Book Description

This book serves as a guidebook for believers, to awaken their interest, offer practical help, enable them to think through big questions in light of Scripture, and prepare them for the greatest issue of the 21st century: our new power to redesign human nature and determine the boundaries of human life through abortion, cloning, euthanasia, eugenics, and robotics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to an under-discussed topic!.......2007-01-06

This book made me think about ethical choices and the consequences of what are becoming routine procedures. I appreciate the authors deep respect for life, willingness to acknowledge common interests with those who share a different worldview, and their willingness to challenge us by clearly stating what they think is right. It is hard to be neutral after hearing their story.

5 out of 5 stars How do we proceed in the brave new world?.......2006-08-09

The brave new world the authors refer to is the scary new world of biomedical technologies and breakthroughs. While the new biotech offers much promise, it also raises many ethical and social concerns. In this volume two Christian authors advise readers on how to think biblically and morally about the new technologies.

Thus issues such as human cloning, stem cell research, genetic engineering, eugenics, designer babies, and cybernetics are closely examined.

The pair are well placed to discuss these topics. Joni is well known as a speaker and writer who has learned to cope with her quadriplegia. Nearly 40 years ago she was confined to a wheel chair after a diving accident. She could easily be tempted to grasp at the hype and hoopla promised by such things as embryonic stem cell research, but is aware that any potential cures must be ethically achieved.

And Nigel Cameron is a long standing expert on bioethics issues, and author of the important 1991 book, The New Medicine. Together they help us think ethically about where the new biomedicine and technologies are taking us.

As mentioned, there are a lot of promises being made about how cures derived from embryonic stem cells (ESCs) may soon help people like Joni walk again, and help many other people with various diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. While Joni would of course love to be able to walk again, she realizes that ESCs are not the way to go. This is because ethical medicine must take priority in such cases. Killing a embryo to obtain its stem cells is not how we show respect and dignity to members of the human race.

Killing some to possibly save others is not good medicine, and it is not morally acceptable. Plus, as the authors show, adult stem cell research is already resulting in numerous human cures, while ESCs have not yet led to even one.

This book does not simply give an academic case against some of the destructive new technologies, but features case studies and personal stories of many people suffering various infirmities and diseases. Joni herself of course provides a human face as to how ethical medicine can be pursued.

While the media is wont to focus on emotive stories of people suffering, such as the late Christopher Reeve, and call for such ethically dubious science as ESC research, they seldom feature others who equally are suffering, but refuse to go down the path of technologies that do not respect human dignity and personhood.

Thus this book shows how we can not only think rightly about the new biotech world, but how we can act rightly as well. A very helpful resource for those wanting an introduction to this brave new world.

Book Description

Clones, genetically modified foods, frozen embryos, stem cells, gene therapy: these are some of the new discoveries and scientific developments that are guaranteed to change our lives and our society forever. How does Judaism, an ancient religion, come to terms with such dramatic changes? This insightful book explores Jewish reactions to cutting-edge biological issues that continue to dominate the headlines.

Does Jewish law permit production and use of stem cells, gene therapy, and human cloning? Is it permissib le to produce and eat bioengineered foods? How do assisted reproductive technologies affect the definition of parenthood and who is a Jew? Are there "Jewish genes" that define Jews as a unique group? Do Jewish disease genes stigmatize the Jewish people?

Miryam Z. Wahrman addresses these and other questions by examining how Judaism interprets and responds to recent advances in biomedical science. Presenting bioethical principles derived from traditional Judaic sources, she shows how contemporary rabbis and Judaica scholars have interpreted these texts in light of radical new biotechnologies such as infertility treatments, genetic testing, sex selection, and bioengineered food. Taking into account Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform perspectives, she shows that different denominations can react to novel technologies in unpredictable ways. For example, there are numerous instances where Orthodox sources are more accepting of technology than the other branches of Judaism.

Brave New Judaism offers a broad Jewish perspective on compelling issues, showing how Judaism has coped with current scientific inventions and technologies, and how Jewish law has creatively kept pace with the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars Brave New Outlook on Science and Judaism.......2002-10-28

I don't think I've ever read a book quite as breathtakingly interesting and pertanent regarding Judaism. Brave New Judaism has changed the way I look at my religion and has allowed me to see the new advances of science in a new light as well. In addition, although it covers topics such as science and religion, which often are covered very innanely, Dr. Wahrman has managed to turn these topics into a page-turner through her personal anecdotes and fascinating tidbits on every topic.
I recommend this book to any scientists or religious experts out there...or to anyone who has spent an afternoon pondering either of these topics under a tree in the backyard.

3 out of 5 stars Watch out for the personal biases!.......2003-02-02

I got this book because I've applied to medical school and wanted to be abreast of the current thinking about a wide range of topics wihch impact the health/medical system. Pence does accomplish this in his 34 chapters which cover mostly unique topics. Of course, this strength is also a problem when one desires more detailed or a better balanced representation of an issue. Beyond this, I have several objections to Pence's book. First, as this is a collection of previously published articles some are not up-to-date; for example, the articles about AIDS were written in 1988 and 1992. I'm wondering where things are now. Second, even though Pence is is a philosopher/bioethicist, he is not immune from having his own unique life experience/culture affecting his ability to be completely unbiased. In fact, none of us can. But then, let's not any of us act as if our point of view is the one and only truth. In my opinion, Pence is definitely fully invested in the dominant medical and Judeo Christian models. The book is replete with good/bads and right/wrongs. I personally found his last chapter on Hating Biotechnology highly prejudiced toward a particular viewpoint. A quote from this chapter, "Even if sowing Bt corn destroyed the environment of Ethiopia, if the resulting crop prevented the death of millions from starvation, it would be justified." illustrates a distorted reality. Further, in that chapter Pence likens those who espouse the theories of deep ecology to the Nazis, in some sort of scare tactic. Pence encourages us to push the edge of technology and has confidence in our ablities to do what's "right". I, myself, have grave concerns about the ways in which our political/corporate systems make decisions which affect the entire world -- often in a highly short-sighted and greedy fashion.

1 out of 5 stars simplistic indictment that ignores anything positive .......2004-10-07

If you want a book that argues consistently and totally against biotechnology, then this is your book. Fox is what I call a biozealot, that is, a radical activist that opposes the development of biotechnology, any industrialization, and even bio-medical research that uses animals. Rather than seek common ground or take a measured evaluation of what pharmaceutical companies and the governments are attempting to do - and what their concerns are - they prefer blanket, moralistic, and utterly unnuanced condemnations.

This book is a sloppily researched and less well written version of what Jeremy Rifkin does better. Yet both men are intolerant, misleading, and I suspect, ignorent of what positive things are being done. Instead, they lump everyone together into a cabal run by the "petrochemical-pharmaceutical industrial complex," which they charge wnats to dominate the world's genetic resources, etc.

I would say that these are worthy concerns, but not in the hands of these men. Fox and Rifkin refuse to make common cause with those within government and industry who are concnerned about the same issues and who are attempting to do the right thing. Thus, if you want more even-handed treatment, you must go to other authors, such as Walter Anderson and Jack Doyle.

I learned nothing from this book. It is repetitive - often lifting whole paragraphs verbatim in subsequent chapters! - and ultimately dishonest.

        Book Description

In this book, Schaller provides a thorough examination of the impact of biotechnology and biomedical advances on the everyday lives of people in modern society. Individuals and institutions are increasingly faced with a growing number of critical personal and ethical decisions that present themselves at all stages of life, from birth to death. These issues include the physician-patient relationship, informed consent, confidentiality and privacy, reproductive choices, end-of-life choices, health care, drug choices, and the allocation of scarce resources such as human organs, sperm, and eggs. Although bioethics as an independent discipline is barely thirty years old, bioethics issues already pervade everyday life and regularly capture the attention of the media. The field is constantly changing because of new developments in technology and medicine. Many significant controversies in bioethics are developing without a great deal of policy regulation. In the absence of policy, individuals and institutions are increasingly turning to courts for decisions on crucial controversies. When court cases are brought, judge-made law has great impact, not only in terms of resolving particular controversies, but also in transforming bioethical issues in ways that cannot be anticipated. Advances and discoveries in medicine and the life sciences will continue to have important and yet unpredictable impacts, not only on the lives of individuals, but on society as a whole. The great promise of new developments is offset by numerous perils. Individual and public policy choices must take into account the full range of possibilities, and Schaller has provided an invaluable guide to this ethical minefield.

                  Book Description

A radical thinker, one of the rare modern heretics, said Mary McCarthy of Ivy Compton-Burnett, in whose austere, savage, and bitingly funny novels anything can happen and no one will ever escape. The long, endlessly surprising conversational duels at the center of Compton-Burnett's works are confrontations between the unspoken and the unspeakable, and in them the dynamics of power and desire are dramatized as nowhere else. New York Review Books is reissuing two of the finest novels of this singular modern genius—works that look forward to the blacky comic inventions of Muriel Spark as much as they do back to the drawing rooms of Jane Austen.

A House and Its Head is Ivy Compton-Burnett's subversive look at the politics of family life, and perhaps the most unsparing of her novels. No sooner has Duncan Edgeworth's wife died than he takes a new, much younger bride whose willful ways provoke a series of transgressions that begins with adultery and ends, much to everyone's relief, in murder.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from the NYRB Press.......2001-02-21

I'm beginning to become addicted to these little neglected treasures that the NYRB Press is reissuing. Not only are the editions themselves little marvels (with beautiful and well-chosen color covers and gorgeous paper stock), but whoever is making the choices for which books are reissued has near-infallible taste.

A HOUSE AND ITS HEAD, like so many of Ivy Compton-Burnett's novels, reads something like a modern updating of a Greek tragedy: most of the novel is told through dialogue, there is a kind of chorus that comments on the action of the principal characters, and the plot involves murder, incest, and familial cruelty. Yet for all these borrowings Compton-Burnett paradoxically remains wonderfully sui generis: no one else has ever mastered her capability for evoking such extreme subtlety in manners that the merest cruel nuances can become evoked (if one reads carefully enough). She is also a master plotter: just when you think you've caught up with the characters' schemes, she allows the other characters in the novel to make similar realizations, and then jumps even further ahead. This is a real page-turner as well as a subtle commentary on Edwardian manners and moral monstrousness.
