Try another book.......2007-09-01
I had to purchase this book for a class I am taking. This is a fourth edition book and I have to correct errors before reading each chapter. I give publishers some leeway on a first edition, but by the fourth the kinks should be worked out. Also, there is some crucial information missing when making the calculations and sometimes it does not give enough detail on how to work through the problems.
Basic and Clincial Biostats, Scientific Perspective.......2007-06-28
The book is very detailed and an excellent read and resource for anyone who is in the field of science and someone who reads scientific peer-reviewed journal articles. Though there were some errors in some calculations in the book, overall, it is very helpful and a great way to learn biostatistics and applications in the clinical setting and research settings.
definitely not helpful for 'basic' or introductory level.......2007-04-08
I have very little background in biostats, and need to learn it for medical research and research design.
This book is difficult to read, has far too much emphasis on mathematics and far too little empahisis on concept. After a whole quarter in Biostats using this book, I can tell you very little about how and when to employ certain basis statistics tests or interpret them with confidence. The answers in the back are ofter erroneous, as is some of the text (according to my professor).
The only thing I can seay that is good about this test is that the NCSS software that comes with it I think may be helpful at some point.
I am back in the market for a better book!
Good Primer.......2005-08-18
I bought this book in 1990 (an older version) and have never had a statistics course. I have found it to be an extremely helpful starting point for the application of statistical tests to biomedical problems. From this I have gone on and used more sophisticated tools for computation and have only rarely needed to seek out the advice of experts.
The book is packed full of information and covers the broad range of problems most often encountered in biomedical science. It emphasizes an understanding of the choice an appropriate test for a given problem. Flow charts also help guide the user to the right test and the correct chapter. For this reason I have come back to it repeatedly over the years and it has become well worn. It is sparse on explanation of the statistical or mathematical proofs of methods so it is more of a cookbook than as a theoretical treatise.
Pretty Good.......2004-08-19
I actually thought this book was pretty good. I haven't used the cd. The definitions are pretty clear. I use this in conjunction with Gordis' Epidemiology for quick review. I find Rothman and Greenland is not good for that. When I am thinking about research design and elements of statistical analysis this book is easy to turn to to just go over why one test may be better than another--I am a medical student with an MPH in epi who has worked on several research projects, and I think this book is pretty helpful as a simple aid in the transition from research assistant to co-investigator.

Extremely Board Specific.......2004-06-16
I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.
The best source for USMLE.......2003-12-14
Are you one of those people that are scared of Biostatistics? Fear no more!! This book is for you. It explains everything in a very smart and simple way. Plenty of examples and tests help you to master the subject. If you study this book well, you will "understand" biostatistics and you don't have to memorize nonsense informations. two thumbs up!

This dandy little book shares the keys of understanding college biostatistics with you. It's what you need to know to pass exams, boards and the like. It provides clear instruction on the essentials of descriptive and inferential statistics, hypothesis testing, correlational techniques, research methods, and statistics in epidemiology. For those who struggle with beginning and intermediate statistics classes, it's a jewel.

Customer Reviews:
The backwards book for biostatistics.......2007-03-23
At the time I was taking bio-statistics for my MPH at Harvard School of Public Health, a friend was taking a different class using this book. I ended up buying it, but only as a reference. Althought the material is all here, the organization is scrambled with theory intermixed with the example that starts the topic discussion - some may like this, but personally it drives me crazy. At the end of the semester, I had a wonderful grasp of statistics, and my friend was pulling his hair out. One real plus of this book is that the index includes the clinical examples that generate the discussion, so I do use this book as a reference for "like-problems".
My Prof had trouble understanding the book!.......2006-12-18
My prof had us buy this book for an intro stats class for grad school. She didn't know how good it would be, but thought it applied to our health policy program. This book was not very good. At one point even our prof said she did not like the book and thought the practice questions were unclear at times. Unless your prof forces you to use this book, I would look at easier books (this is not good for a basic stats class). We also used SAS and this book wasn't any help with that portion of the course. It was not worth the $110 price tag. If you are a prof looking for a stats book, please don't select this one (the price alone is crazy).
Poor layout.......2006-11-10
I was assigned this text for my biostatistics class. Unfortunately, it is a poorly designed textbook, as everything is 'backwards'. Rosner gives examples before he introduces the material; he derives formulas before giving the real equation to use.
The only good thing about the text are the summaries included on the CD-rom. I have decided to read these instead of the actual text, because they are straightforward and leave out extraneous material.
Awesome Biostats Primer!.......2006-02-01
I'm currently an undergraduate student at Univ. South Florida majoring in social work (BSW). I am also doing a math minor because I plan on going on to graduate school in a dual program, social work (MSW) and public health-biostatistics (MSPH).
Having read through the first five chapters (can't put the book down), I found this textbook gives just enough information on the subject matter without going into math theory. Afterall, biostatistics is an applied field not theoretical.
This is a perfect textbook to get primed in the field of biostatistics. I cannot wait to finish this text and learn more theory and history of the many facets that biostatistics has to offer as it relates to the behavioral sciences.
The one drawback about the book is that it does not offer much on how to use a statistical analysis software package, rather it assumes knowledge in this area and just provides the data sets used in the book. A supplimental workbook for this text on the after mentioned topic would be wonderful.
Fundamentals of Biostatistics by Rosner.......2005-11-17
This is an easy-to-read volume on the implementation of statistics for medicinal applications. The author describes the following:
- measures of location i.e. medium white blood counts
- properties of the standard deviation and special case analyses
- graphic methods
- laws of probability
- gynecological problems
- demographic problems and inference
- hypothesis testing and confidence interval analysis
- goodness of fit for regression problems
This work would have a wide audience of readers throughout the
medical world. It is priced reasonably for consumer-conscious
purchasers. The author provides a rendition geared to practitioners. Much of the work is crafted for technical
analysis by professionals , as opposed to theoretical mathematics. For instance, the volume is useful to confirm
medical hypotheses within predefined confidence intervals.
Some reviewers have indicated that the later part of the text
is complicated. For instance, the t-distribution and estimation
techniques may require a simpler explanation. In college, I took
nine reasonably rigorous courses in higher mathematics.
During those courses, I found that the Schaum's Outlines were
good in the areas of calculus, differential equations,
linear algebra, probability and statistical inference. Each
outline provided nearly 1000 solved problems with both theory
and practice explained comprehensively. Students of the Rosner
text would be helped immensely by the Schaum's Outline Series.
This acquisition is still quite good for the price charged.

Great reference text.......2006-02-27
This text is a great reference for everything from basic analysis to more advanced topics like longitudinal and time-to-event data. The book is well-written with relevant, current examples. If I had to choose one reference book, this would be it because of its depth and breadth of content (at the intermediate level).
From an M.D.'s perspective taking a Masters Degree in Stats.......2002-07-10
This was a terrible book. To say that it is user unfriendly is an understatement. It is wordy and too long, furthermore, it doesn't teach you what you need to know. It is difficult to reference things (for example, try looking up sensitivity in the index!) and the writing is very tangential. This is not a good book if you are just starting out. I would not receommend it.
nice intermediate level text in biostatistics.......2000-06-28
The authors write well and cover most of the important topics very thoroughly. They motivate the subject very well with a number of important and "real world" examples in the first chapter.
A unique feature is its detailed coverage of sample size determination in a number of contexts.
The book was published in 1993 which is not recent enough to cover advances in meta analysis, resampling, Bayesian Hierarchical Models (with Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods) and frailty models. At least bootstrap methods and meta analyses are mentioned in the book.
Noteworthy are the full chapters on multiple comparison problems and discriminant analysis. This is an excellent reference book for biostatisticians.

Book Description
This monograph is devoted to the development of value theory of computable general prices in cost-benefit analysis under fuzzy rationality. The book demonstrates the use of fuzzy decision algorithms and logic to develop a comprehensive and multidisciplinary cost-benefit analysis by taking advantage of current scientific gains in fuzziness and soft computing. The theory is developed at a basic level of microeconomics leading to aggregation in fuzzy decision environment composed of subjective phenomenon, imprecision, approximations and problems of information elicitation. The book integrates the theories of computable prices, fuzzy decisions and social decision-choice processes into a set of decision algorithms accessible to practitioners, researchers, graduate students, and policy makers in economics, engineering, as well as physical, social, and medical sciences.

Book Description
God has a plan for every Christian believer. Every believer has special talents and powerful gifts that God is excited about unleashing. These gifts and talents are a part of the plan that God has established for us. We all need to be willing to work the plan that He has for each of our lives. Yes, there is a plan for you, my friend, and this writing is designed to help you to better understand God's plan for your life. In today's religious society of prophetic words and revelations, we are constantly prophesying and speaking the promises that God has spoken through us for other individuals. However, it seems that no one is aware of the process, or even willing to be processed for the promise. I desire that you follow God's plan for your life. I desire that you enter into your place of rest, peace, joy and prosperity. There is a place such as this, and, beloved friends, it's anticipating your entrance.

This is the most interesting historical fiction romance type story I've ever read. I couldn't put it down. I checked it out from the library but half way through the book I decided that I would buy it so I can read it again. And again. And again. I highly recommend it!
A surprising good book.......2004-12-22

After Davis marries the selfish Roberta, Gervase leaves the Wingate household and goes to work for Florence Nightingale and Gervase follows her to the Crimean where Gervase meets Davis again. But following an accident Gervase is once back to Wingate Hall to take care of Davis.

To read The Ways of God is to sit in a polished pew on Sunday morning at the local Southern Baptist church, listening to a well-thought-out sermon series. Bestselling author Henry Blackaby (Experiencing God) and coauthor Roy Edgemon expound on simple scriptural truths about God, point by point, in short, topical bursts that can easily be assimilated by the reader. Familiar stories and personal anecdotes pepper the text, heavily seasoned with appropriate scripture.
The authors examine five facets of the "ways of God," starting with the premise that God's ways are not the ways of the world. God's ways, they write, are those of love. God's ways are also sovereign: "God is in control. God can stop a storm or an earthquake because He is sovereign. He can save the vilest sinner because He is sovereign." Because of this, the authors believe that peace, rather than worry, should reign in us throughout every circumstance. "People watching you go through the same situation that they go through should see the difference that your God-based outlook makes."
God's ways are true. "Jesus rebuked unbelief because it denies Him. If something is true, that should settle it." God's ways are also eternal: "If you talk about Jesus, you had better live what you talk, or you can blur in time what people should be seeing of eternity."
No room for mystery, doubt, or questioning here--just good, old-fashioned, biblical preaching. --Cindy Crosby
Book Description
Have you ever wondered how God is at work in this world? How is God accomplishing His purposes and revealing His will to His people, ever molding them into the holy people He wants them to be? In this newest book from Dr. Henry Blackaby, the ways of God are explored so that Christians might share a glimpse of understanding of things too great for the mind to hold. Dr. Blackaby discusses how the ways of God reflect His nature and glory, how they are different from the ways of man, and are constant and consistent with His word. The ways of God are to bring His children into holiness in order to enter into a relationship with them. Eternal and mysterious are the ways of God.

Speaking to Americans who are skeptical about religion, but nonetheless feel a spiritual hunger, Winifred Gallagher offers a humorous and profound discussion about the state of national spirituality. Before writing this book, Gallagher made her living reporting on behavioral sciences (The Power of Place). Relying upon her impressive research skills and powers of observation, Gallagher decided to embark on a pilgrimage to resolve her uncertainty regarding the role religion would play in her life. She meditates in a Zen monastery, meets with the head of an African American mosque, journeys to Israel, and enters the protective fold of cloistered nuns. In the process she comes to many provocative conclusions, including the following:
I'm beginning to grasp that religion needn't focus on beliefs, but can at least begin with trust in your own experience of what is, but is mysterious--a different kind of challenge for a neoagnostic.... Most important, I'm already thinking of religion as a process of working on God.
--Gail Hudson
Book Description
Millions of Americans are finding it more and more difficult to apply the traditional demands of organized religion to their lives, and yet a complete absence of spirituality leaves them uneasy. Working on God is a book for and about such intelligent, independent people, who are seeking to reconcile their spiritual yearnings with their skeptical intellects. Winifred Gallagher, a behavioral-science reporter, began her investigation of religion in our postmodern age with research and interviews and soon discovered a vast, quiet revolution under way among ordinary men and women grappling with the sacred. Both Gallagher's brilliant journalistic inquiry and her very personal journey unfold over time spent in a Zen monastery and a cloistered convent, in small-group discussions and healing rituals, in a Conservative synagogue that shares spaces with a Christian church, and in the birthplace of the New Age. Written with humor, empathy, and a rigorous curiosity, Working on God breaks new ground in depicting the broad-based spiritual movement that is transforming many lives.

To Seek a Newer World.......2003-10-25
I think that it was Karl Marx who wrote that religion is the opiate of the masses. Certainly we all know folks who are extremely devote and yet we all could admit that probably more wars and carnage have taken place in the name of religion than any other subject. Winifred Gallagher, in her book, is attempting to show us another side of religion, a side where religion is a process, a process of "working on God". For this is a book both about and for independent thinking people who are attempting to reconcile spiritual beliefs with their own somewhat skeptical intuitive rationales. For me, this was a book that confirmed my beliefs and yet challenged me, all at the same time. A central theme is that we are all, more or less, on a spiritual journey, and are called, if you will, to this time and this place, be it Reston, Virginia or Greenwich, Connecticut or wherever. According to Ms. Gallagher, this journey is most important because it is not made alone but with others, others of even differing faiths than our own. Her sense of spirituality is not the opiate of Marx but rather is one of being aware, awake, and living a life that is present.
Many of the people that she writes about start out in life having more than enough and yet, they don't have enough. In their growth, if that's the right word, something starts to happen, something that has to do with holding on to what's important to them and letting go of what is not. Ms. Gallagher presents some heartwarming instances, such as the stranger in church who tells her that he will pray for her critically ill son or the young Hasidic mother she sits next to on a cross country flight. These people give her a different view of "other" and allow us to realize that, when it comes to things that matter, we are more alike than we all care to admit. For that reason, she would probably argue that perhaps we should center our lives on the charity of our being and not in the virtue of religion.
This is the type of book that looks at both sides of the spiritual coin. Along these lines, St. Paul is attributed to have said, "In order to know thyself, prove all things to strengthen your faith". Leonardo Da Vinci once wrote that man should have faith in his own gifts and nurture them to the fullest. Ms. Gallagher would appreciate the irony here, for a scientist is saying "have faith" while a saint is saying "prove all things". Towards the end of the book, she makes an interesting statement: "Faith is the meaning of history". Teilhard de Chardin might say it is even (dare I use the word) evolutionary. So, therefore, I came away from this book feeling that I understand what Ms. Gallagher is saying about anyone's spiritual journey. The message may very well be that all that was is part of me, as I am part of what's to be. Well done, Ms. G.
Reads Like a Long Newspaper Article.......2000-09-20
Having "Worked on God" myself for quite a while, and still finding religion a mystery, I set out to read a book with a promising premise. I suppose I would fall in her created category called searching "neoagnostic," but I found little new, educational, or rewarding after reading this book. In fact, by the end, I grew irritated at Gallagher's cafeteria approach to experiencing spirituality.
Joseph Campbell said one purpose of religion is to throw you out of the focus on yourself and into a relationship with the mystical. Gallagher seems enamored by this aspect of religion brought about by the holiness and solemnity of a church, synagogue, zen retreat, etc., but never commits beyond a sentimental brush with each faith. Her book is just one warm and fuzzy feeling after another. She never really makes any progress on her work, and I find it hard to understand why she decided to document her disconnected experiences in a book.
If you're looking to expand your knowledge with a comparison of different religions, skip this book and pick up Huston Smith's classic "The World's Religions." If you'd like any easy book with the depth of a newspaper series, this book might just do.
An American-Spirituality Travelogue.......2000-09-17
_Working on God_ covers a number of themes, all of which are intertwined with one another, yet could be somewhat categorized if needed. These three are the three that I believe are the most important and prevalent in the work.
Topic 1: American Spirituality
Can one possibly be a religious - or even "spiritual" - person in turn of the century/end of the millenium America? If so, how is this done? Gallagher visits a number of "millenial" houses of worship and discusses through her own insights and conversations with those attendees, how one may actually make this work.
Topic 2: Baby Boomer Spirituality (Or, American Spirituality II)
Gallagher, a baby boomer, is at many points in this book wrestling with her own previously held notions about spirituality and life - it makes me think, in many ways, of a sort of mid-life spiritual crisis. Is it possibly to be a child of the sixties, yet believe in the usefulness of science, and the reality of God? For the baby boomer generation, how will their own spirituality going to be sought after and found? Again, Gallagher turns to those who seem to make it work to find answers to these questions.
Topic 3: Millenial Religion
Perhaps one the biggest theme in the book yet, in the end, I feel that it may also be the least discussed and least well-defined. Sure, one can throw around the term "millenial religion," but that doesn't mean one understands it. Yet, who does understand history when it is in the making? Gallagher turns to the world-renowned Huston Smith to discover some of the issues (possibly) confronting religion at the turn of the century/millenium, as well as several other experts on point.
It would have been nice if this book had been more documented with footnotes, so that the reader could look up some of the sources that are quoted. There are a number of books listed in the footnotes section that will certainly make for interesting reading, though.
I do not know what Gallagher's purpose in writing this book was. She does not seem to hold any dogmatic agenda whatsoever, and if anything, the book seems to be more of a portrait of current American Spirituality than anything else. I think that it may actually be good that Gallagher does not - or, is not able to - answer the above questions, though, since at this point in the game, discussing millenial religion will be a topic for the history books of the future, not one for believing, dis-believing, or non-believing writers today. Her work is a good insight, though, into the current trends in the religious attitudes of Americans, and is better company on a rainy day than a number of other contemporary religious works.
From a skeptic's point of view.......2000-07-11
That's how Winifred Gallagher, self-avowed neo-agnostic, approaches her exploration of the various religious paths available today. She investigates the whole gamut of spirituality from New Age practices at Esalen to Islam, Zen Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity in its various forms. Although by the end of her journey, she has settled into life as an Episcopalian with Judaic study habits and Zen meditation practices, she admits this is not the path for anyone. Gallagher is essentially an encourager, pushing each of us to explore the spiritual dimensions of life and find a path that resonates for us... a path we can follow with passion. Highly recommended.
317 pages of text, maybe 50 pages of content.......2000-04-17
Winifred Gallagher swings between extreme level of detail in mundane details - for example "One day, we have coffee in the Hungarian Pastry Shop, a hallowed sanctuary of West Side artists and academics that's just across the street from the cathedral" to simultaneously skimming over all but the most superficial details of any of the faiths she surveys. Self indulgent, she comes across clearly in her own words as a "bumbling dilettante". Her writing and analysis is based on her own limited experience, brief forays into the faiths she explores and interview quotes. She seems more interested in capturing the superficial details surrounding these conversations rather than understanding the complexities of religious thought expressed.

The Law always works ..........2000-01-02
This was first published in 1934 and is a tremendous link in our objective to discern Truth. We are treated to great examples of God's laws, miracles, desires, giving, goodness, hurry, what will people think, reciprocity, and news. "Law always works - anywhere - everywhere - now and forever. Two and two make four, by mathematical law, in New York or Kansas City, in Paris or Tokyo, in the cathedral or in prison, in the home or the dive, on earth or Mars, today or in Caesar's time, now or in eternity."
