        Book Description

Over the past few decades, the excitation and ionization of atmospheric gases has become an area of intense research. A large amount of data have been accumulated concerning the various elementary processes which occur when photons, electrons and ions collide with atoms and molecules. This scattered information has now been collected in a handbook for the first time, and the authors give a critical analysis of relevant data. This book is a comprehensive and detailed study of the available information and is distinguished by the following outstanding features: the consideration of a large number of atmospheric constituents, including H^O2, H, N^O2, N, O^O2, O, CO, CO^O2, H^O2O, HCl and some hydrocarbons the maximum number of space particles, including magnetospheric particles, are considered as projectiles: photons, electrons, hydrogen atoms, protons and helium ionsthe energy range under study corresponds to the real spectrum of cosmic fluxes, from threshold values for elementary processes up to several thousand keV the recommended values of cross sections, obtained from analysis of the available experimental data, are given in the handbook and their accuracy is estimated. These features make the handbook particularly valuable to specialists in the aeronomy of planets, comets and active perturbations, as well as to experimentalists and theoreticians working in the fields of plasma physics, atomic and molecular physics, physics of the upper atmosphere, chemical physics, optics and spectroscopy.

        Book Description

The book reviews our present knowledge of collision-induced absorption of infrared radiation in dense gases. The book starts with a recapitulation of essential background information. Experimental results for the absorption spectra are next discussed. Then the causes and properties of dipole moments induced by molecular interactions are reviewed. Two following chapters present the theory of collision-induced absorption in monatomic gas mixtures and in molecular gases and mixtures. The final chapter discusses related phenomena and important applications in astrophysics. The book is a practical guide for the spectroscopic dealing with dense, neutral fluids.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A250763. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In solving the Boltzmann transport equation, most discrete ordinates codes calculate the source term by first approximating the scattering cross section using a Legendre polynomial expansion. Such expansions are insufficient when scattering is anisotropic and the Legendre expansion is truncated prematurely. This can lead to nonphysical negative cross sections, negative source terms and negative angular fluxes. While negative sources are problematic for standard discrete ordinates methods leading to poor convergence or convergence to incorrect results, they are of particular concern to exponential methods, causing such calculations to fail. We've developed and tested a new technique to solve this problem called the Monte Carlo Facet Method. This method is an extension of standard Monte Carlo techniques. It guarantees non-negative cross sections at all directional ordinates. It also ensures within group and next group scatter. This dissertation outlines previous attempts to handle anisotropic scattering to achieve non-negative sources. It develops the theory of the Monte Carlo facet method and its first angular moment conservation. Results are presented examining the scattering matrices for various materials, and finally demonstrating that these scattering matrices perform exceptionally well in a multi-group, anisotropic, unstructured mesh discrete ordinates transport code.

                  Book Description

"Markov modeling has long been accepted as a fundamental and powerful technique for the fault tolerance analysis of mission-critical applications. However, the elaborate computations required have often made Markov modeling too time-consuming to be of practical use on these complex systems. With this hands-on tool, designers can use the Markov modeling technique to analyze safety, reliability, maintainability, and cost-effectiveness factors in the full range of complex systems in use today.

Featuring ground-breaking simulation software and a comprehensive reference manual, MARKOV MODELING FOR RELIABILITY ANALYSIS helps system designers surmount the mathematical computations that have previously prevented effective reliability analysis. The text and software compose a valuable self-study tool that is complete with detailed explanations, examples, and a library of Markov models that can be used for experiments and as derivations for new simulation models. The book details how these analyses are conducted, while providing hands-on instruction on how to develop reliability models for the full range of system configurations.

Computer-Aided Rate Modeling and Simulation (CARMS) software is an integrated modeling tool that includes a diagram-based environment for model setup, a spreadsheet like interface for data entry, an expert system link for automatic model construction, and an interactive graphic interface for displaying simulation results."

                  1. Book is for new complex computer systems. However I use in support of an aging Naval Aviation Aircraft ( A/C ). I am no mathematician, however with my trusty ERA books on Calculus, Statistics, and Vector Calculus, I was able to " tread the waters ". I have performed many, many Reliability & Support Analysis, and CARMS provides another very usefull tool. Math majors should have no difficulty with the subject matter, however applying this is the high light of the book;
                  2. I have been very unsucessfull in trying to reach the authors to make recommendations on the next revision. I request assistance, and will leave my employment phone number below. Thanks.

                      Book Description

"All too often, Festschriften consist of contributions on all sorts of unrelated topics, and result in a charming mixture of extravagance and indulgence, which is supposed to be enjoyed first and foremost by the recipient. Sometimes such books serve as repositories for articles too eccentric in subject or in approach, or too sloppy in execution, to be published in scientific journals: what the journals cannot appreciate, the Festschrift editor often cannot refuse.

This is absolutely not the case with this volume, which is by any standard an outstanding one. Its excellent quality and timely publication owe much to the efforts of the editors...and of the publishing house Birkhäuser. They have produced a Festschrift worthy of its ceremonial function in the career of an extremely influential scientist, educator, and engineer, and a book that also manages to give us a glimpse of the state-of-the-art in several important areas of signal processing and system and control theory.... A large number of readers will find in this volume a great deal to be learned and to be informed about, and the modest price of the book puts it within reach of the wide readership (graduate students, scientists, and engineers) it deserves."

                      — International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control

This festschrift volume pays tribute to Hidenori Kimura and his outstanding achievements in control theory, signal processing, and modeling. The 20 invited contributions presented here are an outgrowth of a symposium held in November 2001 in Tokyo, Japan, celebrating Kimura's 60th birthday. Reflecting his recent research interests, the symposium was entitled "Cybernetics in the 21st Century: Information and Complexity in Control Theory."

The chapters are classified into five main areas related to Kimura's work: signal processing, identification, robust control, hybrid, chaotic and nonlinear systems, and control applications. Many of the contributions highlight real-world and industrial applications.

Comprehension of complex systems comes from an understanding of not only the behavior of constituent elements but how they act together to form the behavior of the whole. However, given the multidisciplinary nature of complex systems, the scattering of information across different areas creates a chaotic situation for those trying to understand possible solutions and applications. Modeling and Control of Complex Systems brings together a number of research experts to present some of their latest approaches and future research directions in a language accessible to system theorists. Contributors discuss complex systems such as networks for modeling and control of civil structures, vehicles, robots, biomedical systems, fluid flow systems, and home automation systems. Each chapter provides theoretical and methodological descriptions of a specific application in the control of complex systems, including congestion control in computer networks, autonomous multi-robot docking systems, modeling and control in cancer genomics, and backstepping controllers for stabilization of turbulent flow PDEs. With this unique reference, you will discover how complexity is dealt with in different disciplines and learn about the latest methodologies, which are applicable to your own specialty. The balanced mix of theory and simulation presented by Modeling and Control of Complex Systems supplies a strong vehicle for enlarging your knowledge base a fueling future advances and incredible breakthroughs.

                                    Book Description

Through readings of works by Marivaux, Diderot, Rousseau, and Mary Shelley, David Marshall provides a new interpretation of the eighteenth-century preoccupation with theatricality and sympathy. Sympathy is seen not as an instance of sensibility or natural benevolence but rather as an aesthetic and epistemological problem that must be understood in relation to the problem of theatricality.

Placing novels in the context of eighteenth-century writing about theater, fiction, and painting, Marshall argues that an unusual variety of authors and texts were concerned with the possibility of entering into someone else's thoughts and feelings. He shows how key eighteenth-century works reflect on the problem of how to move, touch, and secure the sympathy of readers and beholders in the realm of both "art" and "life." Marshall discusses the demands placed upon novels to achieve certain effects, the ambivalence of writers and readers about those effects, and the ways in which these texts can be read as philosophical meditations on the differences and analogies between the experiences of reading a novel, watching a play, beholding a painting, and witnessing the spectacle of someone suffering. The Surprising Effects of Sympathy traces the interaction of sympathy and theater and the artistic and philosophical problems that these terms represent in dialogues about aesthetics, moral philosophy, epistemology, psychology, autobiography, the novel, and society.
