Book Description
Traditionally a scientific theory is viewed as based on universal laws of nature that serve as axioms for logical deduction. In analyzing the logical structure of evolutionary biology, Elisabeth Lloyd argues that the semantic account is more appropriate and powerful. This book will be of interest to biologists and philosophers alike.
Book Description
This book is a teaching book for advanced undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. Its primary goal is to link some contemporary applications in chemistry, biology and medicine to known photophysical principles and laser properties. Chapters 1-3 highlight the basic photochemical and photophysical principles associated with electronic states together with a survey of laser systems, timing, and related devices. The following chapters include several techniques and applications in the fields of chemistry, biology and medicine that are based on these basic principles. This approach provides a means of motivating the student to link simple scientific ideas to their potential applications. The discussed techniques were grouped according to the photophysical or laser characteristics that are common among them. For instance, the photophysical properties of internal conversion (ic) and vibrational cascade (vc) constitute the basis of techniques depending on changes in molecular flexibility. We discussed several techniques depending on this phenomenon namely the detection of salmonella by the commercially available 4-methyl umbelliferyl caprilate (MUCAP) reagent, the modification of fingerprints upon metal ion complexation, DNA quantification by flexible fluorescent stains. The heat evolution associated with vc process is the basis of thermal lensing techniques as well as the laser welding of some biological tissues. Molecular fluorescence, another photophysical deactivation pathway, is the workhorse technique in medical diagnosis and analytical applications. The capabilities of fluorescence techniques were largely modified by applying time-resolved phenomena as well as polarized fluorescence. Applications

Book Description
Atomic physics has played a central role in the development of modern physics. Progress was based on newly invented scientific methods and experimental tools and today these techniques are successfully employed in a wide variety of highly active areas in modern research, extending from investigations of most fundamental interactions in physics to experiments related to topics in applied sciences and technical aspects. With steadily increasing importance they are found in areas well outside of classical atomic physics in fields such as nuclear and particle physics, metrology, physics of condensed matter and surfaces, physical chemistry, chemistry, medicine and environmental research. This book gives a thorough survey of the methods and techniques in key experiments of interdisciplinary research.

Customer Reviews:
Best Nonlinear Optics of Materials Book.......2001-06-17
The book's description of how to do nonlinear optical experiments is outstanding. I have never seen a book that explains how measurements are done and how one can relate measurements to susceptibilities. These kinds of details are never described in journal articles and can usually be found only in hard-to-find Ph.D. dissertations. Many of the chapters are written by the experts that invented the measurement techniques being discussed, so this book gives you an inside track. The first three chapters very nicely present the theory that is used in the rest of the book. Given that each chapter is written by a different group of people, the book fits together nicely. This is the one book I would choose to take to a desert island because it has all the basics. A must buy for anyone interested in the cutting edge of materials nonlinear optics.
This book has everything about nonlinear optics of Materials.......2001-06-13
This book is one of the best resources I've seen. Nonlinear optical properties are tabulated and experimental techniques are described. Chapter 3 is an extremely useful treatment of the relationship between molecular and bulk properties and includes lots of stuff that's never been published anywhere else. I use it as a reference all the time. The book is pricey but worth every penny.

Customer Reviews:
A science classic, but..........2006-02-03
I'm specifically reviewing the first edition here, published 1980. If this site drags it to a later edition, then please just ignore most of the following -- but at least read the last paragraph BEFORE you buy!!
Basically, as a work in the development of science in the latter part of the 20th century, & specifically as a groundbreaking work in modern forensic detection, this book is remarkable, & deserves no less than 5 stars.
However, think of how far technology has come since then, & don't shell out more than a few dollars unless it's the CURRENT EDITION.
Look, it's a mere 104 pages. And it almost entirely tells you all you'll never need to know about argon lasers -- you know, the big honkers that plug into a 200-volt outlet & require a hookup to the faucet to keep the tube cool.
It's a lot like finding a manual for the Apple IIe: how many of you really need it, & why would you pay $100???
Nowadays, for what an Ar laser (& accesories) used to cost, you could buy a spiffy unit like a Polilight & set up your own lab, & never get around to most of what Menzel says in the first edition.
Aside from that, if you can get this classic for a few bucks, & are into forensic science, you'll enjoy pages 45 through 77 -- which, appropriately enough, is the chapter called "Laser Detection of Latent Fingerprints." So, don't lay out a lot of cash for what amounts to 33 pages!
I can see why Menzel is hailed as a genius: he took primitive (by today's standards) equipment, pulled together a bunch of fragments, & established a solid grounding for crime-scene evaluation that is still being mined.
But do his work justice, & get the most recent edition. Unless you can get the Marketplace seller to ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE which edition they're selling, DO NOT BUY FROM THEM -- save yourself some trouble, & pay Amazon the $100 for a nice fresh copy.

Book Description
Chemists today creatively use laser-generated photons as probes of molecular structure and as reagents to effect chemical transformations. A Guide to Lasers in Chemistry serves to introduce and illustrate the use of lasers in chemistry through specific case studies. The in-depth case glossary and appendices make this text an excellent reference tool for professionals. It is also appropriate for those preparing for research on the various uses of lasers or individuals who are interested in the use of lasers in chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Almost a coffee table book..........2001-03-12
Lasers in Chemistry is a first glance a very easily accessible book with good use of figures and easily understood text. Additionally, the case studies outlined in the later chapter are particularly interesting and more comlete than I have seen in other texts.
However, for the average user of this book (an advanced undergraduate or graduate Chemistry student) a more advanced book such as Andrews' Lasers in Chemistry would be far more informative and equally well understood.
Perhaps a new edition of the book will add some necessary detail and improve on the organization of some of the topics.

Book Description
Remarkably sustained advances in the development of new lasers and their applications in spectroscopy have prompted this revised and expanded edition of the highly successful
Introduction to Laser Spectroscopy, first published in 1995. In the new edition the editors have preserved the basic concept and structure, with the involvement of some new authors - all recognized experts in laser spectroscopy. Each chapter addresses a different technique, providing a review and analysis of the current status, and reporting some of the latest achievements. With the key formulas and methods detailed in many sections, this text represents a practicable handbook of its subject. It will be a valuable tool both for specialists to keep abreast of developments and for newcomers to the field needing an accessible introduction to specific methods of laser spectroscopy - and also as a resource for primary references.
The first two chapters lay out the technical details of the main laser systems now employed for spectroscopy, and then the principles and applications of absorption and fluorescence measurements. Following a description of Raman scattering, the development of pump-probe techniques is then traced. The next chapters deal more specifically with applications of laser-induced fluorescence, first addressing diagnostics for biochemical systems, and then applications to ordered systems. The use of tunable infrared lasers for the spectroscopy of transient species is discussed in the next chapter, followed by an introduction to optical nonlinearity focusing on its surface applications. The utilisation of nonlinear optics for tunable ultraviolet generation is then described and the penultimate chapter gives a description of femtosecond laser ionisation applied in mass spectrometry. The book concludes with a survey of the environmental applications of laser remote sensing.
Customer Reviews:
Taken from ChemPhysChem; October 2003.......2003-12-05
This book not only gives an overview of the basic principles but also reports about novelties in this research area mainly due to the development of new lasers. Despite the fact that there are several other books available dealing with the same subject, this book covers, in some chapters, recent state-of-the-art techniques which can't be found that way in other monographs but have gained in importance in recent years. The book is suited for undergraduate as well as graduate students in physics or chemistry, and for scientists who are planning to become active in this research area. I beleive that this book can provide useful illustrations for instructors in these fields who have to teach the subject to graduate or PhD students. For every reader this book provides a pedagogical approach to this research field which has gained or will still gain more and more importance in the recent or upcoming years, respectively.

Book Description
Betts presents a concise introduction to the experimental technicalities of low and ultralow temperature physics research. He has made extensive use of diagrams as aids to understanding, and refers the reader to the professional literature as soon as the level of the text is high enough. Topics covered include all aspects of low temperature technology, beginning with an introduction to the thermodynamic principles of refrigeration and thermometry. The text also covers the properties of fluid 3He/4He mixtures, and all the means of achieving low temperatures, including dilution and Pomeranchuk refrigeration and adiabatic nuclear demagnetization.

Customer Reviews:
good introduction.......2007-02-15
The previous review makes an unwarranted comparison to Hansen and Mcdonald, which is an unfriendly, technical, advanced-graduate-level book. This book (March and Tosi) is an attempt to write a simpler introduction accessible to undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It does not entirely succeed---the language is sometimes stiff, and some topics are mentioned for the sake of mentioning them rather than teaching them---but at least it covers many things that beginners need to know and who would just bounce off Hansen and Mcdonald having gained little more than a bruised ego.
The need for an ideal liquid-state book remains. Unfortunately, both these books were written by theorists. What is needed is a book written by a theorist and experimentalist together. And one that has better pictures, but without becoming one of those fluid dynamics engineering texts.
It's still difficult to write about liquids........2003-09-04
The subject has come on, and this I do not deny, but the unique position of liquids in the graduate curriculum still remains the same. It is a wide subject covering atomic liquids, dense plasmas and all sorts of novel nano- and meso-scale soft matter. Does this book address anything new for the graduate? Well, not really. The odd thing is that the classic Hansen and McDonald is still by far the best read and introduction - neither pampering nor being condescending to the reader, and only seeks to inform, without the worry of the pet interests of the authors. You can introduce solid-state physics in a single volume and come away feeling as though you have a comprehensive understanding, but this is not quite the case with liquids. Understand a balanced theoretical and experimental treatment as provided by Hansen and McDonald then look at the specific. Oddly enough, research in this area is quite fluid as of its own right, and subject to change, but certain core principles remain the same ... as do texts.

Book Description
There is a large and growing gap between what is covered in most elementary thermodynamics courses and what is used in current research on nonlinear phenomena encountered in solids. In an attempt to fill that gap, Professor Ericksen has drawn on his experience in research on solids, to devise a series of lectures for graduate students from various departments at the University of Minnesota. The aim is to introduce and illustrate uses of various important ideas with analysis which can be done, using elementary mathematics. Often, important applications involve using the thermodynamic theory of equilibrium. In part, this involves a strategy for designing experiments to determine equations of state. Simple strategies are discussed for thermoelastic bars and an ideal gas-solid mixture. A simple strategy can fail when instabilities are encountered. Illustrative examples of thermodynamic stability theory include rudimentary analysis of cold-drawing in polymers, martensitic transformations in plates, instabilities in rubber ballons and sheets, peeling tapes, breaking bars, buckling of beams and instabilities produced by electromagnetic fields in liquid crystals. Non-equilibrium theory is illustrated by head conduction in rigid and deformable bars, including a fairly common way of using the Clausius- Duhem inequality to get thermodynamic restrictions on constitutive equations. Also covered is some elementary one-dimensional theory of shock waves and slower-moving phase boundaries. Drawing on all these experiences, the final chapter treats general ideas in a more abstract way. Included here are discussions of some of the real difficulties.
Book Description
This title deals with the computer simulation of thermodynamic properties of many-body condensed-matter systems that use random numbers generated by a computer in physics and chemistry. It describes the theoretical background of several variants of these Monte Carlo methods and gives a systematic course by which newcomers can learn to perform such simulations and to analyze their results. This third edition has been updated and a new chapter on some important recent developments of the Monte Carlo methodology was added.
Customer Reviews:
A graduate level book (Review for the 4th edition).......2007-03-09
This is a nice little book written by two experts of the field. This edition is only an expanded version of earlier editions (by addition of two new chapters, the core of the book chapter 1 to 3 hasn't change at all). The book covers monte carlo techniques through various well-known examples (Ising model, random walk, percolation, self-avoiding random walk). I enjoyed reading the first 3 chapters of the book. In particular, chapter 3 guides the readers and gives them the chance to practice what they should have learned in previous chapter (through 53 exercises). The following 2 chapters (chapter 4 and 5) are not as nicely written. Moreover, there are some serious shortcoming in the book. (1) All codes are written in Fortran. While everyone who can program can easily understand the codes, Fortran belongs to the past and could have been ok for physics students during late 80's (first edition) but not for those at 2006. (2) The guide (chapter 3) should have been the last chapter and have covered subjects in chapters 4 and 5 (3) As I mentioned before, chapter 4 and 5 are not well-organized. (4) The book in general stresses too much on finite-size effects. However, it is an important subject and it tells us how we can scale our simulation result to more realistic cases. By my judgement, the book gives wrong impression about the degree of its importance.
I recommend graduate students who are serious about learning monte carlo methods to read Newman and Barkema book (Monte Carlo Methods in Statistical Physics) instead since it provides a broader view about the subject. Although I highly recommend those who are interested in the subject to go through chapter 3. It is fun and very instructive.

Physical Chemistry of Surfaces, 6th Edition
ASIN: 0471252395 |
Book Description
A comprehensive, authoritative introduction to the central issues in surface science.
This volume takes a practical, experimental approach to modern surface science. Professor John B. Hudson promotes an intuitive understanding of the concepts of surface science by using physical examples to illustrate basic surface structures and phenomena. Accessible and easy to read throughout, Surface Science provides a solid foundation from which to develop a conceptual understanding of the field.
Divided into four sections, Surface Science begins with descriptions of the structure, thermodynamics, and mobility of clean surfaces, then moves on to explore the interaction of gas molecules with solid surfaces. Next, Professor Hudson discusses the energetic particle interactions that are the basis for the majority of techniques developed to reveal the structure and chemistry of surfaces. The book concludes with a presentation of the background material involved in crystal nucleation and growth.
The product of more than three decades of experience in introducing students to surface science, this book includes:
* State-of-the-art surface analysis techniques
* Examples of phenomena and structures from current and classical works
* A comprehensive presentation that can be easily tailored to senior undergraduate and graduate courses in a variety of disciplines
* Extensive references and course-proven end-of-chapter problems.
Surface Science is an excellent textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and the physical sciences who want a general overview of surface science. It also provides important background information for researchers just starting out in the field. JOHN B. HUDSON, PhD, is Professor of Materials Science in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.

Surface Science by Hudson.......2007-02-17
The book is very experiment oriented and does not fulley explain the theoretical background of the topics in detail. For someone taking a first class in surface science, it fails to introduce the fundamentals of the topic in a systematic way. I'm a first year grad student and I don't recommend the book as an introduction to the topic. However, it deserves 3 stars because of its convincing explanations of experimental side of things.
Decent overview.......2002-05-20
With all due respect I disagree with the Corvallis writer.. I used the book during my postgarduate studies and it is a decent
intro into surface science. It does assume knowledge of crystallography, thermodynamics, atomic physics, and basic experimental surface study techniques; therefore it is not all that useful for undergrads in general.

Horrid..........1999-02-06
As a chemistry student trying to learn surface science, this book has done nothing but frustrate me. From the author's use of antiquated units, to horrid question writing, to lousy explanations, I would rather go into a laboratory blind than have this book guide me. To sum up, find another book if you aren't already an expert!

Book Description
In this invaluable book, macroscopic irreversible thermodynamics is presented in its realm and its splendor by appealing to the notion of internal variables of state. This applies to both fluids and solids with or without microstructures of mechanical or electromagnetic origin. This unmatched richness of essentially nonlinear behaviors is the result of the use of modern mathematical techniques such as convex analysis in a clear-cut framework which allows one to put under the umbrella of "irreversible thermodynamics" behaviors which until now have been commonly considered either not easily covered, or even impossible to incorporate into such a framework.
The book is intended for all students and researchers whose main concern is the rational modeling of complex and/or new materials with physical and engineering applications, such as those accounting for coupled-field, hysteresis, fracture, nonlinear-diffusion, and phase-transformation phenomena.
Book Description
Following the successes of Epic, High, and Rough Water, the latest addition to the Adrenaline series presents the most gripping rescue narratives. Rescue includes Doug Scott's account of saving himself by crawling off Pakistan's Ogre with two broken legs, and Spike Walker's story of the race to recover a king crab fisherman from the Bering Sea in midwinter. The book also includes an account of trying to rescue two canoeists battling hypothermia on a storm-tossed lake; Alison Osius's tale of two teenagers lost in the Great Gulf Wilderness of New Hampshire; and a missionary doctor and his dog team being blown out to sea on an iceberg off the coast of Labrador.

Another Winner!.......2000-12-04
'Rescue' carries on the series' tradition of choice excerpts (19) from well-and lesser-known authors. Therein lies the beauty of this series - I had never heard of Spike Walker (!) but after reading the riveting excerpt in 'Rescue' I ran out and bought both his books. Two of the selections are fiction, not my taste, but the other 17 tales of peril, shipwrecks, avalanches and plane crashes will have you reading all night. The stories range from professionals who take one risk too many to everyday folks who find themselves over their heads without warning. A great gift book for anyone who thrives on adventure and especially if you you know someone in search/rescue or the Coast Guard. Get all the books in this series - I have and I love 'em!
