Inuit Art: An Introduction
-
Cape Dorset Sculpture
ASIN: 0786418885 |
Book Description
Inuit art, both ancient and contemporary, has inspired the interest of scholars, collectors and art lovers around the globe. This book examines Inuit art from prehistory to the present with special attention to methodology and aesthetics, exploring the ways in which it has been influenced by and has influenced non-Inuit artists and scholars.
Part One gives the history of the main art-producing prehistoric traditions in the North American arctic, concentrating on the Dorset who once flourished in the Canadian region. It also demonstrates the influence of theories such as evolutionism, diffusionism, ethnographic comparison, and shamanism on the interpretation of prehistoric Inuit art.
Part Two demonstrates the influence of such popular theories as nationalism, primitivism, modernism, and postmodernism on the aesthetics and representation of twentieth-century Canadian Inuit art. This discussion is supported by interviews conducted with Inuit artists. A final chapter shows the presence of Inuit art in the mainstream multi-cultural environment, with a discussion of its influence on Canadian artist Nicola Wojewoda. The work also presents various Inuit artists' reactions to Wojewoda's work.

Customer Reviews:
A fine overview of the subject, beautifully illustrated.......2006-10-25
Ron Ransom has written a popular series of books for student painters, featuring his own techniques and illustrated with his own paintings. This book is something different. It is a tribute to his favorite watercolorists, illustrated with excellent reproductions and with a text that is respectful and full of usefull insights.
The term "impressionist" is used here in the sense of painters who work directly from their observation of nature. (This is not a book about the French Impressionist school of painting, although many of them were gifted watercolorists). Some of the painters are contemporary artists who are still working, and others are from the past. They all express a love of nature through their work, although they vary quite a bit in their individual styles.
Although it's not strictly a how-to manual, student painters can learn a lot from the book. BUt you don't need to be a painter to enjoy it. If you love watercolor paintings, and are curious about the thought processes and methods used by topnotch painters in this medium, you will enjoy this lovely book.
a delightful book.......2006-04-04
a useful survey of various prominent watercolorists, the book provides fundamental information about each artist, leading to the conclusion that however techniques may vary, the basic ingredient to produce great art is hard work and dedication.
An inspiring glimpse of some wonderful painters..........1999-06-07
The paintings of Edward Seago, Edward Wesson, Douglas Treasure, John Yardley and others more well known to Americans, such as Frank Webb and Claude Croney, are featured in this book. Ron briefly touches on each artist as a person and what inspired or inspires them to paint, and illustrates it all with a representative selection of their works. A very informative book and a good one to have for reference in one's art collection, as there aren't many watercolor impressionist books around.
Customer Reviews:
Simply a great book.......2003-12-09
In terms of painting style Taylor brings together the best elements of several artists to produce a classic impressionistic fresh watercolor style. The instructional material by Ron Ransom is extremely helpful. It even has a couple of pages in how to depict traffic in cityscapes! I also love Taylor's sensible 15 color palette (not too large, not to restricted) and how he employs it. No tricks--no pouring, salt, collage, stamping--just great loose on site plein air brushwork from a master. Somewhat similar in style to Mel Stabin or John Yardley.
A Truly Magical Book On Watercolour.......2003-11-09
David Taylors Artwork and Ron Ransons commentary combine to produce an outstanding work on watercolour painting. David has the ability to simplify the most complex scene into a magical piece of artwork: displaying bold brush strokes with the ability to get it right first time; His use of positive and negative space is brilliant, clearly showing an understanding of watercolour and how to bring out the very essence of his chosen subjects so beautifully.
I found the book inspiring me to greater achievement in my own painting and continually enjoy Ron's script its humour and the simple way he points the way, teaching through Davids work.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in watercolour, it teaches so much about the medium - it truly does go a long long way to solving the mystery of watercolour in a most enjoyable way.
Beautiful bold and loose style........2003-04-11
David Taylor's watercolor style is beautifully bold and loose. Ron Ranson has done a good production with this book, the illustrations are beautiful and many of them are really breathtaking. Taylor captures accurately the mood of the chosen subjects even with great economy of brushstrokes. The chapter of composition/design is the best depicted, with clear explanations and examples, however other sections are written with a lesser tutorial style. My main remark on this book is about a careless (intentional?) treatment of two illustrations: Page 26 shows a plate that is repeated with a different title on page 32 (there are some differences in color saturation and contrast that suggest digital manipulation). Illustrations on pages 117 and 127 are dealt in the same manner. Besides, the illustration of the dustjacket is not included inside the book. Nevertheless, this is one of the best books on watercolor that have been issued lately and we have had the chance to appreciate the artwork of this excellent Australian artist.

Big Brush Watercolor by Ron Ranson.......2003-01-19
Another book by a modern master, Ron should've called this the "Technique Bible". He keeps no secrets, and shares all knowledge in a very informal and down-to-earth style. Opening one of his books is like greeting an old, dear friend, and this one's no exception.
He details everything, from his choice of a few brushes to what to do with them. Everything for a beginning watercolorist is here, and a few tricks for the intermediate to advanced, also.
A well-written and well-illustrated book.
Nothing New.......1999-09-09
This is that kind of books where you will find the same things you can find in a lot of painting books. How to mix the colours, the paper categories. I thin is a waste of time, and of course of money.
The best of Ranson's how-to books.......1999-06-07
I've had a hardback copy of this book since it came out in 1989 in the UK and have used it a lot. It has a chatty, down-to-earth style, but also contains lots of very basic, useful hints for beginning watercolorists. Even if you don't want to use the hake brush he recommends, you can still learn lots and loosen up your style. One of my favorite books, if not my favorite artist!
Joyfully direct, Ron Ranson has what the beginner needs........1998-06-20
This book delivers the skinny on fast and loose watercolor painting. Ron's fun and direct manner evokes a much needed direction for the beginning and intermediate artist. I particularly enjoy his taste of subject matter and mode of application.
This book enables anyone on earth to paint watercolor........1997-12-14
A word to the wise is sufficient. That's why you don't need those small brushes to express those details in your painting. Paint freely and spiritfully with Ron Ranson is one thing a painter should try. A very good book for innovative painters.
Customer Reviews:
Intimidated by those fancy little tubes of paint?.......2002-05-05
Frightened by those broad, flat, expanses of white watercolour paper? Watercolour Fast and Loose is for you! This book "sweeps aside the false mystique" of painting with "techniques based on practical common-sense and a bit of home-spun psychology." This how-to, heavily illustrated, book investigates the value of paint, types of paper and even which brushes to use - and presents useful advise with almost unlimited enthusiasm.
As the author, watercolourist Ron Ranson states in the Introduction, his goal is to relate to the reader. Even though you've "waged the psychological struggle" before, only to have lost - by getting materials out and then being afraid to ruin that lovely sheet of white paper - this book will truly get you itching to try Ranson's methods.
Ranson's paintings and techniques in this book emphasise loose, free, impressionistic renderings of landscapes. If you're looking for cloying illustrations of nostalgic subjects and "hearts and flowers," you'll have to look elsewhere. This book is chockfull of advice on representing trees and skies, composing pictures, tonal values and simplifying photos to painting.
You will pick this book up again and again as your own "ouvre" develops, as it's the kind of advice you'd get if you were lucky enough to have a beloved English uncle - that could paint like only Ron Ranson can! For example; "You can't go through life avoiding figures in your landscapes - just because you're afraid of spoiling your pictures. Students often seem to belive that they need training in life drawing before they can portray them with confidence - this simply isn't true." And better yet, the author goes on to show you just exactly how to paint: outlining tools to use, many varying examples, and an absolulely indispensible "do's and don'ts" list that should be mandatory reading for every painter.
Another example in "The Materials" chapter; "This is going to be short chapter because the materials I'm going to show you are few, simple and reasonably cheap to buy." If a statement like that doesn't get you itching to paint, you can always go back to charcoals!
As a Sunday painter, struggling to do away with the inclination to "fiddle" with a painting until it becomes muddy, flat and contrived, I found Mr. Ranson's techniques to offer new hope of fresh, vital, majestic paintings. I recommend this book unreservedly.

Distilling the Scene--It works!!!.......2003-01-19
I have studied with Ron in the past and everything he teaches in his workshops is in this book! He definitely shows how to eliminate all the clutter when you're painting on location and get down to the "bare-bones" of it, creating more impact and life into your paintings.
The mainstay of the book is the Principles of Design which gives you a sort of checklist by which to gauge your painting's progress; he also places heavy emphasis on doing a tonal sketch first to allow you to sort out where your lights, mediums and darks go (something many students won't do). Using these principles has improved my painting abilities at least 150%.
His style of writing is easily read, and you feel as though you were talking with him, rather than reading a book.
If you can't take one of his classes, this is the next best thing!

Book Description
From the serenity of a color-streaked evening sky to the breaking light of a new day to the misty grayness after a rain shower, the ever changing sky dictates the whole mood and feeling of landscape painting. Master watercolorist Ron Ranson demonstrates how to capture the sky and improve the quality of your paintings, using a palette of only seven colors. He explains how to use a camera as a tool and photographs as a source to keep your work fresh, immediate, and spontaneous. A colorful gallery of finished paintings illustrates the results of the various techniques, and Ranson's constant enthusiasm provides plenty of encouragement. From clouds to sunlight to weather conditions, by successfully interpreting the beauty of the sky you will create more effective paintings every time you put brush to paper. A Selection of F&W's North Light Book Club. Studio Vista 128 pages (all in color), 8 3/4 x 10 7/8.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent instructional book, very good technical advice.......2006-10-25
This book covers only one topic, but it does it well. This is sound technical painting advice from a professional painter. If you are willing to practice with the tools and materials recommended in the book, you will learn a lot. The author paints in the traditional loose and atmospheric style of classic British watercolor. If you want to know how they do it, this book and the others in Ranson's series of instruction books, will be a good resource. Even if you don't choose to paint in this particular style, the book is worth a look because you can learn some painting skills that are applicabe to many other styles of painting.
Skies, by Ron Ranson.......2001-12-27
As a teacher of transparent watercolors for the past 10 years,I've found that painting skies is the first and formost lesson that a student must learn. This book is a valuable must for any new student. Ron shows all the basics needed to learn how to paint all types of dramatic skies. I still refer to this book to keep sharp! Jack...
bad beginner's book.......2000-10-18
ron ranson's name was known to me thanks to some of his video cassettes which are sold in belgian artshops since I already had the book where he explains how to use photographs for your paintings, skies being one of my favourite subjects - and as a beginner watercolour "painter" - I bought this book with much enthusiasm. And I got the "soufflé" effect - this book unfortunately is not at all of the same standards as the other book offers the shown paintings are flat, sad, boring, and he definitely is very patronizing - I am so sorry I bought this However I keep offering the other book (the one about photographs) to my painting friends, because here in belgium we paint a lot inside, and it is quite a useful book
watercolr.......1999-06-16
i don't now how
Not Ranson's best........1999-06-07
While a total beginner will learn much from this book, it is not going to inspire those who have already been painting for a little while. The teaching is typical Ranson, although verging on the patronising, but the Ranson examples of skies, to my taste, are not worth emulating. Stick to running classes, Ron, and give writing a break!
Book Description
Nearly fifteen years before the birth of gay liberation, the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) was the world’s first organization committed to lesbian visibility and empowerment. Like its predominantly gay male counterpart, the Mattachine Society, DOB was launched in response to the oppressive anti-homosexual climate of the McCarthy era, when lesbian and gay people were arrested, fired from jobs, and had their children taken away simply because of their sexual orientation. It was against this political backdrop that a circle of San Francisco lesbians formed a private club where lesbians could meet others in a safe, affirming setting. The small social group evolved over the next two decades into a national organization that counted more than a dozen chapters, and laid the foundation for today’s lesbian rights movement.
Different Daughters chronicles this movement and the women who fought the church and state in order to change not only our nation’s perception of homosexuality but how lesbians see themselves. Marcia Gallo has interviewed dozens of former DOB members, many of whom have never spoken on record. Through its leaders, magazine, and network of local chapters, DOB played a crucial role in creating lesbian identity, visibility, and political strategies in Cold War America.
Customer Reviews:
An Important Addition to LGBT History.......2007-07-01
Different Daughters is an important addition the library of anyone interested in the development of the lesbian and gay rights movement in the United States.
It covers the often neglected early days of the Lesbian Movement in the pre-Stonewall era from its humble birth in San Francisco and Los Angeles through its development into a broad based movement in the 1970s.
Yowza Beans.........2006-12-30
A look at one of the first lesbian organizations in America. Yowza Beans, I didn't know..Lots of famous people expoused them. Yowza. I liked Sally fielD in "Not Without My Daughter." Neat look at Women's oppression. Who the Heck's "Bilitis." Gonna check it out. Radical like Body Count's "Cop Killer" and Steven Lee Beeber's "The Heebie-Jeebies at cbgb's". A radical account of that (Yo Steve!)wonderful life. Wunderbar as my German motheR might say.
very good historical resource.......2006-10-31
This book is well written and well researched. I was so happy to see it. It is a rare more intimate look into lesbian history in America.
These women were amazingly brave and corageous in a time when you could still be arrested simply for being gay. It is a very interesting read.

Classic of erotic literature (1894), celebrating lesbian love, translation of original edition, complete with 161 sensuous illustrations by Willi Pogany.
Customer Reviews:
Good for Greek fen.......2005-09-24
I spent several days skimming this book. If you don't know, it was written by Pierre Louys who claimed he had found the lost works Bilitis in 1894. He perpetuated a really great literary fraud. It wasn't. He made them up. The author was referenced a couple of times in another book I read and I wanted it after reading it. The author of the book that mentioned it discussed it in the context of a person named Natalie Barney and how she should have been wondering about the fact that this gay guy was writing lesbian stuff. As such, well, very historical and I occassionally for the idea that it is classic so I shall like it! That said, it is poetry and it looks good... but honestly, not all my taste. It pretty much has that authentic Greek feel from what I remember reading but yeah. It isn't my taste in general. Well written but not my cup of tea.
great literary hoax.......2004-06-08
In the late 1890's this book was published as an ancient and recently unearthed work written by a disciple of Sappho, but it was really written by a young French erotic photographer/poet named Pierre Louys. Even the scholars of Greek antiquity and ancient Greek literature were at first duped! But despite Louys' deception, these poems are very nice, worth reading if you enjoy ancient love poetry with slight lesbian undertones.
David Rehak
author of "Poems From My Bleeding Heart"
Literary joke becomes sensual masterpiece..........2000-02-17
No one knew sensuality like the "Sapphic" Greeks and no one knew the "Sapphic" Greeks like Pierre Louys... well at least he liked to pretend that was the case. The fact is he (or his imagination) was so completely immersed in this culture that his images/syntax/symbols were authentic enough to dupe contemporary classics scholars of his day. Bilitis could have been a protege of Sappho... a literary force in her own right.

Product Description
These exquisitely crafted tales have provided inspiration to a wide range of artists, from Debussy, Gide, and Colette, to the directors of classic film noir. Originally banned in the United States, this first English translation from the original French editions recaptures the passionate writing that propelled Louys to the forefront of Fin de Siecle literature.
Customer Reviews:
Far too unknown author.......1998-07-06
I enjoyed Louys' work thoroughly, especially in the translation this volume gives. I have never met someone who has even heard of Louys, no less read him. However, his writing is simply beautiful, it is a pure joy to read. There is much more than just sensual imagery too; both works have great literary value. For example, in The Songs of Bilitis, Louys shows how this one ficticious girl living in ancient Greece changes through her life by means of her poetry. This great description can be applied to how everyone slowly changes during life and becomes more and more cynical. Anyway, it is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Hamilton and his failed attempt to be a movie director........2000-06-19
Based on The songs of Bilitis, a beautiful poetry book by Pierre Löuys (about a greek girl who falls in love with another girl) and French Impressionism (Renoir, Degas, etc) David Hamilton tried to translate his photo work to a movie. But a bad screen-play that left no trace of the original, a very pretentious musical score plus Hamiltons' total ignorance on movie direction led the project to terrible results. Maybe nowadays he's achieved a great level as an artist (on photography not on movie direction), he's in fact a master of Light and Shade as he showed on later books; but at the time of the movie he was a very famous mid-level photographer and mainly because of his excesive use of the fog effect. Even that, there were several beautiful photographic moments on the movie that the book lacks of. The book resembles more a big magazine article or a press release for the movie than a real photo book (the same applies to the Tender Cousins' book). I like Bilitis' story very much, but the one by Löuys, and I like Hamilton's later work too, but when it's presented on a real photo book and without his obsessive fog filter.

Scrap is the operative word here.......2004-09-16
His journal of the making of "A Summer in St. Tropez" is a better book if your criteria for selection is nude photos of young women. Though to give it its due, "Bilitis" features several young actresses who were at their prime when they did this movie. Read one review in which the reviewer griped that they were over 18. Well that is not a bad thing in my mind. A little offbeat for Hamilton and not one of his better books.
