Book Description
Methylation of DNA at cytosine residues as well as post-translational modifications of histones, including phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation and ubiquitylation, contribute to the epigenetic information carried by chromatin. These changes play an important role in the regulation of gene expression by modulating the access of regulatory factors to the DNA. The use of a combination of biochemical, genetic and structural approaches has allowed demonstration of the role of chromatin structure in transcriptional control. The structure of nucleosomes has been elucidated and enzymes involved in DNA or histone modifications have been extensively characterized. Since deregulation of epigenetic marks has been reported in many cancers, a better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms bears the promise that new drug targets may soon be found. The newest developments in this quickly developing field are presented in this book.

Star wars with history.......2000-07-25
With this book a known mathematician A.T.Fomenko presents his outrageous conception of world history. This book may be recommended only to the prepared reader, who is ready to trace every speculation and calculation of the authors to find absence of common sense.
To date the catalogue of stars containing 1028 stars from Chapters VII and VIII of the Almagest, the authors select on the basis of obscure criterion in contradiction with the logic of astronomical observations, and the words of Ptolemy himself only 8 stars of "informational kernel" as they call it. From these 8 stars only one - Arcturus has pronounced proper motion. As the systematical errors in latitudes of all stars in Bootes is very large, the authors obtain their X-th century. Than the authors select 18 observations of lunar eclipses which are provided by Ptolemy in the Almagest. Ignoring the precise dates and other information and taking only phases and separations in years, they find 18 medieval eclipses from which one third could not be observed at all in eastern hemisphere! After that they try to calculate 4 occultations of planets and find 4 dates with absolutely enormous errors in degrees. This immediately raises the question on the acquaintance of the authors with elementary technique of astronomical calculations. In only more or less appropriate date for Venus (but the calculations show that the distance was still 50 times (!) more than given) during the "occultation" in 2 degrees the Sun was shining!
It seems that the authors have read the book "How To Lie With Statistics" - by Darrell Huff very attentively, unfortunately that can not be said about the works of generations of scholars studying the Almagest.

Despite what one of the reviewers above claims, this IS the original, unabridged French classic novel. It is over 1500 pages long (not the mere 150 pages claimed). It is a beautiful, classic story, with the gorgeous prose and intricate plots which Dumas is renowned for. One of my absolute favorite books. Of course, this particular ISBN is written in French.
The Count of Monte Cristo in the original French.......2000-10-03
Twenty-five years ago, I was in freshman college French class, and could read plays and short stories by the great French authors. A recent visit by a French exchange student showed me how much I'd forgotten, so I decided to try reading French again. This great tale by Alexandre Dumas was the perfect way to start: it's the familiar story of false imprisonment and exceedingly complex revenge in the early 19th century. This is the unabridged version with each of 2 volumes running to 750 pages, so it became my bedtime companion for months. Dumas is a wonderful story-teller, almost always amusing or exciting. It's light reading; my old vocabulary wouldn't have been up to metaphors or symbolism. The only draw-back is a lack of footnotes: much of the action takes place in Italy and the text is sprinkled with some Italian terms that I couldn't translate. The Oxford English translations of Dumas' works offer little tidbits of historical and geographic information that are very helpful in understanding context; none of that is available here. Overall though, I heartily recommend this edition for the reader who wants to wade into the original works of a great French novelist.
Cliffnotes in French?.......2000-03-31
It's a pity that Amazon's description of this item isn't more complete--I never would have ordered it. This item is NOT a novel! It is not the original French version of Alexandre Dumas' classic adventure. The closest I can come to describing this book is that it must be the French equivalent of Cliffnotes!
The book itself is only about a 130 pages long. The story contained in it is a pathetic paraphrasing of the actual novel, condensed and simplified to make an interesting study guide for the student. I'm not sure how the author hoped to accomplish this, though--the entire story is changed.
This book might be of value to someone who only wanted to read something in French. It has notes in the margins to explain words that might be unfamiliar, and is rather easy reading. But if you're looking for anything more than that, you'd be better off taking a trip to Paris yourself and picking up your own copy.
