Book Description
Nico De Swert's fantastic floral arrangements are anything but traditional bouquets. They are more likely to resemble the bustle of an haute couture evening gown, an art installation, or an abstract explosion of colors and textures. Shunning traditional romantic floral design and instead striving for gorgeous artifice, De Swert challenges the viewer to see flowers and plants in a new light: as a medium, much like fabric or paint, for creating art.
In Living with Flowers, the accomplished floral designer and interior stylist offers a dazzling collection of new ideas for extraordinary floral arrangements: a sphere of tightly packed crimson roses overlaid with perfectly flat dark green leaves, mimicking a watermelon; or a dome-shaped tower of tiny mauve and lavender blossoms rising out of a pewter bowl. With color as its organizing principle, this exquisite book provides captions listing the wide range of flowers and plants used, as well as tips on how to extend their life and show them off to best advantage. A source guide for the best flowers and materials rounds out this exceptional volume. AUTHOR BIO: Belgian-born Nico De Swert has lived and worked in New York for seven years as a floral designer and interior stylist. His floral arrangements have appeared in leading magazines such as Martha Stewart Living; O, the Oprah Magazine; and InStyle. Wendell T. Webber shoots for a variety of publications, such as Martha Stewart Living and InStyle, as well as such companies as the Gap, American Express, and Mercedes-Benz.

Flowers as Art by Artist Nico De Swert.......2006-09-21
For sheer beauty this book of floral designs is one of the finest on the market. Published by Harry N Abrams in that publishing house's usual flair for quality of paper and color reproduction, LIVING WITH FLOWERS is a stunning volume that not only allows the viewer to see creative floral sculptures but also reveals resources not usually accompanying volumes such as this.
Floral designer Nico De Swert shuns the usual minimalist approach or the traditional look of flower arrangement and instead goes for masses of interesting forms and volumes of flowers and greens and plants, color keyed in unusual ways. The book is divided into sections that deal with color: oranges, yellows, blues, whites, reds - all sections are filled with seemingly endless ideas novel to this floral genius' mind.
But an equal part of the success of this book goes to photographer Wendell T. Webber whose skill as a still life photographer and whose sensitivity to lighting and focus make these creations by De Swert sing. This is a book for indulgence of the visual senses, yet it is also a stimulus for gardeners to look at the explosions of colors in the natural state in a new way. Highly recommended. Truly gorgeous. .......2006-06-12
Along with Madderlake's "Flowers Rediscovered", this is one of my favourite book of floral art. The photography is gorgeous and many of the designs are eminently do-able. I wish the vase suppliers were acknowledged individually...........I'm desparate to find the multi-opening vase on page 14.
A MASTERPIECE.......2006-05-31
I was truly amazed when I first saw this book,
one of the most beautiful books on floral design I have ever seen.
The work in this volume is that of an artist.
A must have for those who love art and floral design.
Congratulations Nico De Swert!
Lovely book.......2005-12-05
This is a lovely book...very well produced...best of the best. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for an elegant, yet fresh, approach to arranging flowers in your own home or for a special event. I'm glad I got this.
Book Description
* Displays innovative techniques for flower arranging * Over 200 photographs * Sakul Intakul has made floral installations for the Queen of Thailand * Sleek, contemporary, cutting edge design
Flowers have always been an integral part of the cultural fabric of Thailand and a constant reminder of the country's Buddhist heritage and identity. As in other Asian cultures, flowers are lavishly used in Thailand to mark rituals and rites of passage; they are indispensable in age-old acts of worship, in celebrations, and in daily life. On their way to work, many Thais offer flowers and a heartfelt prayer at wayside shrines. Every day, scores of women at the royal court create floral offerings for the venerated Buddha images in Bangkok's temples and palaces. Thai Airways routinely presents orchid corsages to female passengers.
This stunning and refreshingly original book goes beyond the everyday: it elevates flowers from mere floral arrangements to meditative floral "installations." Created from a combination of exotic and colorful tropical flowers, plant materials--fibers and leaves from banana plants and coconut trees, culms and twigs from bamboo--and unconventional materials like wire netting, harmoniously blend a strong, usually three-dimensional, structure with the sweet and subtle elements of flowers. The philosophy behind the arrangements, the interiors or occasions for which they are appropriate, and a brief explanation of the techniques and materials employed will inspire readers to create their own artistic arrangements.

Tropical Colors.......2006-05-22
I own hundreds of books on all types of design. This book on design with tropical flowers is the absolute most beautiful I have. The ideas depicted in this book are very simple for the most part and easy to do. And yet, the designs create a spectacular effect.
Beautiful Flowers.......2006-01-16
This book is a feast for the eyes. I stumbled on this book in a bookstore and was just mesmerized by the pictures. Beautiful exotic flowers in vivrant colors are arranged artfully in creative settings. Photography is brilliant.

You may be inspired to begin building your own pond as soon as you finish reading this book. Ms. Nash has crafted a fine book for those who appreciate the beauty of nature. Customer Reviews:
Not a great investment.......2007-09-14
Book does not have a lot of solid information a gardener can use. Lots of beautiful photos but not enough tips to succeed on creating a garden from seed.
Gardening From Seed The Keys to Success With Flowers and Veg.......2001-08-01
Not too bad. Good for beginner as a general overview but not enough information I was expecting to find.
Martha Knows How to Garden!.......2001-07-11
Gardening from Seed is a very indispensible book about gardening . It covers all aspects of gardening, from flowers to vegetables. I love this book !!!!!
From Seed to Sow, but What Next?.......2000-04-09
The latest installment of the Martha Stewart book collection is, of course, filled with extravagant, glossy pictures, tips from insiders, and suggested retailers from whom to buy certain products which, presumably, Martha uses herself. However, this tiny book leaves something to be desired. First, several terms are introduced in the meat of the book that are never defined in the glossary or elsewhere (e.g. "deadheading"). Second, the instructions stop at the outdoor-planting phase, thus failing to inform readers on how best to prune plants and how to harvest seeds directly from plants for future use. Third, there are a number of typographical errors not usually associated with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. While the plant index toward the back of the guide is useful, as is the section on tips for eradicating garden pests, your best bet is to purchase a more thorough (and, yes, more expensive) book from Burpee or Better Homes and Gardens if you want an in-depth and all-inclusive guide to the world of gardening from seed.
Just the ticket.......2000-03-25
I bought a house in February (my first) and was so excited to plant that I started seeds indoors ... then came: "What do I do now! " This book is helping me grow all kinds of vegetables and flowers indoors first, in anticipation of Spring, Summer, Fall .... thanks, Martha.

Flowers, says author/florist/designer J. Barry Ferguson, "feed our minds and imaginations with new possibilities." Each season has its own unique blooms which thrive with a little love and attention whether it be green hollies in the winter, bright yellow spring tulips, the heady roses of summer, or the hardy, late-blooming mums of autumn. And with the abundance of cut flowers, you can turn your home into lovely, fragrant bower no matter what the season.
Ferguson adores flowers and his passion is evident on every page of Living with Flowers. Though at first the language may seem a bit high-faluting, it quickly becomes apparent that he speaks with reverence of nature's wonders and considers working with flowers a form of worship. As you read on, he draws you in; soon you see how a bouquet of sunflowers could transform your dining room and imagine how tranquil it would be to find a nosegay of posies on your bedside table.
Whether you live in a city apartment or on an acre in the country, Ferguson has suggestions on how to integrate flowers into your everyday life. "Flowers do give a room a touch of your own personality," he says, "and speak of what is meaningful to you, no matter if the signal is quiet and modest or loud and clear." He includes sections on special occasions, flowers as gifts, and herbs, followed by where to buy and how to care for your flowers. The photography is inspiring, giving examples of both mammoth displays and simple buds in vases. --Dana Van Nest
