Book Description
This state-of-the-art book on how form is described in primate biology, and its consequences for function and behavior, includes contributions by internationally renowned researchers of quantitative primate evolutionary morphology. Each chapter elaborates upon the analysis of the form-function-behavior triad. The book is unique, therefore, not only in the diversity of the topics discussed, but in the range of levels of biological organization addressed--from cellular morphometrics to the evolution of primate ecology.

An important refernce work.......2006-07-06
This is an edited collection of state of the art papers on the description of biological form in primates and the implications of this form on function and behavior. The analysis of the form-function-behavior triad is presented in each chapter as an interesting and most importantly, understandable narrative. Most other works of this nature are highly specialized, applicable to only a few scientists capable of understanding what is essentially a very complex subject. This book is unique in that it covers a diversity of topics on a wide range of levels, from cellular morphometrics to the evolution of primate functional morphology. Even though the reader may have a primary interest in only one or two chapters, it follows that the other chapters will be read, thereby expanding the views of the reader.
The book is essentially a "Festschrift" to Charles E. Oxnard, who is a pioneer on metric and analytic techniques which have been combined with his meticulous comparative functional analysis of primate anatomy. Each contributor in this book, "Shaping Primate Evolution", has in some way been influenced by Professor Oxnard's work and this is expressed by the remarkable diversity of topics. The editors, Fred Anapol, Rebecca Z. German, and Nina G. Jabolinski, themsenves highly regarded scholars, have done an excellent job in bringing together the work of a number of internationally recognized scientists in a single volume. A dedication, in the form of this work, is appropriate in light of the remarkable achievements of Professor Oxnard over roughly fifty years. In much of what is written, he has managed to express algebraic complexity in words, which for "mere mortals" is a relief and makes what is ordinarily meant for a selsct few, an enjoyable reading experience for most. In particular, three works by Oxnard worth getting (these have become quite scarce), are; "Form and pattern in human evolution - some mathematical, physical and engineering approaches" (1973), "Uniqueness and diversity in human evolution - morphometric studies of Australopithecines" (1975) and "The Order of Man" (1983).
For those interested in primate form, function and evolution, this reference work is a must!

Review with no title.......2000-08-12
This review was based on the 2000 version, the newest one, of the College Chemistry. After studying this as a guildline to the subject of Chemistry, I found out that this book had very good and short explanations of all the important concepts. However, this study guild's value had been destoried because the amount of misprints and errors in the example problems. This book seemed to be rushed to meet the 2000 year time. Therefore, the mistakes in it was overlooked. To learn concepts, the book is a very good aid, however to look at the examples, it is very poor and sad to see those simple mistakes.

Customer Reviews:
Good study reference.......2005-12-05
Back in the good ol' days I went through more than a couple study guides - maybe I needed more help than others? I really liked the Harper guide - it is very readable and includes relevant problems for each chapter. The book is definitely geared toward your first year of o-chem: there aren't any more advance topics. The book works well as an aid and reference for classroom work as it's a bit too breezy to be a self-study guide. Still, though, I think it's the best of the study helps.
Good review/reference.......2002-07-17
I used this book as a reference for my second semester organic chemistry course. It worked very well to reinforce concepts presented in my class textbook, and as a review for the first semester material (we had a comprehensive 1st and 2nd semester final). The question/answer format worked for me -- some people might find it annoying, though. This is not the book to use if you're looking for straight-forward, tabular listings of reactions. I would recommend it as a backup presentation of class material.
The reason I give this book only 3 stars is that it had an inexcusable number of mistakes and misspellings, way too many to have made it past a competent editor. I found the errors to be distracting and at times it made me wonder if some of the chemistry in the text might also be in error!
Very Good Affordable Reference.......2000-06-19
This book has a lot to offer for a very small price. Other paperback OChem review books skimp on content -- that is not the case with this one. In some cases this book has more detail than my college text book does.
It is organized as a series of questions, for example "What is the structure of Lithium Aluminum Hydride?" instead of the standard Topic/subtopic format. I didn't find this to be an asset, but I got used to it. The diagrams are hardly flashy, but they get the point across. I needed an Organic Chem reference because I teach an MCAT Prep course. This book is well organized and complete. I would definately recommend buying it!

Customer Reviews:
It is Organic Chemistry, what can I say?.......2007-09-06
As Organic Chem. books go, this is the best one I ever got. It is also the only one I own, but that doesn't matter.
Excellent Text (used the 1st Edition).......2007-07-15
Several sample problems are worked out in every chapter after each new concept to illustrate the material covered. They are all very clearly explained.
In addition, there are also more than enough problems at the end of each chapter to help students better understand the topics covered, however the answers are not provided in the back of the textbook (this is precisely why the solutions manual is a must buy).
I have worked all the problems presented from chapter 1 to chapter 21 (to include the end of chapter problems), and I have encountered only two or three "bad problems" for which the answers were not explained clearly. Almost every answer to every problem is clearly illustrated - some concepts are even better explained in the solutions manual than in the textbook!
I'd wish the buyer good luck in this class, but I doubt any disciplined, devoted student would need it after using this text with the solution manual.
Best Organic Text Around.......2006-07-25
I'm currently teaching a two semester organic chem course using professor Smith's book. In my opinion this is the best organic text currently available. The book and the accompanying solutions manual are almost totally free of typographical and conceptual errors. The organization and presentation are done with marvelous clarity; the book is visually beautiful; and the author communicates her enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject in every chapter. My only minor criticism: I'd like to see a little more historical perspective and acknowledgement of the contributions of the 19th and early 20th century giants who created organic chemisty.
Great O-Chem Book!.......2006-04-20
This book clearly teaches one how to do organic chemistry. I got an A in Organic Chemistry, but if I didn't have this book I would have failed. This book explains everything the professor didn't. It has a great study guide solutions manual, which gives details to the answers of all the problems.
Worst O. Chem. Text.......2006-02-21
There are many mistakes in this book in many of the mechanisms. Many of the mechanisms are not completely drawn out and are missing many arrows and non-bonded/lone pair electrons. Compared to other O.Chem. textbooks that I have read, this one does not flow in a manner that is very easy to follow and the frequent mistakes make it even more difficult. I would not recommend this book to any professor or student taking O.Chem.

Book Description
This independent account of modern ideas in differential geometry shows how they can be used to understand and extend classical results in integral geometry. The authors explore the influence of total curvature on the metric structure of complete, non-compact Riemannian 2-manifolds, although their work can be extended to more general spaces. Each chapter features open problems, making the volume a suitable learning aid for graduate students and non-specialists who seek an introduction to this modern area of differential geometry.
Download Description
This is a self-contained account of how some modern ideas in differential geometry can be used to tackle and extend classical results in integral geometry. The authors investigate the influence of total curvature on the metric structure of complete, non-compact Riemannian 2-manifolds, though their work, much of which has never appeared in book form before, can be extended to more general spaces. Many classical results are introduced and then extended by the authors. The compactification of complete open surfaces is discussed, as are Busemann functions for rays. Open problems are provided in each chapter, and the text is richly illustrated with figures designed to help the reader understand the subject matter and get intuitive ideas about the subject. The treatment is self-contained, assuming only a basic knowledge of manifold theory, so is suitable for graduate students and non-specialists who seek an introduction to this modern area of differential geometry.

The Inhabited Woman.......2007-09-11
Reading The Inhabited Woman (La mujer habitada) is, for a gringo such as myself, a transcultural experience. It is written in a vividly sensual, lyrical style that brings to life the culture of its unnamed Central American setting--presumed to be Nicaragua, Belli's homeland.
Faguas (read "Managua") stirred her pores, her zest for life. Faguas was sensuality. Body open, wide, sinuous; a woman's disorderly breasts made of earth, scattered about the landscape. Threatening. Beautiful. (translation mine)
Even in moments of irony, her descriptions retain this poetic quality:
From the street she could see the escalator, the great novelty, the only one in the whole country. The store had had to station janitors in the doorway to keep out the ragged little newspaper boys who, in the first days, ruined the pleasure of the elegant ladies being electronically elevated to consumerism.
This is above all the story of a young woman finding her place in a male-dominated society, in the professional world, in relationships, and in a dangerous time of social rebellion. Thus it examines in thoughtful detail both the interpersonal and the intrapersonal.
Lately Lavinia didn't understand herself. She didn't understand why it put her in a bad mood that Felipe didn't talk to her about the Movement. She didn't want to be in the Movement, she repeated to herself. And yet, to speak about it and ask about it had become an irrational attraction. A constant temptation, an inexplicable incitement. And she never imagined Felipe holding her back, containing her, denying her the knowledge.
The Inhabited Woman is deeply spiritual as well as political. The protagonist is aided in her self-discovery by the reborn spirit of a Native woman whose people had resisted the Spanish conquest five centuries earlier. (It's only fair to warn you that this history takes a grotesque turn at times.) Through this and other connections, Belli empowers us to feel the interrelatedness of the protagonist, her compatriots, her homeland, and ourselves. La mujer habitada is a powerful read, not just because of where it takes us but because of how it gets us there.
A Story of courage and passion.......2001-03-05
This is a unique story that intertwines the struggle and bravery of past warriors with the ones of today. For anyone who loves to read a book about human passion and love. For anyone who can relate to the feeling of belonging to a culture and being able to die for ideals, a country and family, will definitely find in this book the the inner rebel that many of us have against unjustice and abuse.
La Mujer Habitada.......2000-09-08
After almost a year of looking for this book I finally read it. This book is great it's about this beautiful archited named Lavina she is very independent and strong. She live in Nicaragua, in a time when rebellion was dangerous. She risk her life by entering this malisha group and she also falls in love. This story is passionate and very sad. Their is a ghost of this warrier women living in Lavina's tree, she studies her and goes into her mind, thoughts and dreams.
Book Description
Lavinia is The Inhabited Woman: accomplished, independent, and fiercely modern. She is sheltered and self-involved, until the spirit of an Indian woman warrior enters her being, then she dares to join a revolutionary movement against a violent dictator and—through the power of love—finds the courage to act.
The Wisconsin edition is for sale only in North America.

Best Living Latin American Writer?.......2005-02-28
Quick, name the ten top novelists from Nicaragua. Give Up? Well extend it then to the top ten from anywhere in Latin America.
After reading this book you will almost certainly put Gioconca Belli on this list. The Inhabited Woman is Lavinia, a modern woman of our time, she becomes 'inhabited' by the spirit of an Indian woman warrior and she joins the revolution against a violent dictator.
At least semi-biographical, Ms. Belli joined the revolutionary Nicaraguan FSLN in 1970 until forced to leave the country in 1975. After Somoza was ousted and th Sandinistas came to power she entered Government service to 1986 when she resigned in to write full time.
THE INHABITED WOMAN.......2003-12-29
As a retired English teacher longing for a "good read". I was delighted from the first chapter of Inhabited Woman. The concept of one woman from one period/culture being a factor in another woman's life sent a tingle through me. As I read on, I was excited in the insights gained by the main character. As she struggled with choices, I found myself rethinking my life and values. The characters are well drawn and the plot complex enough to be interesting. Furthermore, the author's use of langauge and images is sometimes almost poetry. BRAVO!!
REVIEW QUOTES.......2001-09-28
Gioconda Belli is one of Nicaragua's most highly regarded writers. Her poetry and fiction have been published in Spain, Mexico, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Finland, Greece and Turkey. She currently lives in Los Angeles. THE INHABITED WOMAN was awarded "Best Literary Work of the Year" by the Union of German Publishers and Editors.
"[It] is a passionate story of love, courage, solidarity and death, where reality and legend blend harmoniously. The lives of the characters are intertwined with the destiny of a country and the struggle of a people for dignity. There is so much truth in this book, that it is impossible for the reader to remain indifferent. This is a story that needed to be told and Belli does it with talent." --Isabel Allende
"THE INHABITED WOMAN is engrossing, reading like an action adventure...[it] opens on a stunning, magical note..." --The Daily News
"THE INHABITED WOMAN revitalizes two literary genres that in recent years seemed to have lost their grips on the imagination of new writers and, as a matter of course, readers-magic realism and social realism." --The Hartford Courant
A must.......2001-03-30
This is a book that is a must because it helps to understand (or at least to have another point of view) about latin american "guerrillas", but also about the subtle and not so subtle differences between men and women, that havent changed so much in hundred years. Going back to the past (to the spaniard invasion)and forward to our days, Belli knits a unique beautiful story of two eras distant in time, but very close in their needs. Not perfect in its "literary structure", but an original, passionate and enlighten story.
