Book Description

The Second X presents the fundamental principles of biology unique to women in a manner that challenges the traditional approach that considers women to be modified men. By removing the male lens through which women's biology has traditionally been viewed, the authors encourage readers to question prevailing opinions of women's (and men?s) capabilities and roles in society.

5 out of 5 stars A much needed manual.......2000-07-11

This book was written as a textbook for an introduction to the biology of women by two women who, as biologists, have both a deep understanding of their subject matter, and the skill to convey their knowledge to others. We all accept on at least a superficial level that women are different from men, and that their biology is unique and specific, but we often fail to know just how and where those differences are. In the history of western medicine many strictly feminine characteristics have been explained by men in masculine terms, and this book does not do that.

Other recent books on about women rhapsodize or celebrate the female body, but this one explains it. This is not a roadmap or a geography, this is an owners manual-like an owners manual for a high performance, sleek and exciting sports car-and like any maintenance manual for an exotic and tempestuous machine, it makes for interesting reading even if you don't happen to own one.

As a practical matter this manual should be in the hands of all the owners-young to old-and read by all those who love them.

        Book Description

This book fills the gap between volumes on wavelets that are either too advanced (in terms of mathematical background required) or that contain too little mathematical theory underlying wavelets. It presents most of the theory underlying Fourier analysis and wavelets in a clear and comprehensive fashion-- without requiring advanced background in real analysis. Provides a careful balance between theory and practical algorithms, and features a clear presentation of applications to digital signal processing--e.g., data compression, digital filtering and singularity detection. Includes illustrations and MATLAB code used in many of the algorithms. Inner Product Spaces. Fourier Series. The Fourier Transform. Discrete Fourier Analysis. Wavelet Analysis. Multiresolution Analysis. The Daubechies Wavelets. For anyone interested in Wavelets and Fourier Analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Informative Book for Wavelet Analysis!!!!.......2003-03-01

...this book is one of most informative and legible books on wavelt theories and applications.

The author paves the theoretical development about wavelets and multi-resolution analysis EXCELLENTLY. With this book, you can construct wavelets for your own applications in engineering and science disciplines.

This book is very good for first year engineering-majored graduate students and all engineering scholars.

4 out of 5 stars A good Starter on Wavelets.......2001-10-22

At the time of writing of this review (October 2001), a standard academic search procedure
produces about twenty references per week of scientific papers using wavelet analysis in a very wide spectrum of sciences. More than 160 english language books have been published on wavelets since the first books appeared around 1990. Yet even now it is rare to find a book on this subject which is aiming at undergraduate students and yet is mathematically responsible, without being heavy going. Boggess and Narcovich have tried to do just that, and to my mind have admirably succeeded.
Assuming a standard background knowledge in calculus and linear algebra that many science and engineering students acquire in their first two years at university, they present the basics of Fourier analysis and wavelets in eight brief chapters. To prepare the way, they start in chapter 0 with an introduction to inner product spaces, without using advanced analysis, and building on the experience with ordinary vector spaces.
Also a sniff of linear operator theory is offered.
Chapter 1 introduces Fourier series in real and complex form. These originated in the eighteenth century study of vibrations and in the theory of heat, made famous by Fourier's classic book of 1808: Analytical Theory of Heat. The mathematical claims Fourier made, but which he could not all prove himself, gave the impetus to an enormous development of both mathematical theory and applications in all fields of natural science, which is still going on today. The applications briefly mentioned here are denoising and compression of signals, and finding the solution of partial differential equations. Various aspects of the convergence of Fourier series are dealt with. All concepts are illustrated with a good set of clear figures, and the chapter finishes with exercises that are going from very elementary to a little more ambitious, sometimes involving the use of simple computer algebra tasks. This format is maintained thorugh the entire text, except for the last chapter.
Chapter 2 proceeds with the Fourier Transform, including the important theory of linear time invariant filters. The existence of the impulse response function and its convolution character are shown. As an example the noise reducing Butterworth filter is presented. Sampling and the Nyquist frequency are touched upon, and a derivation of the uncertainty relations, originally coming from quantum mechanics, is given.
To analyse discrete data, one needs the discrete Fourier Transform, which is the subject of chapter 3, including of course the Fast Fourier Transform. Also the z-transform is introduced. Examples given are elementary cases of parameter identification in vibration, numerical solution of ordinary differential equations, as well as in the exercises: noise reduction and data compression.

These first 153 pages serve as a good undergraduate introduction to Fourier analysis.
The second half of the book is devoted to wavelets. Chapter 4 deals exclusively with Haar wavelets which are the oldest wavelets because they date from 1910! These wavelets constitute an orthonormal basis of functions, which makes for fast calucation, a very important aspect for many applications. The core ideas of the central concept of a "multiresolution analysis" of a signal, can be demonstrated with these simple wavelets. All of this is already understandable without the machinery of the preceding Fourier analysis, so you could jump into the book here and start reading about wavelets right away, picking up the Fourier analysis from the first part bit by bit as the need arises. As applications denoising and compression are mentioned again, as is the detection of a discontinuity in a signal.
The general case of a multiresolution analysis is the subject of chapter 5. Again a large part of the discussion can be swallowed without the need of the Fourier transform point of view. The explanation of the structure of a multiresolution analysis leading to an orhtonormal basis of wavelets is straightforward and clear. It is only when we want to go into more detail about the precise characteristics of the underlying wavelet and scaling function that the Fourier point of view is introduced. This then leads up to the presentation of the famous Daubechies wavelets in chapter 6. These wavelets revolutionised the field after their publication in 1988.
Chapter 7 which closes the book, gives several short remarks about various other topics among which are two-dimensional wavelets, and the continuous wavelet transform.
This chapter is more sketchy than the others, and left me much less satisfied. Also the motivation why these subjects are chosen was lacking almost completely, and there are no exercises. I was particularly disappointed not to find any discussion of the relative merits of the continuous versus the discrete wavelet transform, and there is no mention of any application of the continuous case. Yet the latter is also used frequently in many important scientific applications, and it started the modern wavelet endeavour in the early eighties in France.
That being said I still think this is a very useful book for anybody wanting to start with wavelets at an undergraduate level. A few helpful Matlab Codes are collected in an appendix as well as the more difficult parts of some proofs. The exercises make this good course material, but as a text for self study it will also be quite satisfactory for many newcomers that find most of the existing books too demanding.

        Book Description

Wavelet theory had its origin in quantum field theory, signal analysis, and function space theory. In these areas wavelet-like algorithms replace the classical Fourier-type expansion of a function. This unique new book is an excellent introduction to the basic properties of wavelets, from background math to powerful applications. The authors provide elementary methods for constructing wavelets, and illustrate several new classes of wavelets. The text begins with a description of local sine and cosine bases that have been shown to be very effective in applications. Very little mathematical background is needed to follow this material. A complete treatment of band-limited wavelets follows. These are characterized by some elementary equations, allowing the authors to introduce many new wavelets. Next, the idea of multiresolution analysis (MRA) is developed, and the authors include simplified presentations of previous studies, particularly for compactly supported wavelets. Some of the topics treated include: o Several bases generated by a single function via translations and dilations o Multiresolution analysis, compactly supported wavelets, and spline wavelets o Band-limited wavelets o Unconditionality of wavelet bases o Characterizations of many of the principal objects in the theory of wavelets, such as low-pass filters and scaling functions The authors also present the basic philosophy that all orthonormal wavelets are completely characterized by two simple equations, and that most properties and constructions of wavelets can be developed using these two equations. Material related to applications is provided, and constructions of splines wavelets are presented. Mathematicians, engineers, physicists, and anyone with a mathematical background will find this to be an important text for furthering their studies on wavelets.

        5 out of 5 stars The Hernandez-Weiss wavelet book.......2002-07-01

The Hernandez-Weiss book is a great source in mathematics, where the reader can learn about
some fundamental and timeless tools of wavelet analysis. The presentation is clear and self contained. The book is great for an upper level analysis course, as well as for self study. Its emphasis is centered around the
multiresolution method, and it has both the basics in the subject, and
some exciting new results,-- those due
to the co-authors, as well as those of the analysts in the extended "Wash U-family" of researchers. It has a wealth of new material that
came after the 1992 classic of I. Daubechies ("Ten lectures on wavelets" SIAM ).The presentation in Hernandez-Weiss of, for example,
multiplicity theory and the dimension function is great for
the student who wishes to pick up the central ideas, or to
learn the details, step by step. The book contains both history and
motivation, and it points the reader towards a variety of exciting and timeless applications.

3 out of 5 stars Judith Petres Balogh.......2007-01-11

The book was not quite what I expected. It did not add much to my store of knowledge, and did not sharpen my perceptions. It is one of those "must" books, which is generally thought to be of importance, and nobody dares argue with the decree. I did not mind reading it, but I lacked the necessary enthusiasm for it.

2 out of 5 stars Ego overcomes environment.......2007-01-05

I could only read about 20 pages of this book, it was
not clear to me that Lawrence needed to leave England to
write this . The new Landscapes, villages, and people only
seem an excuse to get a never ending internal dialogue involving
his views and prejudices. I want a travel book to be like
good reporting, with the author only visible by the style of writing.
Joseph Mitchell is without peer in this method.

It might be more enjoyable if his views were not uniformly obvious or
          boring.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Beautiful.......2005-08-24

These essays are classics. Etruscan Places almost single-handedly revived "modern" interest in the Etruscans and was essential to the preservation and study of their tombs and paintings. Throughout, Lawrence is sensitive and insightful. An added patina to these works is the fact that they were written in the 1930s during the build-up toward WWII. There is an immediacy mixed with nostalgia here that is compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Over the Alps with a stolen German girlfriend..........2002-05-08

If i were to read only two travel books then this would be the second one, although both my wife and an English friend read it in German translation and reported that it was terrible. Maybe it doesn't translate well. Lawrence, as young man, describes a thread running through his life as he starts the journey by heading south toward Italy on foot from Bavaria with Frida, a way of travel that many Germans still understand very well. Descriptions of people are attractive, like the one-legged Italian who tried to seduce the cold, northern women at a dance. I liked best his description of his own Alpüberquerung, his description therein of the hurried English hiker, the way that Italins have ruined the alpine valleys with industrialization. And I felt loss at his growing distance from Frida. The book made me want to see the lemon and olive trees above Lago di Garda and the villages high above the lake, but we haven't done that in spite of our nearness to the region. Gardasee is completely overrun by German tourists now, not just by those wearing heavy hiking boots.

4 out of 5 stars Journal of Italian travel...........2001-11-18

D.H. LAWRENCE AND ITALY is composed of three stories: 'Twilight in Italy', 'Sea and Sardinia' and 'Etruscan Places'. The first two "books" seem to be based on journals he wrote while traveling with his German born lover then wife Frieda, whom he refers to as q-b for queen bee, through various villages on the mainland of Italy and the island of Sardinia. Lawrence does not record his experience of "famous" sights in these two books, in fact he says he is not interested in historical places, museums etc. but rather he wishes to see the people and the places in the out-of-the way areas of Italy. He and Frieda travel by bus, train, and boat--close to the ground.

Those who have read Lawrence's fiction will recognize his writing. He describes what he encounters with a visceral language--people, clothing, food, establishments. Some of the places are stunning and some so filthy you wonder how he could have stayed overnight. He visits lemon and olive groves and various high places along the coast and in the interior valleys. His writing is graphic--the reader will be as appalled and enchanted. He reflects Italy just before and after WWI.

In the third book, 'Etruscan Places', Lawrence describes his visits to various Etruscan sites, including the painted tombs of Tarquinia. His writing is less descriptive than that of the first two books. He is concerned with nothing less than the meaing of life, and the conflict between religion and truth (he died a few short years later at age 44 so his reflections seem almost prescient). He muses that societies are organized around death or life. He speaks of the use of fertility symbols such as fish and lambs for Christians and dolphins and eggs for Etruscans; the significance of the color vermillion -- male body painting by warrior classes where red paint connotes power contrasted with the the red skin coloring of the Etruscan tomb portraits which seems to have connoted the blood of life. He says the Etuscans loved life and the Romans who subdued them loved power.

Lawrence's book provides good background for those who would know more about Italy. Many of the places he describes have changed since the 1920s--some for the better. The people have changed--their clothing, homes, etc. are less unique and colorful, but they are better fed, warmer in winter, and cleaner. Hopefully their lives are better, but I don't think Lawrence would agree.

          Book Description

An authoritative edition of "the most charming book Lawrence ever wrote" (Anthony Burgess)

In January 1921, D. H. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda visited Sardinia, a Mediterranean island west of Italy. Although the trip lasted only nine days, Lawrence wrote an intriguing account of Sardinian life that not only evokes the place, people, and local customs but is also deeply revealing about the writer himself.

Remarkable for its metaphoric and symbolic descriptions, the book is transfused with the author's anger and joy. His prejudices and his political prophecies make Sea and Sardinia a unique and dynamic piece of travel writing. This Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics edition reproduces the Cambridge text, which restores censored passages and corrects corrupt textual readings to reveal--for the first time--the book Lawrence himself called "a marvel of veracity." Also featured are an illuminating Introduction by Lawrence scholar Mara Kalnins, a Chronology, Explanatory Notes, and an Italian Glossary.

"A wonderful book . . . no one who has really thrilled to Lawrence can ever give him up."--Philip Larkin

As described in the other reviews, and the accompanying comments within the book itself, this is DHL as non-fiction travel writer. Note that it was written after the completion of his major works, and what it says about his views, his relationships, and the immediate post-WWI period in portions of Italy. Particularly fascinating are the local/regional/national and continental attitudes. The more things change, the more they . . .

5 out of 5 stars DHL and the Queen Bee do Sardinia.......2005-05-31

In 1921, D.H. Lawrence joined the British literary tradition of writing a travelogue. He and wife Frieda, "the Queen Bee," were weary of Sicily where they were staying and selected Sardinia for its promise of unspoiled primitiveness and lack of "tourist-parasites." Though SEA AND SARDINIA follows many of the conventions of the travelogue genre of the time, playing to the market for a foreign experience, moments of wonder mixed with irony and nationalistic-centric sentiments, it is also a self-revealing journal in which Lawrence's passions, rages and perspectives get a frequent work-out.

As travelogues go, SEA AND SARDINIA may be found somewhat lacking in the description of landmarks. Lawrence focuses on encounters with the people, who presented a multi-layered lesson in the collision of the ancient with the 20th century and the recent war. In speaking to the audience back home, Lawrence often expresses himself in literary and historical allusion and his musings ring with a psychological resonance that is both intentional and unintentional. The result is an entertaining and informative experience that imparts much about post-war Europe and this particular traveler.

This is a fine critical edition. The annotations are discretely listed at the back of the book, with no disruptive footnotes blotting the page. There are also a good map, a glossary of Italian words and phrases and a brief bibliography following the text. A chronology of Lawrence's career precedes it, as does a critical introduction. Despite the quality of the introduction, I heartily recommend reading it AFTER you've enjoyed the text on your own terms, because it gives away some of the surprises (as critical introductions are wont to do).
