Book Description
This third volume in the series,
Advances in Space Biology and Medicine, is a special volume dedicated entirely to the results of the first European study of the effects of long-term confinement and isolation. The project was sponsored by the European Space Agency's Long-Term Program Office, Directorate of Space Station and microgravity, in preparation for its long-term manned space missions, the first of which will be its participation in
Space Station Freedom through the
Columbus program.
The project was called the Isolation Study for European Manned Space Infrastructures, abbreviated ISEMSI. It was executed in the hyperbaric chamber facility of the Norwegian Underwater Technology Center (NUTEC), Bergen, Norway in September/October 1990. Six carefully selected men, called the EMSInauts, were confined in the chamber for a period of 28 days. The isolation period was preceded by a training period of two weeks, the pre-isolation period, during which baseline data on the subjects were obtained. It was followed by a recovery period, the post-isolation period, during which further tests were performed outside the chamber.
The primary aim of ISEMSI was to obtain information on the psychological and physiological effects of long-term isolation and confinement of a small crew group under conditions similar to those that may be expected to exist for a space station crew. The simulation was designed to be as realistic as possible, except for the absence of weightlessness. This implied that the EMSInauts were given a considerable workload of tasks to be performed each day of the experimental period. The workload consisted of questionnaires and tests of a psychological and physiological nature, of housekeeping duties, and of additional space-related experiments. The nature and the results of their activities are described in thirteen chapters of this volume. In addition there is an introductory chapter by the head of the Long-Term Program Office, ESA, and chapters about Russian and American isolation studies of a similar nature.
Together this material should offer the reader a rather comprehensive view of the psychophysiological aspects of the confinement and isolation inherent in long-term space missions; missions which may be expected to become common-place in decades ahead. The list of contents indicates the wide range of topics studied: group functioning and communication; spatial behavior; workload and stress; mental performance; cognitive fatigue; attention; sleep quality; and physiological aspects, such as water and salt turnover, cardiac function, hormones and electrolytes, orthostatic function, and immune function. The additional experiments cover important topics such as telemedical treatment, telescience, and microbial and chemical contamination monitoring.
The results of this study and further studies of this nature should not only benefit future astronauts and help those who are organizing long-term manned space missions, but should also be useful to investigators who are planning crew-operated experiments to be carried out during such missions.

This book contains the essentials of abstract (or modern) algebra together with a wide variety of applications.
Customer Reviews:
The best modern algebra text I have seen.......2006-07-22
It has been some time since I taught a course in modern algebra, but if I were to teach it again, I would use this book. The first chapter covers the basics of binary operations and algebraic structures. Seven pages in length, it is a basic overview of what the students should already know. Chapter two covers what is arguably the simplest abstract algebra, Boolean algebra. Propositional logic, switching circuits, posets and lattices are the examples used. I am in strong agreement with the introduction of switching circuits this early in a course. It is an application of abstract algebra that students can easily understand and relate to. Switching circuits also immediately demonstrates that the inclusion of "with applications" in the title is not a misnomer.
Basic group theory is the topic of chapter three, quotient and symmetry groups are covered in chapters four and five. The Polya-Burnside method of enumeration is the topic of chapter five, monoids and machines the focus of chapter seven, rings, fields, polynomial, Euclidean and quotient rings are examined in chapters eight, nine and ten. Field extensions are covered in chapter eleven, Latin squares in chapter twelve, geometrical constructions in chapter thirteen and error-correcting codes in chapter fourteen.
The exposition is excellent, it is one of the more readable texts in advanced mathematics that you will find. There are many examples of the applications of modern algebra to the real world and a large number of exercises are included at the end of the chapters. Solutions to the odd numbered exercises are found in an appendix.
Modern algebra is a difficult topic due to the abstract nature of the material. It is easy for students to get confused and lost when they are studying the book on their own. The risk of that is minimized if they are reading this book.
important computer applications.......2005-01-01
This book is pitched at the level of a third or fourth undergraduate year in maths, or at a graduate level course. Gilbert assumes a solid background in maths, especially linear algebra. He expounds on groups and rings.
You can certainly treat this book as a pure maths text on algebra. But there is a twist to it, for some of you. He discusses applications in engineering. Notably Boolean algebra. Boolean logic forms the conceptual and practical basis of computer hardware and software. Gilbert shows how to represent a Boolean expression in a normal form and how to simplify it. Very practical and vital to circuit design.
Later on in the book, he gives a good but all too brief discussion of finite state machines. These can be used in control systems and even in the construction of computer languages like Java. Where the Java bytecode can be validated precisely because Java is a finite state machine.
Finally, error correcting codes take up an entire chapter. Important in communications theory, and even in such common items as storing information on computer media like DVDs.

Abstract Algebra vol 2 by Spindler.......2000-08-03
Page 174 volume 2 the author did not follow completely the proof of Nagell theroem as in Algebraic Number Theory by Stewart & Tall Instead He introduced the matrix [1 1, -2 0], We may name it here for short S, The author claims that S**42k = [-1 -1, -1 -1] mod 3 which is wrong S**42k = +-[1 0, 1 0] 4|k or 2|k respectively and = +-S 4|k-1 or 2|k-1 respectively in both cases the first entery in the total matrix as S**(42k +13) * [0 1] would be -1 and destroy the logic of the author in his argument However it deos not violate the theory for -1 in a field of chratersistic 3 need not be -1 in the integral domain Z[sqrt(-7)] I do here thank Amazon.com for the chance to report that for neithe the author nor the editorial at the publisher has an address to communicate with. A thorough, accessible and indispensable resource on algebra.......1999-03-11
This two volume set is by far the most complete text on abstract algebra available. Rich in detail, a wealth of examples and clear yet concise explanations provide the reader an accesible source to deepen his understanding of abstract algebra. Spindler conveys his love of algebra and a desire to reveal its riches to the average student. If you've relied on Hungerford's / Lang's Algebra or Warner's Modern Algebra, this text is the last text you will need.

Book Description
The mathematical concepts of abstract algebra may indeed be considered abstract, but its utility is quite concrete and continues to grow in importance. Unfortunately, the practical application of abstract algebra typically involves extensive and cumbersome calculations-often frustrating even the most dedicated attempts to appreciate and employ its intricacies. Now, however, sophisticated mathematical software packages help obviate the need for heavy number-crunching and make fields dependent on the algebra more interesting-and more accessible.Applications of Abstract Algebra with Maple opens the door to cryptography, coding, Polya counting theory, and the many other areas dependent on abstract algebra. The authors have carefully integrated Maple V throughout the text, enabling readers to see realistic examples of the topics discussed without struggling with the computations. But the book stands well on its own if the reader does not have access to the software. The text includes a first-chapter review of the mathematics required-groups, rings, and finite fields-and a Maple tutorial in the appendix along with detailed treatments of coding, cryptography, and Polya theory applications.Applications of Abstract Algebra with Maple packs a double punch for those interested in beginning-or advancing-careers related to the applications of abstract algebra. It not only provides an in-depth introduction to the fascinating, real-world problems to which the algebra applies, it offers readers the opportunity to gain experience in using one of the leading and most respected mathematical software packages available.
Customer Reviews:
A fierce feminist and a mortal passion.......2005-11-04
The two stories of Mary Wollstonecraft 'Mary' and 'Maria' (the latter unfortunately unfinished) tackle the same problem: the position of women in society. 'But a wife being as much a man's property as his horse, or his ass, she has nothing she can call her own.'
The reactions of their protagonists are diametrically opposed.
Mary's attitude to life is resignation: 'I cannot argue against instincts.' She longs for death, to enter a 'world where there is no giving in marriage.'
Maria, on the contrary, tries to take her destiny in her own hands and hits back: 'I feel that the evils women are subject to endure, degrade them so far below their oppressors as almost to justify their tyranny.'
Both stories show the author's general social preoccupations.
Mary is confronted with hunger, want of education, poverty and misery, but her reaction is melancholic: 'I have been wounded by ingratitude'.
Maria attacks 'the enslaved state of the labouring majority' and 'the evils which arise in society from the despotism of rank and riches.' She appeals for more social justice.
'Maria' is a much stronger work than 'Mary'. It has a better plot and its message is still actual.
'Matilda' was considered too shocking to be published for over a century, because it treats a taboo passion: incest.
It is a powerful portrait of a fatal attraction between a father and his daughter.
It is brilliantly written by an intelligent and very well read author: 'more lovely than a sunbeam, slighter, quicker than the waving plumage of a bird, dazzling as lightning and like it giving day to night, yet mild and faint, that smile came.'
The stories are excellently introduced by Janet Todd.
Highly recommended.
I love you.......2004-11-23
When Matilda's dad admits to his daughter that he loves her the world falls apart for them both. How can this be so? Mary Shelley creates a scenario - so similar to aspects of her own childhood - that makes sense of this. The love expressed in this ever-so-ambiguous word is, in this case, the inappropriate form of love. What disappoints me about this is that no-one recovers from this situation, and others continue to be damaged/hurt. Once again, as I've seen in so many other works of fiction, the 'damaged' person is given no chance of recovery, of rising above the disaster.
Mary Shelley is such an interesting person (far more interesting than the popular interpretations of her novel Frankenstein suggest) but to appreciate her, even in part, I believe you need to consider her parents. Her father was William Godwin, perhaps the real originator of anarchism (although I don't think he used that word). He was a firm believer that people acting alone can achieve more and better than is achieved by having them controlled and imposed on by laws and governments. Mary's mother was Mary Wollstonecraft - a champion of equal rights for women. When Mary became pregnant, Mary and William chose to get married - not for themselves - they didn't believe in the institution of marriage - but for the child. Sadly Mary Wollstonecraft died in childbirth and William was left with a new baby (whom he named Mary after her mother) and a slightly older girl, Fanny. All of William's beliefs that people should live their own lives in their own preferred ways was challenged by Mary - especially in her relationship with the poet Percy Bysse Shelley whom she married (hence the name Mary Shelley).
When Mary lost her own baby boy William (named after her father?), she got some of her grief out by writing Matilda. But it appalled William and he refused to allow it to be printed. Even the strongest philosophies will fall apart!! But if you read Matilda and recall the facts of William and Mary's lives, you will see why.
This is a valuable book, containing not only Mary's short novel Matilda, but also two works of her mother.
Recommended other reading:
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley (this is a thoughtful and serious work)
Enquiry Concerning Political Justice - William Godwin (this is very long but is also very thoughtful and a great lead in to reading more accessible anarchists such as Peter Kropotkin, as well as less accessible ones like Max Stirner)
Caleb Williams - William Godwin
