Book Description
The author uses experimental evidence to show students how biochemical concepts are developed. For example, the experiments that led to discovery of the citric acid and urea cycles are described so students can see the scientific process that Hans Krebbs and his associates used. The author also covers experiments that led to the discoveries of glycogen phophoylase, the sigma factor, DNA polymerase, and other important enzymes.
Customer Reviews:
Making Biochemistry understandable.......2000-11-27
I would recomend this book to students on their first approach to Biochemistry. This is a confusing subject, with so many difficult names and processes, and this books makes all these understandable. It uses experimental facts to explain the characteristics and processes involved. You will find full-color illustrations and diagrams, that help making clear processes such as replication and transcription. Another outstanding feature in this book is that it includes clinical applications and laboratory techniques. At the end of the book you will find an Internet address book...really useful. It also has a glossary, in which you will find concise definitions of every important biochemical term. A fine book.

Book Description
Our understanding of the nature, origin, and biological roles of double-stranded RNA found in fungi, plants, and animals has advanced greatly during the last five years. Because these genetic elements are capable of replication, they can be used to manage fungal diseases of crops, vegetables, turfgrass, fruit, and forest trees using genetic means rather than by environmentally hazardous chemicals. And recent evidence suggests that the presence of small amounts of dsRNA elicits sequence-specific gene silencing, which may lead to the development of treatments aimed at silencing harmful genes causing serious diseases in animals and humans. dsRNA Genetic Elements: Concepts and Applications in Agriculture, Forestry, and Medicine compiles and unifies current knowledge of dsRNA genetic factors from different biological systems and discusses high-impact applications to agriculture, forestry, and medicine. It is a compilation of the latest advances on dsRNA systems from yeast, filamentous fungi, plants, and animals. This authoritative text is a valuable source of knowledge for a diverse audience from many areas of biology including molecular biology, genetics, and virology, as well as from applied fields in agriculture, forestry, and pharmaceutics.

Book Description
This book encompasses a wide range of important topics. The articles cover the following areas: asymptotic theory and inference, biostatistics, economics and finance, statistical computing and Bayesian statistics, and statistical genetics. Specifically, the issues that are studied include large deviation, deviation inequalities, local sensitivity of model misspecification in likelihood inference, empirical likelihood confidence intervals, uniform convergence rates in density estimation, randomized designs in clinical trials, MCMC and EM algorithms, approximation of p-values in multipoint linkage analysis, use of mixture models in genetic studies, and design and analysis of quantitative traits.
Customer Reviews:
good book.......2007-01-16
if you enjoy classic literature go ahead and read this one. It's well written, detailed, pretty good story.
an important, overlooked piece of 'chick-lit'.......2005-07-29
having never heard of fanny fern, i was mildly curious when assigned this book to read for my 'literature of the american renaissance class' a few semesters ago.
it's nice to see something of a renewed interested in fanny fern's work. in this same class we read 'little women' and i found both books highly enjoyable. however, ruth hall manages to stick its canines a little deeper into traditional chick-lit skins. make no mistake, this book has some teeth, and rightfully so.
ruth hall is essentially fanny fern's semi-autobiographical (but what i know, it's pretty much taken directly from her own life and experiences. a quick look at the plot: ruth ahll loses her husband and is forced to deal with less than kind in-laws. she's a very talented writer and supports herself and her two children by writing newspaper columnists. The novel recounts one woman's attempt to rise above social/gender discrimination and supposed gender roles to become one of the most successful writers (female or male) of her time. one can't help read ruth hall as a jab at fanny fern's detractors and naysayers. it's sort of an 'i-told-you-so-so-take-that!' and more power to her.
i enjoyed this novel quite a bit (and yes, i'm a guy), despite the occassional lapse into melodrama and and over-wrought sentimentality. fanny fern was indeed a skilled writer and should be looked at more carefully, both by academics and students. an often overlooked, nevertheless, important author.
Ruth Hall: American Woman's Odessy.......2000-10-09
This is a fasinating account of a single mother's experience in the mid-nineteenth century. Fanny Fern, pen name of Sara willis Parton, fictionalized her own experiences to create this account of life for a woman on her own in the 1850's. Fern's wryly ironic style and hold no punches revelations earned her fame and fortune and more than a small amount of criticism. If you thought all women were straightlaced and demure 150 years ago read this and learn.
