Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Definitive book on architectural planning.......2007-06-20

This is the state of the art in planning information. Editorially, this is the finest work being done in the world, with all issues of book production
(graphic presentation, architectonic and conceptual analysis, format, etc.) of the highest quality. Nothing currently available compares. Essential reference for students and architects.

4 out of 5 stars A ridiculously handy reference........2006-03-10

I've desired this since I had access to it in an office at which I once worked. Now it's in paperback, revised, and cheap. The editors have a great sense of which projects merit inclusion, offering some basic works and some slightly more radical projects. The brilliant system of scaling everything to the same ratio (and the clever, included transparent scale ruler) makes this truly an efficient reference manual and not just some more architectural pornography.

I find I use this both in work (and for casual browsing) far more often than I really use the sexy full color architecture books of the moment that seem to flood the landscape.

I only have one or two complaints: I'd love to see some of the plans, whose reproduction leaves a lot to be desired, redrawn. Also, I'd love to see some scaled sections for the included projects, since many or the included works transcend full discussion in plan. I guess that would be antithetical given the book title, however.

All said, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical and helpful.......2004-09-17

This book, while concentrating on landscape photography, can be used as an intro guide for all kinds of digital work. Easy to use format allows you to work through a project while introducing you to techniques you can then explore further on your own. I've recommended it to several people, including a couple of very experienced film photographers, and everyone has found it to be a good resource.

Note that this book doesn't explain PhotoShop or other photo editing programs, though it incorporates them, but is organized by project or function that the photographer wants to accomplish. If you want a tutorial on photo-editing programs, this book will not meet this purpose. I do think the book is very accessible to beginners, and that it has something to offer to all digital photographers. I believe the clarity of the writing and the step by step format of the book make this possible.

4 out of 5 stars Good examples and inspiration.......2003-08-20

I am an amateur with experience in film and digital. I got interested in digital because powerful tools are more affordable than their film counterparts. For example, I don't need tons of filters, hugely expensive light kits or my own colour lab; a good camera, a simple lighting kit, Photoshop and a good photo printer go a long way for a fraction of the price. If you're that kind of person, you'll love this book.

I recommend this book because (1) it's different from most "digital photography" book and (2) it follows a very practical format.

The digital photographer's handbook to landscapes and cityscapes covers material that you will find in other Photoshop 101 books: adjustment layers, stamp/corrector, color correction, etc. but it has a unique twist: it works through projects that are clearly aimed at the amateur photographer. Specifically the author does not assume you very expensive, professional gear but rather that you use a digicam and a tripod. The book shows how to make the best out of what you own in the digital darkroom.

Still, I liked the other titles in the series (Portraits and Travel) better. Maybe because I have more experience with landscape than with portraiture.

A word of warning though: it does not replace a good introduction to your image editing package of choice. In fact the book is very light on application specific information. Whether you own Photoshop Elements, PaintShopPro or PhotoImpact, you will want to get a tutorial first and use this book as inspiration afterwards.

          Book Description

Robert Campbell's eloquent and witty text sculpts an image of how Boston has changed with time. Each pair of pictures compares a site in Boston in the past and in the present. This book also explores the evolution of cities in general--how they develop and decay, build up and spread out, and revive and change. Beautiful black-and-white photography gives an insightful portrait of Boston, past and present.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to a pretty cool book... when's volume 3?.......2003-05-01

The authors' second collaboration of historical photos of Boston (the first was Boston Then and Now from 1982) came out ten years after the original, and shows a Boston I'm more familiar with. Much of the blight that Boston seemed to have been drowning in as late as the late 80s is gone in the new pictures in this book, and more of it is shown. The architectural finesses -- buildings with added floors, the defacement of buildings such as the former Fiske building on State St, before-and-afters of Quincy Market -- are given great attention in this book, and Campbell, the author of the text, is not happy with much of it. Especially poignant, towards the end, is a huge bit of graffiti along Columbus Ave from the 60s protesting the impending construction of I-95 through Boston; in 1992, however, the highway never having been built, it is now a park serving people from the South End all the way down to Jamaica Plain.

This book is actually a readable book, more so than the first which was all about the pictures, and much of Campbell's ideas on urban planning are on display here. Campbell, one gathers, would not be happy with the current plans to build open space over the Big Dig, yet he applauds the demolition of an old parking garage that converted Post Office Square from a desolate, confusing high-rise commercial ghetto into at least a more presentable area where the architecture of the surrounding buildings can be enjoyed from street level. Campbell's obsession with urban density comes off as being a bit agoraphobic, but it's easy to see what he means when he describes useless open space as being as much a blight as overhead highways or slums.

To those of you who might live in or regularly visit Boston, but have never seen, can't remember, or simply can't imagine downtown without the dust and construction that the Big Dig and its related projects have brought on, this book is a record of Boston just before they started tearing everything apart. It's also a valuable historical record of the evolution of a city.

5 out of 5 stars awesome historical record -- and entertaining too!!.......2002-04-10

With text by Robert Campbell and photographs (primarily) by Peter Vanderwarker, this book is not only a wonderful volume documenting the history of Boston, but a general and gentle instruction in the rise and fall and rise and fall cycles of many cities, focusing in particular on the "built environment". All photographs are in black-and-white, but this makes the comparison between old and new cityscapes easier. Within each of seven chapters there are a series of two-page pieces featuring photographs and an essay on such topics as: Murdering Another Street, A Waterfront Workplace Becomes a Playpen, A Landmark on Top of a Landmark, A Building That Floats, etc. The text is informative and interesting. Maps are used to supplement the material, and a good index follows. If only all history and architecture books could be this well done!

          Exceptional work, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars New insight into Boston.......2000-12-14

My sister in law gave us this book a couple years ago when we moved to Boston. I grew up in the burbs and my wife in the Midwest so we had plenty to explore. The book sat idle for over a year, but when I pulled it down, I was amazed that I hadn't opened it sooner. This book is wonderful.

This is a city that revels in its history, and, to an outsider, Boston sometimes seems a bit mired in its parochial and seemingly unchanging ways. You can end up assuming, "Gosh, it must always have been this way with it's cobblestones and colonial landmarks." This book shattered my assumptions about the static nature of this city.

The authors peel off layer after layer from the city and as the landmarks come and go the authors reflect, educate and entertain as to how these physical changes are linked to history of the city. Some changes are success stories of planning, others fortunate twists of fate, and yet others, unmitigated urban planning disasters. All fascinating illustrations that help the reader understand the city on a more meaningful level.

I must admit that I love cities and am enthralled by the idea of so many people sharing a limited space comfortably and enjoyably. Cities, to me, have an energy that speaks to the miracle of civilization where people can grow personally by sharing in the diversity of those around them. It nevers goes perfectly, because after all we are human, but it is nonetheless comforting to frame your current surroundings in the context of those who have come before you.

                          Book Description

In a non-market-clearing approach to business cycle theory, this book builds an advanced model of economic activity, inflation and income distribution in a Keynesian spirit. After a qualitative analysis of the basic feedback mechanisms, the authors calibrate the model to the stylized facts of the business cycle in the U.S. economy. This calibrated model is used to carry out various macroeconomic simulation studies as well as a detailed study of the macroeconomic impact of various monetary policy rules. It will appeal both to theorists and to applied and policy economists.

                            Book Description

John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek had serious differences of opinion when it came to assessing the fractured inter-war world. G.S. Steele picks apart this debate and argues persuasively that Hayek's outlook will prove to be the more enduring.

1 out of 5 stars How not to write a book on Keynes.......2004-09-05

There are just too many errors of commission and omission made in this book to justify purchasing it ,given its excessive price.First, contrary to Steele(S),the A Treatise on Probability(TP)was published in 1921,not 1920.(Steele,p.2). Second, the claim that Keynes "... studied economics only briefly..."(Steele,p.2) before 1906 is not supported by any evidence.Keynes completely mastered Marshall's Principles textbook ,as well as the 20 plus pages of single spaced mathematical footnotes contained in an appendix at the end of that textbook.Third, S's claim that theTP is"...an attempt to outline a theory of probability that might be applied to unique events in a social context...",(Steele,p.2)is false.Keynes's TP applies to all propositions about any and all events in all contexts because it is a general theory ,not only of probability, but also of decision making.Third,S's claim that Keynes reached the conclusion that"...time is more usefully employed in persuasion that(sic)in research based upon sound analysis"(Steele,p.3)is directly contrary to Keynes's argument that persuasion is needed to convince ordinary citizens and government officials to accept the sound analysis.Fourth, there is no support for Steele's claim that Keynes attempted"... to formalise a new non-deterministic method of economics(Fitzgibbons,1988:129)"(Steele,p.21).Finally, the claim that Keynes believed that "...short cuts across technical details do not matter"(Steele,p.22)for a theoretical analysis doesn't make any sense because chapters 20 and 21 of the General Theory contain all the details needed for a mathematically literate reader to follow Keynes's analysis. There are literally dozens of other errors scattered through out the book, such as the false claim that Keynes never defined "uncertainty"(lack of weight of evidence) in the TP(Steele,p.49).The potential book buyer can find Keynes's definition on page 315 of the TP in the last paragraph, where w is defined as being measured on the unit interval between 0 and 1,i.e.,0= Landmark Papers in Economic Fluctuations, Economic Policy and Related Subjects (The Foundations of 20th Century Economics)

                            Book Description

The computer revolution of the 1960s ushered in a golden period of econometric model building. Lawrence Klein was constantly in the forefront of this development. He was awarded the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for this and other contributions to applied econometrics.

The 20th century witnessed a great expansion of economics as a scholarly discipline. The editor has chosen a selection of papers which sparked his interest as a student, a teacher and a researcher. This key volume includes both classic articles as well as lesser known papers which Professor Klein judges will stand the test of time.

                              Book Description

i Risk and Business Cycles /i examines the causes of business cycles, a perennial topic of interest within economics. The author argues the case for the revival of an important role for monetary causes in business cycle theory, which challenges the current trend towards favouring purely real theories. The work also presents a critique of the traditional Austrian theory of the trade cycle. This controversial approach will ensure that the book is of interest to all those involved with business cycles, as well as Austrian economics.
