Book Description
Landscape ecology and conservation biology are rapidly developing disciplines, and a current synthesis of principles and applications in these two fields is needed under one cover. Many managers are not applying principles of landscape ecology in efforts to conserve biota, yet the loss of biological diversity could be reduced if broad-scale processes and patterns were consistently considered in management and conservation decisions. Bringing together insights from leaders in landscape ecology and conservation biology, this book explains how our knowledge about landscape ecology can help us understand, manage and maintain biodiversity. Beyond explaining pertinent concepts of landscape ecology and biological conservation and describing examples of their use in management, research and planning, this book also distills principles for applying landscape ecology in conservation, identifies gaps in current knowledge and provides research approaches to fill those voids. The book is divided into five parts: the first part introduces the book and discusses what landscape ecology is and why it is important to biological conservation. The second deals with multiple scales, connectivity and organism movement. The third part discusses landscape change and how this affects biodiversity, and the fourth part covers conservation planning. The final part presents a synthesis that identifies overarching principles, pervasive constraints and realistic prospects for applying landscape ecology in biological conservation. Conservationists, land-use planners, and ecologists will find this book to be an essential resource. Foreword by Richard T.T. Forman.

Book Description
Phase transitions occur in several processes of physical and engineering interest. This book deals with the analysis of models of solid-liquid systems. Its main purpose is to offer an introduction to the classical Stefan problem and to some of its physically motivated extensions.
The presentation is characterized by a strict interplay between physics and mathematics. Macroscopic, mesoscopic and two-scale models for Stefan-type problems lead to the formulation of initial and boundary -value problems for nonlinear PDEs Their analysis is developed in the framework of Sobolev spaces. Nucleation and surface tension phenomena are also discussed and new results are presented. All the analytical tools used are illustrated, to make the volume self-contained. Special concern is devoted to variational inequalities, to the recently developed technique of compactness by strict convexity.
This book is aimed at students and researchers in applied mathematics and in nonlinear PDEs, and also at physicists and engineers with mathematical background.

models of phase transitions.......2000-06-20
This book focuses on Stefan problem which arises in many areas of physics. It deals both classical and weak stefan problem and also the relations between stefan problem and phase field equation. It covers from physical viewpoint to mathematical viewpoint. This self-contained book is recommended for math. graduate students who pursue this area.
Book Description
This process-oriented text—supplemented by 280 illustrations—is structured to provide students with a proper and practical approach to the development of drafting and related skills for the theatre.
Dennis Dorn and Mark Shanda emphasize the standard drafting and designing practices of the theatre industry through a series of projects and exercises that help the student in the development of research skills. The early sessions focus on the basics of lettering, tool introduction, geometric constructions, orthographic techniques, soft-line sketching applications, and dimensioning and notation skills. The authors also stress such ancillary skills as time and material estimation, shop-drawing nomenclature, and simplified drafting techniques such as pin graphics, theatre-drafting standards, and CADD processes.
Customer Reviews:
It could be better.......2001-11-13
This book does offer a lot of basics when it comes to theatrical drafting, but there are quite a few mistakes both within the text and in the worksheets given. It would be much better if updated.
A Good Resource.......2000-01-28
This is a fine text for anyone needing help with establishing assignments for a drafting course (for scene designers). Other than a few typographical errors, this is a great book. I wish it would be revised and updated.
Very good for the beginning drafter.......1999-04-25
We use this book for my Drafting class at Southwest Missouri State, it is very good. I like the worksheets and projects that are available for further comprehension of the drafting process.
A Great Learning Guide.......1999-04-01
This book fills in all the details missing from the basic theatrical drafting course, focusing on hand drafting, not CAD systems. Great for scene and lighting techs, but uses many of the same techniques as architectural drawing. Includes worksheets to practice on and explains everything clearly and with humor. Buy it!

Everything You Need To Know.......2002-02-08
I am a Scenic Designer for theatre and film. I work out of Los Angeles now but have travelled the world extensively with my work, and have designed and draughted shows for many of the top teatres and production companies. Never have I had the pleasure to see every nuance of this very complicated and specialised occupation covered so extensively. The book serves as an essential reader/guidebook for anyone who is embarking on a job in this or a related field, whilst also being incredibly useful to those of us who have been in the business for some time. The example drawings are beautifully displayed and explained with clarity in a precise and unpretentious language that suits everybody from the layman to the seasoned proffessional. I have nothing but admiration for John Blurton, who is himself one of the best in the business. Praise Heaven! Scenic Draughting has been delivered a Bible at last!
Customer Reviews:
Decent and economical.......2000-02-12
I used this book as part of a class I took in college. It is a fairly decent text with easy-to-grasp concepts, but the illustrations seem a bit cluttered. Good for beginner to intermediate drafters. Great price.

Book Description
This lavishly illustrated monograph features a selection of Fisher's recent projects for such legendary bands as Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones and U2, together with a text derived from a series of in-depth interviews with Fisher and his collaborators. This material has been organised into a series of thematic sections in which Eric Holding weaves a critical analysis of the broader cultural context into the specific circumstances of Fisher's career, producing a rich and illuminating discourse on this popular art form.
The notion of 'staged architecture' is fundamental to an understanding of Fisher's work and the way in which he designs for an audience/performer relationship. This includes the use of powerful visual codes and narrative themes which reinforce the message of the band and, in an age of marketing, ultimately informs their 'brand identity'. Staged architecture also refers to the importance of time in Fisher's work. This not only governs the way in which his dynamic environments transform during performance but also plays a critical role in the logistics of mounting a rock tour, the 'choreography of construction' that is required to ensure the these ephemeral structures are efficiently transported between venues.
In more than sixty full-colour spreads the diversity and power of Fisher's work is captured using hundreds of images, many of them previously unpublished, including sketches, presentation drawings, computer animations, technical drawings, video stills and spectacular photographs that provide a record of the events themselves.
Mark Fisher is a British architect with an international reputation for the design of spectacular rock concerts. Over the past 25 years he has created some of the most memorable rock shows ever staged. His designs include The Wall and Division Bell for Pink Floyd, Steel Wheels and Bridges to Babylon for the Rolling Stones, and Zoo TV and Popmart for U2. Many other distinguished rock artists have performed on his stage, including Elton John. R.E.M., Tina Turner, Phil Collins, Janet Jackson and Cher. He also designed numerous one-off events, including multi-media shows in Japan, spectacles for Jean-Michel Jarre and Aquamatrix, the nightly show at the Lisbon Exp98. He is currently working with Peter Gabriel on a show for the Greenwich Millennium Done in London.
