Book Description
Across America and around the world, people are
working to help nature heal itself. In Bermuda, a man
single-handedly grows thousands of trees on a small
island to restore nesting habitat for a rare seabird. In
Illinois, legions of volunteers replant prairies in the
shadows of freeways. In Virginia, a farmer works to
bring back the mighty American chestnut.
What drives these individuals? How did their passions
come about, and what are the implications for
restoring the environment? Nature's Restoration: People and Places on the
Front Lines of Conservation is a lyrical look at these and other examples
of ordinary citizens aiming to return sizable tracts of the American
landscape to nature, and to health. They've found success in preserving
rare species, reversing negative ecological trends, and promoting
greater intimacy with nature.
Yet the work is far from simple. Restoration projects are often in the
news not only because of the promise they hold, but also because of
the controversy they provoke. Based on detailed reporting and numerous
interviews, Nature's Restoration puts us on the front lines of
restoration to learn how this burgeoning national movement shapes
both places and people.

A Rest Oration.......2006-06-25
Let's face it, picking up most environmental books, with their relentless message of doom and gloom, seems to require a talent for masochism or depression. And it's only gotten worse: in the 1970s environmentalists worried about polluted rivers or violated public lands, but now its planetary disasters like global warming, resource depletion, or mass extincitons; and the human race hasn't been showing much talent at facing these realities. How refreshing, then, to come upon a book that inspires environmental hope. The concept of environmental restoration, the idea that humans can nurse damaged landscapes back into health, has been quietly gathering momentum for years, and this book finally brings its thinking and its leaders and its dramas into full view. Peter Friederici is uniquely placed to write this story, since he has been involved in two of the leading restoration efforts in America, the efforts to restore prairies in Illinois and ponderosa pine forests in the Southwest. In addition to these places this book offers an even greater variety of landscapes, from an Hawaiian island long used for military target practice to a Bermuda invaded by luxury developments to ghost chestnut forests in Virginia to a flooded canyon in the Southwest. That such a variety of landscapes can be addressed by the same concept of restoration is a testimony to its value. Friederici also comes up with an amazing cast of characters who are involved in restoration efforts, people deeply in love with their land, dreamers enough to take on a major challenge yet practical enough to maneuver through complicated politicial realities. Restoration involves some philosophical challenges to our usual sense of nature, including challenges to environmentalists. Here in northern Arizona environmentalists will walk through a grotesquely unnatural forest, the product of a century of logging and fire suppression, a forest almost groomed to produce catastrophic fires, and yet they will feel a naive, book-induced sense of oneness with primordial nature and will oppose any interventions in the forest. Environmental restoration includes the paradox that the only way to return the land to pre-pioneer "naturalness" is through further human intervention. Thus restoration efforts have been opposed both by developers and by environmentalists. The political complexities faced by restoration efforts are also explored in this book. But amid all the complexities, Friederici maintains a poetic feel for the land and offers graceful philosophical musings on the place of humans in nature.
Book Description
Many years ago, Albert Einstein taught us that you can't solve a problem using the same kind of thinking that caused the problem in the first place. This book combines several approaches being used to describe today's global challenges into a broad but practical perspective on the future. It concludes that we must develop entirely new ways of thinking very soon if we want to pass on a high quality life to future generations.

Book Description
All over the world, sustainable river basin management is a leading principle of policy plans and legal instruments for water management (e.g. the European Water Framework Directive). The evidence, however, to underpin the full scope of sustainability is rather scanty. In this book an integrative perspective on trends and challenges in river science and management is demonstrated. The three pillars underneath sustainable water management, ecology, economy and sociology, are elaborated by experts in their fields. A number of papers integrate the current knowledge on the structure, functioning and management of ‘living rivers’. The book includes data and experiences concerning the rivers Allier, Meuse, Rhine, Sava and Tagliamento in Europe and the river Illinois in the USA. Sustainable river basin management asks for un-orthodox rehabilitation programmes and ecosystem based and transboundary management approaches.
Book Description
The problem of ecosystem damage is international; a recent estimate suggests that 43% of the earth’s terrestrial surface has a reduced capacity to supply benefits to humanity because of recent direct impacts of land use. The discipline of restoration ecology aims to provide a scientifically sound basis for the reconstruction of degraded or destroyed ecosystems and to produce self-supporting systems which are, to some degree, resilient to subsequent damage. This book looks at the main issues with a broad perspective, using case studies where appropriate and considering the economic and social context in which restoration is carried out. It is essential to reverse current trends by developing and using our knowledge of how to restore ecosystems. The book is therefore important for scientists, professionals in ecological restoration, landscape architects and environmental engineers, and more generally for those involved in sustainable development.

Description:
We review the effectiveness of habitat creation in an attempt to better understand the potential for delivery of compensatory habitat as part of sustainable development solutions, or for the establishment of habitat banking. Our review highlights considerable differences in the timescales needed to create conservation habitat of a comparable quality. Some wetlands may take just a few years, some grasslands of nature conservation value are known to be relatively young (
<80 years old), but woodlands may need to be hundreds of years old before they achieve a similar level of interest. Our knowledge of the abiotic requirements for some habitats, for example hydrological conditions for alkaline fens, is poor and suitable conditions are rare, making re-creation of such habitats highly problematic. Some faunas, such as some dragonfly and water beetle assemblages, may be readily catered for; others are dependant both on structural aspects of the habitat and on the mobility of individual species, and are far more difficult to accommodate, e.g., invertebrates associated with ancient trees. Historic examples of habitat regeneration are poor models of habitat regeneration on modern arable soils. Considerable changes in soil structure, pH and chemistry have resulted from the introduction of modern soil preparation techniques, fertilisers and pest control. Recent studies also suggest that mycorrhiza are fundamental to establishment of many habitats of conservation interest. Compensatory habitat creation can probably be used in some wetlands and inter-tidal environments, but the prospects for success in many terrestrial situations are far less certain. It therefore follows that compensatory habitat creation (also called ''offsets'') cannot be relied upon in all circumstances as means of offsetting loss of the highest quality habitat, and cannot be seen as a consistent and reliable delivery mechanism for sustainable development.

Book Description
Interactive Particle Systems is a branch of Probability Theory with close connections to Mathematical Physics and Mathematical Biology. In 1985, the author wrote a book (T. Liggett, Interacting Particle System, ISBN 3-540-96069) that treated the subject as it was at that time. The present book takes three of the most important models in the area, and traces advances in our understanding of them since 1985. In so doing, many of the most useful techniques in the field are explained and developed, so that they can be applied to other models and in other contexts. Extensive Notes and References sections discuss other work on these and related models. Readers are expected to be familiar with analysis and probability at the graduate level, but it is not assumed that they have mastered the material in the 1985 book. This book is intended for graduate students and researchers in Probability Theory, and in related areas of Mathematics, Biology and Physics.

"[...] However, it can be said that the author has succeeded in what even experts are seldom able to achieve: To write a clearcut and inspiring book on his favorite subject which meets most, if not all requirements which can be imposed on a comprehensive text on an important new field. The author can be congratulated on his excellent presentation of the theory of interacting particle systems. The book is highly recommended to everyone who works on or is interested in this subject: to probabilists, physicists and theoretical biologists. [...]"

Methods of Information in Medicine, 1986
Book Description
Entropy and entropy production have recently become mathematical tools for kinetic and hydrodynamic limits, when deriving the macroscopic behaviour of systems from the interaction dynamics of their many microscopic elementary constituents at the atomic or molecular level.
During a special semester on Hydrodynamic Limits at the Centre Émile Borel in Paris, 2001 two of the research courses were held by C. Villani and F. Rezakhanlou. Both illustrate the major role of entropy and entropy production in a mutual and complementary manner and have been written up and updated for joint publication. Villani describes the mathematical theory of convergence to equilibrium for the Boltzmann equation and its relation to various problems and fields, including information theory, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and fluid mechanics. Rezakhanlou discusses four conjectures for the kinetic behaviour of the hard sphere models and formulates four stochastic variations of this model, also reviewing known results for these.

Book Description
The Research Network on "Interacting stochastic systems of high complexity" set up by the German Research Foundation aimed at exploring and developing connections between research in infinite-dimensional stochastic analysis, statistical physics, spatial population models from mathematical biology, complex models of financial markets or of stochastic models interacting with other sciences. This book presents a structured collection of papers on the core topics, written at the close of the 6-year programme by the research groups who took part in it. The structure chosen highlights the interweaving of certain themes and certain interconnections discovered through the joint work. This yields a reference work on results and methods that will be useful to all who work between applied probability and the physical, economic, and life sciences.

Book Description
The papers in this collection explore the connections between the rapidly developing fields of measure-valued processes, stochastic partial differential equations, and interacting particle systems, each of which has undergone profound development in recent years. Bringing together ideas and tools arising from these different sources, the papers include contributions to major directions of research in these fields, explore the interface between them, and describe newly developing research problems and methodologies. Several papers are devoted to different aspects of measure-valued branching processes (also called superprocesses). Some new classes of these processes are described, including branching in catalytic media, branching with change of mass, and multilevel branching. Sample path and spatial clumping properties of superprocesses are also studied. The papers on Fleming-Viot processes arising in population genetics include discussions of the role of genealogical structures and the application of the Dirichlet form methodology. Several papers are devoted to particle systems studied in statistical physics and to stochastic partial differential equations which arise as hydrodynamic limits of such systems. With overview articles on some of the important new developments in these areas, this book would be an ideal source for an advanced graduate course on superprocesses.

Book Description
Stochastic numerical methods play an important role in large scale computations in the applied sciences. The first goal of this book is to give a mathematical description of classical direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) procedures for rarefied gases, using the theory of Markov processes as a unifying framework. The second goal is a systematic treatment of an extension of DSMC, called stochastic weighted particle method. This method includes several new features, which are introduced for the purpose of variance reduction (rare event simulation). Rigorous convergence results as well as detailed numerical studies are presented.

Book Description
Simone Weil, a brilliant young teacher, philosopher, and social activist, wrote the essay, The Iliad or the Poem of Force at France at the beginning of World War II. Her profound meditation on the nature of violence provides a remarkably vivid and accessible testament of the Greek epic's continuing relevance to our lives. This celebrated work appears here for the first time in a bilingual version, based on the text of the authoritative edition of the author's complete writings. An introduction discusses the significance of the essay both in the evolution of Weil's thought and as a distinctively iconoclastic contribution to Homeric studies. The commentary draws on recent interpretations of the Iliad and examines the parallels between Weil's vision of Homer's warriors and the experiences of modern soldiers.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant analysis of the Iliad.......2004-06-16
There's been a lot of renewed interest in The Iliad lately- some of it stems from "Troy", the Brad Pitt vehicle, but much of it comes from the inevitable drawing of parallels between yesterday and today. With more and more talk of America as "empire", reflections on empires and wars fought in years past has been a hot topic of discussion. Lewis Lapham, in his excellent collection of essays "Theater of War", has one particularly astute essay drawing a parallel between the Peloponnysian war and the current wars being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Other works, particularly recent books by Chris Hedges, have attempted to delve into the psychology, the reason, of war, rather than just the methods used to wage it. Simone Weil writes in a similar vein, albeit over 50 years ahead of her time. The book itself is an extended essay- in French and English. She picks through the Iliad, drawing out a verse and following it with analyses, successfully laying out her thesis- that the main character of the Iliad is, in fact, "force". Not Achilles, not Hector, but force itself. The use of it, the misuse of it, and the fates of those who rely on it. Citing some of the most insightful passages in the Iliad, and sometimes just a single line ("Ares is just, and kills those who kill"), Weil uses the Iliad as a launching pad into the psychology of war and violence. Having lived through WWII, one can imagine Weil didn't look far for contempory situations to draw parallels to. Overall, this is an excellent work- any fan of the Iliad, or any student of war, would do well to pick it up.
