Customer Reviews:
Challenges of living on land.......2000-11-27
This book shows how complex lifeforms came onto the land from the sea. Hypersea does not include bacteria already living on the land, but is defined by the authors as the sum total of plant, animal, protoctistan and fungal terrestrial-based life. The challenges of living on land are discussed in detail - the need to retain water within, the difficulty extracting crucial nutrients, locomotion out of the water, etc. The importance of the fungi in extracting and delivering nutrients to plants, in return for carbohydrates produced by the plants, is considered, and a picture of the interconnectedness of terrestrial lifeforms emerges.
A must for understanding how the world works.......2000-10-11
Ok, for those not up on their biology or the Gaia hypothesis, it might be difficult to get through, but Hypersea is well written and fascinating for those interested in knowing how life has and will continue to evolve in more complex ways. An extremely important addition to the Gaia hypothesis. You will never see the world in the same way again.
The Hypersea and Gaia hypotheses are the only two clearly defined scientific theories that have been put forth to give us some answers to questions not asked by most of biology.

Book Description
Glycostructures play a highly diverse and crucial role in a myriad of organisms and important systems in biology, physiology, medicine, bioengineering and technology. Only in recent years have the tools been developed to partly understand the highly complex functions and the chemistry behind them, but many facts still remain undiscovered. "All roads lead to carbohydrates ... we cannot do without them." (K.C. Nicolaou). Presently the field is experiencing a "quantum jump". Therefore the editors have drawn together in this three volume set plus an accompanying CD-ROM, the complete and up-to-date information on glycostructures, their chemistry and chemical biology, and present them in the form of a comprehensive and strictly systematic survey. The texts are furnished by 2.670 figures, chemical structures and reaction schemes (including more than 12.000 individual chemical reactions), and more than 9.000 references.

Book Description
This book developed from a series of conferences to facilitate the application of mathematical modeling to experimental nutrition. As nutrition science moves from prevention of gross deficiencies to identifying requirements for optimum long term health, more sophisticated methods of nutritional assessment will be needed. Collection and evaluation of kinetic data may be one such method.
This books opens with chapters giving specific examples of the application of modeling techniques to vitamin A, carotenoids, folate, vitamin b-6, glycogen phosphorylase, transthyretin, amino acids, and energy metabolism. Obtaining kinetic data on internal processes is a major challenge; therefore, the text includes chapters on the use of microdialysis and ultrafiltration, use of membrane vesicles, and culture of mammary tissue.
Many of the authors use the Simulation, Analysis and Modeling program which allows compartmental models to be described without specifying the required differential equations. The final sections of the book, however, present some more mathematical descriptions of physiological processes, including bioperiodicity, metabolic control, and membrane transport; discussions of some computational aspects of modeling such as parameter distributions, linear integrators and identifiability; and alternative mathematical approaches such as neural networks and graph theory.
Key Features
* Specific, detailed examples of applications of modeling to vitamins, proteins, amino acids, and energy metabolism
* Novel methods for collecting kinetic data--microdialysis, ultrafiltration, membrane vesicles, and the culture of mammary tissue
* Mathematical treatment of complex metabolic processes including bioperiodicity, metabolic control, and membrane transport
* Computational approaches to distribution of kinetic parameters, evaluation of linear integrators, and identifiability
* Alternative mathematical approaches--neural networks and graph theory
Detailed descriptions of the application of modeling to a variety of nutrients

Book Description
How odd, Anne Beddingfeld thought, that the stranger caught her eye, recoiled in horror, and fell to his death on the rails of Hyde Park Underground Station. Odder still was a doctor in a brown suit who pronounced him dead and vanished into the crowd. But what really aroused Anne's suspicion was when she learned of the doctor's link to the murder of a famous ballerina, a fortune in hidden diamonds, and a crime-lord embroiled in blackmail. And most frightening of all was the attempt made on Anne's own life. But she is unable to resist the lure of an isolated mansion that could hold the solution to the bizarre mystery--even if she becomes the next victim...
Customer Reviews:
An ideal read for a warm bath after a stressful day. .......2007-09-22
The Man in the Brown Suit is one of my favorite Christie novels that does not fit into one of her regular character series. Much more of an unashamed romance than her other novels, it is an ideal read for a warm bath after a stressful day. Anne makes a delightful detective and intrepid reporter. Identities are switched. Villains are not quite what they seem. The world is traveled. A good time is generally had by all.
The Man in the Brown Suit is Christie's fourth novel, and was published in 1927. Recommended.
Another great Christie novel!.......2007-06-27
This is a novel with all new characters. You don't have to deal with endless Poirot egotism or Marple simplicity. It has a wonderfully twisted ending that I never would have guessed. I listened to the CD version and the reading was done well.
Intrigue and suspense.......2006-07-19
I liked this book very much. It's intriguing and full of suspense from cover to cover. I'm a Christie's fan and this is better that most.
Christie's Best Non-Series Mysteries.......2005-03-31
The Man in the Brown Suit is the best of Agatha Christie's non-series mysteries (Poitot, Marple, Tommy and Tuppence) and one of the first books to showcase her charms as an author. She filled the mystery with many interesting characters and gave the reader two narrators who both are surprisingly interesting and funny in their own unique ways. It is nice to go back to this early mystery and find a successful author discovering her voice. Christie stills insists on filling the story with improbable romance (and, quite frankly, she always did) but, that aside, this is an exciting little tale that travels from England to South Africa with a wonderfully thrilling interlude about a ship. A must for Christie fans.
Mystery or Romance?.......2005-01-16
Agatha Christie was a very prolific writer and, at her best, I've always regarded her as second only to Conan Doyle as a mystery writer. In addition, as noted in the editorial section above, she wrote romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. After reading THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT, I'm inclined to the opinion that she also wrote romances under her own name.
The back cover of this book notes that the name Agatha Christie "is synonymous with brilliant deception, ingenious puzzles, and the surprise denoument". Well, to be fair, there is a mystery here and, if it was tightened up some, it wouldn't be a bad one. As it is, though, it meanders, it isn't all that deceptive, and it just isn't very compelling (especially in the later part of the story). What you get instead is a "coming of age" story about a naive and foolish young woman who blows her last penny on a one-way ticket to South Africa in pursuit of a seemingly dangerous killer, a "bad guy" who is both fairly obvious and, in the end, much too likeable, and an ending that is too pat and too easy.
THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT isn't a really bad story. The characters are amusing and things move along briskly. It's worth remembering that it was written in the 1920's and the world was a much different place in those days. I found it disappointing as a whodunit, though, and a good whodunit is what I was looking for. As the book proceeds, it becomes less about the mystery and more about the improbable romantic adventures of the heroine. Romance fans may like it, but if you're looking for an engaging mystery, I suggest you look elsewhere.

This is a well-written biography about one of the leading industrial designers of the 20th century. Anyone who has ever marvelled at the simple elegance of the 'round' thermostat has Henry Dreyfuss to thank, and this book tells much of his story.
