but without sacrificing the physical meanings behind. Its special attentions on topics such as Jordan canonical form, orthogonal transformation, symmetry groups, etc., are quite successful in bringing out the importance of linear algebra in other areas of mathematics. Yet, it does not cover sufficient materials for matrices over the complex field, possibly due to a restricted introductory scope for this book.

2 out of 5 stars great material, but poor presentation.......2000-03-23

this book has excellent material in linear algebra, unfortunately the presentation leaves a lot to be desired. if you like "classical old textbook-style presentation", then this is the book for you, otherwise, you should invest in Horn/Johnson or Kreyszig. note that the treatment of this book is deeper than the treatment in the popular Strang, albeit in a much less-accessible packaging.

                      Book Description

This popular and successful text was originally written for a one-semester course in linear algebra at the sophomore undergraduate level. Students at this level generally have had little contact with complex numbers or abstract mathematics, so the book deals almost exclusively with real finite dimensional vector spaces, but in a setting and formulation that permits easy generalization to abstract vector spaces. The goal of the first two editions was the principal axis theorem for real symmetric linear transformation. The principal axis theorem becomes the first of two goals for this new edition, which follows a straight path to its solution. A wide selection of examples of vector spaces and linear transformation is presented to serve as a testing ground for the theory. In the second edition, a new chapter on Jordan normal form was added which reappears here in expanded form as the second goal of this new edition, along with applications to differential systems. To achieve the principal axis theorem in one semester a straight path to these two goals is followed. As compensation, there is a wide selection of examples and exercises. In addition, the author includes an introduction to invariant theory to show students that linear algebra alone is not capable of solving these canonical forms problems. The book continues to offer a compact, but mathematically clean introduction to linear algebra with particular emphasis on topics that are used in abstract algebra, the theory of differential equations, and group representation theory.

                      1 out of 5 stars A Terrible Textbook.......2007-04-30

This book is god-awful. The author will use the same symbol to mean many different things, and won't bother to explain the new terminology if he's used it within the past couple of pages.

It's impossible to open the book and pick the important bits out of each chapter - theorems, proofs, and examples all look the same. If you want to find that theorem you think you saw several pages ago, you have to skim very carefully.

The exercises at the end of each chapter are all complete wastes of time. Invert a 5x5 matrix! You won't learn anything useful in the process, but it'll take you a while to get there!

If you want to learn linear algebra, just read mathworld and wikipedia instead of buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars A very good on linear algebra!.......2000-09-14

I found the book to be very thorough and well written. It seemed very easy to understand except for the chapter on Jordan Canonical Forms. However, I would not recommend this book to someone who is learning it for the first time, unless they have a high degree of mathematical maturity. Try the beginner book by Howard Anton.

                        Book Description

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Workshop on Numerical Analysis and Its Applications, WNAA'96, held in Rousse, Bulgaria, in June 1996.The 57 revised full papers presented were carefully selected and reviewed for inclusion in the volume; also included are 14 invited presentations. All in all, the book offers a wealth of new results and methods of numerical analysis applicable in computational science, particularly in computational physics and chemistry. The volume reflects that the cooperation of computer scientists, mathematicians and scientists provides new numerical tools for computational scientists and, at the same time, stimulates numerical analysis.

                                  Book Description

5 out of 5 stars A handy reference book on Angels.......1998-07-30

I don't know how many times I have had a question on a certain angel and gone to this book to look it up. Easy to use and helpful to have. I have gotten a lot of use out it.
