Principles and Practices of Unbiased Stereology: An Introduction for Bioscientists

Book Description
Stereology is the science that relates three-dimensional structure to the two-dimensional images that can be measured. The most common field of application is in microscopy, both of man-made materials (metals, ceramics, composites, etc.) and of biological tissue samples. This book covers the applications and terminology of both fields. Recent emphasis in stereology is concerned with sampling strategies to avoid bias due to directionality and non-uniformity, and these methods are fully covered. So are the classic techniques that measure size distributions, surface curvature, etc., which are widely useful but not discussed in other recent texts. Finally, most stereology is taught as manual procedures using counting and grids, but this text also covers the use of modern desktop computers for image analysis and processing to obtain and interpret the stereological data.

Book Description
In Unbiased Steriology, the authors present a practical guide to making unbiased 3D measurements using microscopy. Stereology is the statistical inference of geometric parameters from spatially sampled information; it is considered unbiased whent he test probes are positioned in an appropriately random manner. Now that unbiased stereology is required for nerve-cell counts in neurotoxicology by the FDA and by many journals before the acceptance of an article or study, this book is essential reading. It includes only those stereological techniques that have been tried and tested by actual application. Although these techniques are essentially mathematical--unbiased stereology is a quantitative rather than qualitative approach to microscopy-the authors do not immerse the reader in complex theories. Instead, they provide simple heuristic explanations and references to the original proof, illustrating the theory with analogies draw from everyday experience. Exercises-provided at the end of each chapter, complete with detailed worked answers-have been developed by the authors or donated by other expert stereologists to give practical experience using the techniques. Specific topis covered include: random sampling and random geometry; the estimation of feature volume, surface, length, number and mean particle size; as well as statistics for stereologists.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely useful for all interested in true quantification.......1999-02-02
This is an excellent book for all those interested in true quantification of tissue elements. Here, methods are outlined, amply illustrated and put forward in the form of exercises making it a pleasure even for the novice reader to get an understanding of what stereology is and what it is for. Now, the day seems near when researchers report their results on quantitative tissue features based on stereological estimation procedures. Highly recommended for serious morphologists.

Book Description
The dynamic modeling and analysis of advertising competition continues to be a topic of importance to scholars and practitioners. The second edition of
Dynamic Models Of Advertising Competition reviews empirical and analytical research on the topic and extends the research through analytical and numerical investigation.
Three types of model frameworks - Lanchester, Vidale-Wolfe, and diffusion - are combined with two different approaches to developing competitive advertising strategies - perfect equilibria and dynamic conjectural variations - in the analysis of duopoly and triopoly competition. Advertising strategies developed with the different approaches are compared and contrasted to open-loop strategies.
Book Description
From war-torn Afghanistan, through the snow-capped Himalayas and across the burning sands of the Taklamakan desert, to a rapidly modernizing China and on to the Central American jungles: it is an impossible journey, but one that Gary Geddes eagerly undertook in order to retrace the voyage of the legendary 5th-century Buddhist monk Huishen. Geddes was long fascinated with stories of Huishen’s life and travels: this Afghan holy man fled Kabul for China and may have crossed the Pacific to North America 1,000 years before Columbus.
The length and breadth of this expedition, and its difficulty, would have been amazing enough on its own, but Geddes’s trip takes on an added dimension and poignancy due to its timing: he reaches Afghanistan one month before September 11, 2001 and arrives in China as the tragic events unfold.
Along the way, Geddes encounters Afghan refugees, Pakistani dissidents, Tibetan monks, Buddhist scholars, a KFC outlet in Luoyang, mysterious cairns in Haida Gwaii, and ghostly remains in Mexico. As the Silk Road morphs into superhighways, ancient sculptures turn into military targets, Geddes glimpses, in the collision of past and present history, important clues for imagining a workable future.
Customer Reviews:
Bad Company.......2007-08-02
The premise of this book is wonderful - tracing the path of a Buddhist monk who is reputed to have traveled from Afghanistan, across China, and on to the Amreicas in the 5th century. One might expect, at the least, that a poet writing about his travels would produce a book that would have beautiful descriptions of people, places and things. At best, one could hope for exploration of insights and thoughts about what it is to be a traveler - actually and metaphorically, and speculation about the spiritual import of such a journey.
Unfortunately, what we get in this book is a collection of places vaguely described by a depressed man who spends most of his time writing about himself and his reaction to the places so ill-described. Frankly, this self-described "grumpy" man is not very good company for this trip, and all we are left with is a sense of trip of wonderful possibilities unrealized. The only thing impossible about this journey is the writer.
A Passionate, Engaging Journey.......2005-03-12
Explore Gary Geddes' emotionally charged, spiritual terrain with him as he passionately traces the pre-Columbian steps of Afghan monk, Huishen, to North America. The compelling poetic prose, humorous at times, subtly reveals much about the political concerns of China, the Middle East, and Central America while transporting the reader into a significant adventure that is both history lesson and pure escapism. Comparatively, think about doing the dishes while singing along to Bob Marley's "One Love/People Get Ready." It's at once engaging and liberating.
Book Description
This important book--shot through with reflections on, explorations of, and hymns to both our natural and spiritual realms--features the three poetry collections Charles Wright published during the 1980s: The Southern Cross (1981), The Other Side of the River (1984), and Zone Journals (1988).
Customer Reviews:
Appropriate introduction to the works of a master.......2005-12-31
This collection begins with "Homage to Paul Cezanne," one of Wright's most accessible poems and the first poem I would pick to teach students about metaphor. It begins:
The dead are a cadmium blue.
We spread them with palette knives in broad blocks and planes.
We layer them stroke by stroke
In steps and ascending mass, in verticals raised from the earth.
We choose, and layer them in,
Blue and a blue and a breath,
Circle and smudge, cross-beak and buttonhook,
We layer them in. We squint hard and terrace them line by line.
You can see in this passage the seeds of the lulling rhythm, like walking meditation, that has become Wright's signature: "Blue and a blue and a breath." In the fifteen years since this book was issued, Wright has refined his technique to become master of the minimalist nature lyric; this relatively early collection showcases the transition from poet to genius as the author gropes for and finds his music.
Wright's work is among the best literature to come out of the South this century, and he is only improving with time. I can only assume that the entire Appalachian Book of the Dead series will be reprinted in one gigantic tome sometime in the next decade or two. In the meantime, if you can't afford to buy each of his books now, springing for this one is a great place to start.
Truly beautiful.......2004-02-08
This collection of poems is truly beautiful. Some of the material in here is accessible to anyone while some of it is more essoteric. Being a collection, it covers a wide range of work, some of which I like more than others. When Wright succeeds, though, he does so more brilliantly than any other contemporary poet I know of.
Book Description
Chinese workers in the third century b.c. created seven thousand life-sized terracotta soldiers to guard the tomb of the First Emperor. In the eleventh century a.d., Chinese builders constructed a pagoda from as many as thirty thousand separately carved wooden pieces. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, China exported more than a hundred million pieces of porcelain to the West. As these examples show, the Chinese throughout history have produced works of art in astonishing quantities--and have done so without sacrificing quality, affordability, or speed of manufacture. How have they managed this? Lothar Ledderose takes us on a remarkable tour of Chinese art and culture to explain how artists used complex systems of mass production to assemble extraordinary objects from standardized parts or modules. As he reveals, these systems have deep roots in Chinese thought--in the idea that the universe consists of ten thousand categories of things, for example--and reflect characteristically Chinese modes of social organization.
Ledderose begins with the modular system par excellence: Chinese script, an ancient system of fifty thousand characters produced from a repertoire of only about two hundred components. He shows how Chinese artists used related modular systems to create ritual bronzes, to produce the First Emperor's terracotta army, and to develop the world's first printing systems. He explores the dazzling variety of lacquerware and porcelain that the West found so seductive, and examines how works as diverse as imperial palaces and paintings of hell relied on elegant variation of standardized components. Ledderose explains that Chinese artists, unlike their Western counterparts, did not seek to reproduce individual objects of nature faithfully, but sought instead to mimic nature's ability to produce limitless numbers of objects. He shows as well how modular patterns of thought run through Chinese ideas about personal freedom, China's culture of bureaucracy, Chinese religion, and even the organization of Chinese restaurants.
Originally presented as a series of Mellon lectures at the National Gallery of Art, Ten Thousand Things combines keen aesthetic and cultural insights with a rich variety of illustrations to make a profound new statement about Chinese art and society.
Customer Reviews:
showcases millennia of Chinese art.......2007-02-15
To a reader not from China, Ledderose gives an eloquent and graceful exposition of thousands of years of Chinese art. Within this, he considers Chinese script to be an intrinsic art form. Millennia ago, China made this decisive choice for the written form of their language. Whereas in the Middle East and thence in Europe, alphabets were the other preference. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The main disadvantage of the script is that each symbol must be memorised for its meaning and pronunciation. But by decoupling a symbol from its sound, Chinese scripts from centuries or millennia ago can still be mostly correctly read. Ledderose makes the point that as pronunciations change, or political boundaries change, alphabet-based writings tend to undergo changes. Hence the fracturing of Latin into the various European languages after the Roman empire fell. These are good points that Ledderose makes. Though he also acknowledges that alphabets are far easier for the user to learn.
Most of the book describes other art forms in China. Accompanied by many photos, including several in colour, that illustrate examples of these forms. Examples shown date back to the Bronze Age, as in seals used by nobles. Even then, the artistry was intricate and meticulous.
An indispensable insight into Chinese thought.......2003-09-26
This is one of the clearest and most insightful examinations of ancient Chinese aesthetics and related philosophical and philogical materials that has been produced in the English language. We owe Prof. Ledderose a great debt of gratitude for having taken the care to lay out in such a readable volume the gist of a pragmatic approach to the creation of art and artifact that came to predominate throughout thousands of years of Chinese culture. His examination of the modular construction of the Chinese written language is compelling. The book should be required reading for students of any and all disciplines that begin with the phrase "traditional Chinese", be they students of medicine, martial arts, meditation, music, painting, or any other of a long list of subjects that have been influenced by the approach to thought and logic that is revealed in its pages.
Book Description
The Ten Thousand Things is a novel of shimmering strangeness—the story of Felicia, who returns with her baby son from Holland to the Spice Islands of Indonesia, to the house and garden that were her birthplace, over which her powerful grandmother still presides. There Felicia finds herself wedded to an uncanny and dangerous world, full of mystery and violence, where objects tell tales, the dead come and go, and the past is as potent as the present. First published in Holland in 1955, Maria Dermoût's novel was immediately recognized as a magical work, like nothing else Dutch—or European—literature had seen before. The Ten Thousand Things is an entranced vision of a far-off place that is as convincingly real and intimate as it is exotic, a book that is at once a lament and an ecstatic ode to nature and life.

literary fragments.......2007-05-14
what i find most striking about the other reviews of this book is their failure to comment on the fact that this is not a novel.it's a collection of fused fragments.there is a good novella here ,three pretty good short stories and a pair of bookends.the bookends are a literary device aimed at contriving a unity that doesn't flow from what you read.there is a rather boring "foreward" and a moderately more interesting "afterward".i suspect that either the author or an editor concluded rightly that there wasn't much of a market for the fragments of an unknown elderly writer . hence it was decided, this was going to be a novel even if it wasn't.what difference does it make ? well i was so bored by the"lovely","atmoospheric","foreward" that i almost stopped reading the book. i assumed this was an integral part of a novel and not a good portent. as it turns out you can easily skip this part and get on to the meat of the book.in most instances you'll be glad you did.dermout was a good writer.she wasn't a novelist.knowing that will probably increase most peoples pleasure in reading the book ,particularly those who are impatient with seemingly unending description.i almost hate to say it but dermout would have benefited from reading simenon.
Marvelous and Mysterious.......2004-10-31
This book is nothing short of beautiful. It's descriptions are poetic and transporting. Reading this book is like being privy to the dream life of another, a tantalizing keyhole peep into an enchanting, and sometimes terrifying, dream landscape of a vanished era. Things in Dermout's world are magical and mysterious, but there is a reasuring sense of order that is conveyed both in the narrative (a catalog of things) and in the perfect craft of her writing.
"A singular, mysterious book like nothing else".......2004-09-01
Published in Holland in 1955, this has earned a lot of praise for being a singular, mysterious book like nothing else. It's the story of a Indonesian, Felicia, who returns from Holland to her native Indonesia with her baby son.
Beautiful & True to the Place.......2004-01-19
Much has been said in praise of this book before, so I would only like to add that not only is it beautifully written, but it also reflects a deep understanding of the place where the story unfolds. Thus the author paints a realistic (though sad) picture of the Moluccas and their people, rather than just using them as an exotic background to her story.
Finely crafted.......2003-09-03
Maria Dermout's 'The Ten Thousand Things' is a finely crafted piece of writing. This really is a classic in so many ways. A brilliant book well worth the read.

Dancing with Ten Thousand Things, offers readers practical tools to create more joy and fulfillment in both their personal and professional lives. Using the ancient wisdom of nature as a guide we are shown how to let go of the ways of thinking and being that hold us back from being fully alive. By putting into practice these tools we learn ways to build and sustain meaningful and productive relationships with our friends, family and in our workplaces. Anyone seeking more effectiveness at home or in their work must read this book and start working the principles.
Getting Specific about Making Change.......2007-07-07
It is possible to have large goals or vague plans about being a different person, or having a transformed life, and never quite get on the road. The beauty of Tom Balles' book is that you have a road map for concrete action. His years of practice in acupuncture, coaching, and living intentionallly have born fruit. Now any reader can benefit immediately. This is a wonderful book to read slowly, carefully, and, with the clarity of small steps, life will present more possibilities. I'm grateful for Tom's wisdom and guidance at Tai Sophia Institute, and in living.
Dancing with the Ten Thousand Things.......2007-07-02
This book offers a practical, clear and concise description of using various principles, including those based in nature, to apply to one's life and the world around us. Mr. Balles offers examples of different ways of being to bring about less unneccessary suffering and to help create openness for creating possibilities with oneself, relationships with others and with larger groups (ie. communities, the work place, etc.). He describes different ways of viewing the world, our relationships and ourselves. His descriptions and examples of learning from the seasons are easy to understand and thorough, which aids the reader in having a greater connection with nature and therefore the natural order of all things. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in experiencing a greater peace within and around themselves while increasing the positive contribution they make to the world around them.
